Causes Of Discrimination In South Africa
Although African nations didn't advocate for LGBTQ acceptance or tolerance, the majority of people didn't antagonize or disparage personal choices of
others, because the tribes functioned more as a single unit with a singular goal rather than a class system as portrayed by the European Settlers. Along
with their political norms, their ideologies, primarily of Christian belief systems, were imported as well. They were forced upon nationals bringing
attention to and demonizing what up until then wasn't perceived as abnormal or deviant behavior. This methodology of divide and conquer was
motivated by both religious and political end goals. Pitting natives against each other weakened the existing tribe structure, making it easier to assert
dominance and eventual takeover. This period of conformity marked the beginning of recognized systemic discrimination against LGBTQ through the
enactment of laws and embellishment of the new societal norms brought with the colonization. Relationships and actions that were largely tolerated if
not celebrated became uncomfortable, abnormal and forbidden. This further helped to pit tribal members against each other, families against each other
and communities against each other. Many of the existing anti–LGBTQ laws today are remnants from those settlement colonial times.
Prior to apartheid control, white supremacy and racial segregation was prime in South Africa and was greatly intensified thereafter. The vulnerable

Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power
Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon them. A person who abuses such power is
considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it
takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who abused his power and saw himself as
someone who was a man of influence.
Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no education, but quickly found his place in the world. He
joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962. He
had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a few assassination attempts, Obote began to question
Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the government
with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com).
Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off by executing members of the Acholi and Lango
tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire Asian
population, resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing,

Saving The Last Rhino Essay
As a child, most kids Loved dinosaurs. I watched many dinosaur movies and played with Dinosaur action figures with my friends in the park almost
every day. But over time, moving into my adult years, I have become more interested in species that have very recently become extinct or are on the
verge on extinction. What fascinates me is that my Grandfather has told me stories about seeing animals such as Tasmanian Tigers yet; there isn't a
single trace of them left on the planet. It shows just how destructive humans can be.
In South Africa, The rhinoceros is a prestige animal and is part of our heritage and famous Big Five. So for me to think about how the Rhinoceros
could be to my grand children of what the dinosaur is to us, Puts a shiver down my spine.

Essay about Primary Education in Uganda
Primary Education in Uganda – A Policy Analysis
Over the past five years, Uganda's education system has proved both effective and successful. Although in the process of further development, it has
nonetheless served as a model for many developing African countries. The Ugandan government, with President Yoweri Museveni at its forefront, has
determined primary education to be one of the major channels toward poverty eradication and as a vital resource for economic and social development.
The Ugandan government has made a national commitment to eradicate illiteracy and educate its citizens through the 1997 initiative, Universal
Primary Education (UPE). All levels of government, the private sector, grass–root organizations, local and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a consequence, policy was adopted that would better Uganda's financial position, which led to an emphasis of secondary and higher education in
order to fill the demand for "high–level" manpower. (Bell, p. 4) The emphasis soon changed as it was realized by the Commission of Education in
Uganda in 1965 that the content and structure of primary school education should also be geared toward meeting the economic needs of the country. P.
Beghin wrote in Recent Trends in Primary Education Policy in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, "primary education is no longer regarded as a mere
preparation to secondary and higher education. Primary school is, in the view of the Syllabus, a terminal education for a part of the pupils, which at
present is actually the majority of them." (1968, pg. 6) From this time, documented Ugandan education policy on issues such as instructional language,
examinations, and scientific literacy was expanded and reformed to include primary education.
During the political turmoil of the 1970s and 1980s when leadership changed hands, the education system suffered, yet functionally operated by relying
on local and regional–based administrators and nation–wide standardization. (Upenn Sas) As the political situation settled in Uganda, education became
the new hot topic and was regarded as an issue of international development. President Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement
Government, initiated a review of education policy and

credibility as they have published multiple historical accounts. Similarly, to the previous clip, but to a greater extent the documentary uses confronting

If you were to look on the map of Africa and try to find Uganda, you might have trouble finding it because it 's smaller in size when compared to
surrounding countries. Uganda is like a little giant when matched to some of the other countries surrounding it. Although, the country is small its
population is what makes it big. It was predicted that Uganda's population would reach 47 million by the year 2025 which says a lot for a country
its size. Now, if you ever visit a city in Uganda, like the Kampala which is the capitol, you would see that the streets are congested with people and
since the cities are so congested scores of people are relocating to other countries where the streets are less congested and jobs are available. The
reason people are flocking to the cities is because it increases their chances of getting a job so they can support their

