Differences Between Cultures And Cultures
In contemporary society, cultures from our daily lives. People adapt to their own culture and are
interested in other cultures which are different from their own. Some people think the best way to
learn about diverse cultures and traditions in the world is by wearing fashions, hairstyles, or body
jewelry from other cultures. Obviously, learning about the diverse cultures and traditions just by
exterior appearance is a partial way to learn more about different cultures. Instead, better ways to
understand various cultures and traditions in the world can be seen by looking at communication
and lifestyles.
First, a better way to learn about diverse cultures is to communicate with different people from
different cultures. This will allow you to deeply connect to their cultures. To speak with native
people, you will learn more about the traditions and your own way of speaking by combining the
different languages in each other's cultures. Regarding the English, they prefer to talk about weather
rather than personal events due to their geographical position and personality. Compared to the
English, the Chinese like to talk about their salaries and their jobs when they have a conversation.
The reason why is that the traditional Chinese culture relies on competition. If you are curious about
these two cultures, talking with native people will allow you to feel the cultures' differences
immediately. This is why people communicating with others can be confusing, because there are

Different Cultures Around The World
There are many cultures around the world, each with a unique set of characteristics. For example, I
identify myself as a Korean–American. Education and family is valued over the individual. We hold
the superstition that shaking one's leg means shaking away one's luck. As a Korean–American, we
believe that our elders should be respected. For example, when we see an elder, we bow and say
hello. Birthday celebrations for immediate family members and relatives include eating seaweed
soup to promote health. Growing up in a Korean–American household, my family did not talk and
discuss mental health. However, my family showed a lot of verbal and non–verbal affection with
one another. This is one kind of culture. Culture is denoted as "a system of values, beliefs, ways of
thinking, routines, rituals, and institutions established by a group or population ... provides ways of
looking at the world ... determines patterns of feelings and behavior in everyday life" (Brooks,
2013, p. 34). Two cultural models are used in order to categorize cultures into one group or the other.
Two Cultural Models Individualistic. This is also known as the independent model of social
systems. Many cultures in "Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand" (Brooks, 2013, p.
35) use this cultural model. Cultures that follow the individualistic model define self "in terms of
personal choices, goals, and achievements. This system is a self– or ego–centric system" (Brooks,
2013, p. 35). The individual's

Of all the countries that our world makes up, it undoubtable to state that each one has their own
particular cultural identity. This identity is unique to that country, of it containing all the
components of their culture including work, school, food, social interaction, and more. Perhaps one
of the most important aspects of culture, work, allows a platform for the most interaction between
different cultures. In the work world, it is a given that due to diversity, collaboration between people
of different cultures will happen. Whether it is because of a diverse staff of employees, business
being conducted between two countries, etc..... understanding the different cultural characteristics,
or dimensions as notable psychologist Geert Hofstede would call them, allows for good work
relationships to be strong and prevalent. Hofstede created a six dimensions apparent in every
countries, and for each dimensions for a particular country, a score is attributed showing how
prevalent that dimension is. This allows a great ability to compare and contrast cultural differences
between different regions of the world. In examining one of the two biggest countries in the world,
the United States and China, one can see great variety in their dimensional scores. In being the two
most powerful economies in the world, and relying on each other daily for trading purposes,
comparing and contrasting these two countries is rather fascinating. The United States and China

Reflection About Culture
In the world we live in, we are surrounded by hundreds of people with different backgrounds and
identities different then our own. Fresno itself, according to the Fresno County Website, says we
are one of the "most diverse counties in the state of California" (County Department). With all that
miscellany we have, we are bound to cross paths with someone who comes from a different
background then us. In this century, we are not just distinct because of the color of our skin, our
gender, or our heritage anymore. People have expanded to feelings instead of physical aspects.
Culture has expanded.
There are multiple definitions across the world for what culture means. According to the
Merriam–Webster dictionary, culture is, "the act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties
especially by education" (Merriam Webster Dictionaries). This definition explains the way people
form beliefs from the knowledge they are taught. As we grow up, school is playing a vital role in
what we should accustom too. Anthropologists on the other hand have a different interpretation on
culture. They spend a grand amount of time doing research taking different approaches to define it.
They define culture as, "the shared set of (implicit and explicit) value, ideas, concepts, and rules of
behavior that allow a social group to function and perpetuate itself" (Hudelson). People interact with
what is around them and eventually start imitating what their peers are doing. This is how behaviors,

Culture : A Cultural Perspective Essay
The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one's life. From physical objects to
different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people
distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar
interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the
University of Minnesota, "culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions,
cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of
socialization." From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come
together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a
culture group while also distinguishing those of another group." Culture is one of the things that
sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural,
but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this
country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where
many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.
This is why we have so many options on how to go about doing things. The most common thing
that comes to mind is food. There are so many types of food to be had. On a Monday, an individual
might be in a hurry and choose to have breakfast at McDonald's. that same day, he or

