Penny Should Be Eliminated Essay
Should the Production and Use of the Penny be Eliminated in the United States?
By Sydni Peters
If you gave Canada a penny for their thought, they'd advise you to get rid of the small copper coins. In fact, Canada, as well as many other countries
have already taken action to rid their nation of the need for their lowest valued currency. Meanwhile, in America, our one cent coins are losing their
value while causing other prices to rise. To discontinue the minting of these coins would mean better prices and a better economy. Furthermore, pennies
cost more than their value to create, leading to more debt for each impractical coin minted. Despite being a trademark piece of currency, the most
opportune option would be the abandonment of pennies. The United States should eliminate the penny because they are causing inflation and the results
would be extremely beneficial. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the article, "Penny Wise or 2.4 Cent Foolish?", the dropping of the penny could mean reduced prices and a strengthened economy. If
there were no penny, prices would have to be rounded. Some may argue that the more practical choice would be to raise prices to make more money.
However, in today's competitive market, many businesses would consider lowering prices to make their products more desirable. Currently, the
government loses millions of dollars to the minting of pennies. Moreover, in 2011, over $60.2 million was wasted on these coins that most of the
population does not even consider sensible. Getting rid of these coins would be the most economically beneficial choice for our nation and its

Another key point to eliminate the penny is that it is not convenient for the average person to carry or use. "The National Association of Convenience
Stores estimate that handling pennies adds 2.5 seconds per cash transaction."(Tierney). This shows that the penny wastes more time than is needed to
make a simple cash transaction. Also, if someone drops a penny onto the ground most people don't see that it is worth their time to pick up, proving
that the penny means nearly nothing to the average person. Most people today sees pennies as a nuisance and not worth the time to carry. People
today use debit/credit cards to purchase most things which renders the penny pointless since no one wants to use except in a last resort. Today charities

Why Keep Pennies
Kase Givinsky
Stay Penny Stay!
A penny saved is a penny earned! That is a famous quote by a man named Benjamin Franklin. That's a famous quote because people in America like
pennies and appreciate them for their value.Pennies have been around for over two–hundred years and have made american history.Pennies have
invented all sorts of idioms and have shaped the currency of America. If you don't believe this and you are one of those people who want to get rid of the
penny, stay and read and maybe this will change your thoughts to the right mindset.
Why should we keep the penny, some people ask.People are accusing the penny of inflation. The penny is bad according to people, but to others the
penny is the best thing in the world.Reason one to why we should keep the penny is that the penny has been around for over 200 years. You may
ask,Why is that important? It is important because pennies have helped shape America's currency system. They have been around since 1787 and have
had 11 different designs. On top of just the fact that they have had a big impact on America, they also are useful to prices that are for example,17
dollars and 38 cents. You have to pay the last 2 cents so you grab 2 pennies and use that. Also Without pennies, bad things including taxes and other
economical factors might inflate or might be messed up.

With every negative there is a positive.Getting rid of pennies could save time and save businesses money.Getting rid of pennies would save businesses
money because every time a cashier/customer sat their for 5 seconds to 10 seconds counting pennies, that would add time to the cashier's paycheck
which means they would get extra money counting the money's hours and a business would have to pay extra money for this so they would lose to
over a million dollars. That saying,Time is Money,is very true.Especially in store's and other things.Time does cost money. There is negatives to the

Synthesis Essay: Keep The Penny
The penny is a small and insignificant piece of American history. Causing extra time in grocery lines, to being found useless on the streets, there is no
real reason to keep the penny in circulation.
Click, Click, Click... the penny falls helplessly onto the floor from the customer's wallet as they pull out a crisp five dollar bill. There the penny will stay
unless it is swept up into a long forgotten corner or somewhere on the street. The Times John Tierney noted five years ago, that "two–thirds of pennies"
share a similar fate. (Source C) For every penny the government manufactures we lose a half of a cent, though seemingly miniscule, when multiplied by
the ten million pennies minted on a daily basis, that's an even five million dollars going

Calculating the Actual Copper Amount in a Penny
Introduction:
In 1909, on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, the one cent coin (penny) was introduced. Between 1864 and 1982, the penny was
made of 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin. In the 1980s the cost of producing the penny grew to be higher than its face value so, in 1982 the
composition of the penny was altered to have a core of zinc metal with a thin copper shell. The percentage of copper now allowed in the penny by
Congress is 2.5% by mass.
The objective of this experiment was to calculate the percentage of copper in three random pennies by applying ... Show more content on

In the fume hood, 3 mL of a 15 M concentrated ammonia solution was added to each volumetric flask. The flasks were swirled until all solids were
dissolved. Each flask was diluted to volume with distilled water, covered with Parafilm, and mixed. The concentration (in g/L) of Cu2+ was calculated
in each of the six standard solutions.
To prepare the penny samples three pennies were obtained with one penny assigned to each group member. Each penny was weighed and their
masses were recorded in the notebook. The year the pennies were made and the condition the pennies were in were also recorded in the notebook.
In the fume hood each penny was placed into a 150 mL beaker. 25 mL of 6 M HNO3 was added to each beaker. The pennies dissolved and the
remaining solutions were left to cool for 10 minutes. The three beakers' contents were quantitatively transferred into three separate 100 mL volumetric
flasks using a funnel. To make sure there was no loss of sample, the beaker was rinsed with 5–10 mL of water four times, each time the rinse solution
being added to the volumetric flask. Still in the fume hood, 14 mL of concentrated ammonia solution was added to each volumetric flask using a
graduated cylinder. The volumetric flasks were swirled to establish the blue color and dissolve any solids. If any

The Importance Of Keeping The Penny
Pennies existence makes cents! Have you ever thought about getting rid of the penny? If we get rid of the penny, the cash register, bank, computers
would have to be restarted. It also means forgetting Abraham Lincoln. The National Treasury Department, the president, and other people who think the
penny is useless but is not. So we should do everything to save the penny! According to Greg Peck, in his article he stated that Barack Obama said,
"We have been trying to eliminate the penny," shows that Obama is against keeping the penny. "But it will always come back. I need to find out who
is lobbying to keep the penny." Although President Obama does not want to keep the penny anymore, he should decide to let us vote. Let's say that the