Essay on May Joseph and Mississippi Masala
May Joseph and Mississippi Masala
Today's world is characterized by a global environment of rootlessness. Political upheavals, poverty, and opportunity cause populations to shift and
move, and people that are citizens of one country to move to another. The resulting disconnect between the traditions of their homeland that they have
internalized, experiencing these as "home," and the new environment that they move to where the culture is vastly different calls into question what
"home" really is, and what citizenship means.
In her book Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship, May Joseph explores the issues of migrancy and displacement among modern
peoples. She contends that citizenship "is not organic but must be acquired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Idi Amin's policies are forcing Asians to leave Uganda, Mina's father Jay asks his lifelong native Ugandan friend Okelo, "Where should I go?
Where should I go? This is my home" (Nair). Okelo replies, "Not any more, Jay. Africa is for Africans–black Africans" (Nair). Although the pain of
being forced to leave Uganda so that its indigenous people can regain control of the economy is massive for Jay, it is this remark by his closest friend
that devastates him, because what it tells him is that he does not belong in Uganda. He is not wanted, not accepted–not even by his best friend.
The ideological framework of nomadic citizenship that Joseph builds in her book serves as an excellent framework from which to analyze Mississippi
Masala. The issues that she raises in terms of the Asians being forced to move out of Uganda, having to transport their citizenship culturally in order to
feel at home, and the multicultural merging of cultural identities among cultural nomads are dealt with also in the film. Mississippi Masala also
highlights how racism becomes a part of nomadic citizenship.
Demetrius is a Southern black man in Mississippi during an era before blacks have attained a greater degree of respect and freedom. He knows what it

Ethnography Big Men
I chose the classic Ethnography Big Men in a Small Town. I found this topic to be interesting because I can imagine men in the small villages and
towns of Africa working diligently and hard for small causes in their towns. The men and women in the African cultures are not working to buy the
best car, home, purse, etc., their focus is to mainly work hard to make sure they have a place to eat and sleep. Big Men in a Small Town just from
reading the list of classis ethnographies, gave me the insight that maybe this text is shedding light on how hard to men and families work for very little

Agents that affect Africa's population are many: the temperature has an effect, cross–cultural interaction, and other oppressions all effect how the land
is run. African culture has traits of power, whereas as American's view money as power. People in Africa view food and stones, such an ivory and
gold, animal's skin all for power. From past centuries, what someone in leadership could bring to the community, tribe made him someone in power.
For instance if a leader, killed a deer, or food for his community night after, night that man would become in power. In today time, this is still similar,
but more refined. A man of power in these tribes and communities needs to bring protection and welfare to the people they look after. Whereas in
developed community powers comes at what politic can have the power to move or make laws, using other government system to work under to keep
laws in order. In Africa, the laws other tribes, are handle on a micro–level then macro–everyone basically under the same laws. Not every town or
community will have the same levels of set laws, under values and cultural boundaries. Reading the articles, I did not find too many concepts that I was

Life of Idi Amin Essay
Idi Amin was a soldier first and foremost. He imposed a scheduled and militaristic way of life on his followers. His own military record paints the
picture of his rise to power. During British colonization of Uganda Idi Amin began his endeavor into the military. It was in 1946 that Amin enlisted in
the King's African Rifle's, KAR, the British army in colonized Africa. (Boddy–Evans)
Upon his entry he was placed as assistant cook, a far from glorious position. However he managed to rise through the ranks. He became a Corporal
in 1948 and was stationed in Burma, Somalia, and Kenya. This was during the British situation in Kenya that was referred to as the Mau Mau revolt.

He did so out of fear of being taken out by Obote because he was seen as a threat to the ex–presidents authority. Secondly he performed a coup because
he acknowledged that he was capable of gaining a higher status of power. Though there were some attempts on Amin's administration he remained in
office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled
with fear. His crimes against humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was these erratic actions
that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File)
Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy. Obote declared a strong national economy with
little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial independence
there was an 11% GDP growth in the economy. However Amin's administration left the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda)
Amin was welcomed by most western states such as the United Kingdom and Israel. He was seen as a gentle giant and worthy of going into business

