Abstract: Through dialog, I wish to write about cultural experiences which are original illustration of social
conditions faced in society. Examples of poetry will exhibit schemes as they are described from personal life
experiences. If one person read my poem and like it, this would serve the purpose of being a poet. Writing poetry is
my passion.

                                       Author’s Vision Statement

I am a civil rights activist. I believe in democracy where the people help elect officials who will
determine their outcome. A democracy run government allows the people to mitigate principles
that will affect the community. I am a cultural activist. I believe in humanism type government.
A humanist government is determined by social aspects that affect running the government. A
humanist type government governs the people.A republic type government the people elects
officials who will enforce laws of propaganda that will help focus groups.A Marxist society the
power is mandated by the government and the military power. All decisions from the
government are dictated by a ruler or anarchist government.I am a modernist who believes that
religion has to have a part in controlling the government influenced by the morals of society or
faith. An anarchist believes in anti-Semitist society where the government fate is determined by
demeaning antics to get what is necessary to run things their way.Women have been in the
government for years.

As a result of my research, I will adapt empathy towards cultural identity. I will enhance in
providing helpful solutions to why we have problems in our community. I will be able to create a
resource of data that can be used as a model to dictate society’s social norm. I will be able to
write an affective paper on cultural awareness. I may be able to reach out to others on issues they
do not normally talk about and understand so they can find solutions to their own communities. I
will develop a plan of resources that can be used in changing society by providing helpful
information to solve their problems. I would want others to understand that we have problems in
society that are often disregarded as hopeless and are ignored. We can change the whole
dichotomy of how racism affects the community. I can create awareness of social conventions of
the twentieth century. Think about change; think about hope think about the youth. The youth are
an important part of the community of leaders that will make changes in society in the near
future. It was the youth that protested during the civil rights era. Making change is the
responsibility of all Americans and of all adults.

Too many of us reflect on democracy as an outlet to resolve social issues in the community. It
may reflect on environmental issues or solve social issues within a community. It is important to
recognize the importance of the community at large. These issues may reflect finding jobs for the
unemployed, making projects within a jurisdiction of the community, providing the education
Love written by, Angela Brown

needed in the workforce to train students how to become a productive citizen within the
community. This may mean to help women protect their rights against rape or abortion. It may
mean to resolve social issues where black men are being harassed by police officers, beaten and
killed like Traven Martin case. It may reflect on racism to determine why women are paid less
than men. It may change the dictum of why there are more black women and men in prison. It
may determine to change the outcome to becoming responsible adults and raising their kids in
two parent homes. It may determine the outcome of racism in the classroom where blacks are
still being graded lower than any other race where there work is not good enough to pass and the
reason why they drop out of school at an early stage in their lives to turn to committing crimes.

I am a poet. I have been writing poems for over 20 years. Writing is my passion. When I write, it
becomes therapy for me. I write about social issues faced in society today. I write about the
problems I encountered as an African American female in the twenty first century. I write about
hope and spirituality. I believe that everyone can be their best if they meditate and kept their faith
in God. I believe the most important aspect in life is to help others solve problems. It is important
for us as a people to make the most out of life. The only way we can become true achievers is by
helping others understand their own faults and find effective solutions to change. It is important
in my writing journal to write how I reflect to social issues in society to help others understand
who they are and what they are dealing with in life. I would want to allow others to use insight to
radiate elements of hope or elements to change. I write about controversial issues faced in our
community. Writing poetry is my way of giving back to the community. It is a form of therapy to
release those positive tensions that counterparts in how society works. I hope to help others who
read my work to relate to what I write and to find comfort there is someone out there who feels
their pain, love and hope. If one person were to read my poem, and liked it, I would have served
the purpose of the reason that I write.

I was born in Meridian, Mississippi. I am a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. I have won awards for
my literature: Poet Scholar, Poet Fellow, Poet Ambassador and Poet of Merit. I have been
recognized for my poetry as: Poet Hall of Fame, Poet Laureate, and Who's Who in Poetry from
the Library of Poetry. I have won awards for my theatrical work from: Skyfest, The National
Black Theatre Association, Hollywood, and Fade on Line. I was given two book awards for
poetry from Writer's Digest. I have published over 3 books of poetry.

