Families On The Home Front During Wwii
Families on the Home Front during WWII by Ewa Bieciuk
HIST 2200– U.S. History Since 1877
Summer 2015
Prof. Hardin September 1st, 1939 is a day that changed the course of history. Lives were lost,
families ripped apart, towns destroyed, and jobs were created. World War II had just begun with the
majority of the main countries in our world participating in the war that would ultimately kill
millions of soldiers and civilians. Two years later, on December 8th, 1941 after the Japanese
surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war fully. During this time, the
U.S. enlisted the help of the entire nation; soldiers, factory workers, nurses, and doctors were
required both overseas and on the home front. While many men were sent to fight over–seas or
prepare at combat training on bases in the U.S., factories and other business were left with a
shortage of workers. World War II encouraged, or more accurately, forced, women and wives to
leave their homes to begin working. A familiar image that many Americans are familiar with is of
the women flexing announcing "We Can Do It!", which is greatly recognized as a symbol of the
female presence in the workforce. Young adults dropped out of school to help out in numerous
ways. The amount of children working also increased greatly. Desperate measures to save money
and help in the wartime effort lead to many drastic changes in roles and lifestyles of American
families on the home front.

On The Home Front: Military Communication
On The Home Front The Civil War was very hard on families, causing most of them to sacrifice
people in their families, most families had all of the young men in their family taken out of their
jobs on farms and factories. This left the women and children to tend to the large farms and hold the
weight of the house. Also, since the demand for supplies for the war increased it created more jobs
for the people to fill which forced more people into labor. It also effected families personally, having
their sons/brothers in war was constantly nerve racking and scary, every day they were constantly
dreading receiving any news or letters, fearing the life of their family members. On the plus side
there was definitely enough jobs, as mentioned earlier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hoop skirt was also very popular to help support their dresses, as dresses were the only accepted
way of dressing. Also, because so many people's family members and friends where dying/dead
they used mourning dresses to express it. They used mourning dresses to express love and feelings.
Men often wore felt hats and held up their pants with suspenders or leather belts depending on
location. Men also wore loose fitting vests and white shirts which signaled that you weren't a
laborer. Obviously clothing and fashion depended on your location at the time, but those are the
general fashions in the Civil War. During the Civil War people became very conscious about their
resources and money. Also the government became more conscious on saving their money and
resources. Especially in the south since they had so little resources they had to reuse a lot of their
preexisting materials. Overall the Civil War had a huge impact on people even if they weren't on the

Losing Vietnam On The Home Front

Losing Vietnam on the Home–front
Forty six years have passed since the United States officially stopped their involvement in Vietnam.
Not since the Civil war had the country been so torn. Every American family was impacted, losing
husbands, sons, and daughters. Over fifty thousand Americans were killed and many more still
suffer deep physical and emotional scars . Veterans took their own lives, were treated as social
outcasts, or ended up on the streets with the homeless. The Vietnam conflict was a war that many
did not understand and that left a nation questioning the government they had always trusted.

involvement in the Vietnam War. Some advocates within this movement advocated a unilateral
withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Vietnam.
In 1965 the movement began to gain national prominence. Aggressive actions by police and
protesters turned the anti–war demonstrations in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National
Convention into a riot. News reports of American military abuses, such as the 1968 My Lai
Massacre, brought new attention and support to the anti–war movement bringing it to its height. The
movement continued to prosper over the span of the conflict.
The Mỹ Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass killing of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians
in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. The
massacre, which was later called "the most shocking episode of the Vietnam War", took place in two
hamlets of Sơn Mỹ village in Quảng Ngãi Province. These hamlets were marked on the U.S. Army
topographic maps as My Lai and My Khe. The U.S. military codeword for the alleged Viet Cong
stronghold in that area was Pinkville, and the carnage was initially referred to as the Pinkville
Massacre. Later, when the U.S. Army started its investigation, the media changed it to the Massacre
at Songmy. Currently, the event is referred to as the My Lai Massacre in the United States and called
the Son My Massacre in Vietnam.
High–profile opposition to the Vietnam war turned to street protests in an effort to turn U.S.

The Importance Of The Outbreak: Supporting The Home Front
The Outbreak: At the outbreak of the war, most women still found themselves in their homes doing
nothing new other than the usual house chores while others such as the suffragettes were
campaigning for change. This however all changed when the men headed abroad to fight, women
found themselves taking over the men's roles in factories, shops, and offices across the country.
Supporting the home front: Between 1914 and 1918, more than a million women joined the
workforce to fill the gap left by the men at war. Finding themselves working diversely from nurses
and cleaners to police patrols and explosives manufacturing for the war. Yet they still earned only
half as much as men working the same jobs men did and were still constricted with what they

World War I and the Home Front Essay
World War I began in 1914 but America remained neutral until its entrance into the war in 1917. The
U–boats sinking of the British liner Lusitania in 1915, the sinking of five American ships in 1917,
and the "Zimmerman telegram" sent from Germany to Mexico led up to America's declaration of
war. America's involvement in World War I not only impacted the war front but also the home front.
When America entered World War I in 1917 the U.S. Government enforced many measures on its

Americans became afraid of and disdainful towards anything German. Affairs associated with
Germans or Germany ceased such as German bands, German courses in schools, and renaming

that we are in the war there are only two sides, and the time has come when every citizen must

Americans cautious and discreet in their speech and actions.
Government censorship continued with the passing of the Espionage Act in 1917 and the Sedition

Summary: The Influence Of Propaganda On The Home Front
Propaganda refers to when biased information is spread to influence a certain audience to promote
another political opinion. Propaganda greatly influenced the home front by convincing civilians to
get involved by downplaying the WW1. They came up with many ways to convince homefront to
defend their country and claimed that it would be a very "swell" place to go.
They designed posters to convince the public to join the army. The posters usually had many
different phrases. Some of the most famous ones were such as "Soldiers of the Soil, Boys to the
Front." This phrase was used to persuade young boys to take over the farm work previously left by
the men who had gone to the war. They were also made to attract young boys to join the Canadian
military. Another very popular phrase used was "Buy Your Victory Bonds" on an anonymous poster
with a Canadian soldier called "Uncle Sam" pointing at the audience. It was designed to ask the
public to buy war bonds, to support the war effort. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They went through many hardships because of all the diseases such as, "trench foot." This was
caused by the very wet and muddy grounds. "Shellshock" which was a stress disorder caused by the
fear left in a soldier from the warfare. It was a physical damage to the brain. There were also other
diseases such as the "trench fever," "Malaria," "influenza," "typhoid." Another way that they had
used propaganda was when they used the method of "bandwagoning" on the home front, which
persuaded others to join as well. When the army was running out of men to defend the country, they
were forced to use conscription on others. This was when they were forced to fight for their

Home Front Mobilization
Historians credit Britain with a highly successful record of mobilising the home front for the war
effort, in terms of mobilising the greatest proportion of potential workers, maximising output,
assigning the right skills to the right task, and maintaining the morale and spirit of the people. Much
of this success was due to the systematic planned mobilisation of women, as workers, soldiers and
housewives, enforced after December 1941 by conscription. The women supported the war effort,
and made the rationing of consumer goods a success. In some ways, the government over–
responded, evacuating too many children in the first days of the war, closing cinemas as frivolous
then reopening them when the need for cheap entertainment was clear, sacrificing

