Managing Pit Bull Terriers Essay examples
Managing Pit Bull Terriers
Queensland premier, Peter Beattie says "having a Pit Bull Terrier is like having a loaded gun in your house," this is wrong. It is the bad owners of
these dogs that should be held accountable to the destructive behavior of these breeds. Nobody can deny that Pit Bull terriers don't have a bad
reputation but that doesn't mean the breed should be eliminated. It is the decent dogs of the breed that are being wrongly accused for the actions of
other dogs. This is how the Victorian dog laws in managing bit bull terriers are excessive.

In April 1997, the then premier Jeff Kennett had a proposal to tighten up Victoria's dog laws after a bull mastiff/ great Dane cross mauled a 12
year old boy to death. This was incident that was not caused by a Pit Bull Terrier, because of this the proposal never went ahead. In November,
2000, a seven year old Sunshine boy and his mother were attacked by a pack of seven Pit Bull Terrier cross dogs, after this the Bracks government
decided on new regulations about the responsibility of dog ownership. One of the legislations was that all Pit Bull Terriers and Pit Bull terrier
crosses will be designated 'dangerous' dogs and all because of other occurrences. Opponents of the new regulations claim that the 'dangerous dog'
designation should only be applied to dogs that have shown themselves to be a risk, not to the whole breed of dog. The vast majority of Pit Bull
Terriers are 'calm, reliable animals and that it is inappropriate to apply restrictions to every Pit Bull Terrier. Mr. Colin Muir, the president of the
American Pit Bull club, has stated, ' The entire breed of dog doesn't bite anybody, only individuals of the breed do.' Action against dangerous dogs
should be taken only on a 'deed, not a breed, basis'
Most people believe that pit bull terriers are a destructive breed, but it is the dire owners who are responsible and should not be permitted to own these

Pitbull Vs American Pit Bull Essay
Some breeds today can be so similar, it can be hard to tell them apart. A prime example of this can be the American Staffordshire terrier and the
American Pit Bull terrier. There are many similarities and differences to the American Staffordshire and American Pit Bull terriers. The breeds, in fact,
are so similar most are referred to as just "pit bull". Both the American Staffordshire and American Pit Bull belong to the same breed known as the
molosser group. The differences between the two are found in their body and head size, power and agility, and temperament. The similarities are found
in their history, lineage and popularity throughout the years. Dog fighting, also known as pit fighting, was not only legal but a popular activity among ...

Misconceptions About Pit Bull Terriers
Misconceptions about Pit Bull Terriers CM 220 Sean Jolley May 16, 2013 Kaplan University It is better to understand the breed and where they come
from before making assumptions about the type of animal they are. The Europeans wanted a stout muscular breed that had feistiness to it that they
could use for baiting or rat fights (pitbull411.com). Yes, it is true that the breed started off as a fighting dog that was used to bait bulls that were
uncontrollable by their owners. But when Europeans migrated to the United States they brought their dogs with them and the breed took on a new job.
Although in present times the breed has been adopted by gangs for the use of fighting other dogs for monies and the protection of their owners, the...

Staffordshire bull terrier that closely resembles the Pit Bull Terrier that was guilty of the attack (understand–a–bull.com). There is between 3,600,000

Boston Terrier Research Paper
The Boston Terrier is a lively and attractive American breed of dog. It is intelligent, trainable, and makes for a delightful companion who is always
ready for a walk or a playful game with its owners. However, achieving the desired markings can be a show aspirant's nightmare, and the females
frequently require a cesarean section when giving birth (whelping). These animals will not reach more than 25 pounds in weight.
Brief History: The Boston Terrier, sometimes called the "American Gentleman" can trace its ancestry from the mating of a crossbred Bulldog/terrier
called Judge, which was imported to the United States from the United Kingdom in 1865. In time the English and Staffordshire Bull Terrierwere added
to the mix through breeding.

