Abstract
The Nano Brewery is a very small business that has been operating for two years. The two owners
have found that demand for their product has outstripped their ability to supply it. They are
considering expanding their company to meet this demand. We will analyze their financial
performance and evaluate broader environmental factors before providing a recommendation on
company expansion.
Nano Brewery

Introduction
The Nano Brewery operates in the microbrewery industry. A commonly cited definition of a
microbrewery is a brewer that produces less than 10,000–15,000 barrels per year. This relatively
small quantity fosters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Debt ratio
This is the proportion of the brewery's assets that are financed by debt.
Debt ratio= Total liabilities/ total assets
Total liabilities= $43236
Total assets= $70152
Debt ratio= $43236/$70152
Debt ratio= 0.616
This indicates that nearly 62% of the brewery's assets are currently financed by debt. This is
relatively high, but should not be viewed in isolation.
Debt to Equity Ratio
The debt–to–equity ratio demonstrates how the brewery is financed (outside creditors vs
shareholders.) Debt to Equity ratio= Total liabilities/ shareholder equity
Total liabilities= $43236
Shareholder equity= $26915
Debt to Equity ratio= $43236/$26915
Debt to Equity ratio is 1.62

This debt ratio is concerning and hints that the brewery may have difficulty paying its liabilities
including the sizable government loan.
Working Capital
Working Capital= current assets – current liabilities
As noted in the brewery balance sheet:
Total Current Assets: $18211
Total Current Liabilities: $4073
Working Capital is $14138
Environmental Analysis
Political factors
Political factors primarily include government regulation of alcohol and taxes. According to data
collected by The Beer Institute, the beer industry generated $5.3 billion in federal and state excise
taxes1. There has been recent interest in increasing the "sin tax" for products such as alcohol,
cigarettes to offset healthcare costs. With the recent

Finally, the large brewers were increasingly successful by creating another point of differentiation.
They attracted more consumers as the big brewers had the capacity to package beers in different
sizes and therefore also appeal to consumers who drank beer in small amounts or slowly as well as
packaged in different numbers to cater to the growing population of drinkers who consumed at
home.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendation was concluded by the team members :
Craft beer should not only be sold as premium beer among graduates and people with income of
more than 75000 USD but also to people with moderate income.
Brewing substitute products, for example, flavored–premium craft beer
Take over of companies that produced alcoholic beverages (spirits and champagne) and non
alcoholic beverages (such as soft drinks, juices and coffee)
Microbrewers should concentrate more on the following attributes of the beer: quality, freshness,
distinctiveness and variety of product offers, in order to gain more customers.
Craft beer companies should focus more on young professionals, since they are in the target group
of those identified to consume much craft beer. Furthermore, white Americans should be targeted as
well.
Craft beer companies should do much publicity to raise awareness of craft

All territories carry different regulations when it comes to the sale and distribution of alcohol. In the
state of Florida a $.48 sales tax must be paid per gallon of beer or malt beverage produced. Every
state has different zoning laws when dealing with alcohol. Some states have restrictions on selling
alcohol to close to school or churches. All states have different laws on the times of the day alcohol
is permitted to be sold. There are very strict laws in effect to discourage the sale of alcohol to
minors. It is mandatory that all sellers of alcoholic products ID customers prior to purchase. There
are also zoning laws in most states as to where the actual brewery is allowed to build.
Social
The age of technology has brought about many changes in today's society. With the advent of social
networking sites companies are able to get their product advertised and marketed in many more
ways than in the past. Sites like Facebook and Google+ have made it possible for companies to
market their products to millions of people for cheap advertising on these sights. Craft beer is
becoming very popular among younger adults around the world. Over the last decade, craft beers
have gained in popularity in the brewing industry, and their reputation hasn't stopped rising. They
are the hottest trend in beer today. (nyfb.org, 2010). Microbreweries have a strong presence in the

The Boston Beer Company : An Overview
Outline
The Boston Beer Company has had astonishing accomplishment in its move from a little scale
microbrewer to an expansive scale national bottling works. All of the organization 's prosperity is
because of the Samuel Adams Lager product offering, which has scarcely transformed from the
establishing of the organization in 1984, to the IPO in 1995, to the present day. Indeed, a great part
of the claim of Samuel Adams originates from its microbrew picture and the organizer, Jim Koch 's,
duty to the blending process and a premium brew. As of late, in any case, the organization has
executed another technique for development which has included presenting a light brew that will
have more standard request. While this has expanded benefits ... Show more content on

Energized by recompenses and acknowledgment from prestigious brew celebrations, Samuel Adams
Boston Lager was accessible on a significant part of the East Coast by the late 1980 's and broadly
by 1992. The organization opened up to the world on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995. The
Boston Beer Company 's procedure for development was one of separation. The organization made
a higher quality brew than the larger part of American lagers by utilizing more costly fixings and
less water, and it utilized its bundling and its ads to promote this dedication to quality. Indeed, in
view of its utilization of just grain, jumps, yeast, and water as its fixings, Samuel Adams won the
honor of being the primary American brew to be sold in Germany, a refinement that helped its
picture in America considerably more.
One business technique that the organization utilized as it developed was utilizing additional
preparing space as a part of other organization 's distilleries to blend their lager. Since the
organization was developing at a twofold digit rate, it didn 't have a considerable measure of
additional cash–flow to manufacture its own particular bottling works, so this was a decent
methodology for them amid their time of development. What 's more, since these distilleries were
appropriated all through the nation, this procedure permitted the Boston Beer Company to amplify
the freshness of the lager it sold. Truth be told, the now popular routine of