Creative Writing: All Quiet On The Home Front
It is three years into the war, WWII, and Oscar is turning seven tomorrow. Although the sun is
creeping under the horizon, Oscar is still as energetic as a rabbit!Because his parents were getting
rations along with Oscars sister Elle, Oscar is staying home alone. He was doing well, at home
alone, until the radio sounded, " German soldiers are coming to the house!" those were the voices of
his panicked parents, "Go to your room and shut off the radio!" Consequently , Oscar froze; the boy
had never done this alone before. The house was very compact, and it is full of tiny hiding places.
The place Oscar hides is upstairs in his room. He entered his closet and stuffed himself into the
miniscule hole in the shelf. Just as Oscar shut himself in, he heard the German soldiers outside of
the house. The soldiers tried to get into the house but could not get in with ease, because the door is

the room, metal clanging, boots stomping, yet they had entered very carefully. Another three
minutes passed, and Oscar heard someone yell. At once, they all rushed up the stairs. The boy could
not tell how many were there , but there were many. The soldiers first checked the sisters room;
nothing was there. Next, the master bedroom; nothing was there. Then, suddenly his radio

Personal Narrative: All Quiet On The Home Front
I hope you all are doing well. I wish I could go back home to be with you all because I am terribly
missing the comfort of home. I want to go to my loving family and feel safe and protected again. By
the time you read this, I could be dead like the majority or still battling in the war. The war is
barbaric. Aside from that, sometimes I would do stuff that makes me feel normal on my free time,
such as reading a book or talking to other soldiers.
I did not want to make new friends, considering the position all of us are in. We were put into this
position to get one main job done. However, the inevitable happened, and I became close to some of
my fellow soldiers. We talked about a lot of topics, including our interests and our past. It almost
seemed normal, as if we were not in the middle of a war, where one of us could die at any instance.
Talking to my friends about anything but war takes me back to a time when I was a child, sitting

The trenches would smell like blood, gunpowder, and everything that was rotting in there. After the
gunshots have stopped, and the air is filled with silence, the remaining soldiers drop onto the dirt
ground, realizing they have survived another day. I always get this uneasy feeling, knowing that
although I have survived another day, there is much worse to come. Even though I have survived,
every shred of my sanity is gone. Before I go into another restless night, I think about my friends
who have died for this war, and finally get the chance to mourn about them.
It's not easy knowing that your fellow soldiers have died and you're still alive. Sometimes I wonder
if it is better to be dead, never having to experience the horrific images of bloodied lifeless bodies
and the sound of helpless screams again.
I hope to see you all again someday. The thought of being with my family again makes me want to

The Oklahoma Home Front
On April 6, 1917, the United States entered the Great War with the vast majority of the American
populace supporting the ingress. Although there were some dissenting opinions on America
intervening in the war. This dissent was typically seen from marginal groups of Irish and German
immigrants who either had harsh feelings toward Great Britain or felt uneasy about fighting against
family members in Germany. These demographics would be swayed by society to reform their
views, or in some extreme cases be forced to. Furthermore, several groups who were not expected to
support the war were given an opportunity to show their patriotism. Surprisingly, this could be seen
by groups of African and Native Americans who were wanting to gain credibility ... Show more

These sentiments could be seen across the country, and in worse cases citizens acted upon these
notions. As Farwell recalled, "Those bearing German names were often molested, and in places
lynched." Because of this those bearing German names changed them and several towns did as well.
These views were commonly rooted in the belief that the German immigrants were spies, which was
a nearly identical assumption the Young Turks made against their Armenian demographic.
Nevertheless, these beliefs would dominate the American public throughout the war, and one cannot
help but to theorize that the excessive propaganda and government intervention caused some of
these biases to formulate in a small town like Tulsa. As it would be difficult not to want to defend
one's country if the enemy being presented is of a barbaric gorilla rapaciously clutching onto a
woman that symbolizes the Statue of Liberty. Even those who were illiterate in Tulsa would be able
to discern from this poster that the enemy they were facing was not to be shown mercy or sympathy.
Which in turn potentially caused perceptions of German Americans to be hyperbolized and soured.
No person of German heritage was thought. Even the renowned brewmaster Adolphus

Home Front Rationing
During the war, people received ration books. The books included the person's name, address, city
and state. People were also given ration coins that allowed cashiers to give change for food
purchased with ration stamps. People were given these because items during the war were scarce.
The first food item's prices that were "frozen" on the market by the United States Office of Price
Administration (OPA) were sugar and coffee.
The reason things were rationed was due to little production. Was items were the priority of being
produced over household items to help win the war. This meant that everything needed to be
rationed for everyone to get their equal share. Sugar, meat, tires, silk, gasoline, shoes, nylon, and
more were all rationed to American people. Chicken wire, used for fencing in animals was also
being rationed. Pretty much anything you could think of had to be rationed, because the most
important focus at the time was the war. The title of "Few Nylons" meant that women had rations on
stockings. Also their clothes were cut down to save material. Their hem and belt width was cut
down to two inches. The cuffs on the sleeves of their clothes were no longer allowed. The
availability of nylon stockings was scarce. The restrictions for women's apparel saved yardage of
material for other clothes used in war. The War Production Board (WPB) was in charge of ensuring
that armed forces had all their supplies to win the war. Since they were in a state of

The American Home Front During World War 1
(Just as a side note, I had pictures of the posters in the original paper but couldn 't transfer them to
here. The first link in the bibliography has tons of WW1 propaganda posters you can use.) World
War I changed America greatly. It had an obvious effect on the way we handle business on the home
front. Propaganda, rationing, and political views all played a part on American citizens in World
War I. "Propaganda was a huge tool used to sway citizens toward a particular political view. "The
U.S.A. entered World War One in April 1917, but lost no time in producing many more propaganda
posters than any other single nation. These encompassed recruitment to the various armed services,

People also planted liberty gardens, so they wouldn 't need to buy everything from the store.
Political views played a great part in shaping America during World War I. Previously, every war
was because of a great and direct threat to American existence. In the case of World War I, we went
to war to preserve democracy. Germany certainly wouldn 't have wiped us off the map. America also
tried to maintain neutrality, electing Woodrow Wilson on the slogan "He kept us out of war."
(fff.org) The American people were easily manipulated into anti–German and pro–war beliefs. More
"American–like" names were given to certain things. Hamburgers became Salisbury steaks because
Hamburg was located in Germany. Sauerkraut became liberty cabbage, because sauerkraut was a
German name. Beethoven 's music was banned, and burning of German books was common. "These
techniques were highly successful. The government found that overt and subtle forms of propaganda
fanned the requisite passions of pride and prejudice to fight a total war in Europe. Indeed,
aggressive propaganda helped to skirt constitutional and statutory limitations on war policies —
policies that would never pass rational scrutiny in peacetime. Empirically, it proved that government
propaganda aimed at arousing strong feelings of American nationalism could facilitate the exercise
of extralegal and

