Symbolism In The Gift Of The Magi
Did you know that some people don't exchange gifts during Christmas? The reason for that is because people don't have enough money to buy one
or because they hate each other. Did you also know that people who exchange gifts are known as the magi? The magi person that are very wise. O.
Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi," uses symbolism and irony, such as Della cutting her hair to get money so she could buy a gold watch
chain for Jim and Jim selling his watch to buy Della a comb with jewels, to reveal the theme of wisdom. O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the

We see irony throughout the story. We see this whenever Della runs to the hair articles shop to see how much Mrs. Sofronie would buy her hair
for. Mrs. Sofronie said "Twenty dollars." Della responded by saying, "Give it to me quick." Della was proud of her hair and you could consider it
to be her prized possession. She cut the thing she loved the most about herself because she was determined to find a gift for Jim. She wanted to
give Jim a gift that would enjoy and be pleased with. At last, she found the gift for him, she thought that "It surely had been made for Jim and no
one else. The gift was a gold watch chain for Jim's prized possession, the gold watch that his father gave him. The watch chain's value "was in its
rich and pure material. Because it was so plain and simple, you knew that it was very valuable. All goods things are like this." Della knew in her
mind that "It was good enough for the watch." Later, Della held the watch chain in her hand waiting on Jim to come in. When he walked into the
house, he was shocked to see that Della's hair was gone. Later, he said "I want you to understand me, Dell, nothing like a haircut could make me
love you any less. But if you'll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in." He threw something tied in paper on the table. Della pulled off
the paper and cried tears of joy. It was a comb with jewels that Della saw in a shop window and loved for a long

Mauss Gift-Exchange
From Gifts to Commodities: An Introduction to the Anthropology of Exchange
Introduction
Marcel Mauss suggested that there exist two distinct types of exchange in human societies: gift–exchange and commodity–exchange. He also classified
societies based on the dominant type of exchange in their economic system. For instance, small–scale, traditional societies are associated with gift
economy, whereas Western societies are associated with commodity economy. Mauss' distinction between the two types of exchange was widely
accepted in mainstream social anthropology, yet some scholars have suggested that the mutually exclusive contrast between gifts and commodities
exchange is unjustified (Rus, 2008), that is, commodity–exchange does indeed contain elements that are traditionally attributed to gift–exchange. This
essay will explore the major differences between the two types of exchange based on Mauss' theory on reciprocity, and demonstrate with examples the
presence of 'hybrid' form of exchange in capitalist societies.
Functions of gift–exchange and commodity–exchange Gift–exchange and commodity–exchange serve different purposes and functions in the society.

(1954, p.13) Another function of gift–exchange in many preindustrial societies is to re–distribute resources among the communities. During the
Potlatch festival in the Pacific Northwest coast in Canada and North America, rich people give away their wealth and possessions to other individuals
of the same community. However, they do not receive material presents in return but recognition, prestige and status from the rest of the community.
Hence, gift–exchange allows wealth to flow in uni–direction, from the rich to the poor, preventing the accumulation of wealth in a small group of

Brief Summary Of The Book 'The Gift' By Mauss
In the book 'The gift', Mauss demonstrates how in all societies, individuals should have the rights and freedom to choose whether they want to give
gifts, however, he notices that giving gifts are compulsory in most societies. Mauss speaks about a study that explains how giving gifts is done as a
whole rather than between individuals. The gifts were not only materialistic such as possessions and prosperity but through festivities and events such
as rituals and dances. These type of gifts resemble peace, respect, and honor. Mauss describes this as a 'system of total services' which indicates that
the gifts represented are beneficial to the whole society through reciprocation. In this book, Mauss explains the diversity of gift giving in different tribes

Also, another form of gift giving is the kula trade which is seen as a prestige and a honorable trade held in reserve for the chiefs only in the tribe.
When gifts are given to chiefs, it needs to be passed on from chief to chief after a specific period of time. Mauss explains different types of terms
for different gift giving. One of the many terms he mentions, the term 'kudu' which means that a gift must be given and must be reciprocated at an
equal value. The three important rules that need to be followed in a Potlatch is to give, to accept and receive, and to reciprocate. If any of the rules
are broken, a punishment comes along with it in a form of slavery. Mauss speaks as well about different religions and cultures and about their gift
giving. He explains in the law of Hindu that the gift given to an individual is beneficial to their present life and in their next life. Through Mauss's
observations, he has realized that not everything is surrounded around the idea of business and selling, it is more than that. It is about kindness,
communal service, unity, cooperation and

Lee Cronk Indian Gift Giving Analysis

In his article, Reciprocity and the Power of Giving, Lee Cronk discusses the different cultural meanings placed upon the act of gift giving. The act of
exchanging of gifts has many unique implications, which are based on the culture of the giver and the recipient. Cronk discusses the idea of
reciprocity, which is the expectance of exchange associated with gift giving. Cronk brings up the example of "Indian Gifts" which was a term that white
settlers connected to the Native American people's expectation of receiving an equivalent gift after being given one. This expectation is rooted into the
culture of the Native American people, which was misunderstood by the settlers. The real implication of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than observing the action, it is important to observe the motives behind the act. By understanding the emotions of the actor, we are then
able to gain a greater understanding of the act and the culture that influenced the actor. While reading this article I couldn't help but reflect on my
own experiences in gift giving. I love giving gifts, for a long time I tried so hard to give my closest friends the best gifts possible. Not only would I
try to give them an object or trinket that they wanted, I would also try to make the experience of opening the gift as memorable as possible. I
would make gift boxes that were filled with balloons or boxes that would shoot confetti once opened. I did all this because I thought I was doing it
for my friends but after reelecting about it, I realized that I did it for my own benefit. I did all of these elaborate gifts with the intention of making
myself seem artistic and amazing in my friends eyes. This correlates to what Cronk wrote about in this article because it shows that no act is done
without an expectance of reciprocity. I initially believed that I was doing something out of kindness but it seems as though I was also doing it receive

The Gift of Fear
"The Gift Of Fear," a psychology book written by Gavin De Becker, is an extremely useful and informative read. It gives valuable advice about how
to act upon human intuition, how to recognize threats, and defines what real fear is and it's purpose. I found the book to be extremely interesting. This
book provided me with a sense of understanding on violence and fear and I feel much better prepared when it comes to recognizing dangerous
situations.
My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when a stranger is a potential threat. This was fascinating to me because I've been told
since I was just a little boy to beware of strangers. But with all these warnings about strangers I had never been told how to recognize when a ... Show

When a person gets that "gut feeling" that something just isn't right, it should never be ignored. Our natural human intuition is giving us that "gut
feeling" for a reason. And that sensation of danger can save lives. One example of how human intuition works was given in the book; a man
walked into a convenience store, had a gut feeling he needed to get out of there, left, and found out later that day the convenience store had been
robbed and the cashier had been shot and killed. This seemingly random feeling of danger that spared this mans life was not random at all. His
intuition let him know to have fear because the cashier looked as if he was fearful when the man walked into the store and also there was a second
nervous looking customer wearing a long concealing jacket while it was hot outside. His intuition let him know that there was a potentially dangerous
situation even if he wasn't looking for the signs that were there. This applies to my life because everybody can experience these "gut feelings" from
human intuition; I know now to act upon them and to never ignore them because they have the capability to save your life. One thing I learned about
fear is that it can basically act for us. With fear humans can make critical decisions that they wouldn't dare make without fear edging them on. A story
that particularly shocked me was the story of a young woman named Kelly. She followed her

Introduction The charismatic gifts debate is an important topic today developed over time in three phases. The first phase began with the Pentecostalism
in the first century. The second phase began in the 1960s with the charismatic movement. The third phase began in the 1980s in the Western world.
Charismatic gifts are wisdom, knowledge, faith, gift of healing, performance of miracles, prophecy, ability to differentiate spirits, speaking in tongues,
and interpretation of tongues. These gifts are stated in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is working in each of us and gives
us gifts to do the ministry that God has called us to. "But evangelical Christians are divided on the issue of whether charismatic gifts are for today and
should be practiced today." There are two sides to this debate. On one side is the continuationist view and on the other side is the cessationist view. The
question being asked is "Were these gifts intended by God to be used throughout the entire church age until the Lord returns?" The continuationists
asserts that these gifts are meant for Christians today along with all the other gifts in the New Testament and will continue to the end of the age. The