I would receive amiable contributor to the world of literature. I would become an effective
advocate to change democracy. I would be an advocate to policy change. I would help the
community with insightful dialog and hope within cultures. I would create cultural awareness of
all people to note there is hope and there are solutions that will help everyone.

As I began writing, I was reminded how hope, love and spirituality has touched my life.
My poems are a reflection on life experiences. My poems speak about traditional social
conditions face in society today. One must discover the significance of our identity to aluminate
our past and reflect on the present. Poetry is the root of hope. It is the heart of the street where
ideas become cultural experiences. Poetry is a symbol of optimism share by tradition. My poems
are a vision in progress…

God Has Smiled on Me

Chorus
God has smiled on me,
He has set me free.
God has smiled on me;
He's been good to me.

Verse 1
He is the source of all my joy,
He fills me with His love.
Everything that I need,
He sends it down from above.

Verse 2
alights unto my path is He,
Without Him I would fall.
I don't know what He is to you,
But to me He's my all and all.

Gymnastics Olympia

Hooray for Gabby, with so much physique

A true visionary of great intent

Who leaped high toward victory

With a unique routine that could beat
Love written by, Angela Brown

Engineered all odds with twist vault turns

Tumbling on to achieve world gold

Her passion foretold with utmost class

Energy and finesse, the dignity she expressed

As she made her mark in Olympic history

A world all-around gold athlete is born

Being Born Black

When God made man black

He gave man the gift of courage

He gave man the gift of strength

He gave man the gift to lead

He gave man the gift of endurance

God made man black for a reason

To glow with the moon and

To shine with the sun

Black Fate

I often reflect on history

I am reminded of where I stand

I am told I am not equal
Love written by, Angela Brown

That my skin is inferior

God gave me strength, yet,

I am incapable of sustaining life riches

History determines our fate

Black like Me

I am as black as the ocean

Pure as air Gentle as a rose

Soft as grass

I am as Smooth as sand

Perky as a wild thorn

Powerful as the sun

Hip Hop Bird

His feathers were grey

His beak was black

He would flap his wings

He would bounce his body

He would whistle to the beat

In harmony to African music

And I swore he had black in him

Songstress

When we have forgotten our youth,

Our glory fades in all reason.

We have forgotten our dreams,

We lost reason to remind us who we are.

When we have lost all hope,

We remember how her voice would carry

And how her words created peace in our hearts.

Granma

She lived in honesty, as was loved by many

She left with good intentions, a blessing bestowed

For her family, she left a legacy of strong visionaries,

A reflection upon her pride that left her mark to remember

We shall not forget she cared enough, a mercenary and a vigilant

Her soul reenacting love by so many touched by her heart

Sweet Love

Savor the nectar of my sweet breath with your lips
Sample the essence of my forbidden fruit with your tongue
Cradle the concave of my body structure
Rock gently my figure from behind
And listen for passion calling you

Love

For all thy beauty I am not worthy
Let our love be true the test of times
Love written by, Angela Brown

For what left to all are we left to prove?
Vixens desire passion trove
Virtue is in prism for goodness show
To defeat all reason love will grow
Gaze deep inside my heart
To see the sunshine over the bank
Natures call to fertility
As the planets move I dare not say
How fair love be fair game
All serenity will justify time
'Ah, I shall indulge tis apple, give me fruit.'

Mental Health

I feel comfortable within my skin
My fate is determined by my faith
I have love, security, food and drive
I only flaw I do not have
Is desire to not need

Choices

Longevity determines a choice
you may choose to elevate to go up or down
you may choose to move lateral at a sustaining pace
Find truth in which you speak
whatever direction you go, opens the door for others to follow

The Purpose

My Consent
the innocent too coo
when confronted with love;
to coo is the mating call for love.
As seasons change,
Time begins its journey.
When in matrimony,
Time locks its capsule to console
the love embedded within your hearts.
When united a good thing to remember is that
Laughter is the secret to serenity,
Hope is God’s promise to longevity,
Love written by, Angela Brown

Faith builds bridges of engagement,
and Trust is the foundation of friendship.
May God bless this union?

