2. Renata Fonte: her daughter, her story
Renata Fonte (Nardò -Italy- 1951-1984)
teacher and administrator strongly
committed to defending public affairs
and territory, in particular the park area
of ​​Porto Selvaggio - declared the
Regional Natural Park in 2006 -
assassinated at the age of 33 and
remembered Each year on March 21st,
among the innocent victims of crime
organized on the Day of Memory and
Commitment.
She was active in the civil and social
battles of the early eighties and was
struggling to avoid the landing and
speculation of construction of Porto
Selvaggio and discovered environmental
illicitities and the first mafia methods
that were coming to the Salento area.
On leaving the city council, the night between
March 31st and April 1st, 1984, just a few steps
from his home, he was assassinated with three
gunshots: he has been in a few thirty-thirty years.
The fierce crime has immediate national
resonance: the first mafia murder in Salento
perpetrated against a young woman, wife,
mother of two daughters, Sabrina and Viviana, an
example of political and civic engagement.

Our pupils met Sabrina
Metrangola, daughter of Renata
Fonte, who was killed by the mafia
at 33, on March 31, 1984.
The older boys told the youngest

biography of Renata Fonte.
Then Sabrina intervened and
handed us a "testimony of hope,"
saying,
"My mother is not a heroine, but a
'heretic' person, from the Greek