The Most Meaningful Gifts In Chaim Potok's The Chosen
The Most Meaningful Gifts are Hidden in Plain Sight American singer and actress Ethel Waters once said, "We are all gifted. That is our
inheritance." Whenever people think of someone as gifted they tend to think of superpower type qualities. The Chosen, a book written by Chaim
Potok, depicts several different characters pertaining different talents. Characters such as Reuven, Danny, or even Mr. Malter all possess abilities that
help them in life. The types of gifts displayed in the book are not what people usually think of as special gifts, but a special talent can seem as little as
forgiving easily and genuinely caring for others well–being or as big as recalling information at a moments notice. In The Chosen, characters such as
Reuven, Danny, and Mr. Malter all demonstrate certain gifts that they maintain. To begin with, Reuven Malter demonstrates many of his different types
of gifts throughout the story. Two of the key traits Reuven reveals are the gifts of compassion and themind for logic. In the beginning of the book
Danny tries to kill Reuven by hitting him with a baseball, however, he later comes and apologizes to him and Reuven forgives him (Potok, 70). Not
everyone, when provided with a chance, will forgive someone who wronged them. Instead pf clinging onto his resentments Reuven graciously forgives
Danny, an act that requires great compassion to fulfill. Another example of Reuven's gifts is his ability to solve logic problems, "Well, they try to

Examples Of A Gift Etiquette
Sympathy Gift Etiquette
When someone close to you loses a friend or family member, it can be difficult to know the best way to offer support. Many questions come up: how
can we help? What should we do?
Many people traditionally send flowers, plants, and fruit baskets. This is thoughtful and shows you care. On the other hand, when my sister
experienced a death in her family last year, she became overwhelmed with what to do with all of the flowers that came to the house in the first
couple of days, and then a week later the flowers were dead and she felt so lonely. Like I said, when someone dies, "normal" things can become very
difficult, often in unexpected ways.
So what is the appropriate etiquette for gift giving for sympathy and funeral occasions? You want to be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Send yourself. Be present. It is easier to see what the needs are when you yourself are physically sharing the hard moments with the bereaved.
2. If you can't be there yourself, this is when flowers, cards, plants, and baskets become more meaningful. Again, remember that flowers die quickly,
and the bereaved will have to throw them away. Potted plants usually work better – they require little maintenance, last a long time and symbolize hope
and peace (Peace Lilies for example).
3. Make a donation in the name of the departed. In my sister's case, when her son died, we ended up making a donation to a nonprofit that collects the
playful drawings of school children and delivers them to the elderly, shut–in, and infirm. We did this to try to share the love he brought into the world
with others less fortunate, even though he was gone.
4. Give the family a permanent keepsake – something with the departed's initials, a favorite saying of theirs, a shadowbox of their most precious
belongings, or special photos. For Christmas the year after my nephew died, my aunt gave the family a toy train in which each car of the train was a
letter of his name. This was very meaningful and the kind of thing that lasts

How Do Gift Exchanges And Commodity Transactions Shape...
How do gift exchanges and commodity transactions shape your everyday interactions with others?
The flow of gifts and commodities between individuals is a significant aspect of our society as a whole. Gifts are things, often material objects, that are
exchanged between groups or individuals that have some kind of relationship. The value of this gift is dependent on the nature, significance and goals of
the relationship. Commodities are objects that move between people through transactions with minimal interaction or attachment. In this piece, I reflect
on the way humans in today 's society engage with gifts, commodities and one another, with a particular focus on the celebration of Christmas.

Following that, the recipient is obligated to receive the gift with gratitude and in the correct manner. Finally, there is an unspoken obligation to
reciprocate, though not necessarily immediately.
One of Western society's most significant holidays and gift giving occasions is Christmas, which takes place annually in late December. Christmas
originated as a Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is, however, celebrated as a cultural tradition by the majority of
individuals in Western society, not just followers of Christianity. It is a public holiday in many countries, often centers around a festive meal, and
the exchange of gifts is tradition. Gifts are not only given between people with well established relationships, often presents are given to
coworkers or teachers for example. The value of the gift does vary though depending on the extent of the relationship between the giver and
receiver. One is expected to give a very valuable and thoughtful present to their loved ones, but can give something more generic or cheaper to a
person they have less of a connection with. For example, a mother may give her daughter an heirloom that has been passed down to each generation
or a husband might buy his wife a expensive piece of jewelry. On the other hand, a friend may give another friend a gift card or money, and coworkers
might give one another a box

The Gift of the Magi is a short story about a young, less fortunate couple. Christmas is around the corner, and Della is concerned about what to get

While following her we get to see her points of view and access her thoughts. Besides describing Della's actions and thoughts the narrator also has
some observations regarding what is around her. In some occations he talks directly to the reader. He uses a great deal of extra sentences to give
the reader a better feeling of what is going on. In reality the purpose of this story could be put in a shorter context as it has an actual clear message.
The title is corresponding to the content in the story. It also has a symbolic meaning to it. The Magi is refering to the three wise men in the Bible.
The three wise men come baring gifts to the baby Jesus, which are concidered great gifts. In the three last sentences we see a comparison between the
story and the Bible. "Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi." Also the
narrator mentions King Solomon when describing the value of Jim's watch. This indicates that Jim and Della chose wisely when giving each other
presents and found something of value to the other. They gave each other the greatestgift of all, which according to the narrator makes them just like the

Everybody loves Christmas. The suspense of not knowing what is under the wrapping paper drives us absolutely wild. The joy of spending time with
family, friends, and your significant other is the best! But why do loved ones give each other gifts? In O' Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi, two
young lovers sacrifice their own most prized possessions to get the other a Christmas gift. Ironically, each one gets the other a gift to be used for their
prized possession; however, the gifts cannot be used because they no longer have any use. Author O' Henry uses irony to enhance, or magnify, the true
meaning of Christmas: to selflessly give to someone you love to show your love for them.

Even though Della and Jim made unwise choices in how to finance their gifts for one another, they were the wisest in the sense that they sacrificed
their own most prized possessions to give to the other. "And here I have related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat
who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house." (Page 251) The narrator claims that Della and Jim unwisely
gave up their valuables to display their love for one another. "But in a last word to the wise of these days, let it be said that of all who gives gifts
there two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the magi." (Page 251)
The whole theme of the story is stated here by the narrator. He alludes to the Magi, or wisemen who bring the best gifts, but the narrator stated that
Jim and Della gave the best gift of all, and they are wiser than the Magi. Besides the fact that Jim and Della were wise to sacrifice their own prized
possessions for each other, the way that they handled the situation and still loved each other after shows true wisdom. After all, Christmas is about

Why Do Anthropologists Study Gift Giving?
Why study Gifts?
The anthropology of gifts has been mostly studied in the context of non–Western cultures. The important roles of gift giving were highlighted by
classical anthropologists such as Malinowski, Mauss and Levi–Strauss. They stressed the significance of reciprocity and obligation suggested in gift
exchange and that gift giving is a one practice of material expression that integrates a society.
Gift giving is essential to the studies of many anthropological debates such as sociability, alienation, sacrifice, religion and kinship.
The anthropology of gifts is also crucial to economics. Entire businesses and industries rely on gift giving as it helps understand the relationships in

from friends and charities, and as such I personally believe there is no such thing as a free gift.
Reciprocity is very important in Pakistani communities. As covered in A. Shaw's 'A Pakistani Community in Britain,' the term lena–dena literally
means 'taking and giving' and itself implies the obligation of exchange.
In Pakistani communities, the receiver will write a note of what they were given so they can return a similar gift. However, the returned gift must be
worth slightly more. The idea is not to close the debt, but to create a further one and continue the relationship; this is how a lena–dena is inherited.
Similar to a Kula partner, a lena–dena partner can be anybody in the Pakistani community that you wish to have a bond with, indeed even an English
woman that may have married into the family. As gifts are given on occasions such as birthdays, dinner parties etc, the gift exchange can occur over a
long period of time. Religious events, such as khatmi–Qur'an also calls for an occasion of lena–dena, as well as weddings, in which the bride's family
can expect all of their gifts to be in return of gifts given in lena–dena.
There is also an amount of prestige involved; the gifts received in a wedding are displayed in a ledger for guests to look through to indicate the
family's standing among its friends and

what to say. Don't get me wrong, I thought about things like shoes, even music, but it always felt like I didn't deserve it. Why should I ask for
something when I don't appreciate the gifts I receive on a daily basis? All the things that happen in a day that you don't notice, all those things you
overlook, are presents, so powerful, we don't deserve. All the people that you talk to today, may not be there tomorrow. Everyone says "anything can