Motherhood
I am afraid of this inquisition I am in
I fear for delinquency of a child.

To be born into invasion
I cannot bore the fruit of acquisition.

To inherit the cruel world that lies ahead
I will not hold a child accountable for my deeds.

For the pain that stirs within innocence lies in fear
of a man’s race who challenges a black man’s will.

My Children
A child has a strong vision of the future
A glance at the moon filters light upon darkness
Bitter sweet temperament of hidden delicacies
Can shatter a child’s
dream

I can hear their vocation crawl into daylight
As death ears speak vein coral lies of innocence

Children rise to altercations
Speak out loud in full truths so
your voices can be
heard

Public Housing
In this building lies a fort
Full of roaches, rats and tall marching ants
Waiting to call this house their home

In this building block is a confinement
Contemptuous of creepy dark shadows striking its mate
Waiting to call this house a prison

In this building is a unit
A solitary confinement of sanitation
A safe house for prostitution, gang violence and drug use

All too familiar places, we call…
home
Love written by, Angela Brown

Mississippi
I always loved the place I called home
Where all my family gathered for a meal at great grandpa’s house
Great grandpa would bless the food
Where everything on the table was fresh from the garden
Freshly caught fish, fried green tomatoes, bread pudding
Could fill an empty child’s stomach with plenty
The elders spoke of good old times
Until night came and we all slept peacefully

Roots

They were brought south to find slavery
They found purges in the river where they were baptized
They travelled east to find bondage
They found beauty in dusky rivers at dawn
They travelled north to find freedom
The imagery in America’s salvation
They travelled west to find opportunity
They found a voice in the calm sea

Distance America

Africa so far away, where the Nile River parts its roots

a savanna oasis of desert plumes

America fills its belly with drums

to unmask the dark flames of night

Finding LOVE

My heart calls for your touch
As you grasp the palm of your hands
Around my small waist
To covet my stomach
That carries our child
My soul cries for you to whisper
Passionate sweet things in my ear
To hear you call my name in passion
In unison as you speak
To let me know you care for me
Love written by, Angela Brown

My virginity is a promissory note
An abiding promise
My virginity is a crossword
A loyal friendship
As I gap my legs open
And allow others to worship
God's intentions

History

Often I take the time to
Eminence feelings
On the things that matter most

Often I am reminded of
past accomplishments
That makes me proud

Often I reflect on wisdom
Voices from God

Often I dream of images
That celebrates my fate

I often fantasize
Your beautiful passion
Your kind heart

Often when I think of you
I surrender history

Independence

everything is perfect
in formality…
To each his own
who has his own...

Vegas Bikes

Imagine how we sported our bikes down Lance Street
With polished spokes as wheels spinned
As the chrome stood out balanced in the wind
Imagine the decor of red and white ribbons pom pomes
Love written by, Angela Brown

That decorated the handle bars
The plastic horn that beeped pedestrian warnings
That you have arrived
Imagine the sounds of a handmade engine wheels
Sung from the tongue of a card
Pinned from a clothes pin to the spoke
Humming, humming, humming
Imagine your wheel rider was bold red
Proclaiming your mark to the streets
That everyone fans acknowledged
As you performed tricks
One wheel and no hands
Gaping over the side walk to the street
In and out speeding through traffic
As you proclaimed your glory
In your hand made car, your bike
It and I a young road scavenger

Choices

Longevity determines a choice

You may choose to elevate to go up or down

You may choose to move lateral at a sustaining pace

No one can make you feel inferior unless you let them

Whatever direction you go, opens the door for others to follow

Cultivating Farm

Huge plow hands dig up earths rich soil

Hoes monuver back and forth to dig up holes

Seeds make way amongst the rigid crust

Water spreads amongst top soil

Sun and rain emerge while life emerges its

head to be born
Love written by, Angela Brown

Black Nature

At sunrise, dawn brings life peeking out from heaven’s trough

To the rooster who crows out to startle its glory to awake those fast asleep

To the baby birds who sing and dance troughout the course of day

To te flower buds that opens to drop its seed for all serenity to vale

To the ants that march under fields of the cool earth’s crust

To the tree that reaches out their branches to provide fruit to the hugry squirrel