On October 7th, 1916, Hitler received a server would to the leg resulting from a shell blast, while
stationed near Bapaume. He was then sent to convalesce at Beelitz, where he healed up. When he
had recovered from the injury he went on a trip to nearby Berlin, for some sight–seeing. The capital
was suffering from food shortages, and that combined with long working hours for the munition
workers caused work strikes to occur. This is seen as the real reason behind the fall of Germany, a
lack of food and thus lack of mutations. After witnessing this all Hitler labeled them cowards and
traitors, showing no empathy for their plight. The lack of morale for the war was sickening for him
and depressed him greatly. Soon. he returned to his regiment ... Show more content on

than the biggest cannon of the enemy.". Hitler felt the full weight of the British offensive at Arras

Military Cross 3rd Class with Swords. With high morale, the German High Command had its last
throw of the dice in the final offensive. But the combination of American economic might with
French and British experience would be too much for the Germans. Even if they could break

Why Do Soldiers Live On The Home Front?
World War I, also called First World War or the Great War, was the first global conflict that lasted
from 1914 to 1918. Some of the people who suffered the most on WW1 were the soldiers and
people who lived in the Home Front. Soldiers didn't live a normal life, they lived in horrible
conditions. It was dirty, that's why there were many animals like rats, frogs, insects etc., that eat the
soldier's food and contaminated it, by eating contaminated food soldiers got sick that's was one of
the main reasons why soldiers died. Soldiers live a life where they are constantly seeing people and
friends dying, they didn't know when they were going to see their family again, probably they
weren't going to see them again. "The whole street seemed to explode. There was smoke and flames
all over, but the worst of it was the screams of the dying and the wounded and mothers looking
frantically for their kids. "Eye–witness to a Zeppelin attack. For soldiers not to get bored in their
free time they play card games like war (kind or ironic) solitary, and gin rummy. People on the

The home front during World War 1 covers domestic, economic, social and political histories of the
countries involved in the War. However, the economy was of particular importance because it
effected civilians as well as the military. This war was a war of totality in which total war demanded
total mobilization of all the nations resources in order to achieve a common goal. The workforce had
to be directed to the frontlines. However, behind the lines labor had to be directed away from less
necessary affluences during the total war. The ammunitions industries had to be built up to provide

Manpower had to be channeled into the front lines (all the powers except the United States and
Britain had large trained reserves designed for just that). Behind the lines labor power had to be
redirected away from less necessary activities that were luxuries during a total war. In particular,
vast munitions industries had to be built up to provide shells, guns, warships, uniforms, airplanes,
and a hundred other weapons, both old and new. Agriculture had to be mobilized as well, to provide
food for both civilians and for soldiers (many of whom had been farmers and needed to be replaced
by old men, boys and women) and for horses to move supplies. Transportation in general was a
challenge, especially when Britain and Germany each tried to intercept merchant ships headed for
the enemy. Finance was a special challenge. Germany financed the Central Powers. Britain financed
the Allies until 1916, when it ran out of money and had to borrow from the United States. The US
took over the financing of the Allies in 1917 with loans that it insisted be repaid after the war. The
victorious Allies looked to defeated Germany in 1919 to pay "reparations" that would cover some of

WWII Home Front: The Key to Victory
The path to Allied victory in World War II wasn't solely due to the soldiers fighting on the frontline,
but also a result of the people fighting at the home front as well. When Pearl Harbor was attacked on
December 7 of 1941, the United States were forced to enter the war and panic gripped the country
as a whole and made many fear of plausible attacks to the United States. However, instead of just
cowering in fear, the majority of Americans converted this fear into their acceptance that the only
way to win this war, was to fight back through their very own, home front. The home front was the
war efforts back in the United States, in which many Americans made imperative sacrifices that
turned the tide of victory in favor of the United States and Allies. This is evident in the fact that
Americans resorted to the rationing of supplies at home, employing women in the defense plants,
and buying war bonds to pay for and support the war effort. Thus, the home front was crucial in the

Surveillance and Spying on the Home Front Since 9/11
Every since 9/11, the surveillance in the United States has become stricter and of more importance.
The security is more top–notch than it has ever been because of the fear a future terrorist attack
striking once again. The United States government is doing this for safety issues and the protection
of Americans, but many are against the whole idea of having the government spy on you and others
actually agree with it.
John Yoo who was the deputy assistant general in the Justice Department's office of Legal Councel
and he also took part in the legality of the NSA domestic surveillance program. Yoo supports
government surveillance.
One of Yoo's arguments is since that the enemy is a group of people and not a nation, these terrorists
can possibly disguise themselves as American citizens. The NSA has to identify where certain
communications can reveal certain threats. Al Qaeda is disguising messages and the NSA is trying
their best to interpret them and found out the meanings. Yoo says that Al Qaeda uses the Internet,
uses cell phones, and talks on the phone like average innocent Americans. So NSA needs to be able
to interpret all types of communication. Yoo says that during Wartime enemies are trying to attack
the U.S. and since the government needs to take action they have the right constitutional power to
try to intercept the communications to try to see if let's say this person making the call is a potential
enemy. When the interviewer brings up the fourth amendment and

performing the traditional roles of women ex–cooking and cleaning. Additionally, they lost their
economic independence and once again had to rely on men for money. Fortunately, some brave
women resisted social norms and continued to work. Through their, efforts a national women's
rights movement was started that would completely change the economic and social status over the
Air Battle of Britain
The battle of Britain was the first major battle of world war 2. The purpose of this attack was to get
Britain to bomb Britain till they surrender so they can directly invade Britain. It began in september
1940 when the German Luftwaffe bombarding major British cities in a blitz of air attacks. British
citizens had to spend their night in underground bomb shelters. Eighty Canadian pilots join the royal
air force in order to prevent German attacks. The pilots faced a dangerous task and in the first few
weeks, 16 Canadian pilots were killed. However, as time went on there skills and success rates

The Death Of The Front Door Of A Home
In the front door of a home, a police officer is waiting to give terrible news to a family. "I am sorry,
your son died in a car accident. The evidence found in the scene leads to the conclusion that your
son was driving while texting." A simple text message can change your life forever and the life of
innocent people around you. The only reward you will gain from this event, is a toe tag; a tag that is
place only on dead people. Many people died each year while driving and texting and it is
disgraceful to see authorities not suspending the person's driver licensee or taking him to jail. I am
against this event, due to the painful consequences it contains. Each time a person is driving and
texting, they are holding a Russian revolver. The person can have luck and pull the trigger without
having any consequences, however the person can run out of luck and one day die in the scene. The
person at times does not die alone; instead, the person drags innocent people to the arms of death
with him. A couple of letters are not worth your life or the life of others, so why even try to take a
risk? If you are having trouble containing yourself from using your smart phone devised, there are
many ways to avoid a toe tag. In order to avoid a deadly car collision, an individual can text before
driving, place his smartphone devised out of his reached or just simply turn it off (Goldsborough).
Such simple tasks to do and yet many people decided to be rebels. It is amazing how people rather

Life On The Home Front During World War II
Mahmudul Rapi

Life on the Home Front During World War II During the 1930s. the United States faced one of the
greatest economic depressions in history, known as the Great Depression. Since many people
essentially manipulated the stock market to their advantage, they eventually got richer. However, on
October 29,1929, the stock market crashed since so many people wanted to sell their stocks but so
few people wanted to buy these products, which caused prices to collapse. This led up to issues such
as banking crisis, where banks who invested so heavily on the stock market lost so much money. In
fact, people who deposited money lose everything they had. In addition, factories that has
overproduced goods had also lost tons of money since businesses were producing far more goods
than people were consuming. All these events that led to the Great Depression. Although Franklin
D. Roosevelt came into office in 1933 and released his plans known as the New Deal which were
essentially government programs that provided aid to Americans, it did not change the fact that the
economy was still largely suffering. Meanwhile, tensions in Europe also increased as European
countries were devastated from the hard times occurring in their nation. Following totalitarianism as
a political system, many European countries were led by dictators. One of the most important
dictator, was German leader Adolph Hitler. Germany, who had lost a lot power and land, after the