Accepting Gifts From The Clients

Introduction
The receiving and giving gifts especially in health care is considered to be more ethically sensitive issue (Oak, 2005). Therefore, I decided to focus
on the issue of accepting gifts from the clients in the health services because I am a nurse by profession and I usually come across with this issue. In
my opinion, it is a debatable question that whether the professionals accept gifts or not and it is controversial. It varies from discipline to discipline and
person to person perspectives (Krassner, 2004). Webster 's Third New International Dictionary (Gove, 1993) defines agift as ... Show more content on

More than that, gifts can be modest such as a music CD or flowers or even more expensive items like piano. Therefore, appropriateness of the gifts
can be determined by their type, financial value, its timing, content, frequency, intention of the giver, insight of the receiver and its effect on the giver,
receiver or anyone else who may affected by the gift giving (Zur, 2007; Caddell & Hazelton, 2013 ). Gifts are common in the termination session,
and a gift at the early stage of therapy need more consideration (Zur, 2012). In my reading I have found that, there are three general categories of
gifts. First one, gift is considered as a tip to the professional who have a good personalized service in the restaurant or a health professional
providing care that is beyond the call of duty . Second one, gifts are given to address the perceived imbalance in the professional relationship. Third

Short Story The Gift Of The Magi
Think about the last time that you opened a present that had been given to you by someone you love. Did you take a moment to think about what
they might have gone through just to give you that one perfect gift? In the short story "The Gift of the Magi", by O. Henry, the couple, Mr. and Mrs.
Dillingham Young sacrificed their most prized possessions for one another. They did this in order to buy each other nice Christmas presents. Della's
most prized possession was her beautiful hair that she cut off and sold for the money. JimВ№s was his gold watch which he also sold so that he
could buy Della a gift. Della and Jim both sold their favorite things to buy each other something special. Della bought Jim a platinum chain for his
watch. Jim bought Della tortoise shell clips for her hair. Since both had given up their most prized possessions for each other, the gifts were worthless,
but very special in their eyes. In this short story the author presents a wonderful example of a true love story. It paints a picture of how true love should
be and the sacrifices required to have a relationship like these two people had. The author O. Henry tells the story of this couple from a narrator's
point of view. The narrator of the short story is the spectator of the events that are occurring between the couple. The author of this story chose to not
uncover in words the sentiments between the couple. The words be that as it may, are spoken in the couple's activities. The love between

Marcel Mauss's 'Indian Gift'
Gift giving, particularly during the holidays, is regular facet of our daily lives. Whether or not all gifts carry the obligation of reciprocity is
characterized by the gift's cultural context. The Gift: The Form and the Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies, (1925) Marcel Mauss' ethnographic
book, presents the necessity of reciprocation through analysing the gift giving practices of the Maori and the Kwakiutl. Jonathan Parry revisits Mauss'
theory in his essay, "The Gift, the Indian Gift and the 'Indian Gift'," (1986) addressing its connection as well as contradiction to the Hindu law of gift
giving. Ultimately, Mauss and Parry propose differing perspectives on the obligation to reciprocate when given a gift. Their opposing conclusions...

The obligation to reciprocate is based on the belief that the recipient receives and possesses something that belongs to the donor (Mauss 1925: 17). In
reciprocating a gift, Mauss explains that the receiver balances and restores the hau of the first gift to its origin (Mauss 1925: 15–17). Moreover, the
potlatch, the North American Indian practice of exchanging gifts competitively, is characterized by themes of rivalry and destruction, requiring one to
reciprocate or risk losing authority (Mauss 1925: 11–12). In Northeast Siberia and among the Eskimos of West Alaska, the exchange of gifts is imbued
with additional spiritual significance (Mauss 1925: 18–19). In destroying by sacrifice, as in the potlach, the people are fulfilling their obligations to the
gods, to whom they owe their use of the land (Mauss 1925: 20–21). Marcel Mauss asserts this exchange of gifts between the humans and the gods is a
necessary element of buying peace between them (Mauss 1925: 21). Mauss argues that reciprocation is a mandatory element of gift giving because of
the social contract that is formed by the first gift, which contains in it the donor's spirit (Mauss 1925: 14–21). We can see Mauss' theory at work today
in western society when we obligated to bring back gifts from a holiday for a friend who has already done the same for us. This pressure is the result
of the need to restore the balance in the social contract that Mauss

You should use this tab to see who has recently given and what prospects may be ready for a solicitation call. If prospects have given within the past
three months you should schedule a stewardship call to thank them for their support. By sorting these fields you can better approach your portfolio and
be more strategic with your calling.
For instance, if you sorted the last gift column and found all prospects who gave a gift in the last fiscal year (FY) but have not yet renewed in this FY
this could help you organize your time.

Missouri S&T can also obtain gifts through alumnus employee matching gifts. Under corporate matching gift programs, gifts made by a company's
eligible employees to a nonprofit organization (S&T) are matched with company or corporate foundation funds at a certain ratio. Many companies
match a gift while others double and even triple the amount in some cases.
To initiate the matching gift, a donor picks up the company's matching gift form from the personnel office or company website, completes it and sends
it along with his donation to Missouri S&T and we do the rest of the required paperwork.
Not all alumni work for a matching gift company, but you should always ask them if they do. They might be eligible to use their spouse's company

Personal Statement : Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual Gifts Spiritual gifts have been a topic of heated debate among a wide array of congregations and faith believers. Are these gifts just natural
everyday abilities or miraculous one's on par with what Jesus showed on earth? Scripture gives some insight into these questions but with the power
and flexibility of interpretation these answers are also obscured.
Before any external analyses and opinions are examined, spiritual gifts should be explained in its original context of Scripture. When looked through
the span of four specific New Testament Bible passages, spiritual gifts are given key distinctions. First of all, spiritual gifts are endowed by the Holy
Spirit as it is stated in 1 Corinthians 8–10:
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the
same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits,
to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
By the Spirit, we are able to use these gifts and it is this same Spirit that moved the disciples after Jesus ascended to Heaven.
Also, spiritual gifts are graces endowed for the purpose of building up the body of Christ, or what is the church as it is stipulated in 1 Corinthians
14:12: "So it is with

Literary Analysis of 'The Gift of the Magi'
Literary Analysis of The Gift of the Magi The twists and turns of the plot as it unfolds within O. Henry 's "The Gift of the Magi" are what simply
captivate the reader in such a short amount of pages. The story of Jim and Della on a cold Christmas Eve at the turn of 20th century America is
centered around what is remarkably relevant to what many readers have experienced in their own lives; the inevitable stresses, sacrifices, and joys of
the holiday season. Strapped for cash and wanting to give her beloved husband the most luxurious gift for Christmas to express her deep passion for
him, we are immediately introduced to the initial situation at hand. With only a dollar and some change to spend on Jim, Della is forced into a situation

The conclusion to this story is the narrator 's final paragraphs were he relates the couple to the Magi and praises Jim and Della of being the wisest
givers of all, contrary to popular belief. The comparison O. Henry makes between the story of Jim and Della and that of the Magi is rather relevant
as the Magi were the ones who are credited with being the origins of the "giving nature" of the Christmas season. In this story, we see a man and a
woman so blinded by love that they are willing to make ultimate sacrifices for the happiness of the other. Similar to the Magi, Della and Tim put each
other before themselves and through their generosity and considerable lengths they both went to achieve that generosity is something more admirable
than any materialistic gift they could ever offer each other, thus making the uselessness of their gifts irrelevant. This story is a story that can touch any
person that has had to gone through a heavy sacrifice or gave up something they so covet in order to enlighten someone else, especially during the
holiday seasons. It is a short narrative that magnifies the intangible value of sentimentality and belittles the importance of physical offerings. Jim and
Della equally appreciate the efforts each other made to make the other happy, despite