The Battle Of Horse Fights Pit Bull Terriers
Aggressive and/or vicious dogs are beginning to be a serious problem in the United States. With the rise in dog fights Pit Bull Terriers are viewed in
a negative light. When the wrong owner gets a Pit Bull and withholds food and teaches the dog to fight it makes a very dangerous dog. Pit bulls are
known for their bite strength and fearless personalities. Due to all the negative media, abusive and neglectful pit bull owners; the pit bull terriers are
thought of as vicious and unsafe dogs to be around. Pit bull terriers are discriminated against due to a misconception of the breed itself.
The name pit bull is slang for American Pit Bull Terrier. There are several variations in the pit bull name. The name pit bull refers to several breeds
such as; American Pit Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, Boxer, American Bulldog, Bull Mastiff, Boxer, and American Staffordshire Terriers (Bixler 2 ).
In the early nineteenth century bull and terrier breeds were created in England, but were not recognized by the AKC until the nineteen thirties. The
once loved and admired breed is now feared and threatened in many areas. This once loved and adored breed is looked upon as a vicious killer. The
general vision of pit bulls are a large stalky frame, cropped ears and tail and with a large head.
The American Pit Bull Terriers were once known for taking care of young children. They are fiercely protective of their human family. The same breed
until the 1970's was known as America's family dog. The

disposition. Not to mention its tuxedo like coat. The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds that is truly "made in the America," " American Kennel
club rates the Boston Terrier as one of the most intelligent breeds"...
It is hard to believe that the gentle Boston Terrier that we see today was once bread for as a pit–fighting dog. It is very difficult to comprehend that these
friendly little dogs were once fierce pit fighters. Boston Terriers resembles the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which possesses a strong fighting instinct.

Weekly brushing is recommended, a rubber palm brush is what is recommended for their particular coat. The brushes I have found that work the best
are: rubber palm brush and grooming mit. Work the palm brush in a circular motion, this aids in removing lose hair.
Due to the breeds elongated palate they may snore. It is normal in the Boston Terriers may show some degree of airway obstruction. Another problem
in this breed, gas. A good diet, along with regular exercise, will keep this problem at bay.
Proper diet should always be considered a must with the Boston Terrier. To start as a puppy to adulthood, to old age. An improper diet as a rule will
lead to gas, and intestinal problems for the Boston Terrier. While a puppy the diet must be healthy in order for the dog to form a good bone structure,
and good muscle mass. Not to mention this is the time a dog will build a good immune system, to later ward off disease, and infections.
Health problems that the Boston Terrier has a predominance toward, juvenile cataracts, and hypothyroidism. As a rule juvenile cataracts can occur
between 8 weeks and 12 months. If hypothyroid disease occurs, it can be controlled by

Persuasive Essay On The American Bull Terrier
The American bull terrier is a loving breed perfect for family life. They love their families and children so much, however, that they need lots of
attention and don't do well when left alone for long stretches of time. It's hard to say no to their adorable oval faces, but you'll need to learn how if
you're going to keep your bull terrier out of trouble. Here are some characteristics of the breed you should know about if you're considering an adoption.
Size and Lifespan
With a lifespan of 12 to 14 years, bull terriers make excellent companions. Both males and females stand about 18 to 22 inches tall at maturity, with
males weighing in a bit heavier than females. Healthy males weigh between 55 and 65 pounds while females weigh between 45 and ... Show more

Though they are capable of learning and following several commands, they don't always feel the need to go along with your agenda. It's best to start
training this breed as early as you can so he gets used to doing things the way you want. Prepare yourself for a bit of a stubborn streak, however, and
some periodic mischief. First–time dog owners can do well with the breed but may want to consider some obedience classes.
Getting Along
If you're looking for a good guard dog, the American bull terrier is not the one for you. These love bugs are very affectionate with their owners and
are just as loving toward strangers. They get along great with children and tolerate cats but need proper socialization at an early age in order to play
well with other dogs. If you already have a dog, make sure you don't adopt a bull terrier unless and until the two dogs have met and decided to be
friends.
Exercise Requirements
Playful and energetic, bull terriers need daily walks and some time to romp. A big yard to run in is a plus but they can adapt to apartment living, but
only if they get daily walks and frequent visits to the dog park. Animal Planet's Dogs 101 program compares the breed to "a 3–year–old in a dog suit,"
so expect a fairly high energy level that will find trouble if not properly guided and

What Are Pitbulls Vicious Killer Dogs?
The Pit Bull, the world's most understood breed of dogs. I will be the first to admit I was skeptical about this breed of dog myself with the news
stories of how a Pit Bull attacked a child or mauled their owner to death. The stereotypes didn't help either, for example, pit bulls have locking
jaws, that they bite and shake like an alligator. But like anything do not believe everything you read. Are pit bulls vicious killer dogs? The short
answer is no not at all. Victoria Wilcher was only 3 years old at the time when her grandfather's three pit bulls attacked her. Now half her face in
paralyzed and lost the use of one of her eyes. According to research by Merritt Clifton, the editor of Animals 24–7, an animal–news organization, "Pit