To the black pond that offers fresh spring water in the garden of fertility

To the clouds that cover wide terrain beneath its bow creating love sputtered in rain

To the vast sky above pale blue masses for brightness of its horizen

Black nature will not be forgotten, for the beauty within, it dispels life’s rich imagery

Player

I thought I had a man. A BMW. Ooops;. But he fooled me into believing he was a good man. You see, I
was not good to myself. I was not true to myself when I trusted my body to be used for free, for good
conversation, for lust. I had been living a lie. I dreamt of the fairy tale wedding, having kids, a house, a
good car and good job if I met the perfect mate. I thought worldly on him but you see he played me with
his mind control act, that I believed it. I was his slut. You see, the player was a class act. He had it going
on. He was all that. When I thought I had him wrapped around me pinky, I turned out to be a freak
underneath the sheets. Brother had it going on. He was fine to me. He had a bank roll that he loved to
spend on me. His personality was smooth. His conversation was intellectual. He had class. If he asked
me to jump, I would say how high. For this man I was willing to go the distance. Sex was so good, I aint
lying, I thought he was the one. You see, each moment of ecstasy was a lie. I was fooled into believing
sex would make him special. Sex would make him all mine. Sex was the foundation of our relationship.
Sex would keep him coming back to me. I had to have it. It did not matter where I did it. We could have
sex in the jeep, sex at the crib, sex on the counter, sex at work, sex at school. I had an addiction to giving
this man what he wanted, wherever he wanted whenever he wanted it. He wanted it so much; sex was
the mind game we played. He tricked me into believing he needed me. He needed my loving as a token
of chastity. With that said, I found the truth about sex after each child. He left me bare foot and
pregnant year after year. That all those years of commitment, I was played. That I was a warm hole to
pee in. that I was the kick on the side with a concubine to raise alone, no but by his cousin or maybe he
said to give our child to his girlfriend or wife to raise. He said I was about nothing. I felt like nothing.
There are 3 sorts of women to a man, his loyal wife, his loyal friend and his loyal freak. I was the freak he
came too when his wife was not there to submit to him. Men are control freaks and if you are foolish
enough to believe it, you have been played. I thought I was good enough for him to come back to me. I
was a bag of tricks. Now all I speak of are commitments and having just one true love. All the men I
knew were like this. I did not ask to be a hutchie mamma playing tricks by a bunch of high rollers. I
wanted to be the innocent virgin who was respected and treated like an African queen. All I am saying is
do not make the same mistake sleeping from man to man, when you deserve better.

To My Unborn

Girl: Sorry I disrespected you. All the times I lived longing for your daddy to step up to the plate, longing
for your daddy to step up to the plate, longing for your daddy to step up to the plate to claim you.

Boy: For I did not know of our Godly creation .Our baby is our own salvation.
Love written by, Angela Brown

Girl: Instead I saved you from the agony and distress before you were born into poverty, abandonment
and denial. I protected you from neglect.

Boy: It is what I thought she wanted. It is about me. It is what only she understands.

Girl: And when I inhaled life, I felt the taste of your breath when I aborted you. I feel the selfish pain of
guilt that I betrayed you. I betrayed your father. I betrayed God.

Boy: It has always about me what she thought she wanted to have in life.

Girl: I could not support you as a single mom.

Boy: I wanted us to grow together through fate to face rejection from ignorance and betrayal. I wanted
to be a daddy.

Girl: I wanted your daddy to be a daddy.

Boy: But so she kept you a secret. I am sorry for her decision was final without much thought not
knowing the inevitable of one day seeing our child achieve.

Girl: I chose this path, to have an abortion, without reason but with just cause. And if I see purpose
through reasoning, wanting to tell your daddy the secret that lies within me, our souls will be redeemed.
Many tears, many tears, many tears; I cry.

Our Elders and Our Youth

Old wise tales falter the imagination

As myth in our young black minds

We cannot conceive diction

In liability of undisclosed pretense

Love is lonesome...