The impact of world war one on the homefront
The First World War impacted significantly on the homefronts of the participating nations in many
different social, political and economic areas. There was a widespread restructuring of primary
industry with a large orientation towards militarism. There was massive political change where new
systems of power were introduced that gave governments a range of new powers including the
control over industry. The civilian population had severe restrictions placed upon their rights and
liberties due to the necessities that total war required.
The scale of the war forced all sectors of society to change and adapt to the growing scale of the
war. In 1914 the British government believed that the war would be a brief one and as a result there

This was not helped by the lack of attention paid to agriculture by the German government and the
destroyed crops of 1915–1916. Mortality rates for children rose along with those of adults and
elderly citizens. This starvation and poor living conditions led to the general disdain for the war but
due to the terrible losses and casualties already suffered it was thought that only victory would
suffice to somewhat offset these hardships.
Despite the massive arms stockpile that had been amassed by both sides of the conflict both sides
ran short and had to drastically increase their workforce and number of hours that they worked. In
Britain this was achieved by the formation of a three party coalition that has elements working to
find solutions to this problem. The shortage of workers was largely due to the lack of men in the
workforce as they were almost all enlisted in the army as soldiers. The deficit grew as the war went
on when more and more men were conscripted and enlisted. A new workforce was needed to work
in the jobs that they filled. Female workers largely filled a massive amount of these positions with a
smaller number of prisoners of war doing farming work. For the first time women worked in large
numbers in industrial factories, producing weapons and munitions for the men on the front lines.
They often worked in difficult and dangerous conditions

The Issues On The Home Front
There is no hiding the problems in the United States. Put that on hold: how about the issues on the
home front. That's right, there is a service opportunity in our area right now, and we need your help!
How can you help, you say? The service doesn't require donations of money, but we are seeking
your time and energy to assist our local Native American tribe. The drive to help is three main
purposes:
To educate the public that are unaware of the circumstances on the South Dakota Indian
Reservations.
To serve the youth in the Yankton Sioux Reservation.
To take action in resolving–overdue concerns in our local communities.
Education, Service, and Action are the three tasks that must be met to accomplish our purposes.
What does it really mean to serve someone or something? The United States has become out of
touch with the idea of serving someone. When we think of service we think of a server in the food
industry. When was the last time you had the opportunity to serve someone whole heartedly without
expecting anything in return? Have you ever heard of Pay It Forward? In the average day of a
middle–class citizen when is there time between a 40–hour–a–week job, a family to take care of,
and any extra time to have for yourself – where does the time to serve come from? We would
assume that most of the time we expect the favor to be returned no matter who it is. And sometimes
we even get a little ticked off, if it's not fair that we worked harder than the other person. Even

The Impact On The Australian Home Front
In August 1914, after the outbreak of World War I, an immense wave of support flooded Britain
from her ally, Australia. All Australian political parties, community leaders, newspapers and
churches were on–board with this major movement to help the mother country. All believed it was a
morally right and necessary commitment . World War I, 1914 – 1918 had a significant and long
lasting impact on the Australian home front. 'The civilian population ' had to undergo many changes
to cater for the war. At this time women's push for a larger role in the war effort caused a significant
and long lasting impact on the Australian home front, which has helped shape workplace gender
equality today. Conscription also impacted the Australian home front, meaning, compulsory
enlistment of people in military service. As well as the massive impact on Australia's economy from
the many trading cancellations through abandoned or cut off allies, which has helped build
Australia's economy to what it is today.
Prior to WWI, women were considered as unemployable and only worthy for teaching and small
shop keeping jobs. Unlike other countries like Germany and Britain during the war that allowed
women to take on the 'male' roles in society, the Australian government refused to let women take
up such roles. Instead women started organisations such as The Australian Comfort Fund (ACF)
who sent 'comfort boxes' to the boys on the front line. These contained cakes, cigarettes and other
luxury items . The

The Importance Of The Somme On The Home Front
In 1916, the battle of the Somme began, intending to end the war for the allies. It pitted an
unexperienced British army, against a professional German one. It was also, however significant in
many ways. Two of the main areas where the battle of the Somme was significant were in its
military value, and the reactions it caused, on the home front. The battle of the Somme, intended to
end the war that year, had ambitious objectives, it was significant for failing to achieve almost all of
these. One of these was Beaumont Hamel, a fortified village behind the German lines. The Battle
plan called for the village to be taken on the first day. The fact that the village was not taken until
the very end of the battle on the 13th of November, illustrates how much the plan failed.
Demonstrating the level to which the plan failed Private Anthony Stacey reports that this was a
death trap for our boys as the enemy just set the sights of their machine guns on the gaps in the
barbed wire and fired . Another objective, Serre, was not taken at all. In fact, the British staff were
so unaware of modern weapons, that they had cavalry ready to attack after the infantry broke
through. This is significant as it shows how inexperienced the British army was when it came to
trench warfare. Had the staff understood the trench tactics better, they would not have ... Show more

different battalions, so that losses to a village or town were spread

The Battle Of The Confederate Home Front
During the American Civil War, the Confederate home front faced many challenges as the war
progressed. While the soldiers of the Confederacy went off to fight in the war, daily life of the
Confederacy had to continue. The Confederate community of Richmond, Virginia is an example of a
Confederate community that had to continue with the grinds of everyday life. The Daily Richmond
Enquirer is a great source to use to understand the events and attitudes of daily life in Richmond.
During the month of October in 1862, there were three main attitudes that were being expressed by
the citizens of Richmond, Virginia. The first attitude was resentment towards the North. The second
was optimism about the Confederacy beating the Union and being a ... Show more content on

These arrests showed the villainy of the Union and their intimidation of unarmed citizens. The
second account was published on Oct. 14th. This article reported that the Daily Richmond Enquirer
had received a letter from an informant in Missouri. The letter, as quoted, stated that, "In short, our
citizens are being murdered by hundreds, imprisoned by thousands and robbed and plundered of
their property by the hundreds of thousands, and this you may report as truth, and nothing but the
truth." All three of the detailed accounts by the daily had helped reinforce the already present
resentment that existed between the Union and the citizens of Richmond. They resented the North
because the Union was pillaging their fellow Southerners. They felt that they were being vandalized
and victimized by the North. The second attitude expressed by the citizens of Richmond was
optimism about the Confederacy beating the Union and being a recognized nation. The Daily
Richmond Enquirer had multiple articles about the stance of the European nations on Confederate
recognition. The Confederate home front was very optimistic that European nations would
recognize the Confederacy quickly. The home front knew that if the Confederacy was recognized as
a nation by the European powers, then the Union would also be forced to recognize them as well.