The Non Citizen Asian Population Of Uganda
Imagine being given only 90 days to pick up your life and leave a place you call home. The Non–Citizen Asian population of Uganda was given only
three months, ninety days to be precise, to leave the country. Later Asians who were Ugandan citizens were also expelled. Idi Amin's reasoning for
expelling 60,000 Asians from Uganda is still unclear. There are many theories put forth, but they remain mere speculation. As a result of Idi Amin's
erratic behavior, jingoism, and ruthlessness, Uganda's economic ultimately suffered to this day from this act. In 1971, President Idi Amin demanded a
review of Uganda's Asian community citizenship. In August of 1972, he decreed that all Punjab Asians residing in Uganda must leave. The deadline to

had always been the target of resentment in Uganda; once Amin came into power, he acted upon this tension. Many erratic announcements in the span
of a few days targeted various groups. The first proclaimed, "All Asians holding Indian, Pakistan, and Bangladesh passports must leave." Few took this
announcement seriously until Amin signed the decreed. Many were astonished by this and did not want to believe it. This is because when Amin came
to power, he made the working conditions better and many of the Asians who were in the business industry. Another announcement followed, adding,
"All non–citizen Asians, even those holding Kenyan, and Tanzanian passports must leave. Again, many could not believe what was occurring. These
announcements were life shattering, especially when it was apparent to both the Africans and Asian that Amin was serious. Next, came an
announcement exempting professional Asians from explosion, this was received with trepidation. This last announcement drove a wedge between the
Professional and non–professional Asian communities. The professionals opted to leave voluntarily. Yet another announcement proclaimed that no

Idi Amin rose to power in 1971 through a violent military coup. Amin and his army successfully overthrew Uganda's former president Milton Obote
with the foreign aid from both the British and Israeli Government. From the British Amin received aid through large amounts of money being sent to
his personal bank account and from the Israelis he received arms. Amin's success at gaining and holding power was largely based on foreign
assistance. "Amin's regime survived as long as it did in part because it always found one or another imperialist power to patronise it" (Fall of Idi Amin

The economic embargo that was instituted as well as the negative perception around Amin caused Uganda to fail economically and to have no
foreign powers want to help because they did not want to be seen as supporting a cruel leader. Amin's brutal regime caused countries to look down
at Uganda as a place that was uncivilized and that was not worth any ones time. Through all Amin's missteps and failures his inability to run a
successful country without foreign support was his biggest weakness. He was not able to have good relations with countries either because of rash
decisions which offended those countries or because of bad public image led to a country to weak to sustain itself. Amin's final attack on Tanzania
was a failure and he was forced to leave Uganda and seek refuge in Saudi Arabia for the rest of his life. "In the span of eight years, Amin had

General Idi Amin Dada And The Act Of Killing
In both documentaries, General Idi Amin Dada and The Act of Killing, the authors spent a considerable amount of time with the perpetrators of mass
murder. In The Act of Killing Joshua Oppenheimer gets access to the executioners, gangsters and paramilitary leaders who carried out millions of mass
killings. In General Idi Amin, Barbet Schroeder spent time with the third Ugandan President and one of the greatest mass murderers, Idi Amin Dada.
Schroeder was able to document his firsthand account of events. These documentaries demonstrate the kind of extraordinary access the authors were
given and their ability to document the unspeakably painful truth.
In both documentaries, the perpetrators seem to have the impression that they are in control of the documentary. For instance, in The Act of Killing,
the executioners set up every scene playing as victim and perpetrators, and even going as far as hiring other locals to play as victims. They acted as if
they were the producers of the film by creating the conditions, like choosing costumes, applying makeup, and setting up the villages to burn them down.
Throughout the documentary, the executioners directed the content and edited the scenes. Likewise, Anwar Congo, one of the most brutal executioner,
took the responsibility of sitting in the director 's chair. He exclaimed that it is important to tell the story of the killings in a step by step process. This
shows how the author is skillfully suggesting to viewers that the film is