The Craft Beer Industry & How Brew Stooges Made Their Mark...
Company Overview During this presentation we will be going into depths concerning the craft beer
industry and how Brew Stooges made their mark on the industry in Huntsville, Alabama. Five years
ago, in early 2010, there was a single brewery in Huntsville, Alabama, one brewery, and the only of
its kind to open since the repeal of national prohibition in 1933. The city literally went for a span of
71 years without a single commercially brewed local beer.
As of June 2015, there are eight breweries in Huntsville, soon to be nine. This smallish southern
city, population 180,000, has undergone a total transformation as far as its craft brewing industry is
concerned. Like so many other American cities, beer has come into the vogue, but few if any can
claim to have experienced such as a rapid, radical, city–defining seismic shift. In just five years,
"old veteran" brewing presences have been established and a younger generation has come along to
reap the rewards of a clientele that continues to refine its taste. It's still very much a work in
progress, but to compare the "before" and "after" statistics is shocking. Thanks to a timely repeal of
some antiquated laws that held the brewing industry back–a home brewing ban, an ABV cap, a ban
on large–format bottles–craft beer is now free to thrive.
None of this would likely have happened without the first brewery, the now defunct Olde Towne
Brewing Company, which opened in 2004 to snap the 71–year drought. It's difficult to overstate

Essay on Micro Brewing a Moving Business
Though its had its shares of market ups and down micro–brewing is a stable to american beer
business.
Micro–brewing took off in the early 90's with brew pubs. People where looking for a more original
taste. Micro beers took form of a affordable luxury. Furthermore people wanted to disconnect with
the rapid consumerism from the 80's with wall–mart's and Mc Donald's showing up everywhere.
People where also starting to connect with their local towns and history trying to distinguish their
home town from another. Micro–breweries and brew pubs mostly local owned and operated.
Likewise, they often tend to use local ingredients for the brews. Furthermore many micro–brews are
marketed towards that local audience by often featuring blue ... Show more content on

These radical idea's and techniques lead to some micro–breweries becoming quite large in the mid
90's. Fueled by big spending and gains in the dot com bubble many saw the trend in beer and cashed
in. With a 50% growth from 1994–95, similarly by 1996 37% of beer drinkers had tried a micro–
brew (Robison, John). Many companies such as sam adam where having IPO's, where stocks are
publicly available to trade. Sam adams opened on the first day at 18 dollars for a share and by the
end of the first day it was up to 25 dollars. Red Hook also opened at 18 and was up to 27 and for a
couple years didn't trade below 24. Many jumped on fueled by a gold rush. What's more in 1994 64
new breweries opened, and by the 2nd quarter of 1995 59 had already opened (Gunn, Eileen).
By 1998 many companies have closed and the survivors where hit hard. Sam Adams brewing went
from trading 20 dollars in 95 to only trading 9 in 98 (Marcial, Gene). Several factors lead to this
burst. Big beer companies such as Anheuser Busch started to join in. With the distribution already
set up and the money to back brand to a national level. Big brews attempt at recreating micro–brews
where everywhere. In addition, many had an intentional lack of affiliation with the parent company.
With micro–brews normally at a higher cost, 4.99 vs 7.99 for a bottle, they also saw a huge increase
in profits. (Kesmodel,

Case Study : Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company
Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company, located in Kiln, MS, is the first microbrewery in the state and
specializes in manufacturing and distributing beers with distinct southern flavors. The brewing
company, established in 2003, has found success within its home state and within restaurants and
retailers situated in eighteen more states. These locations include the surrounding southern states
and states as far north as New York and Illinois according to its website, Lazymagnolia.com. The
following SWOT analysis will evaluate the internal strengths and weaknesses of the company as
well as the external opportunities and threats experienced within the market and business
environment.
Strengths
As previously stated, one of the greatest strengths of the Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company is the
reach of its success. The company already maintains a presence in several of the southeastern states
and continues to expand its distribution sites. Lazy Magnolia has also found a way to get around the
Mississippi state law that prohibits shipping alcohol to the public. They have done so by
collaborating with Half Time Beverage, an online retailer of craft beer ("Lazy Magnolia", 2015).
The creation of this relationship has allowed Lazy Magnolia to offer its products to consumers in
additional states in spite of constraints brought about by local laws. Another strong suit of Lazy
Magnolia is the company's promise to uphold its southern roots through the ingredients and flavors
it uses. The

Porter 's Five Forces Industry Competition
Porter's Five Forces
Industry Competition / Intensity of Rivalry:
As with every industry and business, there is competition. In the case of the craft beer industry, the
competition is medium and growing. From challenging the big macro–breweries, to battling against
new incoming brewery businesses, the craft beer industry is absolutely on the radar for competition.
Macro–breweries are still the largest competitors with craft breweries. The major player in the craft
beer industry, according to IBISWorld, is The Boston Beer Company. It holds a market share in the
overall beer industry of only 2.7%, and a revenue of $885.5 million in 2014. In comparison to the
major players in the overall beer industry, Anheuser–Busch InBev and MillerCoors ... Show more

If consumers prefer a specific beer and keep asking for it at bars, which only have a specific amount
of taps, will put that beer on more often to suit the increased demand. This makes the beer and the
brewery more popular, all the while intensifying the rivalry for bar space.
Suppliers:
The suppliers for craft beer include the source of the ingredients and the source of the materials used
in production. The craft beer industry relies on responsible, dependable, fresh supplies from
different industries to make production and distribution possible. The suppliers for production
include various industries for the basic ingredients; wheat, barley, soybean, corn, yeast, malt, nuts,
sugar and water. Other suppliers for distribution include the packaging industry, which consists of
aluminum, glass, cardboard, and containers. Smaller companies face a financial barrier here when
attempting to make flavorful beers that require high priced raw materials.
The lofty prices of high quality ingredients often act as a barrier to newcomers seeking to establish a
niche in the market. Lastly, the printing industry also plays a role as a supplier by printing labels.
Due to the uniqueness craft brewing methods, not all batches turn out the same, so the industry may
have to charge higher prices based on the cost of production. Since each craft beer style has a unique
measuring and brewing method, there is a large variety