Pros And Cons Of Pennies
Around the world, people are deciding whether or not the penny should be retired. There are some places that have ended the production of pennies
and had a successful penny–free economy, while others are still trying to figure out whether we should still use the penny or not. Now, the cost to
produce a penny is more than the actual worth of a penny itself. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said, "The penny is a currency without any currency in
Canada, and it costs us 1.5 cents to produce a penny." In places such as Canada though, they have no need for pennies anymore because they don't see
the benefits of them, but in places such as the U.S. the penny could be really useful when you actually think about it. When pennies all add up they
can really make a difference in the economy and because of this, I believe that the penny should not be retired. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Therefore, everything will cost more and workers will need to make more money. Right now, everyday things from anywhere are pretty pricey and
without the penny they would be more expensive. Sally Ritchie of Retail Council of Canada said, "Our members are not opposed to the proposal
as long as the proposed system of rounding is adequately explained to Canadians." She's saying that they are capable of making the prices go up and
that everyone will agree as long as they understand and are aware of what is going on and why. I find this horrendous because in reality, money wise,
some people have it easier than others and if prices go up, the regular working class with suffer more than the higher

Recently, there has been news regarding the debate of the penny. The U.S. and Canadian government believe that the penny is a nuisance and takes up
space in cabinets and dressers. They believe that the penny should be taken out of the system. However the penny is a great influence on American
culture, yet it causes a fortune to manufacture a single one. In the first place, the penny should be kept as American currency because of the great impact
it holds. For instance in the article, The Ever–Changing Penny, the author states, "The history of a penny reveals... a piece of American culture. The
one–cent piece has influenced our language... such as 'a penny for your thoughts'"(Story 5). Provided with this evidence, the author is saying that the

Although this may be true, according to The Ever–Changing Penny, the text states, "In 2011, it cost... 2.4 cents to produce one penny... production
costs are slightly lower today... just over 1.8 cents to produce"(Story 5). As a result under this piece of evidence, the price of the penny is lowering
every few years. The materials used to construct the penny could be changed to more common and cheap metals. An equally important piece of
information comes from the article Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?, where Sommer states, "The mint defer to Congress, and Congress hasn't told it
to abolish the penny. Lawmakers have directed the mint to study ways to make small coins more cheaply"(Sommer 3). Provided the information, the
mint has tried to reach out the Congress in hopes of getting an answer, yet the Congress never made a decision. In hope that the U.S. Mint does believe
that they can create more efficient pennies with cheaper materials, than the U.S. will keep the one–cent

Pennies Should Be Eliminated Essay
Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck. This commonly used saying is being valued less and less as the days progress. On a
daily basis, thousands of people walk down the streets of busy cities. Today the majority of people state that when they pass by a penny on the ground,
they don't stop to pick it up. Due to this and many other reasons penny production should cease. In society, other countries have chosen to withdraw
their coins, pennies lack circulation, and they are costly to produce, leading us, as a nation, to lean towards the decision of stopping their production.
Each day, around the world, countries and governments choose to make changes daily, leading citizens to believe that the use of the penny could
easily be abolished. Back in the 1800's, America partook in the use of a half cent. In 1857, the government decided that it was too much of a nuisance
and was not used often enough. As a nation, we chose to stop its production. After its eradication, there was no record of the people struggling to adjust

their wallets, leading them to leave these pennies at the cash register or in a change jar. Furthermore, a penny left in a change jar is very likely to be
left untouched. Items don't cost only one cent! These pennies will then sit in this change jar for months or even years, until someone decides to donate

Did you know the first penney the u.S. has ever seen was created and produced in the year 1857? The penny we know of has been in the states for
161 years. In the year 2012 there was a proposal that the United States get rid of the penny, the least valuable coin in the money system. The penny
has so little value, but cost too much to make. Although the U.S. loses millions of dollars a year to the production of pennies, American pennies
should not be ceased minting because of the risk of economic changes, the piece of culture they each possess and their " power in numbers".
To begin with, pennies aren't the only coins that cost too much to make. According to Jeff Sommer, who wrote the article "Penny Wise,or 2.4 Cents

As illustrated, by Maria Story " The one–cent piece, commonly referred to as the "penny" has been apart of United States history for over two–hundred
years" (Story). As can be seen, the American penny has been around for centuries. Who's to say that phasing out this coin won't affect America? To dig
even deeper, Story describes how the penny has affected the U.S. " The history of the penny reveals more than just a coin–it exposes a piece of
American culture. The one–cent piece has influenced our languages..." (Story). As noted, the penny has not only shaped America's culture, but the
language too. Taking away the penny will tear a piece of American identity. To conclude, the penny should remain a part of U.S. economy because of its
influence in American language and culture. For those that agree, with phasing out the penny they will argue that it cost moremoney to make and mint
the pennies than what they're worth. However, Ted Waterhouse begs to disagree. According to Ted Waterhouse " Last week, Washington middle
school hosted its annual Penny Drive... they raised over $3000 in one week" (Waterhouse). As shown, it took one week to raise $3000! Imagine how
much they'll raise in two weeks or even a month. To summarize, pennies may be small and worthless by themselves but when you add them together

Argumentative Essay About Pennies
Growing up, many kids had piggy banks and enjoyed collecting loose change to save up for toys. Kids would cherish even a single penny to add to
their collection. However, with inflation and the increase in credit transactions, pennies are becoming ineffective. Pennies cost the government
unnecessary amounts of money to produce, harshly impact the environment, and are not practical to use.
Pennies waste precious taxpayer dollars every year. Pennies have costed the US government more to mint than than their face value for the past 11
years, reports CBS News, and their production cost is subsidized with taxpayer dollars. The Wall Street Journal reports that in 2016, pennies cost 1.5
cents to produce, which totals to about 46 million dollars every year. Furthermore, pennies are becoming more and more out of circulation, so the US
mint must continue producing more pennies every year, only adding to the unnecessary government spending they cause. ... Show more content on

For our manipulated variable my partner and I decided to have the surface side of the penny being heads or tails as our variable that we control and
change. My partner and I both had the hypothesis that the side of the penny being heads or tails wouldn't change the number of drops that were able to
be dropped on the penny. The surface tension on both sides of the penny are very similar. The only difference that is stated according to (Daily mail:
December 2, 2012) is that the head's side of the penny is slightly heavier because of the portrait of Abraham Lincoln on this side of the coin. In the end,
we believed that this did not affect the outcome of this experiment because it was about the surface of the penny not the slight weight difference.