Do Pit Bulls Make Good Pets? Essay
"If somebody is too stupid to understand the fundamental immorality of dog fighting, you're never going to be able to explain it to him" (Kevin
Hench). Most people think that pit bulls have locking jaws. This is false however; no dog breed in the whole world has locking jaws. Dogs are
not always aggressive how they are raised and trained determines the behavior of a dog. Dogs have tendencies to be aggressive only if not trained
properly. The discrimination against pit bulls is wrong and uncalled for. Pit bulls are not the only culprits of attacks and death to humans. Dog
fighting and stray pits are the fault of the people who own them. It is man kind's job to take care of and be responsible for their dogs. Why should the

The main reason pit bulls attack is because they are mentally unstable, a mixed breed and show overbearing traits, or because they are mistreated by
their owners. The public must understand that the three "pit bull breeds were bred for dog fighting and bear and bull–baiting" (PBRC). On the other
hand, they were also kept as "nanny dogs" and used for herding cattle. "Pit bulls are ideal for therapy work because of their pleasant nature" (PBRC).
These are three of the most stable breeds known to man. They have a very high temperament test score, 86% as of 2010, a lot higher than most breeds.
"The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the top 5 most stable breeds in the country" (PBRC). Anyone can see that this is an excellent breed of dog.
There are a few things that people should know though. "Pit bulls have a lower Tolerance to dogs, but with any breed, a dog's tolerance changes as
they mature" (PBRC). "Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds" (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their
history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back
down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive.
These breeds are only for experienced or past dog owners. Anyone who wants to own a pit bull or any breed of dog is encouraged to do some research
beforehand. Every breed has their positives and negatives.

Pit Bull Stereotypes
Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Well, I have a
dream that all dogs will be judged by their integrity and not by their outward appearance. Unfortunately, pit bulls have suffered for many years because
people continue to believe the faulty stereotype that all pit bulls are aggressive. The truth is many individuals aren't informed about pit bulls. Many
people believe the pit bull is a specific dog, but the pit bull describes different dogs including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire

Pit bulls are amazing family additions, and they are truly loving and protective. According to researchers at the Institute for Animal Welfare and
Behavior pit bulls are harmless. The test results of 415 dogs were analyzed. The test consisted of a veterinary examination; a learning test; situations of
dog–human, dog–environment, and dog–dog contact; and obedience. Escalation in aggressive behavior was scored using a scale of 1–7. The results
show no indication of dangerousness in specific breeds, so pit bulls are just as innocent as the common golden retriever (Schalke et al. 97–103).
Another study by a Georgia–based group called the American Temperament Test Society has put twenty
–five thousand dogs through a ten–part
standardized drill designed to assess a dog's stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness in the company of people. A handler takes a dog on a
six–foot lead and judges its reaction to stimuli such as gunshots, an umbrella opening, and a weirdly dressed stranger approaching in a threatening way.
Eighty–four per cent of the pit bulls that have been given the test have passed, which ranks pit bulls ahead of beagles, Airedales, bearded collies, and
all but one variety of dachshund (Gladwell 26–28). Studies have proven that pit bulls are loving, friendly pets if they are treated right. My sister's two

Breed Specific Legislation
Breed Specific Legislation refers to a law or set of regulations applicable to certain types of dog breeds. The law forbids the possession of certain
dogs believed as dangerous to both the owner and the general public (Walden). BSL allows punishment of innocent animals while owners never fault,
giving the specific breed a bad name. According to the American Kennel Club Web site, an appellate court in Ohio ruled BSL as unconstitutional. The
court found no proof that the pit bull breeds seem more of a risk verses other breeds of dogs (American Kennel Club). This paper gives a synopsis
that abolishment of the Breed Specific Legislation, especially regarding pit bulls, ought to take place due to unethical and biased reasons. The three