Women's Role On The Home Front
With the problem of World War I, women had to band together and become strong to help defend
the nation while the men went to war. Women's new role on the home front was that many women
(nearly three million) were employed in food, textile, and war industries. Not only did women
maintain their households, but they also played the roles of helping to support the war. Having been
exposed to labor, they learned new skills which advanced women farther. The women and girls
cooked for the soldiers, nursed the wounded and sick and helped them survive their injuries and
their sicknesses. Not only were women working jobs in factories that had only been reserved for
white males but also African–Americans migrated from the rural south to the urban north,

The War On The Home Front
In a very short amount of time, America went a serious of events which had great influence on the
home front. Those two events were WWII and the Cold War. Civil rights, the cultural norms, and
society at large, had changed greatly during a short amount of time due to these events. The United
States was fight a war on two fronts, both at home and overseas. The wars overseas had great
influence and impact on the successes that would come over time on the home front. Without these
wars and times of trials and tribulations, the civil rights movement and society as a whole, would
most likely have not had made as large of a shift as it did. During WWII, two groups that had it very
"rough" on the home front, was African Americans and women. Both of these groups faced many
challenges, but both seen the war as a gateway into regular, white male society. "With the advent of
WWII, African Americans saw a further opportunity to press their cause. Hundreds of thousands
went to war, with the expectation that their service would earn them equal rights, once and for all."
(Many Rivers to Cross) When reflecting on the past though, African Americans have fought in every
American war since the revolution, and yet they were still bound by unjust laws. (October 8th
Lecture) Both groups had already overcame many diversities in the pasts, but were faced with an
opportunity to possible triumph over the ones they had left. African Americans before the war, also

The Importance Of The Work In The Home Front
In conclusion, the home front was a place where all the civilian activities took place inside the
nation that was already involved in the war. Living in the home front was difficult and there were
large struggles and also discriminations. Of course the work that was done in the home fronts was a
very important part of all the efforts that went towards winning the war. Governments became
involved with new issues such as rationing, manpower allocation, home defense, evacuation in the
face of air raids, and response to occupation by an enemy power. There were people who needed to

The Home Front Effect in The American Civil War
The Civil War was unlike any other war ever fought in America and had many effects on the home
front for both the North and the South. It is stated to be the first ever total war, which is a war
against not only the civilians but also the armies. The Civil War is also considered the first modern
war fought by the U.S. troops. Lincoln asked volunteers to sign up for only three months. Many
people thought the war wouldn't last long. However, the war continued on for four years. The Union
armies had around 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men and the Confederate army had approximately
750,000 to 1,250,000 men. The entire North and South society was affected by the war and desired

In similar, the role for women was also greatly changed in the South. Women took part in all aspects
of supporting the war effort. The women learned how to maintain farms, plantations, and factories.
Similar to women in the North, the women of the south also took part in and became nurses.
Richmond was later established, which was considered as a hospital center similar to that of
Washington and Alexandria as hospital centers in the North (Austin, 1975). All in all, the South was
unsuccessful in progressing in a favorable system for intermediate transportation. The South mainly
depended on their cotton and tobacco. They were helpless with diverting over to a food
management. The fighting from the war destroyed the crops and homes in the South. The North was
a diverse society and its foundation focused on an enlarged economy and agriculture. The North had
access to machinery and used them significantly. This allowed framers to develop more land and
supplied a growth in production. In importance, the factories had a positive impact on the war and
were capable of producing guns, ammunition, and clothing more rapidly. The Union tried such
methods as borrowing funds, taxing, and printing money to fund their war which in the end worked
for them. The Confederacy used the same methods; however, taxing the civilians was rejected by
the public and the Congress. To manage the army, the Union passed the Enrollment Act

The World War I, The Australian Home Front
During World War I, the Australian home front was impacted by a long and varying list of
occurrences during the period of time between the years of 1914 to 1918. The home front was
influenced politically through the arguments over the conscription vote and as Australia became
divided between the different war beliefs. It was also influenced by social change, as the use of
censorship drastically altered the Australians' views of war and women began to pick up odd jobs in
order to assist the soldiers as very few of them were allowed to directly help as nurses in Gallipoli.
There were also extreme economic alterations as the wages in Australia were pushed down and
prices were pushed up, and the country discarded major trade partners who had become their enemy.
***
The Australian home front during WWI was drastically altered politically through the conscription
vote that Billy Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia, believed necessary. 50,000 Australian men had
signed up for the war before the year of 1914 had come to an end – which was a rate of over 10,000
per month – but the enlistment numbers dropped way down to 6,000 for the month of the Gallipoli
landing in 1915. Once again, however, the numbers rose sharply on the home front after the news of
the landing came back home, as many wished to avenge their fallen countrymen, and nobody could
question the solemnity of the conflict. With five whole divisions overseas, Australia had to stay
committed to their recruitment for the

Is Siegfried's Involvement In The War On The Home Front?
Although there were a few scholarly communities that denounced war and the general enthusiasm
seemingly shared by the public, the majority stood behind the government's actions of enlisting men
and continuing violent engagements. Propaganda leapt from the page and into rest life in cinemas
across Britain, ensuring that civilians witnessed the true atrocities of the front in the safety of their
homes. However, soldiers who experienced films such as the infamous "The Battle of the Somme"
now grappled with a new personalized war on the home front. Though they indeed saw gruesome
realities, no man or woman could truly fathom what involvement in the war could do to a soldier's
psyche. A rift of misunderstanding rather than ignorance prompted Siegfried ... Show more content

Upon writing to his military officials that "[he] believe[s] that this war, upon which [he] entered as a
war of defence and liberation, has now become a war of aggression and conquest," Sassoon was
sent to a hospital with the all–encompassing diagnosis of "shell–shock" in order to silence anti–war
sentiments. This action taken by the government further prevented legitimate and honest
communication of warfront horror between soldiers and civilians. Sassoon continued expressing his
disgust for those remaining at home, more passionate than ever, with his disgust for those never
required to see the gore of the front lines, yet continued to support government drafting. In his
sonnet, "The Glory of Women", Sassoon venomously berates war–supporting women by referring to
material interest in war. As mental illness was not a major social concern until the late 1970s,
soldiers who returned emotionally troubled did not receive the same honor and recognition as those
who had been "wounded in a mentionable place." Women, ignorant of the true malignancy in men
like Sassoon, condemned those who ran as "hell's last horror breaks them,". Desertion, still
considered one of the greatest dishonors in war, identified the

The Role Of Identifying Areas That Narrate Home Front Stories
The role of identifying areas that narrate home front stories is challenging. Many factories, research
laboratories, government office buildings, housing projects, United Service Organization canteens,
military bases, schools, and day care centers were expanded or built during the Second World War.
Theaters in many of communities in the nation had a role in the sponsorship of the War through
driving and showing terrifying newsreels as well as uplifting entertaining movies. Bus and railroad
stations in small towns and major cities could not contain the millions of people passing through to
new defense jobs or military service. The alternative places represented negative wartime stories
with segregated military bases and housing, war relocation environments for individuals with
Japanese descent, prisons, and conscientious objectors were observed. Most of the sites were
engaged in racial conflict and labor confrontation in Pearl Harbor. All American society segments
were allowed to contribute towards the stunning achievement. Further, President Roosevelt shared
the literal truth in 1943 illustrating that all combat divisions and naval task forces were deliberate
squadrons for fighting planes with independent ammunition and equipment. The fuel and food
provided for the American people using civilian clothes was an allowance of offices and factories on
farms to satisfy the home needs. During the Yalta Conference, the obvious contribution within the
factories was an element in