The Differences Of Culture And Culture Essay
The Differences of Culture
Culture is part of each of us; its characteristics are defined by a combination of multiple conditions
such as language, religion, places, people, lifestyle, etc. People in different societies have different
cultures, sometimes they can be significantly different, but they can also have similarities. We are all
surrounded by people of different backgrounds, religion and culture. This expands our knowledge
and by being surrounded of different cultures, it let us to think with an open mind accepting our
differences, but also celebrating our similarities. Some of us might have a greater knowledge in
this subject; some of us have live between a mix of cultures. People that have emigrated from a
different country know how different cultures can be. I believe every one of us at some point
have seen the differences of cultures, some might know little about them, but at least everyone can
be identified with their own culture. To know who we are and what our culture represents is
important, it is also important to expand our knowledge in cultures from people that surround us
because we are in a diverse world where millions of people live differently and it might surprise us
how different but also how similar we all are.
Culture is powerful; it can shape our perceptions, attributions, judgment, and ideas of our self and of
others. It is one of the most important attributes in our lives. We carry this since a very young age;
we look up to our parents, our

Cultures and People of The World Essay
The people of the world speak approximately 250 different languages across countries; they dress in
different ways and eat different foods. Societies share basic institutions such as government, the
educational system and religious institutions. Therefore, culture is a learned system of shared beliefs
and habits of doing activities that guide a person`s daily behavior.
In this essay, I will be comparing the cultural dimensions of Japanese culture with that of the culture
of my country, India. I will be comparing the four cultural dimensions of the Power Distance,
Uncertainty Avoidance, Long–Term Orientation (LTO)/Short–Term Orientation (STO) and
Masculinity/ Femininity between these countries.

Indians adjust and they do not feel uncomfortable or the need to take actions when uncertainty
occurs. Japan scores 92, as it is the highest uncertainty avoiding country. Japan is always threatened
by natural disasters; hence they learned to prepare themselves against unexpected situations. They
follow strict laws and procedures and have a strong sense of nationalism. Even in business,
managers prefer facts and figures before making decisions.
Long–Term Orientation(LTO)/Short–Term Orientation(STO)
This dimension relates to the fact that how people need to realize not everything that happens
around us can be explained. In societies with LTO, people believe an explanation is not required
as it is complicated to understand the intricacy of life. In societies with STO, people have a keen
desire to explain everything. India scores 51, in preference towards long term culture. In India,
religious and philosophical thoughts are ruled by 'karma'. They favor religious thoughts because the
nations dominate religion; Hinduism is more of a philosophy of ideas, views and mysterious beliefs.
Japan scores 88, one of the highest long–term oriented society. They believe in 'doing the best in
one`s lifetime' and are guided by those virtues. Even Managers are future oriented and strive for long
term goals and value investments.
Masculinity/ Femininity
This dimension measures gender in a culture and the distribution of roles

The Existence of Different Types of Cultures
Every society has a culture, in fact, every human being is cultured. In our daily usage of the word
'culture', we often just refer it as a custom or tradition of certain group of people, or else the higher
desirable quality we can acquire after paying a hard effort such as playing piano. However the
definition of culture is not as simple as that but it refers to countless aspects of life which include
every simple elements at whole (Linton, 1945). In general, the social scientists often refer to the
Tylor's definition of culture when defining culture: "Culture... is that complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, arts, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man
as a member of society" (Tylor, 1958, p....show more content...
Hence, cultural diffusion could be seen being employed by borrowing or replacing the recognised
shared customs. Yet, it is created spontaneously within the dominant culture in other words
(Williams, 1990). The third type of the culture is counterculture. Literately, it is a culture where the
values, practice and lifestyle are against the social norms or those establish mainstream culture.
Obvious difference was noted as compared to dominant and subculture, counterculture has more
freedom and portrayed as rebellious. According to Yinger (1982), power, reciprocity and culture are
the base of the social order that leads to the derivation of counterculture from the dominant normative
culture. Clark (2003) too, emphasized that it is the deviation from norms. Counterculture more
readily to occur under circumstances that narrowing the sense of belonging to a cognate group, a
society, an identity group, or a nation. Those who practice counterculture set up their own standard
and manner which harden when it is defy by the outsiders of the group ( Calvert & Calvert, 1992).
"A countercultural movement is both behavioral and symbolic" (Yinger, 1982, p. 23). For instance,
during the 1960s, the hippie counterculture has blossomed throughout the entire United States. They
established their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced

Different Cultures, Different Essay
Every society and culture has different ways of interpreting and defining occurrences by the way
their own culture or society functions. "A society's culture, consists of whatever it is one has to
know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to its members"(Geertz 242). The rituals,
customs, ethics and morals that are attributed to the cultures have caused these differences. To
understand how the people of one culture interpret a situation or event, one must evaluate the
attributes that a culture has. The criteria that an event is based on changes as one culture applies
their own ideas to the given situation. Heroism and violation are two concepts that are easily
misinterpreted depending on culture's ideals. Since cultures...show more content...
What tripped Cohen up, and with him the whole, ancient pattern of social and economic
relationships within which he functioned, was a confusion of tongues. (Geertz 241)
Geertz explains that the reason for the confusion, and the different interpretations of the event that
took place is a simple misunderstanding that when took place in clashing cultures with different
views, both striving to claim the situation in their own contexts became a somewhat humorous event.
This conflict between cultures causes a view of a person to change depending on which point of
reference they are being seen from.
In Ernest Hemingway's "Indian Camp," the conflict between cultures again cause a difference of
views of the father. The concept of heroism and violation becomes the issue of conflict. The father
or doctor is considered a hero or a violator of the Indian woman depending on the culture viewing
him. From the father's culture, he is viewed as a hero for his actions at the Indian camp. His
actions are viewed as heroic under the circumstances of his procedure. Because of the culture of the
Indian people, having a white man, an outsider of the tribe, come in and operate on an Indian
woman is viewed as obscene and a violation of the woman not to

"No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive." This quote was stated by the preeminent leader,
Mahatma Gandhi. Every culture that exists are unique and significant because of their vast
traditions and beliefs. The extent of one's culture informs the way one views others and the world.
Throughout the stories, "Where World's Collide", "An Indian Father's Plea", and the "Willie Lynch
letter" each culture presented was controlled by another culture. Each character was expected to
adapt themselves to a whole new culture, leaving their traditions hidden. It was portrayed in the story
that the dominating culture wanted to remain dominant as they adapt others to their traditions and
principles. The authors of these stories were able to express themselves through imagery as they
painted a picture for the readers to relate to, appealling to their human senses.
In the story, "Where World's Collide", Pico Iyer guides us through the various cultures in LAX as
"they [came] out, dazed, disoriented, heads still partly in the clouds, bodies still several time

Cultural Differences in Communication Essay
The term "culture" refers to the complex accumulation of knowledge, folklore, language, rules,
rituals, habits, lifestyles, attitudes, beliefs, and customs that link and provide a general identity to a
group of people. Cultures take a long time to develop. There are many things that establish identity
give meaning to life, define what one becomes, and how one should behave. Distribution and
exercise of power shape attitudes towards authority. How people sustain themselves economically,
and how they manage to obtain the necessities of life, determines assigned roles of individuals and
the relationships among them. Physical surroundings of people help define the nature, intensity, and

It can be terrifying to deal with other people if one does not know what to expect. There is often fear
surrounding different cultures, we wonder what manners are acceptable. Is there something that will
offend another from a decidedly different culture?
The way people communicate varies considerably between, and within, cultures and different norms
regarding the appropriate level of assertiveness in communicating can add to cultural
misunderstandings.
One aspect of communication style is language usage, across cultures, some phrases and words are
used in different ways. Additionally, body language ornonverbal communication is an essential part
of how people communicate, and there are differences from culture to culture. Hand and arm
gestures, touch, and eye contact or lack thereof, are a few of the aspects of nonverbal communication.
Another aspect of communication style is the amount of importance given to non–verbal
communication. Non–verbal communication includes facial expressions and gestures, personal
distance, and sense of time. It is no surprise that people have difficulties understanding and
communicating with one another due to different cultural customs and experiences, and these
differences cause miscommunication.
Communication is a complex system of comprehensive interaction where meaning is

from many people in the world today. But what factors contribute the identification with culture and

values, religion in the family, and the origin of your family. At thepresent time the people of the

Secondly, family values also contribute to the identity of a culture and a nation. The essay "The
Way to Rainy Mountain" written by N. Scott Momaday, the writer want to be with his
grandmother. She is a way to his past and his roots. The grandmother was a teacher to her
grandson. "My grandmother had a reverence for the sun, a holy regard that now is all but gone
out of mankind. There was a wariness in her, and an ancient awe." The writer had a respect and
thought that his grandmother was the only way back to his roots. The writers view of family is
very strong because he uses a myth, which most Native Americans use to tells stories and teach
their young of their past. Maxine Hong Kingston wrote an essay called "The Woman Warrior"
which deals with the Chinese culture, and their view of woman having little significance to that of
the men. During the story she writes of the of her going to school and it only being "good for her
future husbands, and not her own."(p.191) This view of family values by Kingston is that of a male
dominated society that woman will never have any say. Another example of

environment and the relationships between animate and inanimate objects. This study shows that the
visual focuses of the two different cultures can and are very different. Another study was done with
Chinese students instead of Japanese students. The students were given all sorts of situations to

in support of an idea and weaker arguments opposing it, the Asian students had a tendency to favor
the weaker opposing argument by decreasing their support, while American students actually