The debate over whether or not the United States should continue to create and use the penny may not seem very important, but it actually is due to
cost and usage. Although the penny has a long history in the United States and can be considered an icon, in reality it is just not feasible anymore to
continue to make the penny.
According the article "Give a Penny–Save the Day" written by Ted Waterhouse, it cost more than 2.4 cents to create one penny. That is double the
amount the penny is worth. The US mint which creates our money is investigating how to make the penny more cost effective, but in reality we could

Most Americans actually would rather refuse a penny as change than keep it. It is more common to see a penny on the floor than any other coin. I

a school in which hosted their annual Penny drive which is where people come to donate unwanted pennies to charity. All in all, the school,
Washington Middle School raised over $3,000 which was wonderful but demonstrates just how unwanted pennies are. "Pennies don't really matter

Name something that costs one penny, it is probably impossible with today's economy. The penny is not beneficial anymore due to the dangerous
metals released into the environment and the coin is just too expensive to produce. So why do Americans keep this unwanted coin around?
The metals used in producing the penny are too dangerous and costly. First, zinc and copper are the main components in the penny production, which is
threatening to the environment. First, almost all the penny is made up of zinc, which in high doses is harmful to animals and even humans. According
to "Livingston", "In addition, zinc itself, though in small amounts, is harmful in high doses to both humans and animals." Second, zinc and copper are
too expensive in the making of the penny. To justify, the demand price for zinc has doubled and the demand price for copper has tripled. As

First, the U.S. Mint spends twice as much money than they really need to, to create the penny. To validate, the penny production is worth around
decuple times more than the actual penny itself. As articulated by "Livingston", "According to the 2014 Annual Report from the U.S. Mint, it now
costs $0.017 – or 1.7 cents – to make one cent. That means whenever the Mint produces a penny and sends it out to a bank, it is actually losing
money on the deal." Second, the overall total the government spends on pennies is over millions of dollars. In particular, the U.S. Mint produces

How weird is the fact that making money costs money? Not only that, but in some cases, coins cost more to make than they're economically worth!
Due to this, many believe the penny should be out of production, as should the nickel, potentially. Others believe that the coin's historical value, with it
being similar to a heirloom in terms of age and personal value, should be enough to keep it in production. However, when considering how expensive
manufacturing can get and how often the penny is used, it's obvious getting rid of the penny is the best choice. It's a strange thought; how money costs
money, or how the amount needed to make a few coins could greatly outweigh how much they're worth. This is only one of many reasons why the
Canadian government is debating whether or not to get rid of the penny. Stated by, "Penny Wise, or 2.4 cents Foolish?", "each zinc and copper coin
costs 2.41 cents to make," and"..'from the standpoint of economics, that's just a total waste of money,' Mr. Velde says."(Sommer). Due to the

The year that the composition of the pennies changed started after 1982, it wasn't until 1983 did the pennies composition fully changed. Before 1982,

started to change the metallic compositions of the pennies to 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. It wasn't until 1983 did the metallic compositions of the

measure the mass for each of the light and heavy pennies the scale needed to be zeroed every time. At one point, we accidently didn't zero out the
scale and had to take in account that the one or more of light pennies we measured weighed more than the others because we forgot to zero out the
scale beforehand. For example, we measured a light penny with the year 1984, and measured it to be around 2.544 grams, only problem was we
forgot to zero out the scale. When we measured it again it came out to be around 2.506 grams or less. Another factor is when we took the pennies
off we tried to zero the scale immediately, which either caused the machine to not zero at all or cause the next penny measurement to be off. The
procedure should be modified to address that the scale must be zeroed out before and after any light or heavy pennies are measured to get accurate
results. The procedure also should address the need for accurate measurements and should advise the experimenter to remeasure the same light and
heavy pennies again to check for any measurement errors. Another possible error that could have occurred during our experiment is after the first trial
the wet pennies affected the mass and the outcome of our second trial results. During our first trial of the light pennies we had a volume water
displacement of 5.1 ml, but on the second

Money is crucial in many ways or everyday events like for buying food, paying rent, etc. Money has its own value but not all currency is used.
Money has its own value but not all currency is used. The penny has the least amount of currency and is found on the sidewalk, sofa, in between car

Pennies are used by Americans more than they realize. Parents give pennies to their children to throw into fountains in hopes of having their wish come
true. Others rely on finding a penny on the ground for good luck. Despite the little value a penny holds, it may impact the economic status of Americans
and charities, has importance in the pricing system, and remains as a part of American history.
Charities depend on pennies as a source of donations in order to achieve their goals. Source C mentions the penny as worthless, however, charities hold
penny drives that encourage citizens to contribute their unwanted change, which mostly includes pennies, that add up to large amounts of money.
Abolishing the penny hinders charities of their purpose to aid others in need. Also, in source E, the chart displays that Americans with an income less

In source D, Weller reiterates that the penny holds an important factor in maintaining the pricing system. Also, mentioned in source A, the
elimination of pennies causes the prices of products to round up or down to the nearest nickel. Store owners would use the elimination as an
opportunity to gain more profit by rounding prices up. The government also has an advantage over the removal because taxes would increase as a
result of nickels becoming the least valued coin. However, the nickel becoming the least value coin also has a downside as it costs around ten cents
to make a nickel whereas it costs about two cents to produce a penny. Also, by eliminating the penny and allowed the nickel to become the least
valued coin, gas prices would go up and the price of gas is already extremely high. Americans would have more stress put onto them by worrying
about the rising prices of basic necessities. Both source A and source D unveils that although people may perceive the penny as valueless, it keeps the

The Price Of The Penny
In a world where the penny is abolished, when a person walks up to the checkout line to pay for a chocolate candy bar the smallest denomination
coin in their pocket is a nickel. The price of the transaction could be one dollar and five cents without tax, but if the tax is included it would round to
one dollar and ten cents. Customers would have replaced their pockets filled of pennies with pockets of nickels wondering if they could grow
accustomed to life without the other coin. The penny, our lowest denomination coin, gives way to a controversial subject; while some may feel that out
lowest denomination coin should be discontinued, it is clearly evident that the coin should be kept because it's vital towards the stability of our economy,