What Are America's Gifts To My Generation
America's Gift To My Generation
America has offered us many things to be proud of. But often times, we fail, and only look at the simplest things. We think of our freedoms; speech,
religion, press. But while those are our valuable gifts, we forget to look inside of those gifts, to find something more meaningful. This essay is about
my generation's gift, but also everybody else's gift, unique in it's own time. It is believable, that over the past 241 years, that the greatest gift, that
shows up stronger in every generation, is the spirit of us, a spirit 'We the people'. In recent events, we may forget that we are one, but I know, that we
are, hand–in–hand. We founded this nation amidst a complication and confusion of divided colonies, but linking arms and gritting our... Show more

we forget what united us in events like the World Wars. We forgot that every man, every woman, and even children were fighting to bring about
success, and sacrificed, everything, together. Do we even care to remember the Revolutionary War, which is the reason why I am writing this, for
you to read? We omit the gory details from history, that actual ones that brought us home, home to a new nation. America sometimes fails to realize
that in order to be united, it is acceptable to mess up, as long as we are determined to learn from it. The Civil War might've been a mistake,
something that never should have happened, because we should have been treating everyone the equally in the first place. America's mistake, the
people's mistake, I admit it. But a learning process, all the same. So here we are. Too blinded to see the greatest gift to our nation, that has always
been one of the best blessing ever bestowed upon us. Will we be the generation that wakes up and sees it for what it is, and

Major Gifts Essay
Securing major gifts is important to almost every organization (Hodge, n.d., p.1). These gifts assist organizations in ensuring the success of both annual
and capital campaigns (Hodge, n.d., p.1). They not only account for most of the donation to a campaign, but they can also serve as a lead gift, which
gets other people interested in donating to the cause. Without major gifts, organizations would be doomed, therefore organizations need to ensure that
they have the staff, resources, and training in place to allow for successful solicitations.

After a lot of preparation and practice, I will no longer need the script, and I will be able to approach the solicitation with confidence.
To enhance my confidence even further, having a relationship with the potential benefactor would be ideal. At this stage in the relationship, most of
my shyness will no longer be evident, as I would know the potential benefactor very well. After gaining an adequate level of confidence and comfort to
be able to successfully solicit the major gift I would arrange a meeting with the potential benefactor.
In setting up the meeting, I would be sure to express that the purpose of the meeting is for us to, "invite their philanthropic support for an important
organizational project" (Hodge, n.d., p.12). Also, the ideal meeting location would either the home of the potential benefactor or the donor's place of
business, whichever potential benefactor is more comfortable with (Hodge, n.d., p.12).
At the meeting, we will begin with casual conversation as a way to show our interest in the potential benefactor, but to also calm some of my nerves.
After a bit of conversation, we will introduce the reason for the meeting (Dove, n.d., p.11). First, we will clearly explain the project and the benefits that
their support will provide our clients, along with some of our personal stories/commitments that highlight our passion for the cause (Hodge, n.d., p. 13).

The two tales focus on gratitude. The two tales are about the importance of giving to others and showing appreciation for the gifts received.
The tale entitled "The Gift And The Giver" is based on giving a gift to others with nothing in return. In this tale, there is a farmer that grows an apple
with perfect color, shape, and shine. The farmer decides to give this precious apple to the king. In the text, it states, that the king was surprised by the
feeling he got when he heard that the farmer didn't want anything in return. But there was a rich merchant that wanted a gift from the king, so he offered
the king his best horse. Then the king gave the merchant the apple. This shows the reader, that the merchant was disappointed and that the

What Makes Gift Exchange?
Schieffelin describes gift exchange as a 'rhetorical gesture in social communication', it can be used as a method of solidifying, integrating and defining
social relationships through the non–market exchange of goods, it is a social, cultural and economic experience. This ritual creates a respectful bond
between both the giver and receiver. Previously gift exchange was considered more of a cultural tradition and religious practice, however contemporary
gift exchange does not commemorate the rituals' heritage to the same extent, it just creates an emotional hierarchy. This emotional hierarchy signifies
power within a relationship and the expectation of the recipient to reciprocate, in other words; 'I give so that you can give in return' ... Show more

One of Days research participants, Olivia, experienced this when one of her most prominent clients gave her 'a small gift instead of a proper
payment' (Day, 2007). This greatly benefitted the client as he got sexual favours in return. However, Olivia who like a great proportion of sex
workers got into the industry to fund studies/invest, found this exchange disadvantageous as the gift was invaluable to her. This proves that there is
no such thing as free gift as the donee is forced to requite even if the gift received in the first place was unwanted. This phenomenon is explained
further in Komter & Volleberghs journal, expectation gifts are for more distant relationships where there is a mutual understanding that all parties
involved must reciprocate. Expectation gifts are reserved for less affectionate relations, 'pure gifts' are set aside for those we are affectionate towards,
(shown further on figure2: feelings underlying kinship and social relations in Western societies). We chose to give those close to us gifts to ensure
that relations do not decay, especially friends as friends are not as permanent as family in most cases. Mauss states that 'if friends make gifts, gifts
make friends' (Mauss, 1967). This shows how valuable gifts are and cannot be taken for granted, you could even argue that this means that without an

Marketing On Christmas Gift Exchange And Asymmetrical...
This paper looks at the gift giving tradition between the Natives and the Europeans. Carlos and Lewis's "Marketing in the Land of Hudson Bay"
article explains in great detail the strategies used by the Hudson Bay Company to develop a trading relationship with the Natives, as well as the trends
in trading. The article also elucidates that in order to understand its customer's culture and demands, the Hudson Bay Company participated in Native
traditions one of which was to present gifts to Native traders before the actual trading. As the importance of this tradition is emphasized in the article
as well as the data presented, this paper aims to explore the influence of receiving gifts on trade between the two parties. Gift exchange is a common
practice among many countries and many professions. The economists look at gifts as an incentive to increase productivity. This theory is tested and
proved in the following two articles.
The article "Regarding gifts–on Christmas gift exchange and asymmetrical business relations" by Jeannette Lemmergaard, and Sara Louise Muhr,
focuses on the impression the company gifts can make on the business partners during Christmas. The authors argue that corporate gift exchange
between business partners at Christmas is an attempt to build personal relationships, as a gift represents social and cultural value than just the economic
value. The article extensively investigates the regard and obligation phenomenon, which is explained in the article as:

The Gift Of The Magi Short Story Analysis
Throughout our lives there are things and people that each of us hold dear to our hearts. Things and people we love and treasure above all, but
sometimes we let the pressures from society dictate to us what the standards of a happy life is, and we forget what is really important. In the story
"The Gift of the Magi," O. Henry reminds us the nature of true wealth, true generosity , and true love. In "The Gift of the Magi" we meet Della and Jim
Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to buy each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York
City apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of over 600 short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime,
and was first published in a New York newspaper in 1905. Henry started writing short stories while in prison for embezzlement as a way to support
his daughter. Ironically, the story does not seem to reflect Henry's luck with love and relationships. After years of fighting alcoholism, mental
illness, and financial problems, Henry died in of cirrhosis of the liver in 1910 (imdb.com). One of the points made is that Jim and Della have the
gift of true love. We see Della's love for Jim by what motives her to want to buy a nice gift. She did not want it to empress the neighbors, or to out
give Jim. She simply wanted "Something fine and rare and sterling–something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honour of being owned by
Jim." We also see

Theme In O. Henry's The Gift Of The Magi
Theme in "The Gift of the Magi" "Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest."(Henry 108). This is one of the quotes from O.
Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi." "The Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is short about two adults making a sacrifice for one another. "The
Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is about sacrificing something for someone else which is revealed by the author's irony, descriptive language, and
dialogue. In this story, "The Gift of the Magi," the author uses different situations throughout the story to show irony. "For there lay the combs– the set
of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped for long in a Broadway window."(108). In these words, the author is describing what Della had
wanted for a very long time, but no longer has her long hair. This represents irony because Della sold her hair to buy the watch chain for Jim and now
he no longer has the watch and Della is left with eighty–one cents. The story also states," I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And
now suppose you put the chops on."(108). Briefly, the author shows that Jim has given up his most valuable possession for someone he loved. This
shows irony because now Della has no hair for the combs and Jim has no watch for his new watch chain. They are both left with two useless items.
According to the author, the text also says,"And here i have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most
unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house."(108). In this quote, the author is directly stating how irony is used in the story.
This is showing how the two people sacrificed something for each other but ended up both items being useless because they gave up the things the
items were useful to. Given these points, the author uses irony to demonstrate problems throughout the story in different situations.
During the story the author also uses descriptive language to show some of the events and main issues throughout the story. According to the
text,"'Will you buy my hair?' asked Della.'I buy hair,' said Madame.'Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it.' Down rippled the brown
cascade.'Twenty dollars,' said