Ambassador James C. Swan And The Chief Of Mission David Brown
Ambassador James C. Swan and DRC Deputy Chief of Mission David Brown should be at the top of the list regarding diplomatic efforts with
President Kabila and his advisors. Swan and Brown would be responsible for disseminating our potential policy efforts in a positive light and
garnering support for said efforts. The United States Agency for International Development and Department of State should also be heavily involved
in any policy changes. Each respective agency would reallocate funds as necessary. As of now, only $42 million of USAID's estimated $330 million
(2016) of foreign aid goes towards governance measures. It is critical that this amount be increased – provided that the Kabila regime is receptive to our
ideas and willing to work with us. The success of any aforementioned policy change depends on the DRC government's ability to implement it.
Additionally, we should also work with the Department of Treasury in restructuring current sanctions on the DRC. If the Kabila regime proves
compliant with our policy measures, then we should urge the Treasury to reduce sanctions. The Department of Defense should play a role in
establishing a legitimate military presence in the DRC. They can do so by joint military exercises meant to build military capacity and strengthen the
DRC government's ability to deal with threats from armed groups within the country and abroad (namely, threats from Rwanda and Uganda). Finally,
we should coordinate with the African Development

From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its
existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending a
Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed
between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were

Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he
declared an "economic war" on the Asian population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran most of
the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service. Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave
them three months to exit Uganda. They were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's supporters. Amin
not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went

Graduating with a major in African studies, he served with the Peace Corps in Kenya, where he worked with small business start–ups and took side trips
to Ethiopia and Tanzania. Although he loved working in Kenya, Martin developed a disdain for the Western managers and workers who isolated
themselves in expatriate ghettos and congregated in the capitals first class hotels. His creed became "Don't draw attention to yourself and, above all,
learn and respect the culture." At the end of his Peace Corps stint, Martin was determined to return to and work somewhere in Africa. After earning an

Garrigan In Idi Amin
Haile Selassie Emperor of Ethiopia was famously quoted as saying "Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could of acted; the
indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to
triumph." This quote could relate no more so than in the novel The Last King Of Scotland with the protagonist Nicholas Garrigan who continually
takes no action against the atrocities he hears and witness whilst he is Idi Amin's personal physician. We can view Garrigan in two different
perspectives one being that he is a good person who did nothing or the other being he is a good person that did bad things.
The novel is a memoir of Nicholas Garrigan, a young scottish doctor who moves to uganda in 1971 seeking adventure. He begins work at a small
hospital in Mbarara however he soons moves to kampala to become Idi Amin's personal physician. Once there things begin to turn for the worst in
uganda, Idi Amin begins to persecute certain ethical and political groups. Things however soon become even worse with mass executions, Garrigan
struggles with ethical choices whether to use his position to step in and take action or to keep himself safe. He once again faces a moral dilemma when
Stone the British foreign office representative asks Garrigan to assassinate Amin in return for both money and help to leave the country.
We often perceive Garrigan to be a bad person due to his continuous selfish

Forgotten. Isolated. Alone. The people of Uganda live in constant fear of one man who has torn their lives apart. Joseph Kony is the leader of a
rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army. The LRA began in 1986 under the rule of Alice Lakwena and was called the Holy Spirit Movement.
Lakwena was an Acholi and claimed to be a mystic fighting for the rights of her people ("Kony, Joseph"). She led a violent rebellion against the
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and when she was exiled, Joseph Kony took over her movement. Kony formed a new group, with Lakwena's
followers, called the Lord's Resistance Army (Johnson). His goal was to create a new government based on the Ten Commandments and to purify the

It's as if we don't exist. The government says the LRA are no longer a problem, but I know that's not true. I beg of you, please talk to others about
what has happened to us," said an eighty year old chief struck by grief after the LRA killed his son. The LRA has committed many atrocities
throughout their existence, but one in particular stands out among the rest. On December 14, 2009 the LRA entered the Haut Uele district of the
Makombo area in the Democratic Republic of Congo ready to kill. Over the course of four days, they attacked ten villages, killing 321 civilians
and abducting over 250 people. At least eighty of the people abducted were children. Those who died were mostly adult men, and they were found
tied to trees where they had been hacked to death by machetes. Those who lived, were tied up in chains and forced to carry the LRA's pillaged
goods as they marched off to attack more villages. People who did not comply with the LRA, tried to run away, or walked to slow, were killed.
Families were separated and many people had to watch as their loved ones were killed. The attack on Makombo was one of the largest massacres
committed by the LRA, but it was not the only attack. Dozens of attacks have been reported in villages near Bangadi and Ngilima and many more

The Lord's Resistance Army, or LRA, is a brutal rebellious group led by Joseph Kony. The fight between the Ugandan government and the LRA is one
of the longest running battles in African history dating back to 1986. To many experts, the LRA is one of the most brutal forces in the world. The LRA
is notorious for committing human rights violations including murder, mutilation, rape, widespread abductions of children and adults, sexual slavery,
and looting of villages. Throughout its years of existence, the LRA has grown to be a feared group by many people and surrounding countries in
Africa. The LRA emerged in northern Uganda in 1987, the year after Yoweri Museveni, a rebel leader from southern Uganda, seized power, ending