Another thing to think about is the fact that the penny costs more to make than it is worth. In Source C the writer acknowledges that, "it takes nearly a
dime today to buy what a penny bought back in 1950s" yet pennies are still in circulation. This stabilizes the economy by ensuring that the penny won't
be overproduced. Instead of making money with no monetary value, the US MINT has to properly conduct monetary policy because it costs more
money to produce the coin.
Our lowest denomination coin serves as a reminder of Lincoln's legacy. The 16th President is known for unifying the people politically, socially,
and economically after the civil war. Source C argues that " even President Lincoln...would be ashamed to have his face on this specious specie"; the
arguer overlooked the fact that Lincoln set out to unify the people. As discovered by the Harrison Poll two thirds of the people valued the penny,
which means Lincoln would have kept the penny in circulation. According to some like Michael Bishop " the penny is perhaps the most visible and
tangible reminder of Lincoln's significance in American history"(Source F). Lincoln was the first historical figure to appear on a form of American
coinage. Banning the penny would be disrespectful to his memory and his contributions to society. Plus according to source F, in 2009 President Bush

Essay On The Density Of Pennies
After the process of weighing and finding volumes of both sets of pennies, the density of both sets were resolved. The density of the pennies minted

density of copper is 8.92 g/cmВі. The percent error between the density of copper and the density of the pennies minted pre 1982 was found to be

The pennies that were dropped into the graduated cylinder could have caused some of the water to splash out of it. This may have caused an error in
measuring the volume, this would have caused the volume measured to be less than the actual volume, thus allowing the density of the pennies to
increase, causing the lab results to be uneven. Another source of error has to do with the mass of the pennies. After the pennies were taken out of the
graduated cylinders filled with water, there was still some water droplets left on the pennies when put on the triple beam balance. This extra weight of
the water may have caused the measurement in the mass of the pennies to be more than they actually were. This outcome could have caused the density
of the pennies to be increased as well, making the lab results inconstant. Any type of coating, for example rust, on the penny may affect the mass. This
will add to the mass making it higher, and since density is proportional to the mass, the density will be calculated higher than what it actually

Abolish The Penny Essay
In our world today what can we buy with a penny coin? The answer is nothing. There are many controversial arguments about keeping or getting rid of
the penny. I think eliminating this coin can be a positive thing. If we abolish the penny, the United States would be saving time, money, and resources.
In Forbes magazine, Neena Moorjani said "It's practically useless in everyday life" (Lewis). Most people today fling their pennies into the trash, they
drop out of circulation, or in couch cushions where you won't see them again. In the 1900's there was a thing called penny candy. You could go to a
local store and buy one piece, or a few pieces of your favorite candy with just one penny. Today, candy bars from a gas station can cost up to two
dollars. Adding to this, vending machines cause problems with coins. The vending machines used to take all types of coins, nickels, dimes and even
pennies. If you try to put a penny in a machine now it will just spit it back out or an alarm will sound. In stores when someone says "one second I

Zealand, Brazil, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Britain, have already dropped their lowest–denominated coin (Sommer).
The penny is just a waste of space, time, and money. Each zinc and copper coin cost 2.41 cents to produce and distribute (Sommer). In 2010, the U.S.

How would you feel if you could save thousands of dollars a year? You can, if you don't eliminate the penny. Canada stopped making pennies and
maybe the United States will too. The debate is should we or should we not eliminate the penny. The United States should not eliminate the penny for
three reasons they are helpful for charities, they're part of our American culture, and you can lose your money.
To start, pennies should not be eliminated for many reasons one reason is that they are very helpful for charities. For example, Washington Middle
School brought bags and jars of pennies and raised over $3,000 in one week for a charity penny drive. This shows that pennies can add up quick
because they are worth so little. In addition, an eighth grader at WMS said, " He was happy to give them to someone who could use them." In others
words, you can always contribute a penny to a better benefit by donating them to a greater good. Furthermore, WMS found out that there is a power in

Argumentative Essay About Pennies
To American Citizens,
Chance are, you've likely used a penny in your lifetime. Everywhere you look, you'll find pennies. Between your couch cushions or on the street,
pennies are everywhere. But have you ever thought, how much do pennies cost, and why do we still use them? We need to get the United States Mint
to stop production of the penny and slowly take it out of circulation. This is only possible if we all band together and demand a change in our currency.
Before we finally agree to do away with the penny, let's learn a little bit more about its history. "The penny, the first currency of any type authorized by
the U.S. government, was initially struck in 1787, though it didn't become legal tender until 1856. Since then, more than 300 billion one–cent coins have
been minted. Abraham Lincoln became the first U.S. president to adorn a coin when he was put on the penny in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of his
birth (he wasn't added to the $5 bill until 1914). The Lincoln penny was also the first to include the inscription "In God We Trust" ("Should We
Eliminate the Penny?") If the penny seems like an ancient artifact, that's because it is. Pennies were made over 200 years ago. Don't you think in such a
fluctuating and constantly changing economy, a newer form of currency would be necessary?

Why Should Pennies Not Be Banned
Pennies should not be manufactured anymore. Some reasons why are that people hardly use them, it is not a ban, and because they are just not
important. One reason pennies should not continue to be made is because people barely ever try to pay with pennies, or do anything with pennies. In
Jeff Sommers article from the New York Times, he quotes a Canadian finance minister, "Pennies take up too much space on our dressers at
home".(Sommer) This quote shows people have pennies for no reason, they sit at their homes and have no use but to take up space. Jeff Sommer also
quoted a government brochure that stated, "We often store them in jars, throw them away in water fountains, or refuse them as change".(Sommer) If
some places don't even accept them as change, then they are very useless. Also this quote shows people don't care for pennies enough to keep them....