The Brewing Co Of Michigan Breweries
Over the last 20 plus years, there has been a rapidly growing number of craft breweries in the
United States, including the State of Michigan. According to the official State of Michigan – Pure
Michigan website (http://www.michigan.org/breweries/), "The craft beer craze is sweeping
Michigan, making it fifth in the nation in the number of breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs."
The Michigan Beer Guide (2016), lists 259 different craft brewers in its current issue.
While there seem to be many success stories, there are also examples of Michigan breweries that
have gone out of business. According to Steven R. Reed (2013), "Michigan Brewing Co. founder ...
took the Webberville company into bankruptcy this week, seven months after one of 300–plus
creditors forced the auction of his equipment along with brands that had developed a statewide
following." As a personal observer of this story during its unfolding, to casual appearances, this was
a busy, successful micro–brewery. This micro–brewery was one of the first in Michigan to take
advantage of the growing popularity of the niche, yet suffered an untimely end. Craft breweries can,
obviously, fail like any other business enterprise.
One of the reputed benefits which have allowed the new craft beer industry to grow and thrive is the
better profit margins possible for making beer and ale on premises. Business scholars Kleban &
Nickerson (2011) have noted that "Since 2006, the craft beer industry has been able to

Evaluating Company 's Strengths And Weaknesses
Evaluating Company 's Strengths
A lot could be learned about a business by compiling all the relevant ratios taken from the business
financial statement. Ratios taken from financial statement according to Sobel, M "MBA in a

to meet its financial obligations. These obligations are efficiency and profitability. While some
ratios apply across the board of an industry, they also tend to differ by industry.

Usually, according to Sobel, M "MBA in a nutshell", one of the most common causes of new
business failure is undercapitalization. Fledgling organization like Nano Brewery with solid product
lines and good marketing efforts may nonetheless require a great deal of funding if it plans to
expand. Liquidity Ratio or Quick Ratio: The liquidity ratio or quick ratio according to Sobel, M
"MBA in a nutshell", is another measure of short–term solvency, in relative terms. This is
considered a conservative indicator, according to Sobel, M "MBA in a nutshell", given that the
assets represented in the numerator of the ratio do not include inventory, which is difficult to
liquidate quickly. The formula that expresses this is:
Liquidity ratio = Cash + accounts receivable + marketable securities divided by Current liabilities
Placing the values from the balance sheet into the formula
Liquidity ratio = $10,972.18 divided by $4,073 = 2.7
An organization's quick ratio is supposed to be greater than 1.1. From the result above, we can see
that we have 2.7. Debt–to–Equity Ratio: The debt–to–equity ratio according to Sobel, M "MBA in a
nutshell" is a measure of longterm solvency, in relative terms. The formula that expresses this
according to Sobel, M "MBA in a nutshell":
Debt–to–equity ratio = Total liabilities divided by Total shareholders' equity
Debt–to–equity ratio = $43,236 divided by $26,915 = 1.6 = 160% According to Sobel, M "MBA in

Listermann's Brewing Company Essay
Founded in 1991 by Dan and Sue Listermann, Listermann's Brewing Company is a family–run
microbrewery located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Known for its family–friendly environment and unique,
intimate culture, Listermann's houses 19 employees, half of which are full–time. Listermann's prides
itself on its humble beginnings, starting as a home brewery located in the Hamilton County Business

In its attempt to monopolize, Anheuser–Busch InBev has set a primary focus on forming stronger
relationships with distributors throughout the country, including in Cincinnati. Some of these
relationships have gone as far as Anheuser–Busch InBev buying–out distributors. This dynamic
worries Dan more than any other aspect, as a local microbrewery's success is based highly on its
relationship with distributors and their ability to effectively sell the product. This monopoly has
shown an interest in and ability to strangle Listermann's at the distribution stage, causing the
microbrewery drop offs in profit and reputation in the eyes of distributors. Some small breweries
have already caved in under the pressure, as part of this monopolization includes buying up any
microbreweries that are willing to sell. If this trend continues, it could be disastrous for
Listermann's, because Dan has used the same strategy of relying on consistent distributors ever
since he opened, and he has never had to repair that relationship or find a new strategy. In addition
to their attempt to buy–out distributors, Anheuser–Busch InBev has shown the money and resources
to buy–out employees from small beer producers like Listermann's. Dan pointed out that this trend
has already begun, as he has lost more employees

Being that Bismark Bock is the primary issue concerning profit for SDM it would be most important
to target and lower costs pertaining to that line. The biggest expense for the bock is shipping
($150.48), which is based on number of orders (18). If the company consolidated shipping by half
the orders instead of shipping each order separately, they could reduce orders to 9, which would
make the shipping cost $75.24. This minor change would be huge for SDM because it would change
their current loss to a gain of $35.74 per batch. The company could also explore automating some of
their processes to decrease labor hours, which would bring down overall overhead costs or finding
new suppliers for cheaper ingredients, which would decrease the direct materials cost.
5. Regardless of the allocation system used, the total net income for the year will not change
because the overall manufacturing overhead cost does not change. However, it is important to use a

Essay Us Beer Industry Overview
Market Structure
The beer industry is widely known for been an oligopoly. However, in our approach, we will
explore the possibility of analyzing microbreweries in particular from a monopolistic competition
market structure perspective. The beer market oligopoly is composed by three big players:
Anheuser–Busch which holds 48 % of the market share, Miller Brewing Co., with 18% and Coors
Brewing Co. with 11%. Please refer to the below graph and table for information regarding the
market share held by the remaining companies. (Market shares are shown based on shipments of