How Balancing Two Different Cultures
Balancing two different cultures is a thing that most people from immigrant and/or strong culturally,
traditionally rooted families have come accustom to. Over the years they have learned about things
that they should or should not do when dealing with a certain culture. For instance, someone who
comes from a very conservative family doesn't wear revealing clothes, unless they are out with their
friends and know that their family won't see them. On contrast people, who don't have more than one
culture might not understand why you cover up so much in front of your parents. There's a thing
that most people don't understand about people who deal with two different cultures. People with a
split culture have to make their own mold, so to say; they have to learn from their own and others
experiences to conform to a certain norm. Since different cultures have different social norms, you
can't behave unacceptably without being judged. People, who have never dealt with diverse
communities, especially don't understand why people act differently when they're around unalike
people. For example, my friends never understood why my parent didn't allow me to go to places in
high school such as football games, dances or even to my friends' houses. They didn't understand
that my family was very conservative; however I don't blame them for not knowing, since they
haven't experienced any diversity by living in a predominantly white area.
The issue of balancing between cultures is actually

Differences in Cultures
Cultures are a complicated characteristic to understand. Living in the United States all of my life I
never truly understood other cultures. When I would see people from other cultures come into
my work or see them at school I thought they were bizarre. Last summer I went overseas to
England, Ireland, and Wales. There I observed that the customs overseas are very different. One
facet I noticed was their alcohol consumption. In the United States the law says you have to be
twenty one or older to consume alcohol. In Europe the legal drinking age is suppose to be
eighteen, but I found that as long as you have money and can see over the bar you are able to
purchase alcohol. I assumed that since they are able...show more content...
This course has taught me about other cultures by showing me our differences and similarities. One
of the cultural differences I find the most interesting is marriage.
In the United States, the most common type of marriage is monogamy. I was taught that monogamy
was the only true marriage and that marriage was done out of the love two people have for each
other. In taking this course, I found out that marriage is different in many cultures. Other types of
marriages I have been educated in are: Polygamy, Levirate, Sororate, Women marrying Women, and
Women marrying Ghost. I have learned some of the attractive and unattractive aspects of these types
of marriages. For instance, Polygamy. Polygyny is supported in the Kapauku of western New
Guinea and a culture that supports Polyandry is the eastern Inuit. Some people feel that polygamy
would be ideal for the United States. The attraction aspect behind this is that it would cause the
spouses not to have to work as long or as much. It would also assure that the families would have
an ample amount of income due to having more than just two people supplying the income. An
unappealing aspect is that the women or men, depending on whether it was Polygyny or Polyandry,
could become jealous of each other. Another unappealing aspect is that a man or women must be
wealthy in order to be able to afford polygamy, something most people in the United States are not.

Comparing Cultures

Comparing Cultures
When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily
defined as the social behavior and normality's found in human societies. It can also be easily made
up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out
framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are
both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how
we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table,
how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)...show

In people, culture must be learned through experiences. For most countries, learned behaviors are
passed down from one generation to the next. The purpose behind this is on the grounds that
culture isn 't natural like in creatures because they are not conceived with it. People will begin to
get their way of life during childbirth and it takes numerous years to take in the way of life like
how to talk the dialect and comply with the rules that everyone must follow, that is the reason it is
said we should respect their elders.
The two countries that we are going to compare are India and China. The greatest contrast among
Indian China is the level of development in both nations. Advancement can be seeing more in India
than in China and the struck me the most. There could be many variables causing this distinction. To
begin with, let 's examine the differences in the government of meat country. Since the meaning of
time, the Chinese government is continuing to do things their way heavily influencing what happens
in the country. They have inumerous laws that directly or indirectly cause a standstill with
innovation. The majority of the things our state possessed in China bus to begin something intends

