WOMEN’S ISSUES
IN DEVELOPING
NATIONS
By: Angela Adam
WOMEN ARE SEEN AS LOWER
CLASS
 “The most common form of violence reported in most sites

was intimate partner violence (70.9% in Ethiopia province to
15.4% in Japan city of ever-partnered women, with 9 of 13
sites above 40%)” (Devries et al, 2011)
 Have no rights
 Are often tortured
 Scared to tell police or other about what really happened
 Some men use withholding of food as abuse
 This leads to hunger and malnutrition in woman
 Often leads to death
WOMEN IN AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES
 “According to estimates made by the united

nations, women, who are one half of the worlds
population, own only one percent of the worlds
property” (Bennet)
 Men control land, woman work but have no rights
 Men have strength over woman
 Men control food, decide when and who get’s food
 Leads to hunger and malnutrition in woman
WOMEN GET LITTLE TO NO
EDUCATION
 Woman get very little if any education
 Leads to them not knowing how to take care of their

children
 Will then change child’s diet not knowing what to do
 Will lead to the child getting sicker and often dying
because of the mothers lack of education
WOMEN ARE USED AS SEX
SLAVES
 “Several countries in Eastern Europe, including Moldova, are well-

known for high numbers of women who are trafficked for forced
sex work [3]. Trafficked persons are frequently subjected to high
levels of violence and abuse and at risk for symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety”
(Ostrovschi et al, 2011)
 Captured and sold into trafficking or sex slaves
 Husbands sell woman into trafficking or sex slaves
 Live in small compact unsanitary rooms
 Abused if don’t do their job
WOMEN ARE USED AS SEX
SLAVES
 Woman don’t know any other life, captured young
 Know they will be shunned upon by their

families/society of they leave
 Think this is the best life they will have
 Government is no help to woman
 “Since return, a fifth were not in contact with either of
their parents, and less than a third of women reported
having someone in whom they thought they could
confide.” (Ostrovschi et al, 2011)
TREATMENT OF WOMEN
UNETHICAL
Rights theory

Have right to life, well-being, decisions, food

security
Men and government take this right away