The Powerful Gifts Of The Holy Spirit
The adversary causes plenty of division within the church over many issues. One debate in particular is the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Fortunately, it's not the argument of whether or not the charismatic spiritual gifts were part of the first century. However, the major issue at hand is
whether or not the charismatic spiritual gifts are still used in today's church, or not? There are many beliefs of charismatic gifts, based off
denominational sectors, church affiliations, personal experiences, and last but not least interpretation or should I say misinterpretation of the
Scriptures. Many believers of Christ believe that the charismatic gifts cease after the Bible was established, and at the end of the Apostolic age. This
group is better known as cessationists. In contrast, there are believers that believe that the charismatic gifts are prevalent, and available to believers
today. This group is better known as continuationists. This topic can really get out of hand on both sides of the debate. The one group that says they
have ceased, can be extreme by saying, "people who believe they have charismatic spiritual gifts they are demonic influenced". Then the opposing side
says, if you don't believe that the charismatic spiritual gifts are still in use, then you are not saved. In my personal opinion, theses agitators are totally
wrong. What is very interesting is that both views use the Scriptures to support what they believe. However, there is a middle

Sacrifice In The Gift Of The Magi By O. Henry
Stories of love and sacrifice abound in literature. Perhaps one of the most well known stories among teens and adults is the tale of a poor, young
couple struggling to find the perfect Christmas gifts for each other using their very limited means. They each manage to get what they think is the
perfect gift for the other, but only accomplish this by selling a prized possession which effectively makes the new gifts impractical. This bittersweet
narrative, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, illustrates the moral idea that a person, motivated by nothing but love for another, can possess a
willingness to give in a self–denying way which necessitates that the reader consider that wealth be measured by something more than having money ...

The Magi most likely came a long distance from Persia and sacrificed much to present their costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the child.
These gifts were esteemed not only because of their intrinsic value, such as the precious metal, gold, but also for their medicinal properties and were
traditionally given to a king as a gift of honor. The Magi, also known as wise men or kings, are just that, wise men. They know the value of
bringing the gifts to baby Jesus not because He needed gifts, but to show their devotion to Him. They brought these valuable gifts out of respect
and love for the new Savior. Love is a defining force for Della and Jim too, overshadowing the poor condition of their finances. Jim and Della do
not have much. They would most certainly be considered to be in the lower class, living in a little $8 a week flat in the city and going from a
sufficient income of $30 a week to a less than adequate $20 a week with Jim in need of a new overcoat and pair of gloves (Henry). Henry articulates
how their love for each other transforms their drab house and surroundings and gray circumstances into a warm and inviting refuge called home. "One
dollar and eighty–seven cents. That was all Della had," not nearly enough to get a gift worthy of her beloved Jim (Henry). She desires nothing but to
please him and considers him worthy of something

The Gift Of The Magi
The Gift of The Magi
The short story (The Gift of The Magi) was written by O. Henry. O Henry full name William Sydney porter, he wrote many short stories and one of
his best–known stories is (The Gift of The Magi). The story is about a woman named Della who saves up for to buy her husband Jim to buy him a
Christmas gift. She saves up and on Christmas day she has one dollar and eighty–seven cents to buy Jim a gift. she sells her hair and gets 20 dollars for
it and buys Jim a gold watch chain for his nice gold watch he owns that has been passed down from generation to generation. Jim sold his watch to
get Della the chair combs she loved. In the end the all loved one another and didn't care about the gifts. In the story (The Gift of The Magi) one
literary theme is imagery they use biblical, visual, and tactile imagery. In the story (The Gift of the Magi) there is three times when Biblical
imagery is used." If a queen had lived in the rooms near theirs, Della would have washed and dried her hair where the queen could see it. Della
knew her hair was more beautiful than any queen's jewels and gifts."(Henry 2). This is a line from the story is saying that the Queen Sheba would
be jealous of Della's hair. Queen Sheba is a queen from the Bible. "if I king had lived in the same house with all his riches, Jim would have looked at
his watch every time they met. Jim knew that no king had anything so valuable."(henry 3–4). Again, here (The Gift of The Magi) this shows that

A Biblical Study of Spiritual Gift of Tongues Essay
Continuists argue that the spiritual gift of tongues still continue today. To understand this fully, we need to remind ourselves of the primary purpose of
the spiritual gifts and the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues. Donald W. Burdick refutes the argument of the cessationists using I Corinthians 13:8.
According to him, "we must notice, however, that this verse does not say that tongues were to cease at the end of the apostolic age." However, he also
concluded that healings, tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, and other gifts which may have been objectively miraculous in nature fade not
due to the sagging spiritual life of the church as claimed by the Pentecostals, but because they have fulfilled their purpose.
Argument 3: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There, the people are willingly giving their lives away for the Gospel – enduring beatings and hardships, imprisonments and poverty. The Church in
these places is more like the Church in Smyrna [Rev 2:8], where believers suffered and died for the faith. It is surely unjust to class them with the
Laodicean church. What is true that during every age, the Seven Churches provide examples and warnings to the Body of Christ as types of
faithfulness and failure.
Conclusion
Spiritual gift of tongue is surely an interesting topic. A thorough study of this topic must be explored by the church to understand fully its biblical
meaning, purpose, characteristics, regulations, and life. Each believer of the church must understand this doctrine so that they will be armed in battle
or spiritual warfare. This gift was given to the church by the God through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the birth of the church, to validate the apostles
as the messengers of God, with God's message. It is also verified by various sources cited above that the glossolalia, or the tongue speaking meant by
Paul in his epistles were literal language known to man, a foreign language that may not be known to the speaker that's why an interpreter who has the
gift of interpretation has to be present each time it happens to interpret the utterances, thus, this is not a result of ecstatic utterance or in a trance. The

Ethnology Of Marcel Mauss 'The Gift'
The Power of Giving Marcel Mauss' ethnology The Gift was originally published in 1925. In this ethnology, Mauss aimed to answer the question "In
primitive or archaic types of society what is the principle whereby the gift received has to be repaid? What force is there in the thing given which
compels the recipient to make a return?"(1) He successfully answered this through extensive research by comparing cultures in Polynesia, Melanesia,
and North West America. He found that the structure ofgift giving included power entitlement more from the giver than the receiver. The Gift was a
good ethnology because of the adequate comparison of cultures, the structure of the evidence provided, and the ability of the reader to compare gift

One common theme was potlatch. According to the online dictionary, a potlatch is a "ceremonial feast where possessions are destroyed or given
away to display wealth or enhance prestige".(source) This was shown to exist in multiple cultures. This knowledge made it known to the reader that
gift giving comes along with prestations. There are certain obligations and expectations that come along with gift giving, and it is typically the
prestations that are most important. One important prestation is the formation of relationships, as these events typically focus on groups rather than
individuals. Mauss even stated "For it is groups, and not individuals, which carry on exchange, make contracts, and are bound by obligations". (3)
He showed the importance of relationships over material gifts and how they affected several people at once. Another common prestation that was
considered important was the purity of the gift. Mauss stated, "Another theme plays its part in the economy and morality of the gift: that of the gift
made to men in the sight of gods or nature." (12) The people of the discussed cultures did believe each gift had its own personality. That is why it
was a typical act for the donor to receive acceptance and approval from the gods before giving a gift. It is through the understanding of these two
themes, that the readers are more able to understand the complex way in which other cultures exchange gifts. These two ideas were able to be applied
to all of the cultures discussed when analyzed on a deeper