The high barriers to entry are partially due to the fact that the beer industry is a relatively mature
industry and that the market is dominated by very well established leaders. Other factors
constituting barriers to entry are: an increased tendency for vertical integration (i.e the three largest
brewers each own subsidiaries to perform non–brewing functions like grain elevators, milling, can

a result, the new entrants are mainly microbrewers which are focusing on a new type of demand.
Production Inputs Big or small, companies in the beer market are competing for the same resources
and are affected by the prices' fluctuations of their inputs. In the beer market, some of the key inputs
to consider in any economic analysis are grains, hops and yeast.
Strategy to succeed:
▪ Market Leadership ▪ Expanded market share (internationally) ▪ Price Increase ▪ Production
efficiencies ▪ Recent differentiation – Premium Price i.e. Anheuser–Busch – Michelob Ultra for

Industry niche markets – Smaller micro brews
▪ Highly fragmented but growing ▪ Only

Marketing Of The Craft Beer Market
This trend has continued into present day and has spurred the continued growth of the craft beer
market. From 2010 to 2015 the production volume of craft beer increased from 5% to 12.8% and
over 2 thousand new microbreweries entered the market (Brewers Association). Production is
expanding to keep up with consumer demand. More and more beer market shares is being taken
over by craft breweries. Consumers continue to put an emphasis on taste and quality over price
making craft beer an obvious choice for more consumers, making them seek alternatives to
traditional corporate beers. The United States Department of Agriculture ran a study focused on
determining the mindset of American consumers in relation to food and drink consumption. What ...

Individuals can even make a living off of DIY by selling their products on websites such as Etsy.
With the idea of craft beer originating from home brewers it seems only natural that DIY has
extended into brewing. Kits and equipment can readily be purchased by hobby brewers online and
there are an endless number of websites dedicated to tutorials and guides on brewing best practices
(Taylor, 2015). By offering brewing kits or sponsoring brewing education through a website or
brewing classes, 603 Brewery could benefit from this trend through increased brand awareness at
little cost to the company. Brewers are noticing an emerging consumer trend in demand for ciders,
sweet ales, hard root beers and other hard sodas (Taylor, 2015). As a result products and breweries
have been created to fill this increasing demand. For example Home Town Brewery the creator of
Not Your Father's Root Beer and Coney Island Brewing Company are breweries dedicated solely to
the production of hard root beers and other hard sodas. Large corporate breweries such as
Anheuser–Busch are getting into the sweet beer market with their product Best Damn Root Beer.
The same thing is happening with hard ciders thanks to Redd's Apple ale, Angry Orchard, and
Strong Bow. By introducing a cider or hard root beer into the current line up 603 could capitalize on
this current trend as well.

The New Face And The Beer Industry
Are microbreweries the new face to the beer industry? The real question is what is a microbrewery?
Microbreweries are small business that produces a limited amount of specialty beers for local sales.
Microbreweries are popping up all across the country, with new craft beers taking over taps.
Michigan alone has over a hundred different breweries. The economic system is on a rise, because
of the new style of beer coming to supermarkets and party stores. There are also new jobs being
created by the tourism of all the new tap houses opening up. Microbreweries is a new business that
is making changes to alcohol production, it is creating jobs, boosting the economy, and demolishing
the monopolization of the beer industry. There are many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There are many different styles that can be created by what ingredients are used, the amount of
hops, and the fermentation rate. Microbrews have become an upgraded business that started a few
centuries ago in Michigan. Beer creation has been around since the early centuries. The first law that
was created about beer was the "Purity Law". It was created in 1516 in Bavaria. "This law states that
beer can only be made with barley, hops, and water. Later the law was revised and introduced wheat
and yeast." (Craft Beer Timeline) Michigan played a major part and started creating brews in 1829.
It was sought out by a French man named Alexis de Tocqueville. The first type of beer brewed in
Michigan was a dark robust ale. But by the 1840s there were German influences that made
Michiganders create German style lagers. "Through the 1840s to the early 1880s the most common
brewery was the mom and pops operations serving just a small clientele'' (200 years). At this time,
the business was only on draft that was usually created by pub owners in the back of the saloons.
Soon after this bottled beer was introduced and larger companies began using multilevel breweries
to handle the demand of the consumers. In the article, 200 Years of Michigan Beer, "Prohibition hit
hard for Michigan. The state started a ban on alcohol sales and consumption three years before the
nationwide ban. Larger companies tuned to different means to keep up the businesses.

Competitive Market Of Nano Brewery
Competitive Market Although Nano–Brewery should not hold allusions of taking over the macro–
brewer scene anytime soon, they are doing well in comparison to other nano–brewers nationwide.
Currently, Nano–Brewery is services five accounts where they provide beer on tap, which by
industry standards is positive. John Holl, the editor and chief of All about Beer Magazine remarks
about nano–breweries, "heck, if they can get on tap in at least one place in town, that's success." The
reports of not being able to keep up with production is also a positive sign that the beer is being

Although craft brewers use a number of unique additives to their batches to get the right flavor, such
as fruits, nuts and honey, the major necessity is hops. Although hops can be sourced globally, the
market demand is steeply rising will inevitably drive up the cost. Larger macro–brewers will have
both the financial leverage and the economies of scale to get the best of what is around, leaving
microbrewers and nano–brewers to source elsewhere. There is also the consideration of price
strategy in the market. Craft beer is known for its higher cost of production and higher purchase
price to consumers, but as the trends in micro– and nano–breweries expands the question remains as
to if they will take on a similar pricing model to that of the macro–brewers in the United States.
Currently, the pricing trends amongst macro–brewers are almost solely based on a single
manufacturer, as noted by Robert Uihlein, Chairman of the Schlitz Brewery, 'a price increase is
needed, but it will take Anheuser–Busch to do it,' (Rojas, p.3). This trend has only slightly
manifested itself on the smaller market and realistically has just adhered to a standard model of
pricing thus far, with little fluctuation based on demand. As an example, there is a number of craft
breweries who have become infamous for releasing their most coveted brews on a limited basis, but