Conversely, Indian government advances development by

Essay Different Cultures

  • 1. Differences Between Cultures And Cultures In contemporary society, cultures from our daily lives. People adapt to their own culture and are interested in other cultures which are different from their own. Some people think the best way to learn about diverse cultures and traditions in the world is by wearing fashions, hairstyles, or body jewelry from other cultures. Obviously, learning about the diverse cultures and traditions just by exterior appearance is a partial way to learn more about different cultures. Instead, better ways to understand various cultures and traditions in the world can be seen by looking at communication and lifestyles. First, a better way to learn about diverse cultures is to communicate with different people from different cultures. This will allow you to deeply connect to their cultures. To speak with native people, you will learn more about the traditions and your own way of speaking by combining the different languages in each other's cultures. Regarding the English, they prefer to talk about weather rather than personal events due to their geographical position and personality. Compared to the English, the Chinese like to talk about their salaries and their jobs when they have a conversation. The reason why is that the traditional Chinese culture relies on competition. If you are curious about these two cultures, talking with native people will allow you to feel the cultures' differences immediately. This is why people communicating with others can be confusing, because there are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Different Cultures Around The World There are many cultures around the world, each with a unique set of characteristics. For example, I identify myself as a Korean–American. Education and family is valued over the individual. We hold the superstition that shaking one's leg means shaking away one's luck. As a Korean–American, we believe that our elders should be respected. For example, when we see an elder, we bow and say hello. Birthday celebrations for immediate family members and relatives include eating seaweed soup to promote health. Growing up in a Korean–American household, my family did not talk and discuss mental health. However, my family showed a lot of verbal and non–verbal affection with one another. This is one kind of culture. Culture is denoted as "a system of values, beliefs, ways of thinking, routines, rituals, and institutions established by a group or population ... provides ways of looking at the world ... determines patterns of feelings and behavior in everyday life" (Brooks, 2013, p. 34). Two cultural models are used in order to categorize cultures into one group or the other. Two Cultural Models Individualistic. This is also known as the independent model of social systems. Many cultures in "Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand" (Brooks, 2013, p. 35) use this cultural model. Cultures that follow the individualistic model define self "in terms of personal choices, goals, and achievements. This system is a self– or ego–centric system" (Brooks, 2013, p. 35). The individual's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Of all the countries that our world makes up, it undoubtable to state that each one has their own particular cultural identity. This identity is unique to that country, of it containing all the components of their culture including work, school, food, social interaction, and more. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of culture, work, allows a platform for the most interaction between different cultures. In the work world, it is a given that due to diversity, collaboration between people of different cultures will happen. Whether it is because of a diverse staff of employees, business being conducted between two countries, etc..... understanding the different cultural characteristics, or dimensions as notable psychologist Geert Hofstede would call them, allows for good work relationships to be strong and prevalent. Hofstede created a six dimensions apparent in every countries, and for each dimensions for a particular country, a score is attributed showing how prevalent that dimension is. This allows a great ability to compare and contrast cultural differences between different regions of the world. In examining one of the two biggest countries in the world, the United States and China, one can see great variety in their dimensional scores. In being the two most powerful economies in the world, and relying on each other daily for trading purposes, comparing and contrasting these two countries is rather fascinating. The United States and China have more differences than Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflection About Culture In the world we live in, we are surrounded by hundreds of people with different backgrounds and identities different then our own. Fresno itself, according to the Fresno County Website, says we are one of the "most diverse counties in the state of California" (County Department). With all that miscellany we have, we are bound to cross paths with someone who comes from a different background then us. In this century, we are not just distinct because of the color of our skin, our gender, or our heritage anymore. People have expanded to feelings instead of physical aspects. Culture has expanded. There are multiple definitions across the world for what culture means. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, culture is, "the act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties especially by education" (Merriam Webster Dictionaries). This definition explains the way people form beliefs from the knowledge they are taught. As we grow up, school is playing a vital role in what we should accustom too. Anthropologists on the other hand have a different interpretation on culture. They spend a grand amount of time doing research taking different approaches to define it. They define culture as, "the shared set of (implicit and explicit) value, ideas, concepts, and rules of behavior that allow a social group to function and perpetuate itself" (Hudelson). People interact with what is around them and eventually start imitating what their peers are doing. This is how behaviors, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Culture : A Cultural Perspective Essay The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one's life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, "culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization." From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group." Culture is one of the things that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup. This is why we have so many options on how to go about doing things. The most common thing that comes to mind is food. There are so many types of food to be had. On a Monday, an individual might be in a hurry and choose to have breakfast at McDonald's. that same day, he or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Differences Of Culture