Review of the movie Transcendence

1. Film Review: Transcendence
The movie was about the scientists Evelyn and Will Caster who researches in the field of artificial
intelligence.They wantedtocreateaconsciouscomputer thatcancreate technological singularityorwhat
Will’s called Transcendence. Following his presentation, Will was shot by a member of anti-technology
groupcalledRevolutionaryIndependenceFromTechnology(R.I.F.T.) andgivenonlynotlessthanamonth
to live.Before Will dies,Evelynuploadedhisconsciousnessto a computersystemand then connectedit
in the internet to grow capability and knowledge.
After examining the movie,I identifiedseveral issues. First, what is the nature of consciousness? If soul
exist where it reside? These two questions has been raised in the beginning of the movie. For Will,
consciousnessisbeingself-awareandhave afull range of humanemotions. Andeventhe computerthey
inventedfind ithardto answerthisquestion.Come tothinkof it, can we be sure that we are self-aware
were in fact we are not? This is a good questiontoraise and it’sup for you to examine.Withregardsto
the conceptof the soul we all knowthatscience donotbelieveinitandfindithardtoprove itsexistence.
Another is, is it possible to create an artificial mind? Can a human mind be uploaded in the computer
system?Shouldartificial intelligence be created?Inwhat circumstances?AndfinallywouldA.Imake the
worldbetteroff? I findthese questionsintriguingparticularlyinthe fieldof science andphilosophysince
we are talking about human intelligence and consciousness. From the movie, it is possible to create an
artificial mindanduploadhuman mindin the computersince Will consciousnesshasbeenuploadedbut
howcan we be sure that it is him?How can we be sure that it is notjust an imitationof the real person?
The answers to these questions are quiet difficult to find but we can raised these questions in field of
philosophyparticularlyphilosophyof science andethicsaswell since disciplinestackledthisissues.With
regards, if A.I can make our lives better off, from the perspective of philosophy, I don’t think so since
Artificial Intelligence is unnatural abomination and a threat to humanity.
Lastly,the questionare youcreating your own God? Will answered,“Isn’t that what man has alwaysup
to? From this perspective, it is true since man always strive hard to become God and as the product of
man’sfreedomhe cannowcreate hisownGodwhichismore powerful andsuperintelligent andwhathe
calledTranscendence. The effectsof thisman-madeentityare vividlyseen inthe moviestartingfromable
to connect word wide and control people’s mind through the process of nanotechnology. And able to
create an organic body identical to the old one. From this point, he made himself a God. However, is it
truly possible to create a God? I will leave this question to you.
Overall,the movie wantstowarnus aboutthe dangerof playingGodand of technologicaloverdo. Andit
wantsto showthat even withoutinternetandotherelectronicshumancivilizationwill remain on earth.