As a matter of fact, hunting dogs and other sport dogs, including pit bulls, display animal aggression. No correlation between animal aggression and
human aggression exists. Most dogs that live in at a shelter or safe house go through temperament testing. A mandatory series of temperament testing
shows the dog's level of aggression. Certified therapy or rescue dogs take required temperament testing, and this option exists for any pet dog. Of all
tested pit bulls, they pass at a higher rate than the dog population in general (Hiding Truth). In Janis Bradley's 2014 revised book, Dog Bites: Problems
and Solutions, she states the issues behind the cases of pit bull attacks, "The most comprehensive study of dog bite–related fatalities to date covered all
256 incidents that occurred between 2000 and 2009. The study reliably identified seven factors potentially within the control of dog caretakers that
co–occurred, in various combinations, in the overwhelming majority of the cases examined.14 It is based on investigative techniques not previously
employed in dog bite–related fatality studies, which had relied primarily on media reports.15,16 This current study utilized sources more complete,
verifiable and accurate than media reports. The researchers identified a co–occurrence of multiple, controllable factors: no able–bodied person being
present to intervene (87.1 percent); the victim having no familiar relationship with the dog(s) (85.2 percent); failure to neuter/spay the dog(s) (84.4

The truth to this is yes pit bulls can be this way, but only if raised to be aggressive or not raised or trained correctly. Pit Bulls just like any dog they
are good, friendly, and great pets. I think this stereotype is like any other stereotype it is true to some degree, but there is a background reason why.
Whether people choose to believe it or not be their own opinion. People shouldn't punish this dog because of what other dogs have done in the past,
which they were taught to do. I think it all comes down to opinion and personal preference, some people do not like the look of a pit bull and some do.
They have a distinct look and some think that because that look mean and tough that it will reflect in their personality. Which is completely not true.

Racial profiling had existed since biblical times, and is still present in today's society. Recently in history we had the tragic terrorist attacks on
September 11, 2001. It did not take long for the fear of anyone from the Middle East to ripple through America. Wearing a turban in public would get
people falsely accused of being a violent terrorist. Over and over again people foolishly stereotype and judge individuals based on their race or
appearance. One of the most recent victims of profiling is the pit bull. Simply looking like or being a pit bull gets many loving creatures falsely
accused of being violent, uncontrollable monsters. Pit bulls are the major target of legislation that bans or restricts certain types of dogs based solely ...

When BSL is enacted in a community it gives the citizens a false sense of security. They believe that all the "dangerous" dogs are done away with.
Breed–specific laws have a tendency to compromise rather than enhance public safety. When limited animal control resources are used to regulate or
ban a certain breed of dog, without regard to behavior, the focus is shifted away from routine, effective enforcement of laws that have the best chance
of making our communities safer: dog license laws, leash laws, animal fighting laws, anti–tethering laws, laws facilitating spaying and neutering and
laws that require all owners to control their dogs, regardless of breed.
BSL fails at make communities safer from dog bites and attacks. There has been no conclusive data that even suggest that BSL has prevented dog bites
or attacks. An Australian study conducted in 2006 entitled,Breed–specific Legislation and the Pit Bull Terrier: Are the laws justified?, concluded that
the data collected in the United States to support the theory that pit bulls posed a unique danger to the public is flawed by methodological
shortcomings (Breed). What this means is that the statistics of dog bites in the U.S. are inaccurate and flawed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

Pit Bulls: Nature Or Nurture
When the headlines come across about dog bites, people often wonder if they'll be the next victim. Certain dog breeds have the stigma of being
aggressive. Pit Bulls are in this group but they are falsely criticized. These dogs are not what they are a made out to be and a a lot of the belief and
myth surrounding them are not true at all . While public opinion varies widely on the stigma of certain breeds of animals such as Pit Bulls, these

It is often found that if Pit Bulls are put into bad situations, then that may be reflected on how a dog reacts to its environment. Pit Bulls were
original a cross breed between Bulldog and Terrier. This combination made a dog that was agile and strong. Due to Pit Bulls having these favored
characteristics, these dogs were often used as hunting dogs, as well as for illegal dog fighting. Because of this, people believe that the nature of
these dogs is to be aggressive and bite (Liz 18). The statistics show pit bulls as dogs that may be dangerous but often they don't show different
factors that may affect the dog's behaviors ("Dog bite prevention" 1733). Many things may lead to a higher chance of aggression, like whether the
dog has been spayed or neutered, if it was abused, if it lived in bad living conditions, if its sole purpose was to fight, etc ("Position Statement"). The
ASPCA argues, "In Prince George's County, Maryland, where Pit Bull Terriers are banned, the Animal Management Division reports that 80
percent of the approximately 500 to 600 animals seized and killed by animal control every year under the ban are "nice, family dogs"'(qtd. In