The Course of Political Development in Uganda and its Effect on Economic Development
Development has recently become a new buzz word in international relations. Through an exploration of political, social and economic development
around the globe, scholars are trying to understand which policies are most beneficial, and why certain policies are effective and why some fail. The
connection between different types of development is often an important part of this research as well. The connection between political and economic
development is of specific interest since the end of the Cold War and the failure of most communist–based systems. The emergence of capitalism as the
dominant world economic system at the conclusion of the Cold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the relationship between the two. The lack of political
development in Uganda since independence from Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that
Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development.
To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to examine the political atmosphere of independence.
Under the colonial system, Uganda was a protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of forced labor
and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political
parties formed, the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the UPC was
nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people
who were the most favored under British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP and increased the
political power of Milton Obote.
At independence in 1962, Obote, of the UPC, was appointed Prime

To what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past? This is the question that this
essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over
Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962
and the interim period between them from 1962 to 1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large
fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs had left on the nation. The British introduced ... Show

These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but
didn't intensify until the fifties when classism and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the sixties
when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the 70's when these issues were addressed with severity.
Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what extent
were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in
varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control and
influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and
substantial social reform for nearly a decade. Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self–interested
agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a
detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past?"

Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and constant threats to his authority turned Amin into
an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental in
Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building" techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in

Americans often take for granted the various liberties afforded to citizens of this country. In America some believe they are oppressed, and while no
society is perfect, the excellent conditions in this country do not even compare to that of many other countries worldwide. Citizens of this wonderful
country will never fully understand how fortunate they are unless they change their perspective and educate themselves about the realities of those in
other countries, like Uganda for example. Children in Uganda endure an extreme amount of physical and mental suffering every day. The use of child
soldiers in Uganda is one of the greatest examples of oppression of children to date; the actions that have been taken by the Ugandan government,
United Nations, European Union, and the United States have done little to solve the issue, therefore government reforms and the defeat of LRA leader

The use of child soldiers in Uganda is a result of the war that began in 1986 between the Lord's Resistance Army, a group of rebels, and the Ugandan

Lord's Resistance Army Essay
The Lord's Resistance Army insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign that started in 1987. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group was led
by Joseph Kony. Kony proclaims himself as the "spokesperson" of god. His objective is to overthrow the Ugandan government, establishing a theocratic
state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition.
The early history of the rebellion began in January of 1987. Kony made his first appearance as a spirit medium. The former Uganda People's
Democratic Army commander Odong Latek played a huge part in helping Kony rebel. Latek convinced him to adopt conventional guerrilla warfare
tactics. These were primarily surprise attacks on civilian targets. Kony wanted to prove the inability of the government to protect their populace. In
March of 1991, "Operation North" was presented. This was a plan to destroy the LRA by cutting away its roots of support among the population
through heavy–handed tactics. The Minister Betty Oyella Bigombe, created "Arrow Groups" generally armed with arrows, as a form of local defense.
However, the LRA was armed with modern weaponry, there for the groups were overpowered. In response to this particular operation the LRA brutally
harmed numerous Acholi people, to whom they thought to be government supporters. Following Operation North, Bigombe initiated the first
face–to–face meeting to settle the dispute between representatives of the LRA and government. The LRA stated that they would not surrender, but

Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights
Under section 145 of the Ugandan penal code, which was implemented during British imperial rule, any men who have sexual relations with other men
can be punished by life in prison. In 2013, the Anti–Homosexuality Bill was passed, which criminalized gay sex, same–sex marriage, sex while one
partner is HIV positive, sex with a minor, and "aiding" or "promoting" homosexuality. President Museveni was initially reluctant to sign the bill, but
he set up a team of scientists at the Ministry of Health to study homosexuality and declared that he would make his decision based on their findings.
After the Ministry of Health announced that homosexuality was not a disease or an abnormality, Museveni concluded that homosexuality was a
choice and signed the bill. It was declared null and void in August 2014 on a technicality, but the draft of a similar bill was leaked to the public
recently. According to a report published by Sexual MinoritiesUganda, there have been 264 documented cases of discrimination against the LGBTQ
community since the bill came into full force, including job loss, eviction, violence, sexual assault, denial of healthcare, torture by state, and family
banishment. The Ugandan government has not investigated any of these cases. The Ugandan government is persecuting the LGBTQ community to
gain political power and fight westernization, and in response, some nations are supporting them while other nations and Ugandan LGBTQ rights
activists are condemning their actions.