Symbolism In The Gift Of The Magi

  • 1. Symbolism In The Gift Of The Magi Did you know that some people don't exchange gifts during Christmas? The reason for that is because people don't have enough money to buy one or because they hate each other. Did you also know that people who exchange gifts are known as the magi? The magi person that are very wise. O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi," uses symbolism and irony, such as Della cutting her hair to get money so she could buy a gold watch chain for Jim and Jim selling his watch to buy Della a comb with jewels, to reveal the theme of wisdom. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We see irony throughout the story. We see this whenever Della runs to the hair articles shop to see how much Mrs. Sofronie would buy her hair for. Mrs. Sofronie said "Twenty dollars." Della responded by saying, "Give it to me quick." Della was proud of her hair and you could consider it to be her prized possession. She cut the thing she loved the most about herself because she was determined to find a gift for Jim. She wanted to give Jim a gift that would enjoy and be pleased with. At last, she found the gift for him, she thought that "It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. The gift was a gold watch chain for Jim's prized possession, the gold watch that his father gave him. The watch chain's value "was in its rich and pure material. Because it was so plain and simple, you knew that it was very valuable. All goods things are like this." Della knew in her mind that "It was good enough for the watch." Later, Della held the watch chain in her hand waiting on Jim to come in. When he walked into the house, he was shocked to see that Della's hair was gone. Later, he said "I want you to understand me, Dell, nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less. But if you'll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in." He threw something tied in paper on the table. Della pulled off the paper and cried tears of joy. It was a comb with jewels that Della saw in a shop window and loved for a long ... • 2. Mauss Gift-Exchange From Gifts to Commodities: An Introduction to the Anthropology of Exchange Introduction Marcel Mauss suggested that there exist two distinct types of exchange in human societies: gift–exchange and commodity–exchange. He also classified societies based on the dominant type of exchange in their economic system. For instance, small–scale, traditional societies are associated with gift economy, whereas Western societies are associated with commodity economy. Mauss' distinction between the two types of exchange was widely accepted in mainstream social anthropology, yet some scholars have suggested that the mutually exclusive contrast between gifts and commodities exchange is unjustified (Rus, 2008), that is, commodity–exchange does indeed contain elements that are traditionally attributed to gift–exchange. This essay will explore the major differences between the two types of exchange based on Mauss' theory on reciprocity, and demonstrate with examples the presence of 'hybrid' form of exchange in capitalist societies. Functions of gift–exchange and commodity–exchange Gift–exchange and commodity–exchange serve different purposes and functions in the society. (1954, p.13) Another function of gift–exchange in many preindustrial societies is to re–distribute resources among the communities. During the Potlatch festival in the Pacific Northwest coast in Canada and North America, rich people give away their wealth and possessions to other individuals of the same community. However, they do not receive material presents in return but recognition, prestige and status from the rest of the community. • 4. Brief Summary Of The Book 'The Gift' By Mauss In the book 'The gift', Mauss demonstrates how in all societies, individuals should have the rights and freedom to choose whether they want to give gifts, however, he notices that giving gifts are compulsory in most societies. Mauss speaks about a study that explains how giving gifts is done as a whole rather than between individuals. The gifts were not only materialistic such as possessions and prosperity but through festivities and events such as rituals and dances. These type of gifts resemble peace, respect, and honor. Mauss describes this as a 'system of total services' which indicates that the gifts represented are beneficial to the whole society through reciprocation. In this book, Mauss explains the diversity of gift giving in different tribes of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, another form of gift giving is the kula trade which is seen as a prestige and a honorable trade held in reserve for the chiefs only in the tribe. When gifts are given to chiefs, it needs to be passed on from chief to chief after a specific period of time. Mauss explains different types of terms for different gift giving. One of the many terms he mentions, the term 'kudu' which means that a gift must be given and must be reciprocated at an equal value. The three important rules that need to be followed in a Potlatch is to give, to accept and receive, and to reciprocate. If any of the rules are broken, a punishment comes along with it in a form of slavery. Mauss speaks as well about different religions and cultures and about their gift giving. He explains in the law of Hindu that the gift given to an individual is beneficial to their present life and in their next life. Through Mauss's observations, he has realized that not everything is surrounded around the idea of business and selling, it is more than that. There is no denying the recipients enjoy great pleasure when receiving the gift. Gift giving is an important part of our lives, we have manifested holidays or specific days designed as excuses to fork out hard earn money for mostly inoperable items such as deep fryers or ties. Scholars believe that as an activity, gift–giving plays as highly important role in the economic surplus and the consumer goods industry of countries around the world and deserves to be understood (Cheal 1998). Interesting this study was conducted in 1994 through to 2001, a period in which technological advancements such as mobile phones and the Internet were almost readily available global. Charles Piot's ethological study explores the hierarchies of value and the economy to the Kabre people. Furthermore, discusses the surplus of the gifting and the reciprocation of the moral economy. The author describes the economy from the perspective of the people of Kabre as an almost shared community. As the author lived in this community he describes through his residency how he lived and adapted by figuring out how this system works. Residents will spend half of cash brought in to surplus into gift giving in anticipation of reciprocation. The author also found that gifts such as meat and beer were accepted, however sometimes failed to understand what gifts were appropriate. In one instance, gifted uncooked meat, which was a sign of disrespect, as the meat was not treated in the traditional ways. Lee Cronk Indian Gift Giving Analysis Jesse Paner Anthropology through Film 2/25/17 In his article, Reciprocity and the Power of Giving, Lee Cronk discusses the different cultural meanings placed upon the act of gift giving. The act of exchanging of gifts has many unique implications, which are based on the culture of the giver and the recipient. Cronk discusses the idea of reciprocity, which is the expectance of exchange associated with gift giving. Cronk brings up the example of "Indian Gifts" which was a term that white settlers connected to the Native American people's expectation of receiving an equivalent gift after being given one. This expectation is rooted into the culture of the Native American people, which was misunderstood by the settlers. The real implication of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather than observing the action, it is important to observe the motives behind the act. By understanding the emotions of the actor, we are then able to gain a greater understanding of the act and the culture that influenced the actor. While reading this article I couldn't help but reflect on my own experiences in gift giving. I love giving gifts, for a long time I tried so hard to give my closest friends the best gifts possible. Not only would I try to give them an object or trinket that they wanted, I would also try to make the experience of opening the gift as memorable as possible. I would make gift boxes that were filled with balloons or boxes that would shoot confetti once opened. I did all this because I thought I was doing it for my friends but after reelecting about it, I realized that I did it for my own benefit. I did all of these elaborate gifts with the intention of making myself seem artistic and amazing in my friends eyes. This correlates to what Cronk wrote about in this article because it shows that no act is done without an expectance of reciprocity. • 7. The Gift of Fear "The Gift Of Fear," a psychology book written by Gavin De Becker, is an extremely useful and informative read. It gives valuable advice about how to act upon human intuition, how to recognize threats, and defines what real fear is and it's purpose. I found the book to be extremely interesting. This book provided me with a sense of understanding on violence and fear and I feel much better prepared when it comes to recognizing dangerous situations. My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when a stranger is a potential threat. This was fascinating to me because I've been told since I was just a little boy to beware of strangers. But with all these warnings about strangers I had never been told how to recognize when a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When a person gets that "gut feeling" that something just isn't right, it should never be ignored. Our natural human intuition is giving us that "gut feeling" for a reason. And that sensation of danger can save lives. One example of how human intuition works was given in the book; a man walked into a convenience store, had a gut feeling he needed to get out of there, left, and found out later that day the convenience store had been robbed and the cashier had been shot and killed. This seemingly random feeling of danger that spared this mans life was not random at all. His intuition let him know to have fear because the cashier looked as if he was fearful when the man walked into the store and also there was a second nervous looking customer wearing a long concealing jacket while it was hot outside. His intuition let him know that there was a potentially dangerous situation even if he wasn't looking for the signs that were there. This applies to my life because everybody can experience these "gut feelings" from human intuition; I know now to act upon them and to never ignore them because they have the capability to save your life. One thing I learned about fear is that it can basically act for us. With fear humans can make critical decisions that they wouldn't dare make without fear edging them on. Charismatic gifts are wisdom, knowledge, faith, gift of healing, performance of miracles, prophecy, ability to differentiate spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. These gifts are stated in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is working in each of us and gives us gifts to do the ministry that God has called us to. "But evangelical Christians are divided on the issue of whether charismatic gifts are for today and should be practiced today." There are two sides to this debate. On one side is the continuationist view and on the other side is the cessationist view. The question being asked is "Were these gifts intended by God to be used throughout the entire church age until the Lord returns?" The continuationists