I love him like fine wine
With a twist of lime
I tremble down my spine

I love him like hot honey
Suckle remedy
Deeper and deeper I fall for him how funny

I love him in the spring
Mate like the birds and the fish
I love him in the fall
Where the wind nurtures the seed
My love for him is a feeling
passing by and bye
I love him when he whispers
passing by
I love him when he greets me
By and Bye
I love him when he chants song
In melodies and fragrance
My love for him is generic

I feel for him when we touch
I am afraid of letting go
I will be lonely...

Song is a companion
Words are spirit
Talent is a gift.

Paranoia

I am a paranoid schizophrenic and I hear voices. Sometimes they are helpful; while at other

times I find them annoying. Which preempted me to write a poem about voices? As an African

American, I find voices to be very much a part of how we conduct our lives. This is a personal

poem of how I have been able to survive as a schizophrenic. It has no pretense as an act of

hatred. Instead it is about coping and dealing with everyday issues as the voices contradict my

life as a black female, to identify with my social problems and attitude towards other people. It

was my intentions for this to be a form of African American form of poetic verse. This poem is

about me, my life, my culture, my family and friends and significant other. The poem is very real

in my life experiences. I hope to share my feelings to others in so they can understand who I am

as a person. The character Schizophrenia, me, as I cope with the disease I too am a survivor. I

hope it is shared at the Cultural Conference. I am passing this affiliate of myself onto you to

share with others.

Love

  • 1. Love written by, Angela Brown LOVE LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 2012 WRITTEN BY, ANGELA KHRISTIN BROWN Abstract: Through dialog, I wish to write about cultural experiences which are original illustration of social conditions faced in society. Examples of poetry will exhibit schemes as they are described from personal life experiences. If one person read my poem and like it, this would serve the purpose of being a poet. Writing poetry is my passion.
  • 2. Love written by, Angela Brown Author’s Vision Statement I am a civil rights activist. I believe in democracy where the people help elect officials who will determine their outcome. A democracy run government allows the people to mitigate principles that will affect the community. I am a cultural activist. I believe in humanism type government. A humanist government is determined by social aspects that affect running the government. A humanist type government governs the people.A republic type government the people elects officials who will enforce laws of propaganda that will help focus groups.A Marxist society the power is mandated by the government and the military power. All decisions from the government are dictated by a ruler or anarchist government.I am a modernist who believes that religion has to have a part in controlling the government influenced by the morals of society or faith. An anarchist believes in anti-Semitist society where the government fate is determined by demeaning antics to get what is necessary to run things their way.Women have been in the government for years. As a result of my research, I will adapt empathy towards cultural identity. I will enhance in providing helpful solutions to why we have problems in our community. I will be able to create a resource of data that can be used as a model to dictate society’s social norm. I will be able to write an affective paper on cultural awareness. I may be able to reach out to others on issues they do not normally talk about and understand so they can find solutions to their own communities. I will develop a plan of resources that can be used in changing society by providing helpful information to solve their problems. I would want others to understand that we have problems in society that are often disregarded as hopeless and are ignored. We can change the whole dichotomy of how racism affects the community. I can create awareness of social conventions of the twentieth century. Think about change; think about hope think about the youth. The youth are an important part of the community of leaders that will make changes in society in the near future. It was the youth that protested during the civil rights era. Making change is the responsibility of all Americans and of all adults. Too many of us reflect on democracy as an outlet to resolve social issues in the community. It may reflect on environmental issues or solve social issues within a community. It is important to recognize the importance of the community at large. These issues may reflect finding jobs for the unemployed, making projects within a jurisdiction of the community, providing the education
  • 3. Love written by, Angela Brown needed in the workforce to train students how to become a productive citizen within the community. This may mean to help women protect their rights against rape or abortion. It may mean to resolve social issues where black men are being harassed by police officers, beaten and killed like Traven Martin case. It may reflect on racism to determine why women are paid less than men. It may change the dictum of why there are more black women and men in prison. It may determine to change the outcome to becoming responsible adults and raising their kids in two parent homes. It may determine the outcome of racism in the classroom where blacks are still being graded lower than any other race where there work is not good enough to pass and the reason why they drop out of school at an early stage in their lives to turn to committing crimes. I am a poet. I have been writing poems for over 20 years. Writing is my passion. When I write, it becomes therapy for me. I write about social issues faced in society today. I write about the problems I encountered as an African American female in the twenty first century. I write about hope and spirituality. I believe that everyone can be their best if they meditate and kept their faith in God. I believe the most important aspect in life is to help others solve problems. It is important for us as a people to make the most out of life. The only way we can become true achievers is by helping others understand their own faults and find effective solutions to change. It is important in my writing journal to write how I reflect to social issues in society to help others understand who they are and what they are dealing with in life. I would want to allow others to use insight to radiate elements of hope or elements to change. I write about controversial issues faced in our community. Writing poetry is my way of giving back to the community. It is a form of therapy to release those positive tensions that counterparts in how society works. I hope to help others who read my work to relate to what I write and to find comfort there is someone out there who feels their pain, love and hope. If one person were to read my poem, and liked it, I would have served the purpose of the reason that I write. I was born in Meridian, Mississippi. I am a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. I have won awards for my literature: Poet Scholar, Poet Fellow, Poet Ambassador and Poet of Merit. I have been recognized for my poetry as: Poet Hall of Fame, Poet Laureate, and Who's Who in Poetry from the Library of Poetry. I have won awards for my theatrical work from: Skyfest, The National Black Theatre Association, Hollywood, and Fade on Line. I was given two book awards for poetry from Writer's Digest. I have published over 3 books of poetry.
  • 4. Love written by, Angela Brown I would receive amiable contributor to the world of literature. I would become an effective advocate to change democracy. I would be an advocate to policy change. I would help the community with insightful dialog and hope within cultures. I would create cultural awareness of all people to note there is hope and there are solutions that will help everyone. As I began writing, I was reminded how hope, love and spirituality has touched my life. My poems are a reflection on life experiences. My poems speak about traditional social conditions face in society today. One must discover the significance of our identity to aluminate our past and reflect on the present. Poetry is the root of hope. It is the heart of the street where ideas become cultural experiences. Poetry is a symbol of optimism share by tradition. My poems are a vision in progress… N2U chorus: you've bought my love stole my heart from the very start imp into you how many times its come back to this a broken heart tying me down yearning to escape could it be all in my mind all the lies that you gona stay going our separate ways you’ve got to stay chorus: you've bought my love stole my heart from the very start imp into you it’s come to this Icannot go on without you it’s come to this Ican’t go on without you

