2. Ways to introduce a new
language.
Many people are not sure if it is smart to introduce young children to a new language.
While other believe it is best to "introduc(e) a foreign language at an early age is
important because recent research indicates the auditory system cannot develop new
"circuits" after the onset of adolescence."(Treadway, 1998)I have found many tools
that help teachers introduce children to a new language while they are young.
Each tool has it own way of introducing a new language and a way for teachers to
teach it.
The reason why I choose this topic is because a lot of schools seem to be introducing
language by having bilingual classes when children are young.
3. Learning through Duolingo
Duolingo is an language learning tool that recently became available to schools. Even
though it is not currently used for younger students it is used for grade 6 and up and
with the hope of become the number one go to tool for teacher and students.
(Techman,2015)
This program is great for many reasons, as the teacher is the one who sets the
classroom according to their students starting point. This program has many different
activities to help students learn and they develop as the student progresses. The
information in this program is also shareable with parents, so they can also keep track
of how their children are doing.
Duolingo alone won't teach you to speak a language fully and it is important to have a
teacher evaluate and analyze your work
4. Learning with Imagine
Unlimited Inc.
Although this program is not available everywhere it is designed to children in
kindergarten through fifth grade as they believe the best chance to learn a new
language is before they are adolescence.
This program is not a traditional class as children learn by fun and not an academic
setting. The co-founder of this program mentions that the class sits on the floor and
they integrate board games, songs, books, videos, and audio tapes on the chosen
language. (Treadway,1998)
Joshua is a student who took this course and is the youngest of her French class in
Centerville. Today, Joshua, who is about 9, speaks fluent English and French.
(Treadway,1998)
5. Learning with NewSpeak
Software
This software is designed for children ages 6 and up as they believe that children 10
and under have the ability to learn a new language . "KidSpeak's award-winning
immersion methodology engages young learners by introducing them to an animated
talking "friend" - a young character who speaks only the target language" (Business
Editors and Computer Writers, 1998)
This software allows children to learn both in written and spoken language. Children
learn by going through games and songs. The activities change as the children
advances.
Parents also have the option of following the work that their children are doing. The
software has a tips and ideas for parents to follow along. Also printable are available
so not all work has to be done on the computer.
6. What is similar and what is
different ?
Similarities
All these programs offer many
different languages.
They learn with games.
These programs are easy for teachers
to adapt and use the classroom.
Differences
Two programs are only for younger
children.
One is a class and not a software or
app.
Two of these programs allow parents
to be involved one way or another.
7. Connections
What I have learned so far is that children learn better when they are younger as they
absorb more information. Also that the reason for this is that children learn because
everything seems to be a game.
As said in the article about NewSpeak "We've learned that the brain is actually
changed when people are exposed to a foreign language before the age of 10"
(Business Editors and Computer Writers, 1998)
As said in article about Imagine Unlimited " the best chance to learn a foreign
language is before adolescence."(Treadway,1998)
As said in Duoling article " It belongs in every language classroom and on every school
device. " (Techman,2015)
8. Conclusion
Each programs has shown results in their own way. What allows there to be success in
those programs is that they are taught by teachers. Giving kids the best opportunity to
succeed.
Also helping in their success is the fact parents are involved.
As mentioned in the previous slide each program has said to be the best and has
helped children one way or another.
9. Connections with Families
The best thing about these programs is that families are encouraged to be involved.
Duolingo allows teachers to send information to parents which keeps parents
informed about their child's progress.
Newspeak gives parents the opportunity to do activities with their children