And Culture Essay The Differences of Culture Culture is part of each of us; its characteristics are defined by a combination of multiple conditions such as language, religion, places, people, lifestyle, etc. People in different societies have different cultures, sometimes they can be significantly different, but they can also have similarities. We are all surrounded by people of different backgrounds, religion and culture. This expands our knowledge and by being surrounded of different cultures, it let us to think with an open mind accepting our differences, but also celebrating our similarities. Some of us might have a greater knowledge in this subject; some of us have live between a mix of cultures. People that have emigrated from a different country know how different cultures can be. I believe every one of us at some point have seen the differences of cultures, some might know little about them, but at least everyone can be identified with their own culture. To know who we are and what our culture represents is important, it is also important to expand our knowledge in cultures from people that surround us because we are in a diverse world where millions of people live differently and it might surprise us how different but also how similar we all are. Culture is powerful; it can shape our perceptions, attributions, judgment, and ideas of our self and of others. It is one of the most important attributes in our lives. We carry this since a very young age; we look up to our parents, our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Cultures and People of The World Essay The people of the world speak approximately 250 different languages across countries; they dress in different ways and eat different foods. Societies share basic institutions such as government, the educational system and religious institutions. Therefore, culture is a learned system of shared beliefs and habits of doing activities that guide a person`s daily behavior. In this essay, I will be comparing the cultural dimensions of Japanese culture with that of the culture of my country, India. I will be comparing the four cultural dimensions of the Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long–Term Orientation (LTO)/Short–Term Orientation (STO) and Masculinity/ Femininity between these countries. Power Distance Index(PDI) This dimension...show more content... Indians adjust and they do not feel uncomfortable or the need to take actions when uncertainty occurs. Japan scores 92, as it is the highest uncertainty avoiding country. Japan is always threatened by natural disasters; hence they learned to prepare themselves against unexpected situations. They follow strict laws and procedures and have a strong sense of nationalism. Even in business, managers prefer facts and figures before making decisions. Long–Term Orientation(LTO)/Short–Term Orientation(STO) This dimension relates to the fact that how people need to realize not everything that happens around us can be explained. In societies with LTO, people believe an explanation is not required as it is complicated to understand the intricacy of life. In societies with STO, people have a keen desire to explain everything. India scores 51, in preference towards long term culture. In India, religious and philosophical thoughts are ruled by 'karma'. They favor religious thoughts because the nations dominate religion; Hinduism is more of a philosophy of ideas, views and mysterious beliefs. Japan scores 88, one of the highest long–term oriented society. They believe in 'doing the best in one`s lifetime' and are guided by those virtues. Even Managers are future oriented and strive for long term goals and value investments. Masculinity/ Femininity This dimension measures gender in a culture and the distribution of roles Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Existence of Different Types of Cultures Every society has a culture, in fact, every human being is cultured. In our daily usage of the word 'culture', we often just refer it as a custom or tradition of certain group of people, or else the higher desirable quality we can acquire after paying a hard effort such as playing piano. However the definition of culture is not as simple as that but it refers to countless aspects of life which include every simple elements at whole (Linton, 1945). In general, the social scientists often refer to the Tylor's definition of culture when defining culture: "Culture... is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, arts, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society" (Tylor, 1958, p....show more content... Hence, cultural diffusion could be seen being employed by borrowing or replacing the recognised shared customs. Yet, it is created spontaneously within the dominant culture in other words (Williams, 1990). The third type of the culture is counterculture. Literately, it is a culture where the values, practice and lifestyle are against the social norms or those establish mainstream culture. Obvious difference was noted as compared to dominant and subculture, counterculture has more freedom and portrayed as rebellious. According to Yinger (1982), power, reciprocity and culture are the base of the social order that leads to the derivation of counterculture from the dominant normative culture. Clark (2003) too, emphasized that it is the deviation from norms. Counterculture more readily to occur under circumstances that narrowing the sense of belonging to a cognate group, a society, an identity group, or a nation. Those who practice counterculture set up their own standard and manner which harden when it is defy by the outsiders of the group ( Calvert & Calvert, 1992). "A countercultural movement is both behavioral and symbolic" (Yinger, 1982, p. 23). For instance, during the 1960s, the hippie counterculture has blossomed throughout the entire United States. The problem was what kind of food I should try and won't be too disappointed? So I called my brother who has numerous experiences in food. My boyfriend's dish also looked amazing, he really loved it. I didn't try because I don't like the taste of lamb. Soon after we both cleaned out the plate and left no room for desserts. We had to promise each other that we would come back again next time. After that, I called my brother and thank him for the wonderful suggestion. He told me little bit about Greek culture on food. He said his Greek friend told him that food is very important in Greek, Greek people take food very seriously. • 11. Different Cultures, Different Essay Every society and culture has different ways of interpreting and defining occurrences by the way their own culture or society functions. "A society's culture, consists of whatever it is one has to know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to its members"(Geertz 242). The rituals, customs, ethics and morals that are attributed to the cultures have caused these differences. To understand how the people of one culture interpret a situation or event, one must evaluate the attributes that a culture has. The criteria that an event is based