The Misconceptions Of Pit Bulls And Pitbulls
The Bullied Bullies When people think of loyal dogs with a friendly demeanor, puppy–like face, and a wagging tail, they typically would imagine a
Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever. However, out of these people, many of them would not expect a Pit Bull to fit into the same categories.
Pit bulls are the most bred dogs in America, and yet, "one million Pit Bulls are euthanized every year," and "only one in 600 Pit Bulls born will ever
find a loving home" ("Pit Bulls and Euthanasia Rates"). This is a result of misconceptions about Pit Bulls that millions of people today still believe. A
widely believed misconception about the term "Pit Bull" is that it is an actual dog breed. However, this is false, and it is simply a category for different
dog breeds with similar characteristics, such as the American Staffordshire, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, theStaffordshire Bull Terrier,
the American Bulldog, and any mixes between these breeds. These breeds all came from the breeding of English Terriers and English Bulldogs to
obtain desired sizes and characteristics. Most Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are "strong, powerful dogs with broad, brick–like heads and muscular
bodies" ("About Dog Breeds: Pit Bull") and have a large variety of different fur colors. Because of their strength and loyalty, Pit Bulls have been
taken advantage of by people who use them for fighting and money; when dog fighting rings are broken up, usually word spreads and causes many

Informative Essay On Pit Bull Terrier
From the small South Asian wolf to the large Newfoundland of North Eastern Canada, dogs have been man's best friend for approximately 10,000
years ("Domestic Dogs", National Geographic). As man has evolved and changed, so has their canine companion. About 340 dog breeds have been
recognized by the FГ©dГ©ration Cynologique Internationale, the world governing of dog breeds (Malina, "The Incredible Explosion of Dog
Breeds"). However, man has not treated all of these breeds as their best friend, sometimes going so far as to abuse dogs simply because of their
specific breed, such as, the pit bull which is actually an umbrella term used for dogs like the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire
Terrier, Bull Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Due to their history of participating in bull baiting and ratting, where the dogs were bred to
attack, people have labeled them as aggressive dogs and believe that no matter the dog, it will be dangerous simply because of its breed. However, just
like humans, the temperament of the dog depends on how it was raised. With ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This dog was used originally for boar hunting and as a general companion and guard, but became popular with the sport of bull baiting since they

objective was to have a dog seize a bull by the nose, its most tender part which rendered it helpless when hurt, and to not let go, eventually bringing the
bull down (Marien–de Luca, "Bull Baiting"). In 1885, bull baiting became illegal in England so people looked toward new entertainment in ratting
and dog fighting which led the bulldog to be bred with terriers to become smaller and even more agile, leading the to the Pit Bull Terrier breed

Informative Essay: Pitbulls Should Be Banned
Pit Bull Bans
Pit bulls have a bad name because of events that have occurred in the past. This bad reputation is provoking pit bull bans all over the states. "In
recent years, the breed has been unfairly villainized as overly aggressive and dangerous" (Morral). We are not giving the dogs enough credit for being
such great companions. Pit bulls are being judged for many of things; their past, recent activities, all of the dog fighting. "Despite their gallant history,
pit bulls faced an uphill battle in gaining official recognition" (Morral). In reality pit bull bans are not necessary anywhere.
The history plays a big role in pit bull bans, this history leaves the dogs with an awful reputation in today's world. In the past pit bulls had one major
role, dog fighting. "Some terriers were used for dog fighting before such contests were generally banned as cruel ("Dogs" pg. 266). "The
bull–and–terrier, more commonly known as the first pit bull terrier a muscular, canine gladiator bred specifically for combat with other dogs ("Dogs"

different jobs than those for which they were originally developed" ("The Truth about Pit Bulls"). The only way a pit bull would be a fighting dog

