2. •Andrew Whiteman attended Royal Oak High School in Michigan, excelling
academically and earning distinction as a distance runner. After
graduation, Michigan native Andrew Whiteman attended Oberlin College,
where he earned his bachelor of arts in biology.
3. •Located 35 miles west of Cleveland, Ohio, Oberlin College is home to the
Oberlin Conservatory of Music, America’s oldest continuously operating
conservatory. Of its nearly 3,000 students, 84 percent are from out of state
and 9 percent are from other countries. The Conservatory plays a major
role in the daily life of the Oberlin community, producing more than 500
concerts annually as well as more than 40 theater and dance productions.
4. •Since 2010, the Oberlin Conservatory has collaborated with the Cleveland
Orchestra to conduct the Thomas & Evon Cooper International
Competition. The competition has alternated annually between pianists, for
whom the debut competition was held, and violinists. Cash prizes are
awarded to each of the top six finishers, including a grand prize of $10,000.
In addition, the top three finalists perform a complete concerto with the
Cleveland Orchestra, and receive a full scholarship to attend the Oberlin
Conservatory.