on changes as one culture applies their own ideas to the given situation. What tripped Cohen up, and with him the whole, ancient pattern of social and economic relationships within which he functioned, was a confusion of tongues. (Geertz 241) Geertz explains that the reason for the confusion, and the different interpretations of the event that took place is a simple misunderstanding that when took place in clashing cultures with different views, both striving to claim the situation in their own contexts became a somewhat humorous event. This conflict between cultures causes a view of a person to change depending on which point of reference they are being seen from. In Ernest Hemingway's "Indian Camp," the conflict between cultures again cause a difference of views of the father. The concept of heroism and violation becomes the issue of conflict. The father or doctor is considered a hero or a violator of the Indian woman depending on the culture viewing him. From the father's culture, he is viewed as a hero for his actions at the Indian camp. His actions are viewed as heroic under the circumstances of his procedure. Because of the culture of the Indian people, having a white man, an outsider of the tribe, come in and operate on an Indian woman is viewed as obscene and a violation of the woman not to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. "No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive." This quote was stated by the preeminent leader, Mahatma Gandhi. Every culture that exists are unique and significant because of their vast traditions and beliefs. The extent of one's culture informs the way one views others and the world. Throughout the stories, "Where World's Collide", "An Indian Father's Plea", and the "Willie Lynch letter" each culture presented was controlled by another culture. Each character was expected to adapt themselves to a whole new culture, leaving their traditions hidden. It was portrayed in the story that the dominating culture wanted to remain dominant as they adapt others to their traditions and principles. The authors of these stories were able to express themselves through imagery as they painted a picture for the readers to relate to, appealling to their human senses. In the story, "Where World's Collide", Pico Iyer guides us through the various cultures in LAX as "they [came] out, dazed, disoriented, heads still partly in the clouds, bodies still several time zones––away, [as] they step into the Promised Land." From the perspective of an Indian origin immigrant visiting the United States, Pico Iyer witnessed signs of discrimination, sterotypes, and cultural indifferences. "They have already, perhaps, visited the restroom where someone has written "Yes on Proposition 187. Mexicans go home." Cultural Differences in Communication Essay The term "culture" refers to the complex accumulation of knowledge, folklore, language, rules, rituals, habits, lifestyles, attitudes, beliefs, and customs that link and provide a general identity to a group of people. Cultures take a long time to develop. There are many things that establish identity give meaning to life, define what one becomes, and how one should behave. It can be terrifying to deal with other people if one does not know what to expect. There is often fear surrounding different cultures, we wonder what manners are acceptable. Is there something that will offend another from a decidedly different culture? The way people communicate varies considerably between, and within, cultures and different norms regarding the appropriate level of assertiveness in communicating can add to cultural misunderstandings. One aspect of communication style is language usage, across cultures, some phrases and words are used in different ways. Additionally, body language ornonverbal communication is an essential part of how people communicate, and there are differences from culture to culture. Hand and arm gestures, touch, and eye contact or lack thereof, are a few of the aspects of nonverbal communication. Another aspect of communication style is the amount of importance given to non–verbal communication. Non–verbal communication includes facial expressions and gestures, personal distance, and sense of time. It is no surprise that people have difficulties understanding and communicating with one another due to different cultural customs and experiences, and these differences cause miscommunication. The various factors that define a culture are the way people see a cultures attitude, family values, religion in the family, and the origin of your family. At thepresent time the people of the world are very stereotypical, this is one of the many ways to misinterpret people of a different culture . To best understand a culture you should take the time to absorb their way of life to really appreciate their culture. The first factor, which contributes to the identification with a culture and a nation, is...show more content... Secondly, family values also contribute to the identity of a culture and a nation. The essay "The Way to Rainy Mountain" written by N. Scott Momaday, the writer want to be with his grandmother. She is a way to his past and his roots. The grandmother was a teacher to her grandson. "My grandmother had a reverence for the sun, a holy regard that now is all but gone out of mankind. There was a wariness in her, and an ancient awe." The writer had a respect and thought that his grandmother was the only way back to his roots. The writers view of family is very strong because he uses a myth, which most Native Americans use to tells stories and teach their young of their past. Maxine Hong Kingston wrote an essay called "The Woman Warrior" which deals with the Chinese culture, and their view of woman having little significance to that of the men. During the story she writes of the of her going to school and it only being "good for her future husbands, and not her own."(p.191) This view of family values by Kingston is that of a male dominated society that woman will never have any say. Another example of 3 family values is in my family. I have been taught to attend church every Sunday. When in the future I have my family I will instill this value into my family values. This has made me a better person. Many people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Culture can shape us as individuals in many different ways. Things such as gender and race play a big part on shaping us as individuals. Culture shapes how we as people view world. Webster's dictionary defines culture as "The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior that depends upon man's capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. It is also the customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of a racial, religious or social group" (Webster). Studies show that people that are of different cultures perceive and see things much differently, this is most likely because of how theirculture shaped how they view and act with the world. I believe that a lot of people sometimes overlook how...show more content... In one study US students