Museveni was a former member of the UPC, in the south. In 1985, a northern Acholi General Tito Okello overthrew Milton Obote, hen second–term
president and ethnic Langi,in a fight between Acholi and Langi soldiers in Kampala, central Uganda. (S3 371) This again characterizes the power
struggle and conflict between two opposite actors once again over power. After the fight, the Acholi retreated and regrouped in the north. After taking
Kampala, Ugandans and Acholi's established Tito Okello as the new President. Okello then was pressured by the people into entering negotiations with
southern rebel groups, namely the National Resistance Army (NRA) led by UPM leader Yoweri Museveni. After a failed cease–fire and attempt to
establish control over his troops, Milton Obote was overthrown in early 1986 by Yoweri Museveni. (S3 371) Museveni's army, the National Resistance
Army (NRA) immediately began conducting revenge attacks and massacres against the Acholi's, causing many to flee to Sudan. (S1 142) The attacks
from Museveni, a southern Ugandan, in mid–1986, forced many northern Ugandans to have heightened concern that Museveni's forces would attempt
possible retaliation against Obote during a time when an insurgency against Museveni's army began in some of the traditional Acholi areas of northern
Uganda. The retaliation against Obote was believed to be against his brutality during his reign. (S2) Acholi

Causes Of Discrimination In South Africa

  • 1. Causes Of Discrimination In South Africa Although African nations didn't advocate for LGBTQ acceptance or tolerance, the majority of people didn't antagonize or disparage personal choices of others, because the tribes functioned more as a single unit with a singular goal rather than a class system as portrayed by the European Settlers. Along with their political norms, their ideologies, primarily of Christian belief systems, were imported as well. They were forced upon nationals bringing attention to and demonizing what up until then wasn't perceived as abnormal or deviant behavior. This methodology of divide and conquer was motivated by both religious and political end goals. Pitting natives against each other weakened the existing tribe structure, making it easier to assert dominance and eventual takeover. This period of conformity marked the beginning of recognized systemic discrimination against LGBTQ through the enactment of laws and embellishment of the new societal norms brought with the colonization. Relationships and actions that were largely tolerated if not celebrated became uncomfortable, abnormal and forbidden. This further helped to pit tribal members against each other, families against each other and communities against each other. Many of the existing anti–LGBTQ laws today are remnants from those settlement colonial times. Prior to apartheid control, white supremacy and racial segregation was prime in South Africa and was greatly intensified thereafter. The vulnerable social and economic ... • 3. Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence. Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962. He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the government with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com). Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire Asian population, resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But over time, moving into my adult years, I have become more interested in species that have very recently become extinct or are on the verge on extinction. What fascinates me is that my Grandfather has told me stories about seeing animals such as Tasmanian Tigers yet; there isn't a single trace of them left on the planet. It shows just how destructive humans can be. In South Africa, The rhinoceros is a prestige animal and is part of our heritage and famous Big Five. Although in the process of further development, it has nonetheless served as a model for many developing African countries. The Ugandan government, with President Yoweri Museveni at its forefront, has determined primary education to be one of the major channels toward poverty eradication and as a vital resource for economic and social development. The Ugandan government has made a national commitment to eradicate illiteracy and educate its citizens through the 1997 initiative, Universal Primary Education (UPE). As a consequence, policy was adopted that would better Uganda's financial position, which led to an emphasis of secondary and higher education in order to fill the demand for "high–level" manpower. (Bell, p. 4) The emphasis soon changed as it was realized by the Commission of Education in Uganda in 1965 that the content and structure of primary school education should also be geared toward meeting the economic needs of the country. P. Beghin wrote in Recent Trends in Primary Education Policy in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, "primary education is no longer regarded as a mere preparation to secondary and higher education. Primary school is, in the view of the Syllabus, a terminal education for a part of the pupils, which at present is actually the majority of them." (1968, pg. 6) From this time, documented Ugandan education policy on issues such as instructional language, examinations, and scientific literacy was expanded and reformed to include primary education. During the political turmoil of the 1970s and 1980s when leadership changed hands, the education system suffered, yet functionally operated by relying on local and regional–based administrators and nation–wide standardization. • 8. Essay on May Joseph and Mississippi Masala May Joseph and Mississippi Masala Today's world is characterized by a global environment of rootlessness. Political upheavals, poverty, and opportunity cause populations to shift and move, and people that are