Penny Is A Waste Of Time Essay
Some people are arguing that the penny is just a waste of time to make, it takes up too much space and it takes forever to count out. Some people

Even though this might seem crazy there is a very good explanation to this the penny costs more to make than its actual value it cost more and it
takes up a lot of space. Reason one it takes up a lot of space, reason two they take too long to count. These are two reasons that on why people hate

Abolishing The Penny Essay
The penny, also known simply as the one–cent coin, was first made about 230 years ago in 1787. The first penny ever made was 100% copper and it
was heavier and larger than the usual penny today. The design itself was suggested by the famous Benjamin Franklin ("A Brief History of the U.S.
Cent"). Lately, people have talked about the idea of abolishing the penny, but others disagree. The penny should not be abolished. Granted, pennies
waste time. MoneyCrasher.com had this to say: "Often, when we pay with cash at a store, the total amount doesn't end in a multiple of $0.05... [so] we

To begin, nickels cost more than pennies. An article on The Spruce says this: "[The] Mint can make 5 pennies and still lose less money than making
1 nickel" (Headley). This quoted information is basically saying that it would cost less for five pennies to be made compared to just one nickel. The
cost difference is actually about 1.4 cents, which doesn't seem like much, but it may become a larger problem when the money amount adds up in the
end. Furthermore, if the penny were abolished and the nation would be stuck using nickels, then the Mint would lose even more money. A popular
argument for the abolishment of the penny is that it wastes the money for the Mint. This is partly true, but if the pennies were entirely eliminated, more
nickels would be in demand, which would cost the Mint more. Twenty nickels, which equals a dollar, costs about $1.54 to make, compared to a dollar
amount of pennies, which costs $1.26 to make. With all the pennies abolished, the number of nickels made would have to double, which would subtract
more money from the Mint, leaving them with even money savings less than before

"Goodbye, Lincoln penny. You served us well but your time has passed" (Whaples). The penny has been nearly worthless for some time and its
elimination has been subject to quite a large amount of controversy for the past few years. However, it may finally be time for President Lincoln to
stop being minted. The penny costs about one and a half cents to make, causing inflation and making pennies seem like a waste to mint. Also, if
pennies were to disappear, prices would be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel, allowing both distributors, producers, and consumers to save more
money over time, not to mention the estimated $300 million lost in the time American citizens spend attempting to use pennies.

Each penny costs about a penny and a half to make and doing without it could save taxpayers millions of dollars (Whaples) and if saving taxpayer
money is not patriotic, then what is? If need be, Congress can decide to make a new one dollar coin (replacing the dollar bill with a coin might save
the U.S. government an additional $500 per year)(Whaples) with Lincoln's face, and he will always be immortalized on the face of the five dollar

worth very little, so why even have them. A penny is just one cent. I repeat one single cent! Mine as well get rid of them they take away bronze,
wallet space, or even house space. Pennies should no longer be produced.
Did you know that pennies cost more than they are worth? In the United States it costs us 2 dollars and 41 cents to produce it and send them out.
Outrageous considering it is only worth 1 cent. It costs all the people of America for pennies. If you have a big bill you aren't going to pay in pennies
because it would take all day to count. If we didn't have pennies look at how much