The Wartime Elections Act proposed by Robert Borden weakened Canada politically as a country.
This act that was passed in 1917 took the vote away from citizens who had emigrated from enemy
countries. In addition, the act only gave army nurses and close relatives of soldiers the right to vote.

there was no one to help them because everyone was infected with this flu: "Power is a way how

power and killed lots of people. This infection decreased the population and it caused a lot of havoc
in the cities. Clearly, the Spanish influenza was a dangerous infection that killed many people and
affected Canada socially. Propaganda was a negative way of convincing people to change their
opinions. Propaganda was designed to make people believe in certain viewpoints and to think in a
certain way. Propaganda posters were created with bright colours and different pictures so that it
would catch people's attention and it would persuade men to join the army. Most of the posters
stated that "If we all get together or if a country gets together, we can win." This was the most
common phrase used on propaganda posters. This was also known as the "herd" effect because
everyone was doing it together. The war was becoming very expensive, so the government started

How Did World War One Change In The Home Front
Overtime one change in the home front in britain throughout the war was recruitment. At first many
joined, this was because of their attitude towards the war, they thought it would be over by
Christmas and Britain would easily win, they also thought it would be an adventure, this lead to
many young people to recruit themselves early on in the war. This is seen in source D as through
1914 and 1915 the brown family were happy to see these young boys join the war. They had happy
attitudes towards it and thought it was the right thing for the country. However, the war did end, and
recruitment numbers fell, this was because they learnt of the horrors of war. This then lead most
men to not signing up. The government then introduced conscription

I Want To Stay On The Home Front Dbq Essay
During WWI everyone was affected, whether it was the soldier in the battle field coming home with
shell shock, or the children left without a father for a few crucial years, or even a lifetime, or the
wives, mothers and grandmothers left at home to either pick up the financial burden or to continue
on in the best way they knew how without their loved ones. Overall if a person's country was at war
then they were affected and had to make sacrifices of food, gas, and other supplies necessary to fuel
the war effort. Europeans were affected on the home front when women had to go to work, when
they gained a greater sense of nationalism, and also when they had to ration food, and produce as
much as possible. When labor shortages got to the point where women were brought in in order to
fill the void, it signalled a turning point in history. It opened the door for women to stay in the work
force even after the war had ended. The need for workers was severe, to the point where "792,000"
women were added to the industrial workforce in Britain between 1914 and 1918. (Document 1)

Families On The Home Front During Wwii

  • 1. Families On The Home Front During Wwii Families on the Home Front during WWII by Ewa Bieciuk HIST 2200– U.S. History Since 1877 Summer 2015 Prof. Hardin September 1st, 1939 is a day that changed the course of history. Lives were lost, families ripped apart, towns destroyed, and jobs were created. World War II had just begun with the majority of the main countries in our world participating in the war that would ultimately kill millions of soldiers and civilians. Two years later, on December 8th, 1941 after the Japanese surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war fully. During this time, the U.S. enlisted the help of the entire nation; soldiers, factory workers, nurses, and doctors were required both overseas and on the home front. While many men were sent to fight over–seas or prepare at combat training on bases in the U.S., factories and other business were left with a shortage of workers. World War II encouraged, or more accurately, forced, women and wives to leave their homes to begin working. A familiar image that many Americans are familiar with is of the women flexing announcing "We Can Do It!", which is greatly recognized as a symbol of the female presence in the workforce. Young adults dropped out of school to help out in numerous ways. The amount of children working also increased greatly. Desperate measures to save money and help in the wartime effort lead to many drastic changes in roles and lifestyles of American families on the home front. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. On The Home Front: Military Communication On The Home Front The Civil War was very hard on families, causing most of them to sacrifice people in their families, most families had all of the young men in their family taken out of their jobs on farms and factories. This left the women and children to tend to the large farms and hold the weight of the house. Also, since the demand for supplies for the war increased it created more jobs for the people to fill which forced more people into labor. It also effected families personally, having their sons/brothers in war was constantly nerve racking and scary, every day they were constantly dreading receiving any news or letters, fearing the life of their family members. On the plus side there was definitely enough jobs, as mentioned earlier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hoop skirt was also very popular to help support their dresses, as dresses were the only accepted way of dressing. Also, because so many people's family members and friends where dying/dead they used mourning dresses to express it. They used mourning dresses to express love and feelings. Men often wore felt hats and held up their pants with suspenders or leather belts depending on location. Men also wore loose fitting vests and white shirts which signaled that you weren't a laborer. Obviously clothing and fashion depended on your location at the time, but those are the general fashions in the Civil War. During the Civil War people became very conscious about their resources and money. Also the government became more conscious on saving their money and resources. Especially in the south since they had so little resources they had to reuse a lot of their preexisting materials. Overall the Civil War had a huge impact on people even if they weren't on the front ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Losing Vietnam On The Home Front Nick Smith U.S. History A Mr. Nance March 23, 2016 Losing Vietnam on the Home–front Forty six years have passed since the United States officially stopped their involvement in Vietnam. Not since the Civil war had the country been so torn. Every American family was impacted, losing husbands, sons, and daughters. Over fifty thousand Americans were killed and many more still suffer deep physical and emotional scars . Veterans took their own lives, were treated as social outcasts, or ended up on the streets with the homeless. The Vietnam conflict was a war that many did not understand and that left a nation questioning the government they had always trusted. It wasn't until Johnson began his massive bombing campaign against North Vietnam ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... involvement in the Vietnam War. Some advocates within this movement advocated a unilateral withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Vietnam. In 1965 the movement began to gain national prominence. Aggressive actions by police and protesters turned the anti–war demonstrations in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention into a riot. News reports of American military abuses, such as the 1968 My Lai Massacre, brought new attention and support to the anti–war movement bringing it to its height. The movement continued to prosper over the span of the conflict. The Mỹ Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass killing of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. The massacre, which was later called "the most shocking episode of the Vietnam War", took place in two hamlets of Sơn Mỹ village in Quảng Ngãi Province. These hamlets were marked on the U.S. Army topographic maps as My Lai and My Khe. The U.S. military codeword for the alleged Viet Cong stronghold in that area was Pinkville, and the carnage was initially referred to as the Pinkville Massacre. Later, when the U.S. Army started its investigation, the media changed it to the Massacre at Songmy. Currently, the event is referred to as the My Lai Massacre in the United States and called the Son My Massacre in Vietnam.