from the US and Japanese students from Japan were asked to describe an animated underwater scene where one large fish is swimming amongst a school of smaller fish. The American students had a tendency to only report the large fish and ignore all other small objects and detail. Meanwhile the Japanese students had tended to describe all of the details of the background environment and the relationships between animate and inanimate objects. This study shows that the visual focuses of the two different cultures can and are very different. Another study was done with Chinese students instead of Japanese students. The students were given all sorts of situations to resolve. This study found that the Chinese students were "less eager" to resolve any contradictions in a plethora of situations, however the American students were quick to come up with ideas for a solution for all the situations that were presented, and everybody agreed on them to resolve a conflict. Another study where the individual contributors were given a topic with strong arguments in support of an idea and weaker arguments opposing it, the Asian students had a tendency to favor the weaker opposing argument by decreasing their support, while American students actually increased their efforts of the project to support the strong argument. There have been tons more studies which look at the different views of many different cultures, including classification Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. How Balancing Two Different Cultures Balancing two different cultures is a thing that most people from immigrant and/or strong culturally, traditionally rooted families have come accustom to. Over the years they have learned about things that they should or should not do when dealing with a certain culture. For instance, someone who comes from a very conservative family doesn't wear revealing clothes, unless they are out with their friends and know that their family won't see them. On contrast people, who don't have more than one culture might not understand why you cover up so much in front of your parents. There's a thing that most people don't understand about people who deal with two different cultures. People with a split culture have to make their own mold, so to say; they have to learn from their own and others experiences to conform to a certain norm. Since different cultures have different social norms, you can't behave unacceptably without being judged. People, who have never dealt with diverse communities, especially don't understand why people act differently when they're around unalike people. For example, my friends never understood why my parent didn't allow me to go to places in high school such as football games, dances or even to my friends' houses. They didn't understand that my family was very conservative; however I don't blame them for not knowing, since they haven't experienced any diversity by living in a predominantly white area. The issue of balancing between cultures is actually Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Differences in Cultures Essay Differences in Cultures Cultures are a complicated characteristic to understand. Living in the United States all of my life I never truly understood other cultures. When I would see people from other cultures come into my work or see them at school I thought they were bizarre. Last summer I went overseas to England, Ireland, and Wales. There I observed that the customs overseas are very different. One facet I noticed was their alcohol consumption. In the United States the law says you have to be twenty one or older to consume alcohol. In Europe the legal drinking age is suppose to be eighteen, but I found that as long as you have money and can see over the bar you are able to purchase alcohol. I assumed that since they are able...show more content... This course has taught me about other cultures by showing me our differences and similarities. One of the cultural differences I find the most interesting is marriage. In the United States, the most common type of marriage is monogamy. I was taught that monogamy was the only true marriage and that marriage was done out of the love two people have for each other. In taking this course, I found out that marriage is different in many cultures. Other types of marriages I have been educated in are: Polygamy, Levirate, Sororate, Women marrying Women, and Women marrying Ghost. I have learned some of the attractive and unattractive aspects of these types of marriages. For instance, Polygamy. Polygyny is supported in the Kapauku of western New Guinea and a culture that supports Polyandry is the eastern Inuit. Some people feel that polygamy would be ideal for the United States. The attraction aspect behind this is that it would cause the spouses not to have to work as long or as much. It would also assure that the families would have an ample amount of income due to having more than just two people supplying the income. An unappealing aspect is that the women or men, depending on whether it was Polygyny or Polyandry, could become jealous of each other. Another unappealing aspect is that a man or women must be wealthy in order to be able to afford polygamy, something most people in the United States are not. • 20. Comparing And Contrasting Cultures Essay Tyler King COL–299–N13 Comparing Cultures October 21, 2017 Comparing Cultures When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily defined as the social behavior and normality's found in human societies. It can also be easily made up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table, how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)...show more content... In people, culture must be learned through experiences. For most countries, learned behaviors are passed down from one generation to the next. The purpose behind this is on the grounds that culture isn 't natural like in creatures because they are not conceived with it. People will begin to get their way of life during childbirth and it takes numerous years to take in the way of life like how to talk the dialect and comply with the rules that everyone must follow, that is the reason it is said we should respect their elders. The two countries that we are going to compare are India and China. The greatest contrast among Indian China is the level of development in both nations. Advancement can be seeing more in India than in China and the struck me the most. There could be many variables causing this distinction. To begin with, let 's examine the differences in the government of meat country. Since the meaning of time, the Chinese government is continuing to do things their way heavily influencing what happens in the country. They have inumerous laws that directly or indirectly cause a standstill with innovation. The majority of the things our state possessed in China bus to begin something intends to first get every one of the clearances from the government, which is extremely troublesome. Conversely, Indian government advances development by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