  • 8. Love written by, Angela Brown Songstress When we have forgotten our youth, Our glory fades in all reason. We have forgotten our dreams, We lost reason to remind us who we are. When we have lost all hope, We remember how her voice would carry And how her words created peace in our hearts. Granma She lived in honesty, as was loved by many She left with good intentions, a blessing bestowed For her family, she left a legacy of strong visionaries, A reflection upon her pride that left her mark to remember We shall not forget she cared enough, a mercenary and a vigilant Her soul reenacting love by so many touched by her heart Sweet Love Savor the nectar of my sweet breath with your lips Sample the essence of my forbidden fruit with your tongue Cradle the concave of my body structure Rock gently my figure from behind And listen for passion calling you Love For all thy beauty I am not worthy Let our love be true the test of times
  • 9. Love written by, Angela Brown For what left to all are we left to prove? Vixens desire passion trove Virtue is in prism for goodness show To defeat all reason love will grow Gaze deep inside my heart To see the sunshine over the bank Natures call to fertility As the planets move I dare not say How fair love be fair game All serenity will justify time 'Ah, I shall indulge tis apple, give me fruit.' Mental Health I feel comfortable within my skin My fate is determined by my faith I have love, security, food and drive I only flaw I do not have Is desire to not need Choices Longevity determines a choice you may choose to elevate to go up or down you may choose to move lateral at a sustaining pace Find truth in which you speak whatever direction you go, opens the door for others to follow The Purpose My Consent the innocent too coo when confronted with love; to coo is the mating call for love. As seasons change, Time begins its journey. When in matrimony, Time locks its capsule to console the love embedded within your hearts. When united a good thing to remember is that Laughter is the secret to serenity, Hope is God’s promise to longevity,
  • 10. Love written by, Angela Brown Faith builds bridges of engagement, and Trust is the foundation of friendship. May God bless this union? Motherhood I am afraid of this inquisition I am in I fear for delinquency of a child. To be born into invasion I cannot bore the fruit of acquisition. To inherit the cruel world that lies ahead I will not hold a child accountable for my deeds. For the pain that stirs within innocence lies in fear of a man’s race who challenges a black man’s will. My Children A child has a strong vision of the future A glance at the moon filters light upon darkness Bitter sweet temperament of hidden delicacies Can shatter a child’s dream I can hear their vocation crawl into daylight As death ears speak vein coral lies of innocence Children rise to altercations Speak out loud in full truths so your voices can be heard Public Housing In this building lies a fort Full of roaches, rats and tall marching ants Waiting to call this house their home In this building block is a confinement Contemptuous of creepy dark shadows striking its mate Waiting to call this house a prison In this building is a unit A solitary confinement of sanitation A safe house for prostitution, gang violence and drug use All too familiar places, we call… home