Analysis On Desert Valley 's Budget Adjustment
INTERNAL MEMO TO: Marcus Chelford, Ted Amero, and Fernando Lapan FROM: Li Chan, CPA
DATE: December 2, 2014 SUBJECT: Activity 2A – Budget Adjustment The purpose of this memo
is to describe the impact of the change in commodity prices on Desert Valley's budget and suggest
ways to mitigate this threat. We conducted some sensitivity analysis on Desert Valley's budget to
determine the expected impact of a 2% increase in the price of malt barley and wheat grain. This is
especially important given the fact that customers are not willing to increase prices to compensate
for the rising cost of these commodities. This puts pressure on Desert Valley to absorb these price
shocks and still meet its other financial objectives. As one would expect, a 2% increase on direct
materials will lead to an increase in variable costs and in turn, a decrease in profits and contribution
margin. The budget impact of this change equates to ($73,322) which represents a (1.06%) hit to
profits and a (0.86%) change in contribution margin. This shows that at this point, small percentage
changes in commodity prices have a relatively minor impact on the company's financial position.
However, if commodity prices continue to fluctuate further or if production volumes increase then
this may become a more prevalent issue. To mitigate the risk of future commodity price changes it is
recommended that Desert Valley adopt a hedging program by purchasing forward contracts. This
would allow the company to

Identification of Major Problems/Issues
1) PROBLEM: There is no separate and formal human resource department. Each department
within the company is independently responsible for hiring and training newcomers. This is a major
problem because it is very probable that unqualified new employees with no experience and the skill
necessary to do the job are being hired. Also, the company needs a separate department which
specializes in finding and training employees. SOLUTION: The company could outsource the
department by finding and teaming up with another corporation/company which will concentrate on
all the aspects of HR. Or, the company could simply create a new HR department by hiring a skilled

But as the company grows, they will have to let go of this structure and culture. Even Peter wonders
if this structure is suitable if the company will grow in the future. SOLUTION: By growing as a
corporation in the future, the company should and will hire more and more employees, and as the
personnel increases in number, the organizational structure and the culture will change.
5) PROBLEM: The company can't afford to pay its employees the same wages that Molson and
Labatt are paying their employees, so McAuslan is depending on the brewery workers who are
getting laid off by these large corporations. SOLUTION: The company shouldn't count on Molson
and Labatt to fire their workers and hire them at a low wage. It should, find other workers available
who have experience in the brewing industry and give them various incentives to join the company.
And as the company grows financially, then it can match the wages paid by the large companies.

Beer Wars Film Analysis
Introduction
A documentary film made in 2009, Beer wars features and describes the American beer industry
distinguishing between the large and small breweries. The large breweries feature some main
corporate companies like Coors Brewing Company, Anheuser–Busch, and Miller Brewing Company
whereas the small breweries include craft beer producers like Moonshot 69, Stone Brewing
Company, Dogfish Head Brewery, Yuengling, and others. The documentary shows how the beer
market is controlled through advertising and lobbying, which is harmful for the competition in the
market. There is a reason why the small companies are falling behind and the large corporates are
controlling the market, which in turn makes it essentially oligopoly economy.

The film depicts an insight of the beer industry and its current state in America. It shows some
unexplored or hidden facts and journey of the beer industry which is intended to interest the beer
lovers. Beer Wars film describes the daily battles in the beer industry between well–established
corporate beer brands and some of the upcoming innovative beer breweries. The independent and
the small breweries introduce new and innovative craft beer in this high profitable beer industry.
The documentary shows how the two small beer entrepreneurs, Rhonda and Sam try to establish
themselves in the beer industry and success in the high potential market. The film shows that the
beer industry is governed by some difficult and outdated laws along with an oligopoly of the large
brands. These large brands manipulate the beer industry by acquiring and buying off the smaller
brands which they find competitive among the market. The small brewers thus face difficulties and
barriers establishing themselves in the American beer industry. The big giants like the Coors
Brewing Company, Anheuser–Busch, and the Miller Brewing Company face challenge from the
independent craft beer producers when these new brands are put on shelves; so they seek ways to
prevent distribution and production of these small brands, which is harmful for the competition in

The Chemical Traces Of A Beer And The Artist Of Its...
Humans have been trying to get a buzz for centuries. Molecular archeologist Patrick McGovern
believes fermentation of yeast was discovered nearly 9,000 years ago after he uncovered chemical
traces of a fermented beverage found seeped into the porous clay of ancient pottery. It is safe to say
that the brewing industry is as old as civilization itself and over time humans have been able to be
creative with the process and produce variations of beer recipes. Drinking a beer can be defined as
an experience involving the presentation of its storage along with the beverage itself. Consumers
can appreciate both the artist of the individualized concoction of the beer and the artist of its
container or vessel. These two components of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wort is then brought to a boil, only recent in todays world, and hops are introduced where they
can break down and add different flavoring to the beer by releasing oils. The wort cools down and
yeast is then added for fermentation to begin. The yeast breaks down the sugars from the mash and
releases alcohol and carbon dioxide into the mixture. At this point in the brewing process, brewer
can decide to brew an ale or a lager, and choose the correct yeast according to that decision. As the
yeast finishes up its job, it begins to settle at the bottom of the fermentation vessel, leaving the final
beer product (Quinn).
Fig. 1
Since the beginning of fermentation history, potters and brewers have been linked by the beer
market. Beer is a product of water, malt, and yeast and fermentation. Fermentation is fundamental in
brewing because it gives beer its carbonation and alcohol content, so it is no wonder people began
creating vessels, or amphorae, with a functional use suited for this chemical reaction. In Figure 1,
amphorae that are shown generally had a specific shape with a tall narrow body and cylindrical
neck, enabling beer to ferment due to yeast breaking down sugar into alcohol in a cyclical
movement inside (Cartwright, 2013). Both artists felt the impact of globalization in pre–modern
period with two major inventions: the wheel and writing. Writing helped with communication