  • 5. The Importance Of The Outbreak: Supporting The Home Front The Outbreak: At the outbreak of the war, most women still found themselves in their homes doing nothing new other than the usual house chores while others such as the suffragettes were campaigning for change. This however all changed when the men headed abroad to fight, women found themselves taking over the men's roles in factories, shops, and offices across the country. Supporting the home front: Between 1914 and 1918, more than a million women joined the workforce to fill the gap left by the men at war. Finding themselves working diversely from nurses and cleaners to police patrols and explosives manufacturing for the war. Yet they still earned only half as much as men working the same jobs men did and were still constricted with what they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. World War I and the Home Front Essay World War I began in 1914 but America remained neutral until its entrance into the war in 1917. The U–boats sinking of the British liner Lusitania in 1915, the sinking of five American ships in 1917, and the "Zimmerman telegram" sent from Germany to Mexico led up to America's declaration of war. America's involvement in World War I not only impacted the war front but also the home front. When America entered World War I in 1917 the U.S. Government enforced many measures on its citizens. Some of these measures violated constitutional rights. The biggest measure inflicted on the American population was censorship. • 7. Summary: The Influence Of Propaganda On The Home Front Propaganda refers to when biased information is spread to influence a certain audience to promote another political opinion. Propaganda greatly influenced the home front by convincing civilians to get involved by downplaying the WW1. They came up with many ways to convince homefront to defend their country and claimed that it would be a very "swell" place to go. They designed posters to convince the public to join the army. The posters usually had many different phrases. Some of the most famous ones were such as "Soldiers of the Soil, Boys to the Front." This phrase was used to persuade young boys to take over the farm work previously left by the men who had gone to the war. They were also made to attract young boys to join the Canadian military. Another very popular phrase used was "Buy Your Victory Bonds" on an anonymous poster with a Canadian soldier called "Uncle Sam" pointing at the audience. There were also other diseases such as the "trench fever," "Malaria," "influenza," "typhoid." Another way that they had used propaganda was when they used the method of "bandwagoning" on the home front, which persuaded others to join as well. • 8. Home Front Mobilization Historians credit Britain with a highly successful record of mobilising the home front for the war effort, in terms of mobilising the greatest proportion of potential workers, maximising output, assigning the right skills to the right task, and maintaining the morale and spirit of the people. Much of this success was due to the systematic planned mobilisation of women, as workers, soldiers and housewives, enforced after December 1941 by conscription. The women supported the war effort, and made the rationing of consumer goods a success. In some ways, the government over– responded, evacuating too many children in the first days of the war, closing cinemas as frivolous then reopening them when the need for cheap entertainment was clear, sacrificing ... Although the sun is creeping under the horizon, Oscar is still as energetic as a rabbit!Because his parents were getting rations along with Oscars sister Elle, Oscar is staying home alone. He was doing well, at home alone, until the radio sounded, " German soldiers are coming to the house!" those were the voices of his panicked parents, "Go to your room and shut off the radio!" Consequently , Oscar froze; the boy had never done this alone before. The house was very compact, and it is full of tiny hiding places. The place Oscar hides is upstairs in his room. He entered his closet and stuffed himself into the miniscule hole in the shelf. Just as Oscar shut himself in, he heard the German soldiers outside of the house. Another three minutes passed, and Oscar heard someone yell. At once, they all rushed up the stairs. The boy could not tell how many were there , but there were many. I want to go to my loving family and feel safe and protected again. By the time you read this, I could be dead like the majority or still battling in the war. The war is barbaric. Aside from that, sometimes I would do stuff that makes me feel normal on my free time, such as reading a book or talking to other soldiers. I did not want to make new friends, considering the position all of us are in. We were put into this position to get one main job done. However, the inevitable happened, and I became close to some of my fellow soldiers. We talked about a lot of topics, including our interests and our past. It almost seemed normal, as if we were not in the middle of a war, where one of us could die at any instance. Before I go into another restless night, I think about my friends who have died for this war, and finally get the chance to mourn about them. It's not easy knowing that your fellow soldiers have died and you're still alive. • 12. The Oklahoma Home Front On April 6, 1917, the United States entered the Great War with the vast majority of the American populace supporting the ingress. Although there were some dissenting opinions on America intervening in the war. This dissent was typically seen from marginal groups of Irish and German immigrants who either had harsh feelings toward Great Britain or felt uneasy about fighting against family members in Germany. These demographics would be swayed by society to reform their views, or in some extreme cases be forced to. Furthermore, several groups who were not expected to support the war were given an opportunity to show their patriotism. Surprisingly, this could be seen by groups of African and Native Americans who were wanting to gain credibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These sentiments could be seen across the country, and in worse cases citizens acted upon these notions. As Farwell recalled, "Those bearing German names were often molested, and in places lynched." Because of this those bearing German names changed them and several towns did as well. These views were commonly rooted in the belief that the German immigrants were spies, which was a nearly identical assumption the Young Turks made against their Armenian demographic. Nevertheless, these beliefs would dominate the American public throughout the war, and one cannot help but to theorize that the excessive propaganda and government intervention caused some of these biases to formulate in a small town like Tulsa. As it would be difficult not to want to defend one's country if the enemy being presented is of a barbaric gorilla rapaciously clutching onto a woman that symbolizes the Statue of Liberty. Even those who were illiterate in Tulsa would be able to discern from this poster that the enemy they were facing was not to be shown mercy or sympathy. • 13. Home Front Rationing During the war, people received ration books. The books included the person's name, address, city and state. People were also given ration coins that allowed cashiers to give change for food purchased with ration stamps. People were given these because items during the war were scarce. The first food item's prices that were "frozen" on the market by the United States Office of Price Administration (OPA) were sugar and coffee. The reason things were rationed was due to little production. Was items were the priority of being produced over household items to help win the war. This meant that everything needed to be rationed for everyone to get their equal share. Sugar, meat, tires, silk, gasoline, shoes, nylon, and more were all rationed to American people. Chicken wire, used for fencing in animals was also being rationed. Pretty much anything you could think of had to be rationed, because the most important focus at the time was the war. The title of "Few Nylons" meant that women had rations on stockings. Also their clothes were cut down to save material. Their hem and belt width was cut down to two inches. The cuffs on the sleeves of their clothes were no longer allowed. The availability of nylon stockings was scarce. The restrictions for women's apparel saved yardage of material for other clothes used in war. Propaganda, rationing, and political views all played a part on American citizens in World War I. "Propaganda was a huge tool used to sway citizens toward a particular political view. "The U.S.A. entered World War One in April 1917, but lost no time in producing many more propaganda posters than any other single nation. Previously, every war was because of a great and direct threat to American existence. In the case of World War I, we went to war to preserve democracy. Germany certainly wouldn 't have wiped us off the map. America also tried to maintain neutrality, electing Woodrow Wilson on the slogan "He kept us out of war." (fff.org) The American people were easily manipulated into anti–German and pro–war beliefs. More "American–like" names were given to certain things. Hamburgers became Salisbury steaks because Hamburg was located in Germany. Sauerkraut became liberty cabbage, because sauerkraut was a German name. Beethoven 's music was banned, and burning of German books was common. "These techniques were highly successful. The government found that overt and subtle forms of propaganda fanned the requisite passions of pride and prejudice to fight a total war in Europe. Indeed, aggressive propaganda helped to skirt constitutional and statutory limitations on war policies — policies that would never pass rational scrutiny in peacetime. Some of the people who suffered the most on WW1 were the soldiers and people who lived in the Home Front. Soldiers didn't live a normal life, they lived in horrible conditions. It was dirty, that's why there were many animals like rats, frogs, insects etc., that eat the soldier's food and contaminated it, by eating contaminated food soldiers got sick that's was one of the main reasons why soldiers died. When Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7 of 1941, the United States were forced to enter the war and panic gripped the country as a whole and made many fear of plausible attacks to the United