Love written by, Angela Brown Mississippi I always loved the place I called home Where all my family gathered for a meal at great grandpa’s house Great grandpa would bless the food Where everything on the table was fresh from the garden Freshly caught fish, fried green tomatoes, bread pudding Could fill an empty child’s stomach with plenty The elders spoke of good old times Until night came and we all slept peacefully Roots They were brought south to find slavery They found purges in the river where they were baptized They travelled east to find bondage They found beauty in dusky rivers at dawn They travelled north to find freedom The imagery in America’s salvation They travelled west to find opportunity They found a voice in the calm sea Distance America Africa so far away, where the Nile River parts its roots a savanna oasis of desert plumes America fills its belly with drums to unmask the dark flames of night Finding LOVE My heart calls for your touch As you grasp the palm of your hands Around my small waist To covet my stomach That carries our child My soul cries for you to whisper Passionate sweet things in my ear To hear you call my name in passion In unison as you speak To let me know you care for me

  • 15. Love written by, Angela Brown Player I thought I had a man. A BMW. Ooops;. But he fooled me into believing he was a good man. You see, I was not good to myself. I was not true to myself when I trusted my body to be used for free, for good conversation, for lust. I had been living a lie. I dreamt of the fairy tale wedding, having kids, a house, a good car and good job if I met the perfect mate. I thought worldly on him but you see he played me with his mind control act, that I believed it. I was his slut. You see, the player was a class act. He had it going on. He was all that. When I thought I had him wrapped around me pinky, I turned out to be a freak underneath the sheets. Brother had it going on. He was fine to me. He had a bank roll that he loved to spend on me. His personality was smooth. His conversation was intellectual. He had class. If he asked me to jump, I would say how high. For this man I was willing to go the distance. Sex was so good, I aint lying, I thought he was the one. You see, each moment of ecstasy was a lie. I was fooled into believing sex would make him special. Sex would make him all mine. Sex was the foundation of our relationship. Sex would keep him coming back to me. I had to have it. It did not matter where I did it. We could have sex in the jeep, sex at the crib, sex on the counter, sex at work, sex at school. I had an addiction to giving this man what he wanted, wherever he wanted whenever he wanted it. He wanted it so much; sex was the mind game we played. He tricked me into believing he needed me. He needed my loving as a token of chastity. With that said, I found the truth about sex after each child. He left me bare foot and pregnant year after year. That all those years of commitment, I was played. That I was a warm hole to pee in. that I was the kick on the side with a concubine to raise alone, no but by his cousin or maybe he said to give our child to his girlfriend or wife to raise. He said I was about nothing. I felt like nothing. There are 3 sorts of women to a man, his loyal wife, his loyal friend and his loyal freak. I was the freak he came too when his wife was not there to submit to him. Men are control freaks and if you are foolish enough to believe it, you have been played. I thought I was good enough for him to come back to me. I was a bag of tricks. Now all I speak of are commitments and having just one true love. All the men I knew were like this. I did not ask to be a hutchie mamma playing tricks by a bunch of high rollers. I wanted to be the innocent virgin who was respected and treated like an African queen. All I am saying is do not make the same mistake sleeping from man to man, when you deserve better. To My Unborn Girl: Sorry I disrespected you. All the times I lived longing for your daddy to step up to the plate, longing for your daddy to step up to the plate, longing for your daddy to step up to the plate to claim you. Boy: For I did not know of our Godly creation .Our baby is our own salvation.