Georgia 's Craft Beer Industry
Problem Statement From the end of prohibition in 1933 to the turn of the new millennium, Georgia's
craft beer industry had seen more failure than success. Over a 67–year span, 9 of the 14
microbreweries to operate in the state failed. Was it the cost and availability of big beer and product
loyalty that caused this to happen?
But in 2013, Georgia's craft beer industry took a drastic turn. Microbreweries were opening at an
exponential rate. That year, Creative Loafing, an alternative news weekly, reported eight
microbreweries opening in the city of Atlanta, alone. Georgia had entered into a craft beer boom.
Today, there are 31 microbreweries operating in Georgia, and 24 more in planning, bringing the
total to 55 of these small–production breweries. What could have changed to cause an historically
failed industry to boom in such a short period of time?
Millennials.
According to U.S. Census data, Georgia's population of Millennials, defined as those born between
1980 and 2000, significantly increased between 2010 and 2014, the generation growing from 15.3%
of the population in 2010 to 26.61% of the population in 2014. (Pew Research, U.S. Census).
Earlier this year, Forbes reported that the group with the most purchasing power in the United States
had shifted from the Baby Boomers to the Millennials. It is estimated that Millennials in the U.S.
alone will spend around $200 billion annually by 2017.
The positive relationship between the population of Millennials in

How Millercoors Creates Up Porter 's Five Forces
The fourth force that makes up Porter's Five Forces is the bargaining power of buyers. For
MillerCoors specifically, the main buyers are distributors. The distributor controls the price by
setting it on profit margins. In addition, distributors are consolidating and increasing in power. For
example, in 1970 there were 5,000 distributors; today there are only 2,500 distributors. The
distributors are also eliminating new competition. Two examples of this are how MillerCoors puts
pressure on itself to carry its own brand and how there are more and more regulations on beer.
Because of these reasons, there is more power to current distributors than there was in the past.
The fifth and final force is the threat of new entry. One of the ... Show more content on

Some of the weaknesses that I could think of are that the company has one very large competitor
that represents 50 percent of the market share instead of several semi–large competitors, so gaining
the majority of the market share is a difficult task. The second weakness is that the beer brewing
industry has slow industry growth, while the wine industry is growing much more rapidly. In terms
of opportunities and threats, MillerCoors has several opportunities that it could capitalize on. The
opportunities that stand out to me are the foreign market explosive growth, financial markets,
innovation, and increasing the awareness of sustainability issues among consumers and employees.
If MillerCoors took advantage of these opportunities, it would find great success in several different
realms of the competitive market. As far as threats go, there are three main ones that face
MillerCoors. The first one is the competition that the company faces, the second one is the overall
falling beer consumption that is happening worldwide, and the third one is the growing popularity of
microbreweries and craft beer. These threats can also be seen as opportunities, though, such as
homing in on the creation of more microbreweries in its market to keep up with the growing

Case Study: Big Rock
During the past 30 years, Big Rock has provided beer drinkers across the country with a high–
quality product line consisting of reputable brands such as Traditional and Grasshopper Ale.
Moreover, due to the continuous change in craft beer drinkers, Big Rock has provided a diverse
variety of flavours to compete in the craft market segment primarily in Alberta. However, as the
industry becomes increasingly more competitive due to the exponential growth of microbreweries,
Big Rock must continue to develop its brand and spread awareness beyond Alberta and across the
country in order to address the stagnated growth that currently exists within the business.
Because Big Rock competes in both the premium and craft segment, it is suggested that Big Rock
introduces a new concept focusing on the premium segment. This recommendation is based on the
fact that craft beer drinkers are not loyal to a particular brand and continuously sample new flavours
as they are introduced into the market by the influx of craft microbreweries across the country.

Anheuser–Busch has been a publicly traded company since 1875 and today is still a staple of the
New York Stock Exchange. Anheuser–Bush has consistently outperformed the S&P 500, as can be
seen in Chart 4. Its return on equity in 2003 was 78.7% while the industry and the S&P 500 were
24.2 and 13.7 respectively.3 Anheuser–Busch outperforms the industry and the S&P 500 on many
other levels as well. Anheuser–Busch currently enjoys a net income growth rate of 10.5% over the
last three years while the industry lags at 7.5%. The S&P 500 experienced a negative growth rate for
the last three years. Anheuser–Busch also enjoys larger profit margins than the industry and the S&P
500. Financial information not covered in this portion of this paper is provided by Valueline in the
Appendix under table 3.
Anheuser–Busch obviously outperforms the industry and the S&P 500 in most facets of the market
place. Its sales, currently above $16 billion, are unmatched in the industry. It has continued to be
innovative in all the businesses they own, which is made apparent later in this paper. This has
allowed them to grow faster than competitors and stay ahead of the pack by large margins.
Anheuser–Busch is the benchmark around which this paper is built.

Microbrewery Research Paper
Beyond the microbrewery, a growing number of households are using fermentation techniques that
preserve fruits and vegetables all year long, without the use of electricity. Long before the advent of
refrigeration, ancient food preservation techniques, one being fermentation, were utilized to make
fruits and vegetables safe for consumption available long after the growing season had ended. It is
still used by many cultures today to produce crunchy pickles, tangy fruit chutneys and zesty
sauerkraut. Essentially, it is a metabolic process that converts the starches and sugars found
naturally in vegetables and fruits into food preserving alcohols and gases, which hinders the growth
of harmful bacteria while encouraging the reproduction of beneficial ... Show more content on

