4. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Heart is one of the most important vital organ in our body. It is
encased and cushioned in its own serous membrane, the
pericardium, lies in the middle meditational compartment of the
thorax between pleura cavities. It receives and pumps blood in the
body. Cardiac disease continues to rank first among all disease
categories and is the leading cause death in the United states.
Cardiovascular disease comprise of a group of disease of the heart
and the vascular system. The major condition are ischemic heart
disease, hypertension, cerebra vascular disease continues to be a
important health problem in many developing countries

The forced or made the researcher to identify the existing
knowledge on lifestyle modification among cardiac patient.

preventive measures. Educating the entire population is not
feasible; instead educating a specific set of population in the
society who are more vulnerable to get the disease would be more
useful. Therefore he investigator felt a genuine interest and
concern towards a Knowledge questionnaires on “complications
and life style modification of cardiac disorders” to enhance the
knowledge, so That they will be the future guides for coming
generations.
7. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
To assess the knowledge regarding complications and lifestyle
modification among cardiac patients.
To find out association between knowledge of cardiac patients
with their selected demographic variables.
8. OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS
Knowledge: In this present study knowledge refers to the level of
understanding of Cardiac patients regarding complications and
lifestyle modification of cardiac disorders as measured by their
correct responses to knowledge items of questionnaire.
Complications: In this study complications of cardiac disorders are
Heart failure, Heart attack, Stroke, Aneurism etc……….
Lifestyle modification: Education about modifiable risk factors
changes the patient’s attitude and health practice in relation to diet,
physical exercise, smoking cessation, stress management and helps to
prevent heart disease and to preserve life.
9. ASSUMPTION
Cardiac patients may have some knowledge on complications and
lifestyle modification of cardiac disorders.
DELIMITIONS
The study findings are limited to only attending cardiac OPD in
Narayana Medical College& Hospital.
10. REVIEW OF LITERATURE
SECTION-I Studies related to knowledge regarding complications of
cardiac problems.
SECTION-II Studies related to lifestyle modification regarding cardiac
problems
.
11. Studies related to knowledge regarding complications of cardiac
problems.
A descriptive study was conducted on complications of cardiac
disease. It aims to assess the knowledge people regarding
complications of cardiac disease .A sample of Eighty five
respondents were participated in the study. Forty-three percent of
the respondents belonged to middle age group (25-50 years),
(60.00%) were housewives and family occupation was farming
(76.67%).Pre and post-exposure.Knowledge of respondents was
found out and overall, gain in knowledge regarding Complications
of cardiac diseases was found to be high. Majority of the
respondents were now ready to follow the Measures regarding
cardiac complications.
12. Studies related to lifestyle modification regarding cardiac
problems
A quasi experimental study was conducted to evaluate the
effectiveness of planned teaching programme about life style
modification of cardiac disorders among employees of cement
factory bagalkot, Karnataka. Subjects were 50 selected 15 through
simple random sampling technique. One group pre-test post-test
design was used. Data was collected by means of a structured
interview schedule which was divided into 2 sections (socio-
demographic data and knowledge regarding prevention of cardiac
disorders).
13. It was proved that there was increase in the knowledge level of
employees after implementing planned teaching programme. Out
of 50 subjects 29(48%) of subjects had satisfactory knowledge,
20(40%) subjects had an inadequate and only 01(2%) had adequate
knowledge regarding prevention of cardiac disorders before
teaching programme. However after teaching programme
(posttest) about 45(90%) subjects had an adequate knowledge and
5(10%) subjects had satisfactory knowledge regarding prevention
of cardiac disorders. Hence, the researcher concluded that PTP was
scientific, logical and cost effective strategy to improve knowledge
of public regarding prevention of cardiac disorders.