citizens of one country to move to another. The resulting disconnect between the traditions of their homeland that they have internalized, experiencing these as "home," and the new environment that they move to where the culture is vastly different calls into question what "home" really is, and what citizenship means. In her book Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship, May Joseph explores the issues of migrancy and displacement among modern peoples. Although the pain of being forced to leave Uganda so that its indigenous people can regain control of the economy is massive for Jay, it is this remark by his closest friend that devastates him, because what it tells him is that he does not belong in Uganda. He is not wanted, not accepted–not even by his best friend. The ideological framework of nomadic citizenship that Joseph builds in her book serves as an excellent framework from which to analyze Mississippi Masala. The issues that she raises in terms of the Asians being forced to move out of Uganda, having to transport their citizenship culturally in order to feel at home, and the multicultural merging of cultural identities among cultural nomads are dealt with also in the film. Mississippi Masala also highlights how racism becomes a part of nomadic citizenship. Demetrius is a Southern black man in Mississippi during an era before blacks have attained a greater degree of respect and freedom. He knows what it is like to be oppressed because of his color. The men and women in the African cultures are not working to buy the best car, home, purse, etc., their focus is to mainly work hard to make sure they have a place to eat and sleep. Big Men in a Small Town just from reading the list of classis ethnographies, gave me the insight that maybe this text is shedding light on how hard to men and families work for very little rewards or pay. Agents that affect Africa's population are many: the temperature has an effect, cross–cultural interaction, and other oppressions all effect how the land is run. African culture has traits of power, whereas as American's view money as power. People in Africa view food and stones, such an ivory and gold, animal's skin all for power. From past centuries, what someone in leadership could bring to the community, tribe made him someone in power. For instance if a leader, killed a deer, or food for his community night after, night that man would become in power. In today time, this is still similar, but more refined. A man of power in these tribes and communities needs to bring protection and welfare to the people they look after. The United States Agency for International Development and Department of State should also be heavily involved in any policy changes. Each respective agency would reallocate funds as necessary. As of now, only $42 million of USAID's estimated $330 million (2016) of foreign aid goes towards governance measures. It is critical that this amount be increased – provided that the Kabila regime is receptive to our ideas and willing to work with us. The success of any aforementioned policy change depends on the DRC government's ability to implement it. Additionally, we should also work with the Department of Treasury in restructuring current sanctions on the DRC. If the Kabila regime proves compliant with our policy measures, then we should urge the Treasury to reduce sanctions. Basic factors include immigration and the rise of religious fundamentalism. In recent years, for example, the cultural identity is effective in mobilizing people in defense of national identity. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade. Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self–interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past?" • 29. Idi Amin Research Paper Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and constant threats to his authority turned Amin into an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental in Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building" techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in /out group hypothesis. Amin used his Ugandan identity and his poor upbringings to connect with the people of Uganda. Amin also vested trust in a small number of advisors that he would confide in completely, those people would become his most important allies. This duality of his personality hid the unhinged leader that he was from his people which helped him create such a strong state. Furthermore, Amin often lied about the atrocities being committed in Uganda helping people live in a state of blissful ignorance. The actions of Yoweri Museveni have had a vast negative effect on Uganda and its neighboring nations. Countless numbers of Ugandans have already suffered under Museveni's leadership. By the 1980's Museveni's government began to directly affect the population by being unable to fund some of the basic utilities that are a necessity to the people of Uganda such as roads, railways, and power plants. Uganda has the economic potential with its thriving agriculture, however because of political instability, Uganda is the most destitute and least developed African country. If human rights into Uganda is going to improve, purging these companies from Uganda is going to need to be the first step. Uganda has also illegally entered the Congo on the hunt for natural resources. Uganda invaded into the Congo and was responsible for killing hundreds of people and the extraction of wealth and resources from the Congo, and therefore, the Congolese people. Numerous human rights groups have noted that Ugandan forces "have blatantly exploited Congolese wealth for their own benefit and that of their superiors at home."