The length of time needed for any recipe to mature varies, as does the amount of time the food can
safely be stored. Small white flecks are not a concern, but a type of yeast that can safely scooped off
the surface. Fermented produce that has truly spoiled will be easily recognized by smell.
Europeans have been creating variations of sauerkraut for generations. The main ingredient of any
sauerkraut recipe is shredded cabbage; however, other ingredients can be added before and after the
fermentation process to create many unique side dishes. Traditional sauerkraut can be consumed in
as little as six days, but it will keep for six to eight months or more when stored in a cool, dark area.
Next to sauerkraut, pickled cucumbers are the most often thought of fermented, or pickled,
vegetable. Unlike the vinegar brine used in commercially produced pickles, lacto–fermented pickles
are crunchy with a sour, yet less salty taste. Many variety of recipes exist including Kosher dill
recipes, and bread and butter

1. Should Ms. Applebee consider the collaboration with the local micro brewery? According to my
opinion, Ms. Applebee should not consider the collaboration with the local microbrewery because
they publicly denounced that prevention programs are ineffective and unnecessary in the past and
they are not reliable and responsible for prevention programs. Even though the Safe Communities
Coalition has lack funds it may have a good reputation since it is working with the prevention

Terre Haute Brewing Company: Microbrewing Industry
Before analyzing the five forces of an industry, it is vital to first understand exactly what the
industry is. Terre Haute Brewing Company is in the microbrewing industry. The main types of
breweries are microbreweries, brewpubs, contract brewing companies, and regional craft breweries.
The distinguishing factor between these is the production volume. According to Hop Head,
microbreweries can produce no more than 15,000 barrels of beer in a given year. Larger breweries
have to follow stricter regulations and have higher tax rates than microbreweries. When analyzing
the industry it is important to distinguish between these types. When performing a five force
analysis to determine the amount of profit potential that exists in an industry,

Using ground pecans in place of grains in the brewing process certainly sets Lazy Magnolia
products apart from other available beers. Lazy Magnolia maintains a strong presence in the local
community. Viewing the event calendar on the brewery's website shows that it hosts events on its
premises and attends festivals across the region. Doing so not only helps with brand recognition, it
also fortifies existing relationships between consumers and distributors and lures potential clients.
The company's intent is not solely to get and maintain new customers. Recently, Lazy Magnolia
participated in a business networking event held by the University of Southern Mississippi with the
goal of attracting prospective employees as well as offering advice to future graduates. A visit to the
brewery site or even a quick search on Google Maps shows a developing problem for Lazy
Magnolia. The facility currently rests in an area that does not allow for much expansion. Though the
company did add 1700 square feet to the existing structure in 2013, another increase in size is not
possible at the current location (Lazy Magnolia, 2015). Lazy Magnolia owners would have to look
at off–site storage options or would need to consider investing in an entirely new location where
building growth could keep up with the increase in demand. The process of successfully crafting
microwbrews requires a specialized workforce. The term specialized in this