  • 16. Love written by, Angela Brown Girl: Instead I saved you from the agony and distress before you were born into poverty, abandonment and denial. I protected you from neglect. Boy: It is what I thought she wanted. It is about me. It is what only she understands. Girl: And when I inhaled life, I felt the taste of your breath when I aborted you. I feel the selfish pain of guilt that I betrayed you. I betrayed your father. I betrayed God. Boy: It has always about me what she thought she wanted to have in life. Girl: I could not support you as a single mom. Boy: I wanted us to grow together through fate to face rejection from ignorance and betrayal. I wanted to be a daddy. Girl: I wanted your daddy to be a daddy. Boy: But so she kept you a secret. I am sorry for her decision was final without much thought not knowing the inevitable of one day seeing our child achieve. Girl: I chose this path, to have an abortion, without reason but with just cause. And if I see purpose through reasoning, wanting to tell your daddy the secret that lies within me, our souls will be redeemed. Many tears, many tears, many tears; I cry. Our Elders and Our Youth Old wise tales falter the imagination As myth in our young black minds We cannot conceive diction In liability of undisclosed pretense
  • 17. Love written by, Angela Brown The old are distinguished The young have virgin ears wanting to grow Young Black Youth The black youth justifies reason through fate In how they confront justice, Their mirror veins the Transformation from a boy to a man In conceit of wealth, Greed inhibits their will As their conscience prevails death A Burning Desire The world is a template of hope The sky has no limit The world is a temple of joy In the order how we conceive it The world has an abundance of treasure Concealed within our grasp The world is immense with guidance A parody of pleasure Women Women when confronted by life’s inquiry They challenge the economy of the world Women grasp morality with a fist And shun disparity with fear To define common ground

Love written by, Angela Brown A sphere of hardship and doubt Love is perseverance Old Age My health becomes moderate My mind becomes wiser My speech becomes articulate Old age builds character I become ripened with desire Love is lonesome... I love him like fine wine With a twist of lime I tremble down my spine I love him like hot honey Suckle remedy Deeper and deeper I fall for him how funny I love him in the spring Mate like the birds and the fish I love him in the fall Where the wind nurtures the seed My love for him is a feeling passing by and bye I love him when he whispers passing by I love him when he greets me By and Bye I love him when he chants song In melodies and fragrance My love for him is generic I feel for him when we touch I am afraid of letting go I will be lonely... Song is a companion Words are spirit Talent is a gift.
  • 19. Love written by, Angela Brown Paranoia I am a paranoid schizophrenic and I hear voices. Sometimes they are helpful; while at other times I find them annoying. Which preempted me to write a poem about voices? As an African American, I find voices to be very much a part of how we conduct our lives. This is a personal poem of how I have been able to survive as a schizophrenic. It has no pretense as an act of hatred. Instead it is about coping and dealing with everyday issues as the voices contradict my life as a black female, to identify with my social problems and attitude towards other people. It was my intentions for this to be a form of African American form of poetic verse. This poem is about me, my life, my culture, my family and friends and significant other. The poem is very real in my life experiences. I hope to share my feelings to others in so they can understand who I am as a person. The character Schizophrenia, me, as I cope with the disease I too am a survivor. I hope it is shared at the Cultural Conference. I am passing this affiliate of myself onto you to share with others. Ghosts My mind is playing tricks on me With what I write changes memory A re path from intentional meaning My mind is playing tricks on me with what I see is an image that is not clear My mind is playing tricks on me with what I remember is not what is so It is a mere delusion My mind is playing tricks on me with what I said is not what I meant