The fighting alone is abuse, but the prepping for the fight itself is even more horrifying. Pit Bulls spend their lives in a small cage cooped up in filthy
conditions. Trainers add weights to the Pit Bulls chain to strengthen the dogs upper body. The Pit Bulls are beaten and starved to increase their
aggressiveness. Trainers force the Pit Bull to kill cats or rabbits as form of training to practice for the real deal. After fifteen months of training, the Pit
Bull will participate in a "roll" where the Pit Bull fights another for ten minutes to test and seeif the dog is worth the trainers time anymore. If not, the
dog is neglected or killed (Silverman 4). This a prime example that people are the problem, not the breed. Some may argue that the American Pit Bull
Terrier was bred to fight and attack people; however, it is the trainers who abuse and neglect the breed to make the breed trust no one. Through proper
training from a professional trainer, the Pit Bull attacks would go down.
The final road of a Pit Bull in most cities that ban them is the pound. Roughly 75% of shelters euthanize Pit Bulls once they are in their custody because
that's the law in that particular city (Leavitt). Euthanizing is when a drug is administered through the bloodstream of an animal to stop its heart

These are just a few of the many ways that American Pit Bull Terriers are loyal to their owners as well as considered heroes among many people.
When you mention the words Pit Bull, many times people immediately begin talking about the statistics of them attacking other people as well as other
dogs. A survey was conducted in 2009 of attack percentages of Pit Bulls compared to other breeds such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Chows.
Among this survey, the Pit Bull breed scored the lowest with a 0.00125 and the highest being the Rottweiler with a score of 0.00433 (https:/
/defendpitbulls.com/pit–bull–attack–statistics/). On the website Dogsbite.org, it states that Pit–Bulls are the leading culprit in dog attacks, this is just a
broad statistic which does not adequately explain whether these attacks were of dogs which were used in illegal dog fighting rings or whether they
were just your average house pet. Many times when surveys are conducted dealing with dog temperaments and aggressiveness, Pit Bulls are the main
breed that is done incorrectly. I say this because a Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but a label given by the Breed Specific Legislation, BLU, to
describe many breeds such as: the American Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier,Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier,
and Mini Bull Terrier. How does anyone know what the percentage of the real American Pit Bull

Man's Best Friend the Pit Bull
Man's Best Friend
Dogs have been a companion for humans throughout history. There are currently 161 breeds which are recognized by the American Kennel Club
(AKC) registry (Why Purebred?, 2013). Add the total of mix breeds and the number of dogs the ASPCA rescues daily, and there are a countless
number of dogs in the United States. Unfortunately, since dogs do not have the ability to speak, they use their mouths and paws to communicate. Dog
bites happen. According to the ASPCA, there are approximately 4.7 million dog bites estimated every year (Dog Bites, 2013). Based on these
estimates alone, dog bites raise public health and public safety issues in many cities across the country.
The "Pit Bull"

The term "Pit Bull" is a generalization of many similar breeds. The AKC registers the most common breed of "Pitt Bull" as the American Staffordshire
Terrier. Without researching the breed, some assume the name from the UKC, which is an international registry, which registers American Bull
Terriers. Some refer to them as cousins, and some disagree on their classification as the same breed. The Staffordshire Bull Terrierwas originally bred
"in the nineteenth century when coal miner in Staffordshire, England, wanted a small, fast dog" (AKC, 2013). Using the original Bulldog and a small

First off, Pit bull is not one certain breed but a group of different breeds which includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, American

Also another test done by the Journal of Forensic Science showed that "vicious dog owners reported significantly higher criminal thinking, entitlement,
sentimentality and super–optimism tendencies. Vicious dog owners were arrested, engaged in physical fights, and used drugs significantly more than

In conclusion I feel like an efficient solution to the abuse of Pit bulls is to perform background checks on people trying to adopt "vicious" dogs.
And also have someone vouch for them to prove that they are not adopting the dog for wrongful situations. Pit Bulls can be as loving as any other

There are many misconceptions about the canine breed "pitbull." Though believe it or not, there is no such thing. Typically, there are around three to
five different breeds that are considered pitbulls. The American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American
Bulldog, and the Bull Terrier are the breeds that are considered pitbulls (Alvarado. 2016). The Staffordshire Bull Terriers' biological background will be
the highlight of this research. Specifically, their taxonomic group, characteristics of the species, developmental process, behavior, and some diseases
that can/will affect the animal. Many things can be reconsidered after obtaining information about this uncertain animal.
The first category that will be explained is the taxonomic group. Canines are listed under the family Canidae, which includes only dog–like mammals.
For example, coyotes, foxes, wolves, and jackals. Going further down the taxonomic scale, there is the genus Canis. The Canis is specific to canines,
while the species Canis lupus only includes wolves and family dogs. Finally, the subspecies Canis Lupus Familiaris, particularly family dogs, which
includes multiple breeds, all with their own characteristics and traits ("Levels of classification," n.d.). There are many characteristics of the Canis