Should the US Eliminate the Penny

  • 1. Penny Should Be Eliminated Essay Should the Production and Use of the Penny be Eliminated in the United States? By Sydni Peters If you gave Canada a penny for their thought, they'd advise you to get rid of the small copper coins. In fact, Canada, as well as many other countries have already taken action to rid their nation of the need for their lowest valued currency. Meanwhile, in America, our one cent coins are losing their value while causing other prices to rise. To discontinue the minting of these coins would mean better prices and a better economy. Furthermore, pennies cost more than their value to create, leading to more debt for each impractical coin minted. Despite being a trademark piece of currency, the most opportune option would be the abandonment of pennies. The United States should eliminate the penny because they are causing inflation and the results would be extremely beneficial. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the article, "Penny Wise or 2.4 Cent Foolish?", the dropping of the penny could mean reduced prices and a strengthened economy. If there were no penny, prices would have to be rounded. Some may argue that the more practical choice would be to raise prices to make more money. However, in today's competitive market, many businesses would consider lowering prices to make their products more desirable. Currently, the government loses millions of dollars to the minting of pennies. Moreover, in 2011, over $60.2 million was wasted on these coins that most of the population does not even consider sensible. Getting rid of these coins would be the most economically beneficial choice for our nation and its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Penny Argumentative Essay Another key point to eliminate the penny is that it is not convenient for the average person to carry or use. "The National Association of Convenience Stores estimate that handling pennies adds 2.5 seconds per cash transaction."(Tierney). This shows that the penny wastes more time than is needed to make a simple cash transaction. Also, if someone drops a penny onto the ground most people don't see that it is worth their time to pick up, proving that the penny means nearly nothing to the average person. Most people today sees pennies as a nuisance and not worth the time to carry. People today use debit/credit cards to purchase most things which renders the penny pointless since no one wants to use except in a last resort. Today charities and ... • 3. Why Keep Pennies Kase Givinsky Stay Penny Stay! A penny saved is a penny earned! That is a famous quote by a man named Benjamin Franklin. That's a famous quote because people in America like pennies and appreciate them for their value.Pennies have been around for over two–hundred years and have made american history.Pennies have invented all sorts of idioms and have shaped the currency of America. If you don't believe this and you are one of those people who want to get rid of the penny, stay and read and maybe this will change your thoughts to the right mindset. Why should we keep the penny, some people ask.People are accusing the penny of inflation. The penny is bad according to people, but to others the penny is the best thing in the world.Reason one to why we should keep the penny is that the penny has been around for over 200 years. You may ask,Why is that important? It is important because pennies have helped shape America's currency system. They have been around since 1787 and have had 11 different designs. On top of just the fact that they have had a big impact on America, they also are useful to prices that are for example,17 dollars and 38 cents. You have to pay the last 2 cents so you grab 2 pennies and use that. Also Without pennies, bad things including taxes and other economical factors might inflate or might be messed up. This next reason that is about to be spoken is most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With every negative there is a positive.Getting rid of pennies could save time and save businesses money.Getting rid of pennies would save businesses money because every time a cashier/customer sat their for 5 seconds to 10 seconds counting pennies, that would add time to the cashier's paycheck which means they would get extra money counting the money's hours and a business would have to pay extra money for this so they would lose to over a million dollars. That saying,Time is Money,is very true.Especially in store's and other things.Time does cost money. There is negatives to the penny and there is ... • 4. Synthesis Essay: Keep The Penny The penny is a small and insignificant piece of American history. Causing extra time in grocery lines, to being found useless on the streets, there is no real reason to keep the penny in circulation. Click, Click, Click... the penny falls helplessly onto the floor from the customer's wallet as they pull out a crisp five dollar bill. There the penny will stay unless it is swept up into a long forgotten corner or somewhere on the street. The Times John Tierney noted five years ago, that "two–thirds of pennies" share a similar fate. (Source C) For every penny the government manufactures we lose a half of a cent, though seemingly miniscule, when multiplied by the ten million pennies minted on a daily basis, that's an even five million dollars going ... Penny Lab Report Ruth Habte Lab Partners: John Gould & Ashton Hall TA: Jess Bases Professor Yasmin Jessa Chemistry 144 Section C 11 November 2015 Calculating the Actual Copper Amount in a Penny Introduction: In 1909, on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, the one cent coin (penny) was introduced. Between 1864 and 1982, the penny was made of 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin. In the 1980s the cost of producing the penny grew to be higher than its face value so, in 1982 the composition of the penny was altered to have a core of zinc metal with a thin copper shell. The percentage of copper now allowed in the penny by Congress is 2.5% by mass. The objective of this experiment was to calculate the percentage of copper in three random pennies by applying ... Each flask was diluted to volume with distilled water, covered with Parafilm, and mixed. The concentration (in g/L) of Cu2+ was calculated in each of the six standard solutions. To prepare the penny samples three pennies were obtained with one penny assigned to each group member. Each penny was weighed and their masses were recorded in the notebook. The year the pennies were made and the condition the pennies were in were also recorded in the notebook. In the fume hood each penny was placed into a 150 mL beaker. 25 mL of 6 M HNO3 was added to each beaker. The pennies dissolved and the remaining solutions were left to cool for 10 minutes. The three beakers' contents were quantitatively transferred into three separate 100 mL volumetric flasks using a funnel. To make sure there was no loss of sample, the beaker was rinsed with 5–10 mL of water four times, each time the rinse solution being added to the volumetric flask. If we get rid of the penny, the cash register, bank, computers would have to be restarted. It also means forgetting Abraham Lincoln. The National Treasury Department, the president, and other people who think the penny is useless but is not. So we should do everything to save the penny! According to Greg Peck, in his article he stated that Barack Obama said, "We have been trying to eliminate the penny," shows that Obama is against keeping the penny. "But it will always come back. I need to find out who is lobbying to keep the penny." Although President Obama does not want to keep the penny anymore, he should decide to let us vote. Let's say that the president ... • 8. Pros And Cons Of Pennies Around the world, people are deciding whether or not the penny should be retired. There are some places that have ended the production of pennies and had a successful penny–free economy, while others are still trying to figure out whether we should still use the penny or not. Now, the cost to produce a penny is more than the actual worth of a penny itself. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said, "The penny is a currency without any currency in Canada, and it costs us 1.5 cents to produce a penny." In places such as Canada though, they have no need for pennies anymore because they don't see the benefits of them, but in places such as the U.S. the penny could be really useful when you actually think about it. When pennies all add up they can really make a difference in the economy and because of this, I believe that the penny should not be retired. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, everything will cost more and workers will need to make more money. Right now, everyday things from anywhere are pretty pricey and without the penny they would be more expensive. Sally Ritchie of Retail Council of Canada said, "Our members are not opposed to the proposal as long as the proposed system of rounding is adequately explained to Canadians." She's saying that they are capable of making the prices go up and that everyone will agree as long as they understand and are aware of what is going on and why. • 9. The Ever-Changing Penny Recently, there has been news regarding the debate of the penny. The U.S. and Canadian government believe that the penny is a nuisance and takes up space in cabinets and dressers. They believe that the penny should be taken out of the system. However the penny is a great influence on American culture, yet it causes a fortune to manufacture a single one. In the first place, the penny should be kept as American currency because of the great impact it holds. For instance in the article, The Ever–Changing Penny, the author states, "The history of a penny reveals... a piece of American culture. The one–cent piece has influenced our language... such as 'a penny for your thoughts'"(Story 5). Provided with this evidence, the author is saying that the penny is very important to Americans, as it created part of our language. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this may be true, according to The Ever–Changing Penny, the text states, "In 2011, it cost... 2.4 cents to produce one penny... production costs are slightly lower today... just over 1.8 cents to produce"(Story 5). As a result under this piece of evidence, the price of the penny is lowering every few years. The materials used to construct the penny could be changed to more common and cheap metals. An equally important piece of information comes from the article Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?, where Sommer states, "The mint defer to Congress, and Congress hasn't told it to abolish the penny. Lawmakers have directed the mint to study ways to make small coins more cheaply"(Sommer 3). Provided the information, the mint has tried to reach out the Congress in hopes of getting an answer, yet the Congress never made a decision. • 10. Pennies Should Be Eliminated Essay Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck. This commonly used saying is being valued less and less as the days progress. On a daily basis, thousands of people walk down the streets of busy cities. Today the majority of people state that when they pass by a penny on the ground, they don't stop to pick it up. Due to this and many other reasons penny production should cease. In society, other countries have chosen to withdraw their coins, pennies lack circulation, and they are costly to produce, leading us, as a nation, to lean towards the decision of stopping their production. Each day, around the world, countries and governments choose to make changes daily, leading citizens to believe that the use of the penny could easily be abolished. Back in the 1800's, America partook in the use of a half cent. In 1857, the government decided that it was too much of a nuisance and was not used often enough. As a nation, we chose to stop its production. After its eradication, there was no record of the people struggling to adjust to its disappearance. Citizens were able to continue making ... • 11. Penny Argumentative Essay Did you know the first penney the u.S. has ever seen was created and produced in the year 1857? The penny we know of has been in the states for 161 years. In the year 2012 there was a proposal that the United States get rid of the penny, the least valuable coin in the money system. The penny has so little value, but cost too much to make. Although the U.S. loses millions of dollars a year to the production of pennies, American pennies should not be ceased minting because of the risk of economic changes, the piece of culture they each possess and their " power in numbers". To begin with, pennies aren't the only coins that cost too much to make. According to Jeff Sommer, who wrote the article "Penny Wise,or 2.4 Cents foolish?" he states "Each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As illustrated, by Maria Story " The one–cent piece, commonly referred to as the "penny" has been apart of United States history for over two–hundred years" (Story). As can be seen, the American penny has been around for centuries. Who's to say that phasing out this coin won't affect America? To dig even deeper, Story describes how the penny has affected the U.S. " The history of the penny reveals more than just a coin–it exposes a piece of American culture. The one–cent piece has influenced our languages..." (Story). As noted, the penny has not only shaped America's culture, but the language too. Taking away the penny will tear a piece of American identity. To conclude, the penny should remain a part of U.S. economy because of its influence in American language and culture. For those that agree, with phasing out the penny they will argue that it cost moremoney to make and mint the pennies than what they're worth. However, Ted Waterhouse begs to disagree. According to Ted Waterhouse " Last week, Washington middle school hosted its annual Penny Drive... they raised over $3000 in one week" (Waterhouse). As shown, it took one week to raise $3000! Imagine how much they'll raise in two weeks or even a month. Kids would cherish even a single penny to add to their collection. However, with inflation and the increase in credit transactions, pennies are becoming ineffective. Pennies cost the government unnecessary amounts of money to produce, harshly impact the environment, and are not practical to use. Pennies waste precious taxpayer dollars every year. Pennies have costed the US government more to mint than than their face value for the past 11 years, reports CBS News, and their production cost is subsidized with taxpayer dollars. The Wall Street Journal reports that in 2016, pennies cost 1.5 cents to produce, which totals to about 46 million dollars every year. Furthermore, pennies are becoming more and more out of circulation, so the US mint must continue producing more pennies every year, only adding to the unnecessary government spending they cause. ... Although the penny has a long history in the United States and can be considered an icon, in reality it is just not feasible anymore to continue to make the penny. According the article "Give a Penny–Save the Day" written by Ted Waterhouse, it cost more than 2.4 cents to create one penny. That is double the amount the penny is worth. The penny is not beneficial anymore due to the dangerous metals released into the environment and the coin is just too expensive to produce. So why do Americans keep this unwanted coin around? According to "Livingston", "In addition, zinc itself, though in small amounts, is harmful in high doses to both humans and animals." • 20. Penny Argumentative Essay How weird is the fact that making money costs money? Not only that, but in some cases, coins cost more to make than they're economically worth! Due to this, many believe the penny should be out of production, as should the nickel, potentially. Others believe that the coin's historical value, with it being similar to a heirloom in terms of age and personal value, should be enough to keep it in production. However, when considering how expensive manufacturing can get and how often the penny is used, it's obvious getting rid of the penny is the best choice. It's a strange thought; how money costs money, or how the amount needed to make a few coins could greatly outweigh how much they're worth. This is only one of many reasons why the Canadian government is debating whether or not to get rid of the penny. Before 1982, the U.S. mint companies made the pennies with a metallic composition of 95% copper and 5% zinc. Sometime in 1982 the U.S. mint companies started to change the metallic compositions of the pennies to 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. It wasn't until 1983 did the metallic compositions of the pennies fully changeover to 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper (United, 1). But the pennies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the three possible errors that could have occurred during our experiment was the improper use of the balance. As we were trying to measure the mass for each of the light and heavy pennies the scale needed to be zeroed every time. At one point, we accidently didn't zero out the scale and had to take in account that the one or more of light pennies we measured weighed more than the others because we forgot to zero out the scale beforehand. For example, we measured a light penny with the year 1984, and measured it to be around 2.544 grams, only problem was we forgot to zero out the scale. When we measured it again it came out to be around 2.506 grams or less. Another factor is when we took the pennies off we tried to zero the scale immediately, which either caused the machine to not zero at all or cause the next penny measurement to be off. The procedure should be modified to address that the scale must be zeroed out before and after any light or heavy pennies are measured to get accurate results. The procedure also should address the need for accurate measurements and should advise the experimenter to remeasure the same light and heavy pennies again to check for any measurement errors. Another possible error that could have occurred during our experiment is after the first trial the wet pennies affected the mass and the outcome of our second trial results. This may have caused an error in measuring the volume, this would have caused the volume measured to be less than the actual volume, thus allowing the density of the pennies to increase, causing the lab results to be uneven. Another source of error has to do with the mass of the pennies. After the pennies were taken out of the graduated cylinders filled with water, there was still some water droplets left on the pennies when put on the triple beam balance. This extra weight of the water may have caused the measurement in the mass of the pennies to be more than they actually were. This outcome could have caused the density of the pennies to be increased as well, making the lab results inconstant. Any type of coating, for example rust, on the penny may affect the mass. • 31. The Importance Of Saving The Penny Are the pennies really worth it? Many countries around the world have eliminated the penny which raises the question: Should the U.S eliminate the penny? We are wasting money and time by keeping the production going so why not just stop it all now? After doing plenty of research I believe the U.S should eliminate the penny. It's about time America did something that could help us save us valuable time and money. Canada has gotten rid of the penny because of the cost to produce them and it has saved them about $11 billion per year. Imagine all of the money the U.S could save just by eliminating the useless coin. Research shows that it wastes time to produce pennies which furthers my reasoning for eliminating it. • 32. Should Pennies Be Eliminated Essay How would you feel if you could save thousands of dollars a year? You can, if you don't eliminate the penny. Canada stopped making pennies and maybe the United States will too. The debate is should we or should we not eliminate the penny. The United States should not eliminate the penny for three reasons they are helpful for charities, they're part of our American culture, and you can lose your money. To