Energized by recompenses and acknowledgment from prestigious brew celebrations, Samuel Adams Boston Lager was accessible on a significant part of the East Coast by the late 1980 's and broadly by 1992. The organization opened up to the world on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995. The Boston Beer Company 's procedure for development was one of separation. The organization made a higher quality brew than the larger part of American lagers by utilizing more costly fixings and less water, and it utilized its bundling and its ads to promote this dedication to quality. Indeed, in view of its utilization of just grain, jumps, yeast, and water as its fixings, Samuel Adams won the honor of being the primary American brew to be sold in Germany, a refinement that helped its picture in America considerably more. One business technique that the organization utilized as it developed was utilizing additional preparing space as a part of other organization 's distilleries to blend their lager. Since the organization was developing at a twofold digit rate, it didn 't have a considerable measure of additional cash–flow to manufacture its own particular bottling works, so this was a decent methodology for them amid their time of development. • 7. The Craft Beer Industry & How Brew Stooges Made Their Mark... Company Overview During this presentation we will be going into depths concerning the craft beer industry and how Brew Stooges made their mark on the industry in Huntsville, Alabama. Five years ago, in early 2010, there was a single brewery in Huntsville, Alabama, one brewery, and the only of its kind to open since the repeal of national prohibition in 1933. The city literally went for a span of 71 years without a single commercially brewed local beer. As of June 2015, there are eight breweries in Huntsville, soon to be nine. This smallish southern city, population 180,000, has undergone a total transformation as far as its craft brewing industry is concerned. Like so many other American cities, beer has come into the vogue, but few if any can claim to have experienced such as a rapid, radical, city–defining seismic shift. In just five years, "old veteran" brewing presences have been established and a younger generation has come along to reap the rewards of a clientele that continues to refine its taste. It's still very much a work in progress, but to compare the "before" and "after" statistics is shocking. Thanks to a timely repeal of some antiquated laws that held the brewing industry back–a home brewing ban, an ABV cap, a ban on large–format bottles–craft beer is now free to thrive. None of this would likely have happened without the first brewery, the now defunct Olde Towne Brewing Company, which opened in 2004 to snap the 71–year drought. It's difficult to overstate ... According to the official State of Michigan – Pure Michigan website (http://www.michigan.org/breweries/), "The craft beer craze is sweeping Michigan, making it fifth in the nation in the number of breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs." The Michigan Beer Guide (2016), lists 259 different craft brewers in its current issue. While there seem to be many success stories, there are also examples of Michigan breweries that have gone out of business. According to Steven R. Reed (2013), "Michigan Brewing Co. founder ... took the Webberville company into bankruptcy this week, seven months after one of 300–plus creditors forced the auction of his equipment along with brands that had developed a statewide following." As a personal observer of this story during its unfolding, to casual appearances, this was a busy, successful micro–brewery. This micro–brewery was one of the first in Michigan to take advantage of the growing popularity of the niche, yet suffered an untimely end. Craft breweries can, obviously, fail like any other business enterprise. One of the reputed benefits which have allowed the new craft beer industry to grow and thrive is the better profit margins possible for making beer and ale on premises. In its attempt to monopolize, Anheuser–Busch InBev has set a primary focus on forming stronger relationships with distributors throughout the country, including in Cincinnati. Some of these relationships have gone as far as Anheuser–Busch InBev buying–out distributors. This dynamic worries Dan more than any other aspect, as a local microbrewery's success is based highly on its relationship with distributors and their ability to effectively sell the product. This monopoly has shown an interest in and ability to strangle Listermann's at the distribution stage, causing the microbrewery drop offs in profit and reputation in the eyes of distributors. Later the law was revised and introduced wheat and yeast." (Craft Beer Timeline) Michigan played a major part and started creating brews in 1829. • 28. Analysis On Desert Valley 's Budget Adjustment INTERNAL MEMO TO: Marcus Chelford, Ted Amero, and Fernando Lapan FROM: Li Chan, CPA DATE: December 2, 2014 SUBJECT: Activity 2A – Budget Adjustment The purpose of this memo is to describe the impact of the change in commodity prices on Desert Valley's budget and suggest ways to mitigate this threat. We conducted some sensitivity analysis on Desert Valley's budget to determine the expected impact of a 2% increase in the price of malt barley and wheat grain. This is especially important given the fact that customers are not willing to increase prices to compensate for the rising cost of these commodities. This puts pressure on Desert Valley to absorb these price shocks and still meet its other financial objectives. As one would expect, a 2% increase on direct materials will lead to an increase in variable costs and in turn, a decrease in profits and contribution margin. The budget impact of this change equates to ($73,322) which represents a (1.06%) hit to profits and a (0.86%) change in contribution margin. This shows that at this point, small percentage changes in commodity prices have a relatively minor impact on the company's financial position. However, if commodity prices continue to fluctuate further or if production volumes increase then this may become a more prevalent issue. To mitigate the risk of future commodity price changes it is recommended that Desert Valley adopt a hedging program by purchasing forward contracts. This would allow the company to ... • 33. The Chemical Traces Of A Beer And The Artist Of Its... Humans have been trying to get a buzz for centuries. Molecular archeologist Patrick McGovern believes fermentation of yeast was discovered nearly 9,000 years ago after he uncovered chemical traces of a fermented beverage found seeped into the porous clay of ancient pottery. It is safe to say that the brewing industry is as old as civilization itself and over time humans have been able to be creative with the process and produce variations of beer recipes. Drinking a beer can be defined as an experience involving the presentation of its storage along with the beverage itself. Consumers can appreciate both the artist of the individualized concoction of the beer and the artist of its container or vessel. These two components of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The wort is then brought to a boil, only recent in todays world, and hops are introduced where they can break down and add different flavoring to the beer by releasing oils. The wort cools down and yeast is then added for fermentation to begin. The yeast breaks down the sugars from the mash and releases alcohol and carbon dioxide into the mixture. At this point in the brewing process, brewer can decide to brew an ale or a lager, and choose the correct yeast according to that decision. As the yeast finishes up its job, it begins to settle at the bottom of the fermentation vessel, leaving the final beer product (Quinn). Fig. 1 Since the beginning of fermentation history, potters and brewers have been linked by the beer market. Beer is a product of water, malt, and yeast and fermentation. Fermentation is fundamental in brewing because it gives beer its carbonation and alcohol content, so it is no wonder people began creating vessels, or amphorae, with a functional use suited for this chemical reaction. In Figure 1, amphorae that are shown generally had a specific shape with a tall narrow body and cylindrical neck, enabling beer to ferment due to yeast breaking down sugar into alcohol in a cyclical movement inside (Cartwright, 2013). • 34. Georgia 's Craft Beer Industry Problem Statement From the end of prohibition in 1933 to the turn of the new millennium, Georgia's craft beer industry had seen more failure than success. Over a 67–year span, 9 of the 14 microbreweries to operate in the state failed. Was it the cost and availability of big beer and product loyalty that caused this to happen? But in 2013, Georgia's craft beer industry took a drastic turn. Microbreweries were opening at an exponential rate. That year, Creative Loafing, an alternative news weekly, reported eight microbreweries opening in the city of Atlanta, alone. Georgia had entered into a craft beer boom. Today, there are 31 microbreweries operating in Georgia, and 24 more in planning, bringing the total to 55 of these small–production breweries. What could have changed to cause an historically failed industry to boom in such a short period of time? Millennials. According to U.S. Census data, Georgia's population of Millennials, defined as those born between 1980 and 2000, significantly increased between 2010 and 2014, the generation growing from 15.3% of the population in 2010 to 26.61% of the population in 2014. In addition, distributors are consolidating and increasing in power. For example, in 1970 there were 5,000 distributors; today there are only 2,500 distributors. The distributors are also eliminating new competition. Two examples of this are how MillerCoors puts pressure on itself to carry its own brand and how there are more and more regulations on beer. Some of the weaknesses that I could think of are that the company has one very large competitor that represents 50 percent of the market share instead of several semi–large competitors, so gaining the majority of the market share is a difficult task. The opportunities that stand out to me are the foreign market explosive growth, financial markets, innovation, and increasing the awareness of sustainability issues among consumers and employees. If MillerCoors took advantage of these opportunities, it would find great success in several different realms of the competitive market. As far as threats go, there are three main ones that face MillerCoors. The first one is the competition that the company faces, the second one is the overall falling beer consumption that is happening worldwide, and the third one is the growing popularity of microbreweries and craft beer. Moreover, due to the continuous change in craft beer drinkers, Big Rock has provided a diverse variety of flavours to compete in the craft market segment primarily in Alberta. However, as the industry becomes increasingly more competitive due to the exponential growth of microbreweries, Big Rock must continue to develop its brand and spread awareness beyond Alberta and across the country in order to address the stagnated growth that currently exists within the business. Because Big Rock competes in both the premium and craft segment, it is suggested that Big Rock introduces a new concept focusing on the premium segment. This recommendation is based on the fact that craft beer drinkers are not loyal to a particular brand and continuously sample new flavours as they are introduced into the market by the influx of craft microbreweries across the country.