Managing Pit Bulls and Breed Stereotypes

  • 1. Managing Pit Bull Terriers Essay examples Managing Pit Bull Terriers Queensland premier, Peter Beattie says "having a Pit Bull Terrier is like having a loaded gun in your house," this is wrong. It is the bad owners of these dogs that should be held accountable to the destructive behavior of these breeds. Nobody can deny that Pit Bull terriers don't have a bad reputation but that doesn't mean the breed should be eliminated. It is the decent dogs of the breed that are being wrongly accused for the actions of other dogs. This is how the Victorian dog laws in managing bit bull terriers are excessive. Just because pit bull terriers have a bad reputation, doesn't mean that the breed should be eliminated. There is a law that pit bulls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In April 1997, the then premier Jeff Kennett had a proposal to tighten up Victoria's dog laws after a bull mastiff/ great Dane cross mauled a 12 year old boy to death. This was incident that was not caused by a Pit Bull Terrier, because of this the proposal never went ahead. In November, 2000, a seven year old Sunshine boy and his mother were attacked by a pack of seven Pit Bull Terrier cross dogs, after this the Bracks government decided on new regulations about the responsibility of dog ownership. One of the legislations was that all Pit Bull Terriers and Pit Bull terrier crosses will be designated 'dangerous' dogs and all because of other occurrences. Opponents of the new regulations claim that the 'dangerous dog' designation should only be applied to dogs that have shown themselves to be a risk, not to the whole breed of dog. The vast majority of Pit Bull Terriers are 'calm, reliable animals and that it is inappropriate to apply restrictions to every Pit Bull Terrier. Mr. Colin Muir, the president of the American Pit Bull club, has stated, ' The entire breed of dog doesn't bite anybody, only individuals of the breed do.' Action against dangerous dogs should be taken only on a 'deed, not a breed, basis' Most people believe that pit bull terriers are a destructive breed, but it is the dire owners who are responsible and should not be permitted to own these ... Misconceptions About Pit Bull Terriers Misconceptions about Pit Bull Terriers CM 220 Sean Jolley May 16, 2013 Kaplan University It is better to understand the breed and where they come from before making assumptions about the type of animal they are. The Europeans wanted a stout muscular breed that had feistiness to it that they could use for baiting or rat fights (pitbull411.com). Yes, it is true that the breed started off as a fighting dog that was used to bait bulls that were uncontrollable by their owners. But when Europeans migrated to the United States they brought their dogs with them and the breed took on a new job. So why does the media exploit the Pit Bull? That is an easy answer, because the breed gets blamed for dog attacks even when it is another breed that was actually responsible for the attack. In several instances the Pit Bull Terrier was blamed for an attack when it was actually an American Staffordshire terrier or a Staffordshire bull terrier that closely resembles the Pit Bull Terrier that was guilty of the attack (understand–a–bull.com). With the rise in dog fights Pit Bull Terriers are viewed in a negative light. When the wrong owner gets a Pit Bull and withholds food and teaches the dog to fight it makes a very dangerous dog. Pit bulls are known for their bite strength and fearless personalities. Due to all the negative media, abusive and neglectful pit bull owners; the pit bull terriers are thought of as vicious and unsafe dogs to be around. Weekly brushing is recommended, a rubber palm brush is what is recommended for their particular coat. The brushes I have found that work the best are: rubber palm brush and grooming mit. Work the palm brush in a circular motion, this aids in removing lose hair. Due to the breeds elongated palate they may snore. It is normal in the Boston Terriers may show some degree of airway obstruction. Another problem in this breed, gas. A good diet, along with regular exercise, will keep this problem at bay. Proper diet should always be considered a must with the Boston Terrier. To start as a puppy to adulthood, to old age. An improper diet as a rule will lead to gas, and intestinal problems for the Boston Terrier. While a puppy the diet must be healthy in order for the dog to form a good bone structure, and good muscle mass. • 8. Persuasive Essay On The American Bull Terrier The American bull terrier is a loving breed perfect for family life. They love their families and children so much, however, that they need lots of attention and don't do well when left alone for long stretches of time. It's hard to say no to their adorable oval faces, but you'll need to learn how if you're going to keep your bull terrier out of trouble. Here are some characteristics of the breed you should know about if you're considering an adoption. Size and Lifespan With a lifespan of 12 to 14 years, bull terriers make excellent companions. Though they are capable of learning and following several commands, they don't always feel the need to go along with your agenda. It's best to start training this breed as early as you can so he gets used to doing things the way you want. Prepare yourself for a bit of a stubborn streak, however, and some periodic mischief. First–time dog owners can do well with the breed but may want to consider some obedience classes. Getting Along If you're looking for a good guard dog, the American bull terrier is not the one for you. These love bugs are very affectionate with their owners and are just as loving toward strangers. They get along great with children and tolerate cats but need proper socialization at an early age in order to play well with other dogs. If you already have a dog, make sure you don't adopt a bull terrier unless and until the two dogs have met and decided to be friends. Exercise Requirements Playful and energetic, bull terriers need daily walks and some time to romp. A big yard to run in is a plus but they can adapt to apartment living, but only if they get daily walks and frequent visits to the dog park. Animal Planet's Dogs 101 program compares the breed to "a 3–year–old in a dog suit," so expect a fairly high energy level that will find trouble if not properly guided and

"Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds" (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive. These breeds are only for experienced or past dog owners. The results show no indication of dangerousness in specific breeds, so pit bulls are just as innocent as the common golden retriever (Schalke et al. 97–103). Another study by a Georgia–based group called the American Temperament Test Society has put twenty –five thousand dogs through a ten–part standardized drill designed to assess a dog's stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness in the company of people. Pit Bulls spend their lives in a small cage cooped up in filthy conditions. Trainers add weights to the Pit Bulls chain to strengthen the dogs upper body. The Pit Bulls are beaten and starved to increase their aggressiveness. Trainers force the Pit Bull to kill cats or rabbits as form of training to practice for the real deal. After fifteen months of training, the Pit Bull will participate in a "roll" where the Pit Bull fights another for ten minutes to test and seeif the dog is worth the trainers time anymore. If not, the dog is neglected or killed (Silverman 4). This a prime example that people are the problem, not the breed. Some may argue that the American Pit Bull Terrier was bred to fight and attack people; however, it is the trainers who abuse and neglect the breed to make the breed trust no one. Through proper training from a professional trainer, the Pit Bull attacks would go down. The final road of a Pit Bull in most cities that ban them is the pound. When you mention the words Pit Bull, many times people immediately begin talking about the statistics of them attacking other people as well as other dogs. A survey was conducted in 2009 of attack percentages of Pit Bulls compared to other breeds such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Chows. Among this survey, the Pit Bull breed scored the lowest with a 0.00125 and the highest being the Rottweiler with a score of 0.00433 (https:/ /defendpitbulls.com/pit–bull–attack–statistics/). On the website Dogsbite.org, it states that Pit–Bulls are the leading culprit in dog attacks, this is just a broad statistic which does not adequately explain whether these attacks were of dogs which were used in illegal dog fighting rings or whether they were just your average house pet. Many times when surveys are conducted dealing with dog temperaments and aggressiveness, Pit Bulls are the main breed that is done incorrectly. There are currently 161 breeds which are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) registry (Why Purebred?, 2013). Add the total of mix breeds and the number of dogs the ASPCA rescues daily, and there are a countless number of dogs in the United States. Unfortunately, since dogs do not have the ability to speak, they use their mouths and paws to communicate. Dog bites happen. According to the ASPCA, there are approximately 4.7 million dog bites estimated every year (Dog Bites, 2013). Based on these estimates alone, dog bites raise public health and public safety issues in many cities across the country. The "Pit Bull" Breed The term "Pit Bull" is a generalization of many similar breeds. The AKC registers the most common breed of "Pitt Bull" as the American Staffordshire Terrier. Without researching the breed, some assume the name from the UKC, which is an international registry, which registers American Bull Terriers. Some refer to them as cousins, and some disagree on their classification as the same breed. The Staffordshire Bull Terrierwas originally bred "in the nineteenth century when coal miner in Staffordshire, England, wanted a small, fast dog" (AKC, 2013). A temperament test is a test to see how dogs react to certain situations which can be from threatening to non–threatening. First off, Pit bull is not one certain breed but a group of different breeds which includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and lastly the Staffordshire Terrier. So let's stick to the American Pit Bull as it is the most popular amongst Pit bulls. But no matter which breed I choose the results don't change, no breed is a bad breed, there are only bad owners.