That is our inheritance." Whenever people think of someone as gifted they tend to think of superpower type qualities. The Chosen, a book written by Chaim Potok, depicts several different characters pertaining different talents. Characters such as Reuven, Danny, or even Mr. Malter all possess abilities that help them in life. The types of gifts displayed in the book are not what people usually think of as special gifts, but a special talent can seem as little as forgiving easily and genuinely caring for others well–being or as big as recalling information at a moments notice. In The Chosen, characters such as Reuven, Danny, and Mr. Malter all demonstrate certain gifts that they maintain. To begin with, Reuven Malter demonstrates many of his different types of gifts throughout the story. Two of the key traits Reuven reveals are the gifts of compassion and themind for logic. In the beginning of the book Danny tries to kill Reuven by hitting him with a baseball, however, he later comes and apologizes to him and Reuven forgives him (Potok, 70). Not everyone, when provided with a chance, will forgive someone who wronged them. Instead pf clinging onto his resentments Reuven graciously forgives Danny, an act that requires great compassion to fulfill. Potted plants usually work better – they require little maintenance, last a long time and symbolize hope and peace (Peace Lilies for example). 3. Make a donation in the name of the departed. In my sister's case, when her son died, we ended up making a donation to a nonprofit that collects the playful drawings of school children and delivers them to the elderly, shut–in, and infirm. We did this to try to share the love he brought into the world with others less fortunate, even though he was gone. 4. The flow of gifts and commodities between individuals is a significant aspect of our society as a whole. In Pakistani communities, the receiver will write a note of what they were given so they can return a similar gift. However, the returned gift must be worth slightly more. Whether or not all gifts carry the obligation of reciprocity is characterized by the gift's cultural context. The Gift: The Form and the Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies, (1925) Marcel Mauss' ethnographic book, presents the necessity of reciprocation through analysing the gift giving practices of the Maori and the Kwakiutl. Jonathan Parry revisits Mauss' theory in his essay, "The Gift, the Indian Gift and the 'Indian Gift'," (1986) addressing its connection as well as contradiction to the Hindu law of gift giving. The obligation to reciprocate is based on the belief that the recipient receives and possesses something that belongs to the donor (Mauss 1925: 17). In reciprocating a gift, Mauss explains that the receiver balances and restores the hau of the first gift to its origin (Mauss 1925: 15–17). Moreover, the potlatch, the North American Indian practice of exchanging gifts competitively, is characterized by themes of rivalry and destruction, requiring one to reciprocate or risk losing authority (Mauss 1925: 11–12). In Northeast Siberia and among the Eskimos of West Alaska, the exchange of gifts is imbued with additional spiritual significance (Mauss 1925: 18–19). In destroying by sacrifice, as in the potlach, the people are fulfilling their obligations to the gods, to whom they owe their use of the land (Mauss 1925: 20–21). Marcel Mauss asserts this exchange of gifts between the humans and the gods is a necessary element of buying peace between them (Mauss 1925: 21). Mauss argues that reciprocation is a mandatory element of gift giving because of the social contract that is formed by the first gift, which contains in it the donor's spirit (Mauss 1925: 14–21). • 24. Personal Statement : Spiritual Gifts Joe Shun Chan Bae Professor Crump Religion 121 December 5th, 2014 Spiritual Gifts Spiritual gifts have been a topic of heated debate among a wide array of congregations and faith believers. Are these gifts just natural everyday abilities or miraculous one's on par with what Jesus showed on earth? Scripture gives some insight into these questions but with the power and flexibility of interpretation these answers are also obscured. Before any external analyses and opinions are examined, spiritual gifts should be explained in its original context of Scripture. When looked through the span of four specific New Testament Bible passages, spiritual gifts are given key distinctions. First of all, spiritual gifts are endowed by the Holy Spirit as it is stated in 1 Corinthians 8–10: To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. By the Spirit, we are able to use these gifts and it is this same Spirit that moved the disciples after Jesus ascended to Heaven. In this story, we see a man and a woman so blinded by love that they are willing to make ultimate sacrifices for the happiness of the other. Similar to the Magi, Della and Tim put each other before themselves and through their generosity and considerable lengths they both went to achieve that generosity is something more admirable than any materialistic gift they could ever offer each other, thus making the uselessness of their gifts irrelevant. Also, the ideal meeting location would either the home of the potential benefactor or the donor's place of business, whichever potential benefactor is more comfortable with (Hodge, n.d., p.12). At the meeting, we will begin with casual conversation as a way to show our interest in the potential benefactor, but to also calm some of my nerves. After a bit of conversation, we will introduce the reason for the meeting (Dove, n.d., p.11). First, we will clearly explain the project and the benefits that their support will provide our clients, along with some of our personal stories/commitments that highlight our passion for the cause (Hodge, n.d., p. 13). • 28. Similarities Between The Gift And The Giver The two tales focus on gratitude. The two tales are about the importance of giving to others and showing appreciation for the gifts received. The tale entitled "The Gift And The Giver" is based on giving a gift to others with nothing in return. In this tale, there is a farmer that grows an apple with perfect color, shape, and shine. The farmer decides to give this precious apple to the king. In the text, it states, that the king was surprised by the feeling he got when he heard that the farmer didn't want anything in return. But there was a rich merchant that wanted a gift from the king, so he offered the king his best horse. Then the king gave the merchant the apple. This shows the reader, that the merchant was disappointed and that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. What Makes Gift Exchange? Schieffelin describes gift exchange as a 'rhetorical gesture in social communication', it can be used as a method of solidifying, integrating and defining social relationships through the non–market exchange of goods, it is a social, cultural and economic experience. This ritual creates a respectful bond between both the giver and receiver. Previously gift exchange was considered more of a cultural tradition and religious practice, however contemporary gift exchange does not commemorate the rituals' heritage to the same extent, it just creates an emotional hierarchy. This emotional hierarchy signifies power within a relationship and the expectation of the recipient to reciprocate, in other words; 'I give so that you can give in return' ... One of Days research participants, Olivia, experienced this when one of her most prominent clients gave her 'a small gift instead of a proper payment' (Day, 2007). This greatly benefitted the client as he got sexual favours in return. However, Olivia who like a great proportion of sex workers got into the industry to fund studies/invest, found this exchange disadvantageous as the gift was invaluable to her. This proves that there is no such thing as free gift as the donee is forced to requite even if the gift received in the first place was unwanted. This phenomenon is explained further in Komter & Volleberghs journal, expectation gifts are for more distant relationships where there is a mutual understanding that all parties involved must reciprocate. Expectation gifts are reserved for less affectionate relations, 'pure gifts' are set aside for those we are affectionate towards, (shown further on figure2: feelings underlying kinship and social relations in Western societies). We chose to give those close to us gifts to ensure that relations do not decay, especially friends as friends are not as permanent as family in most cases. Mauss states that 'if friends make gifts, gifts make friends' (Mauss, 1967). This shows how valuable gifts are and cannot be taken for granted, you could even argue that this means that without an exchange such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Marketing On Christmas Gift Exchange And Asymmetrical... This paper looks at the gift giving tradition between the Natives and the Europeans. Carlos and Lewis's "Marketing in the Land of Hudson Bay" article explains in great detail the strategies used by the Hudson Bay Company to develop a trading relationship with the Natives, as well as the trends in trading. The article also elucidates that in order to understand its customer's culture and demands, the Hudson Bay Company participated in Native traditions one of which was to present gifts to Native traders before the actual trading. As the importance of this tradition is emphasized in the article as well as the data presented, this paper aims to explore the influence of receiving gifts on trade between the two parties. Gift exchange is a common practice among many countries and many professions. The economists look at gifts as an incentive to increase productivity. This theory is tested and proved in the following two articles. The article "Regarding gifts–on Christmas gift exchange and asymmetrical business relations" by Jeannette Lemmergaard, and Sara Louise Muhr, focuses on the impression the company gifts can make on the business partners during Christmas. The authors argue that corporate gift exchange between business partners at Christmas is an attempt to build personal relationships, as a gift represents social and cultural value than just the economic value. The article extensively investigates the regard and obligation phenomenon, which is explained in the article as: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Gift Of The Magi Short Story Analysis Throughout our lives there are things and people that each of us hold dear to our hearts. Things and people we love and treasure above all, but sometimes we let the pressures from society dictate to us what the standards of a happy life is, and we forget what is really important. In the story "The Gift of the Magi," O. Henry reminds us the nature of true wealth, true generosity , and true love. In "The Gift of the Magi" we meet Della and Jim Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to buy each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York City apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of over 600 short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime, and was first published in a New York newspaper in 1905. Henry started writing short stories while in prison for embezzlement as a way to support his daughter. Ironically, the story does not seem to reflect Henry's luck with love and relationships. After years of fighting alcoholism, mental illness, and financial problems, Henry died in of cirrhosis of the liver in 1910 (imdb.com). One of the points made is that Jim and Della have the gift of true love. We see Della's love for Jim by what motives her to want to buy a nice gift. She did not want it to empress the neighbors, or to out give Jim. She simply wanted "Something fine and rare and sterling–something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honour of being owned by Jim." We also see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Theme In O. Henry's The Gift Of The Magi Theme in "The Gift of the Magi" "Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest."(Henry 108). This is one of the quotes from O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi." "The Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is short about two adults making a sacrifice for one another. "The Gift of the Magi," by O. Henry, is about sacrificing something for someone else which is revealed by the author's irony, descriptive language, and dialogue. In this story, "The Gift of the Magi," the author uses different situations throughout the story to show irony. "For there lay the combs– the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped for long in a Broadway window."(108). In these words, the author is describing what Della had wanted for a very long time, but no longer has her long hair. This represents irony because Della sold her hair to buy the watch chain for Jim and now he no longer has the watch and Della is left with eighty–one cents. The story also states," I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."(108). Briefly, the author shows that Jim has given up his most valuable possession for someone he loved. This shows irony because now Della has no hair for the combs and Jim has no watch for his new watch chain. They are both left with two useless items. According to the author, the text also says,"And here i have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house."(108). In this quote, the author is directly stating how irony is used in the story. This is showing how the two people sacrificed something for each other but ended up both items being useless because they gave up the things the items were useful to. Given these points, the author uses irony to demonstrate problems throughout the story in different situations. During the story the author also uses descriptive language to show some of the events and main issues throughout the story. According to the text,"'Will you buy my hair?' asked Della.'I buy hair,' said Madame.'Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it.' Down rippled the brown cascade.'Twenty dollars,' said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Powerful Gifts Of The Holy Spirit The adversary causes plenty of division within the church over many issues. One debate in particular is the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit. Fortunately, it's not the argument of whether or not the charismatic spiritual gifts were part of the first century. However, the major issue at hand is whether or not the charismatic spiritual gifts are still used in today's church, or not? There are many beliefs of charismatic gifts, based off denominational sectors, church affiliations, personal experiences, and last but not least interpretation or should I say misinterpretation of the Scriptures. Many believers of Christ believe that the charismatic gifts cease after the Bible was established, and at the end of the Apostolic age. This group is better known as cessationists. In contrast, there are believers that believe that the charismatic gifts are prevalent, and available to believers today. This group is better known as continuationists. This topic can really get out of hand on both sides of the debate. The one group that says they have ceased, can be extreme by saying, "people who believe they have charismatic spiritual gifts they are demonic influenced". Then the opposing side says, if you don't believe that the charismatic spiritual gifts are still in use, then you are not saved. In my personal opinion, theses agitators are totally wrong. What is very interesting is that both views use the Scriptures to support what they believe. However, there is a middle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Sacrifice In The Gift Of The Magi By O. Henry Stories of love and sacrifice abound in literature. Perhaps one of the most well known stories among teens and adults is the tale of a poor, young couple struggling to find the perfect Christmas gifts for each other using their very limited means. They each manage to get what they think is the perfect gift for the other, but only accomplish this by selling a prized possession which effectively makes the new gifts impractical. This bittersweet narrative, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, illustrates the moral idea that a person, motivated by nothing but love for another, can possess a willingness to give in a self–denying way which necessitates that the reader consider that wealth be measured by something more than having money ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Magi most likely came a long distance from Persia and sacrificed much to present their costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the child. These gifts were esteemed not only because of their intrinsic value, such as the precious metal, gold, but also for their medicinal properties and were traditionally given to a king as a gift of honor. The Magi, also known as wise men or kings, are just that, wise men. They know the value of bringing the gifts to baby Jesus not because He needed gifts, but to show their devotion to Him. They brought these valuable gifts out of respect and love for the new Savior. Love is a defining force for Della and Jim too, overshadowing the poor condition of their finances. Jim and Della do not have much. They would most certainly be considered to be in the lower class, living in a little $8 a week flat in the city and going from a sufficient income of $30 a week to a less than adequate $20 a week with Jim in need of a new overcoat and pair of gloves (Henry). Henry articulates how their love for each other transforms their drab house and surroundings and gray circumstances into a warm and inviting refuge called home. "One dollar and eighty–seven cents. That was all Della had," not nearly enough to get a gift worthy of her beloved Jim (Henry). She desires nothing but to please him and considers him worthy of something ... O Henry full name William Sydney porter, he wrote many short stories and one of his best–known stories is (The Gift of The Magi). The story is about a woman named Della who saves up for to buy her husband Jim to buy him a Christmas gift. She saves up and on Christmas day she has one dollar and eighty–seven cents to buy Jim a gift. she sells her hair and gets 20 dollars for it and buys Jim a gold watch chain for his nice gold watch he owns that has been passed down from generation to generation. Jim sold his watch to get Della the chair combs she loved. In the end the all loved one another and didn't care about the gifts. In the story (The Gift of The Magi) one literary theme is imagery they use biblical, visual, and tactile imagery. In the story (The Gift of the Magi) there is three times when Biblical imagery is used." If a queen had lived in the rooms near theirs, Della would have washed and dried her hair where the queen could see it. Della knew her hair was more beautiful than any queen's jewels and gifts."(Henry 2). This is a line from the story is saying that the Queen Sheba would be jealous of Della's hair. Queen Sheba is a queen from the Bible. "if I king had lived in the same house with all his riches, Jim would have looked at his watch every time they met. Jim knew that no king had anything so valuable."(henry 3–4). Again, here (The Gift of The Magi) this shows that Biblical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. A Biblical Study of Spiritual Gift of Tongues Essay Continuists argue that the spiritual gift of tongues still continue today. To understand this fully, we need to remind ourselves of the primary purpose of the spiritual gifts and the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues. Donald W. Burdick refutes the argument of the cessationists using I Corinthians 13:8. According to him, "we must notice, however, that this verse does not say that tongues were to cease at the end of the apostolic age." However, he also concluded that healings, tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, and other gifts which may have been objectively miraculous in nature fade not due to the sagging spiritual life of the church as claimed by the Pentecostals, but because they have fulfilled their purpose. Argument 3: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There, the people are willingly giving their lives away for the Gospel – enduring beatings and hardships, imprisonments and poverty. The Church in these places is more like the Church in Smyrna [Rev 2:8], where believers suffered and died for the faith. It is surely unjust to class them with the Laodicean church. What is true that during every age, the Seven Churches provide examples and warnings to the Body of Christ as types of faithfulness and failure. Conclusion Spiritual gift of tongue is surely an interesting topic. A thorough study of this topic must be explored by the church to understand fully its biblical meaning, purpose, characteristics, regulations, and life. Each believer of the church must understand this doctrine so that they will be armed in battle or spiritual warfare. This gift was given to the church by the God through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the birth of the church, to validate the apostles as the messengers of God, with God's message. It is also verified by various sources cited above that the glossolalia, or the tongue speaking meant by Paul in his epistles were literal language known to man, a foreign language that may not be known to the speaker that's why an interpreter who has the gift of interpretation has to be present each time it happens to interpret the utterances, thus, this is not a result of ecstatic utterance or in a trance. • 39. Ethnology Of Marcel Mauss 'The Gift' The Power of Giving Marcel Mauss' ethnology The Gift was originally published in 1925. In this ethnology, Mauss aimed to answer the question "In primitive or archaic types of society what is the principle whereby the gift received has to be repaid? What force is there in the thing given which compels the recipient to make a return?"(1) He successfully answered this through extensive research by comparing cultures in Polynesia, Melanesia, and North West America. He found that the structure ofgift giving included power entitlement more from the giver than the receiver. According to the online dictionary, a potlatch is a "ceremonial feast where possessions are destroyed or given away to display wealth or enhance prestige".(source) This was shown to exist in multiple cultures. This knowledge made it known to the reader that gift giving comes along with prestations. There are certain obligations and expectations that come along with gift giving, and it is typically the prestations that are most important. One important prestation is the formation of relationships, as these events typically focus on groups rather than individuals. Mauss even stated "For it is groups, and not individuals, which carry on exchange, make contracts, and are bound by obligations". (3) He showed the importance of relationships over material gifts and how they affected several people at once. Another common prestation that was considered important was the purity of the gift. Mauss stated, "Another theme plays its part in the economy and morality of the gift: that of the gift made to men in the sight of gods or nature." (12) The people of the discussed cultures did believe each gift had its own personality. That is why it was a typical act for the donor to receive acceptance and approval from the gods before giving a gift. It is through the understanding of these two themes, that the readers are more able to understand the complex way in which other cultures exchange gifts.