(Nampewo). The conflict in Uganda has begun to spread to neighboring countries, such as the Congo creating more conflict just to be able to economically support itself. He hopes he does not have to kill anyone today, but he can never be sure. Abothi never wanted to be a soldier, but he was forced to by the people that were now his commanders. Abothi is only 10 years old, he is forced by terrorist groups to kill and serve as a soldier for them. They kidnapped him from his home, along with any siblings, he might have had were all taken from their homes. I then asked him if he had ever heard of Kony 2012 he said, "I heard about it back in 7th grade but never really knew what it was about. • 33. Child Soldiers In Uganda Child Soldiers in Uganda Americans often take for granted the various liberties afforded to citizens of this country. In America some believe they are oppressed, and while no society is perfect, the excellent conditions in this country do not even compare to that of many other countries worldwide. Citizens of this wonderful country will never fully understand how fortunate they are unless they change their perspective and educate themselves about the realities of those in other countries, like Uganda for example. Children in Uganda endure an extreme amount of physical and mental suffering every day. The use of child soldiers in Uganda is one of the greatest examples of oppression of children to date; the actions that have been taken by the Ugandan government, United Nations, European Union, and the United States have done little to solve the issue, therefore government reforms and the defeat of LRA leader Joseph Conley would be of benefit to Uganda and contribute to solving the issue of child soldiers in their country. The use of child soldiers in Uganda is a result of the war that began in 1986 between the Lord's Resistance Army, a group of rebels, and the Ugandan government. First, the leader of the LRA decided to utilize children to fight the war; "Kony used ever more brutal methods to avoid defeat by Museveni's army. He kidnapped children to act as slaves and trained them to fight" (History: The Lord's...). The Lord's Resistance Army, or the LRA, began to lose support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Lord's Resistance Army Essay The Lord's Resistance Army insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign that started in 1987. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group was led by Joseph Kony. Kony proclaims himself as the "spokesperson" of god. His objective is to overthrow the Ugandan government, establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition. The early history of the rebellion began in January of 1987. Kony made his first appearance as a spirit medium. The former Uganda People's Democratic Army commander Odong Latek played a huge part in helping Kony rebel. Latek convinced him to adopt conventional guerrilla warfare tactics. These were primarily surprise attacks on civilian targets. Kony wanted to prove the inability of the government to protect their populace. In March of 1991, "Operation North" was presented. This was a plan to destroy the LRA by cutting away its roots of support among the population through heavy–handed tactics. The Minister Betty Oyella Bigombe, created "Arrow Groups" generally armed with arrows, as a form of local defense. However, the LRA was armed with modern weaponry, there for the groups were overpowered. In response to this particular operation the LRA brutally harmed numerous Acholi people, to whom they thought to be government supporters. Following Operation North, Bigombe initiated the first face–to–face meeting to settle the dispute between representatives of the LRA and government. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was re–elected to a third term after the Ugandan constitution was amended in 2005 to abolish presidential term limits. The opposition however, were not satisfied with the results of February 2011 elections, condemning them as full of rigging. His presidency has been marred, however, by invading and occupying the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Second Congo War, resulting in an estimated 5.4 million deaths since 1998. Museveni had allowed the Rwandan Patriotic Front to use Uganda as a base during the 1990 offensive into Rwanda and subsequent civil war. Given their historical ties, the Rwandan and Ugandan governments were closely allied and thus Museveni worked closely with Kagame throughout the First Congo War. Ugandan soldiers were present in Zaire throughout the conflict and Museveni likely helped Kagame plan and direct the army. • 38. Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights Under section 145 of the Ugandan penal code, which was implemented during British imperial rule, any men who have sexual relations with other men can be punished by life in prison. In 2013, the Anti–Homosexuality Bill was passed, which criminalized gay sex, same–sex marriage, sex while one partner is HIV positive, sex with a minor, and "aiding" or "promoting" homosexuality. President Museveni was initially reluctant to sign the bill, but he set up a team of scientists at the Ministry of Health to study homosexuality and declared that he would make his decision based on their findings. After the Ministry of Health announced that homosexuality was not a disease or an abnormality, Museveni concluded that homosexuality was a choice and signed the bill. It was declared null and void in August 2014 on a technicality, but the draft of a similar bill was leaked to the public recently. According to a report published by Sexual MinoritiesUganda, there have been 264 documented cases of discrimination against the LGBTQ community since the bill came into full force, including job loss, eviction, violence, sexual assault, denial of healthcare, torture by state, and family banishment. The Ugandan government has not investigated any of these cases.
