A heartfelt thanks to all group members; Adam Muhammad Pandor, Chong Hao
Foong, Danica Gan Jia-En and Farah Hanisah Binti Zainol for contributing ideas and
effort into making this project despite other engagements. This assignment would not
be successful without the participation of all group members who were hardworking
enough to come to campus early in the morning to shoot the video.
We would like to express our gratitude to Mr Shankar who gave us guidance and
valuable suggestions for completing this project. His lessons throughout the
semester has been enriching and beneficial and it was an honour to be part of his
class.
4. II. Introduction
In this assignment, students are to complete 3 components which are creating a
video clip by assimilating the concepts learned in class, writing a full report of the clip
and presenting the clip in class. In a group of 4, students are required to do a
literature finding on the concepts that were taught in class. Students need to figure
out how to implement 5 social psychology concepts in a video clip. This assignment
allows students to identify, reflect and analyse those concepts in real life.
Furthermore, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to evidence a well
researched argument through analysis and reflection.
5. III. Method

7. IV. DISCUSSSION
A. Concept and definition
We didn’t have that much face-to-face meeting, but we do a lot of discussion through
WhatsApp group. Farah and Danica have come out with different storylines and
concept of our sketch. After multiple discussions with the team our team had made a
choice on using Farah’s idea on the storyline.
The title of our video is called “The 3 Journalists”. The video explore on the 3
different races journalist and how they work together and interact with each other’s
behaviour.
The leading role is a new journalist to the magazine company. He is a
confident guy. He is new to the office and was introduced to his co-workers. He went
on a business trip with his co-workers and his true colours shows. He judge his co-
workers and they all didn’t get along that well.
In the interaction between the three journalists, many social psychology
concepts take place in the scenario. Scenario such as they interact with each other in
a plane. How they judge each other in races and behaviour. Sometimes, small little
arguments will form between them. It will also lead to some discomfort and
avoidance.
We have applied 5 main social psychology concepts into the sketch in how
the 3 journalists judge each other in thoughts and interaction. The 5 concepts applied
in the video are self-efficacy, racism, pluralistic ignorance, cognitive dissonance and
social loafing.
(B) Storyboard Design
Group discussion is held, after doing research we came up with the rough story line
referring back to the chapters we learned in class. The first few meeting we have
chosen and agreed on the 5 concepts we wanted to use. Later, following the script,
we choose the venue around the school that suits our video. Our video is about
journalist, so formal wear will do. We didn’t really plan and scripted what to act in the
video, we just improvise when the time has come, that way the whole video will feel
more natural.
8. STORYBOARD
Scene 1: Ben first comes into the office

Scene 3: They all went to a business trip.
Scene 4 : They all arrived at Tokyo Airport.
Scene 5: They all start working in Tokyo

Scene 7: The boss fired Ben.
C) Application and Analysis Scene
Scene one- Self-efficacy
Description:
Ben is a journalist who is very good at his job. He makes sure his stories has quality
and is always responsible, motivated, honest, punctual etc. He's confident when
performing his job.
Concept definition:
Self-efficacy refers to an individual's belief in his or her capacity to execute
behaviours necessary to produce specific performance.
Explanation:
Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one's own
motivation, behaviour, and social environment.
Application:
The basic premise of self-efficacy theory is that “people’s beliefs in their capabilities
to produce desired effects by their own actions” (Bandura, 1997, p. vii) are the most
important determinants of the behaviors people choose to engage in and how much
they persevere in their efforts in the face of obstacles and challenges. Self-efficacy
theory also maintains that these efficacy beliefs play a crucial role in psychological
adjustment, psychological problems, physical health, as well as professionally guided
and self-guided behavioral change strategies.
Scene two- Racism
10. Description:
In the plane, Ben did not want to sit next to Jerry because doesn't like his race.
Concept definition:
A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that
racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
Explanation:
A belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups
determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's
own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial
group is inferior to the others.
Application:
A lot of our attitudes are shaped when we're young. When our family members or
friends express racist opinions, it's common that we will take on those views
ourselves. The problem is that, unless we do something about it, they can stay with
us for a lifetime. We often put labels on people. He dresses like this so he must be
into this music. She goes to that school so she must be rich. We can also stereotype
people from different racial backgrounds as "lazy", "brainy", "aggro"… you get the
idea. The way to beat the stereotypes? Don't judge a whole group. Get to know
people from different racial backgrounds and find out how much you have in common.
Scene three- Pluralistic Ignorance
Description:
In the plane, Jerry behaved badly. He throws rubbish everywhere, he kicked the front
sit and fidgeted around too much. Ben wanted to say something to Jerry but
everyone else seemed fine with his annoying behaviour. So Ben decided not to say
anything to him. However Maria and some other people on the plane were annoyed
as well.
Concept definition:
11. Pluralistic ignorance refers to the social phenomenon in which individuals guess
wrongly about a group's beliefs and values.
Explanation:
In social psychology, pluralistic ignorance is a situation in which a majority of group
members privately reject a norm, but incorrectly assume that most others accept it,
and therefore go along with it. This is also described as "no one believes, but
everyone thinks that everyone believes.
Application:
Pluralistic ignorance can easily be conquered if just one person speaks up about
their values or norms. Yet, in these situations, people choose to sacrifice their norms
for the sake of agreeing with the group. Reasons include fear of being abandoned or
isolated by the group. Wanting to blend in the groups.
Scene Four- Cognitive Dissonance
Description:
During the trip, Maria smoked cigarette. Jerry told her that it is bad for her health and
Maria replied with 'Yeah, I know.' and continued smoking.
Concept definition:
The state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating
to behavioral decisions and attitude change.
Explanation:
The term cognitive dissonance is used to describe the feelings of discomfort that
result from holding two conflicting beliefs. When there is a discrepancy between
beliefs and behaviors, something must change in order to eliminate or reduce the
dissonance.
Application:
Dissonance is most powerful when it is about our self-image. Feelings of foolishness,
immorality and so on (including internal projections during decision-making) are
dissonance in action. If an action has been completed and cannot be undone, then
the after-the-fact dissonance compels us to change our beliefs. If beliefs are moved,
then the dissonance appears during decision-making, forcing us to take actions we
would not have taken before.
Scene Five – Social Loafing
12. Description:
When doing the research, Ben could not concentrate and gave less effort in finding
the story. He thinks that he works better when he's alone.
Concept definition:
Social loafing is the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal
when they work in a group than when they work alone.
Explanation:
Tendency of certain members of a group to get by with less effort than what they
would have put when working alone. Its two common manifestations are Free-rider
effect, where some members do not put in their share of work under the assumption
that others' efforts will cover their shortfall, and thus cause Sucker effect, where the
other (fully performing) members lower their efforts in response to the free-riders'
attitude.
Application:
Individuals in the group can also be affected by social loafing. While there is a
disparity of effort between members of a group, individuals start to gauge their own
effort based on what others are doing instead of maintaining a standard of excellence
towards achieving the goal. This lowers the level of satisfaction for the task in all
members of the group. For example, if a motivated team member repeatedly feels
others are relying on them to do most of the work, they might deliberately reduce
their workload or even stop collaborating with group members because they no
longer want to feel exploited by the less productive members.