States. However, instead of just cowering in fear, the majority of Americans converted this fear into their acceptance that the only way to win this war, was to fight back through their very own, home front. The home front was the war efforts back in the United States, in which many Americans made imperative sacrifices that turned the tide of victory in favor of the United States and Allies. The United States government is doing this for safety issues and the protection of Americans, but many are against the whole idea of having the government spy on you and others actually agree with it. John Yoo who was the deputy assistant general in the Justice Department's office of Legal Councel and he also took part in the legality of the NSA domestic surveillance program. Yoo supports government surveillance. One of Yoo's arguments is since that the enemy is a group of people and not a nation, these terrorists can possibly disguise themselves as American citizens. The NSA has to identify where certain communications can reveal certain threats. Al Qaeda is disguising messages and the NSA is trying their best to interpret them and found out the meanings. Yoo says that Al Qaeda uses the Internet, uses cell phones, and talks on the phone like average innocent Americans. So NSA needs to be able to interpret all types of communication. Life On The Home Front During World War II Mahmudul Rapi 841 Life on the Home Front During World War II During the 1930s. the United States faced one of the greatest economic depressions in history, known as the Great Depression. Since many people essentially manipulated the stock market to their advantage, they eventually got richer. However, on October 29,1929, the stock market crashed since so many people wanted to sell their stocks but so few people wanted to buy these products, which caused prices to collapse. This led up to issues such as banking crisis, where banks who invested so heavily on the stock market lost so much money. In fact, people who deposited money lose everything they had. In addition, factories that has overproduced goods had also lost tons of money since businesses were producing far more goods than people were consuming. All these events that led to the Great Depression. Although Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office in 1933 and released his plans known as the New Deal which were essentially government programs that provided aid to Americans, it did not change the fact that the economy was still largely suffering. Two of the main areas where the battle of the Somme was significant were in its military value, and the reactions it caused, on the home front. The battle of the Somme, intended to end the war that year, had ambitious objectives, it was significant for failing to achieve almost all of these. The World War I, The Australian Home Front During World War I, the Australian home front was impacted by a long and varying list of occurrences during the period of time between the years of 1914 to 1918. The home front was influenced politically through the arguments over the conscription vote and as Australia became divided between the different war beliefs. It was also influenced by social change, as the use of censorship drastically altered the Australians' views of war and women began to pick up odd jobs in order to assist the soldiers as very few of them were allowed to directly help as nurses in Gallipoli. There were also extreme economic alterations as the wages in Australia were pushed down and prices were pushed up, and the country discarded major trade partners who had become their enemy. *** The Australian home front during WWI was drastically altered politically through the conscription vote that Billy Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia, believed necessary. 50,000 Australian men had signed up for the war before the year of 1914 had come to an end – which was a rate of over 10,000 per month – but the enlistment numbers dropped way down to 6,000 for the month of the Gallipoli landing in 1915. Though they indeed saw gruesome realities, no man or woman could truly fathom what involvement in the war could do to a soldier's psyche. A rift of misunderstanding rather than ignorance prompted Siegfried ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon writing to his military officials that "[he] believe[s] that this war, upon which [he] entered as a war of defence and liberation, has now become a war of aggression and conquest," Sassoon was sent to a hospital with the all–encompassing diagnosis of "shell–shock" in order to silence anti–war sentiments. This action taken by the government further prevented legitimate and honest communication of warfront horror between soldiers and civilians. Sassoon continued expressing his disgust for those remaining at home, more passionate than ever, with his disgust for those never required to see the gore of the front lines, yet continued to support government drafting. In his sonnet, "The Glory of Women", Sassoon venomously berates war–supporting women by referring to material interest in war. As mental illness was not a major social concern until the late 1970s, soldiers who returned emotionally troubled did not receive the same honor and recognition as those who had been "wounded in a mentionable place." Women, ignorant of the true malignancy in men like Sassoon, condemned those who ran as "hell's last horror breaks them,". Desertion, still considered one of the greatest dishonors in war, identified the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Role Of Identifying Areas That Narrate Home Front Stories The role of identifying areas that narrate home front stories is challenging. Many factories, research laboratories, government office buildings, housing projects, United Service Organization canteens, military bases, schools, and day care centers were expanded or built during the Second World War. Theaters in many of communities in the nation had a role in the sponsorship of the War through driving and showing terrifying newsreels as well as uplifting entertaining movies. Bus and railroad stations in small towns and major cities could not contain the millions of people passing through to new defense jobs or military service. The alternative places represented negative wartime stories with segregated military bases and housing, war relocation environments for individuals with Japanese descent, prisons, and conscientious objectors were observed. Most of the sites were engaged in racial conflict and labor confrontation in Pearl Harbor. All American society segments were allowed to contribute towards the stunning achievement. Further, President Roosevelt shared the literal truth in 1943 illustrating that all combat divisions and naval task forces were deliberate squadrons for fighting planes with independent ammunition and equipment. The fuel and food provided for the American people using civilian clothes was an allowance of offices and factories on farms to satisfy the home needs. During the Yalta Conference, the obvious contribution within the factories was an element in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Canada's home front during WWI had a negative impact on the Canadian people politically, socially and economically. The Wartime Elections Act proposed by Robert Borden weakened Canada politically as a country. This act that was passed in 1917 took the vote away from citizens who had emigrated from enemy countries. The Spanish Influenza came in three waves and the second wave was the deadliest of them all. During the first wave, people were bleeding from their ears, eyes and nose and there was no one to help them because everyone was infected with this flu: "Power is a way how society functions within it." John Barry is talking about how the Spanish flu came with a lot of power and killed lots of people. This infection decreased the population and it caused a lot of havoc in the cities. Clearly, the Spanish influenza was a dangerous infection that killed many people and affected Canada socially. Propaganda was a negative way of convincing people to change their opinions. Propaganda was designed to make people believe in certain viewpoints and to think in a certain way. Propaganda posters were created with bright colours and different pictures so that it would catch people's attention and it would persuade men to join the army. Most of the posters stated that "If we all get together or if a country gets together, we can win." This was the most common phrase used on propaganda posters. • 39. How Did World War One Change In The Home Front Overtime one change in the home front in britain throughout the war was recruitment. At first many joined, this was because of their attitude towards the war, they thought it would be over by Christmas and Britain would easily win, they also thought it would be an adventure, this lead to many young people to recruit themselves early on in the war. This is seen in source D as through 1914 and 1915 the brown family were happy to see these young boys join the war. They had happy attitudes towards it and thought it was the right thing for the country. However, the war did end, and recruitment numbers fell, this was because they learnt of the horrors of war. This then lead most men to not signing up. The government then introduced conscription ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. I Want To Stay On The Home Front Dbq Essay During WWI everyone was affected, whether it was the soldier in the battle field coming home with shell shock, or the children left without a father for a few crucial years, or even a lifetime, or the wives, mothers and grandmothers left at home to either pick up the financial burden or to continue on in the best way they knew how without their loved ones. Overall if a person's country was at war then they were affected and had to make sacrifices of food, gas, and other supplies necessary to fuel the war effort. Europeans were affected on the home front when women had to go to work, when they gained a greater sense of nationalism, and also when they had to ration food, and produce as much as possible. When labor shortages got to the point where women were brought in in order to fill the void, it signalled a turning point in history. It opened the door for women to stay in the work force even after the war had ended. The need for workers was severe, to the point where "792,000" women were added to the industrial workforce in Britain between 1914 and 1918. (Document 1) This is a huge ...