start, pennies should not be eliminated for many reasons one reason is that they are very helpful for charities. For example, Washington Middle School brought bags and jars of pennies and raised over $3,000 in one week for a charity penny drive. This shows that pennies can add up quick because they are worth so little. In addition, an eighth grader at WMS said, " He was happy to give them to someone who could use them." In others words, you can always contribute a penny to a better benefit by donating them to a greater good. Furthermore, WMS found out that there is a power in numbers, when people put them to a great benefit. For instance, when you provide your own pennies to charities they add up quickly and support a great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After that, the bronze coin is part of our language. For instance, it offers us a variety of phrases throughout time such as "a penny for our thoughts" or "penny candy"(Source 4). • 33. Argumentative Essay About Pennies To American Citizens, Chance are, you've likely used a penny in your lifetime. Everywhere you look, you'll find pennies. Between your couch cushions or on the street, pennies are everywhere. But have you ever thought, how much do pennies cost, and why do we still use them? We need to get the United States Mint to stop production of the penny and slowly take it out of circulation. This is only possible if we all band together and demand a change in our currency. Before we finally agree to do away with the penny, let's learn a little bit more about its history. "The penny, the first currency of any type authorized by the U.S. government, was initially struck in 1787, though it didn't become legal tender until 1856. Since then, more than 300 billion one–cent coins have been minted. Abraham Lincoln became the first U.S. president to adorn a coin when he was put on the penny in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of his birth (he wasn't added to the $5 bill until 1914). The Lincoln penny was also the first to include the inscription "In God We Trust" ("Should We Eliminate the Penny?") If the penny seems like an ancient artifact, that's because it is. Pennies were made over 200 years ago. Don't you think in such a fluctuating and constantly changing economy, a newer form of currency would be necessary? To put it simply,... • 34. Penny Problem A penny for your thoughts? Well, here is my two cents: the American penny is practically worthless. According to the 2014 Biennial Report to Congress as required by The Coin Modernization, Oversight, and Continuity Act of 2010 (Public Law 111–302), between 2011 and 2014, ". . . the production cost of the one–cent coin (penny) has decreased 31.1 percent to $0.0166 from $0.0241" (Report 2). While the cost of production has gone down, it still costs more to produce a single penny than that penny is worth when used. The report even admits that "There are no alternative metal compositions that reduce the manufacturing unit cost of the penny below its face value" (Report 11). So why keep it? • 35. Why Should Pennies Not Be Banned Pennies should not be manufactured anymore. Some reasons why are that people hardly use them, it is not a ban, and because they are just not important. One reason pennies should not continue to be made is because people barely ever try to pay with pennies, or do anything with pennies. In Jeff Sommers article from the New York Times, he quotes a Canadian finance minister, "Pennies take up too much space on our dressers at home".(Sommer) This quote shows people have pennies for no reason, they sit at their homes and have no use but to take up space. Jeff Sommer also quoted a government brochure that stated, "We often store them in jars, throw them away in water fountains, or refuse them as change".(Sommer) If some places don't even accept them as change, then they are very useless. Sommer also wrote, "But those who can bear to part with their pennies are being encouraged to bring them to banks for eventual melting or to donate them to charities that will presumably bring them in for melting".(Sommer) This new idea will not, or should not bother anyone's lives because people who want pennies can have them, and people who don't, can give them ... • 36. Penny Is A Waste Of Time Essay Some people are arguing that the penny is just a waste of time to make, it takes up too much space and it takes forever to count out. Some people think that they shouldn't ban the penny is a small coin and it helps us in a lot of situation at the store because if something costs a $1.50 it can come out to be $1.54 and what coin do you use to make up all those extra cents the penny. Even though this might seem crazy there is a very good explanation to this the penny costs more to make than its actual value it cost more and it takes up a lot of space. Reason one it takes up a lot of space, reason two they take too long to count. These are two reasons that on why people hate pennies. Now for some reasons on why some people love the penny. Reason one the penny is helpful in some cases like when you need to pay and the total is $1.56 you need that penny, reason two the penny is one of the few coins that can help us a lot. • 37. Foolish The Penny Do you think the penny is a waste? Is a penny saved really a penny earned? Well not much longer it isn't, people think that we should discontinue the penny from our current day system. In my eyes i see the penny as a waste of time and a waste of money. There has been talk lately about discontinuing the minting of the us penny, and after reading all four articles it's hard to say that we should keep the penny: "Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?" (Source 1), "Is the Penny Worth It?" (Source 2), "Give a penny–Save the day!" (Source 3) "The Ever–Changing penny" (Souce 4). In my opinion we should discontinue the U.S. penny because it is costing us too much to produce pennies and the cost to produce it is actually more than it's worth, many countries have already dropped the pennies and it's going just fine for them, there is already a plan for when we are going to discontinue the pennies, so we are prepared. First of all,in 2011, it cost 2.4 cents just to make a penny. "in 2011,it cost the U.S.mint more than 2.4 cents to produce a penny." (Source 4, par. 4) But the cost to produce a penny now has dropped to about 1.8 cents but it still costs more to make than it's worth. We should also get rid of the nickel to because it costs 9.4 cents to make so they are just basically losing money by the minute."In the United ... • 38. Abolishing The Penny Essay The penny, also known simply as the one–cent coin, was first made about 230 years ago in 1787. The first penny ever made was 100% copper and it was heavier and larger than the usual penny today. The design itself was suggested by the famous Benjamin Franklin ("A Brief History of the U.S. Cent"). Lately, people have talked about the idea of abolishing the penny, but others disagree. The penny should not be abolished. Granted, pennies waste time. MoneyCrasher.com had this to say: "Often, when we pay with cash at a store, the total amount doesn't end in a multiple of $0.05... [so] we have to either hand over some pennies or receive some in change" (Livingston). This information is basically stating that since the amount of total cost usually doesn't end in a multiple of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To begin, nickels cost more than pennies. An article on The Spruce says this: "[The] Mint can make 5 pennies and still lose less money than making 1 nickel" (Headley). This quoted information is basically saying that it would cost less for five pennies to be made compared to just one nickel. The cost difference is actually about 1.4 cents, which doesn't seem like much, but it may become a larger problem when the money amount adds up in the end. Furthermore, if the penny were abolished and the nation would be stuck using nickels, then the Mint would lose even more money. A popular argument for the abolishment of the penny is that it wastes the money for the Mint. This is partly true, but if the pennies were entirely eliminated, more nickels would be in demand, which would cost the Mint more. Twenty nickels, which equals a dollar, costs about $1.54 to make, compared to a dollar amount of pennies, which costs $1.26 to make. With all the pennies abolished, the number of nickels made would have to double, which would subtract more money from the Mint, leaving them with even money savings less than before ... • 39. Arguments For The Penny Go Penniless "Goodbye, Lincoln penny. You served us well but your time has passed" (Whaples). The penny has been nearly worthless for some time and its elimination has been subject to quite a large amount of controversy for the past few years. However, it may finally be time for President Lincoln to stop being minted. The penny costs about one and a half cents to make, causing inflation and making pennies seem like a waste to mint. Also, if pennies were to disappear, prices would be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel, allowing both distributors, producers, and consumers to save more money over time, not to mention the estimated $300 million lost in the time American citizens spend attempting to use pennies. Although the argument for the penny's demise is very convincing, some still believe the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These people also argue that because the penny bears the face of President Lincoln, the man who abolished slavery in the United States, it should be kept alive forever (Murphy). While these points are definitely patriotic, it is important to note that patriotism alone will not help the economy. Each penny costs about a penny and a half to make and doing without it could save taxpayers millions of dollars (Whaples) and if saving taxpayer money is not patriotic, then what is? If need be, Congress can decide to make a new one dollar coin (replacing the dollar bill with a coin might save the U.S. government an additional $500 per year)(Whaples) with Lincoln's face, and he will always be immortalized on the face of the five dollar bill.
