1. What are the conventions of film
openings?
By Amy Coker
2. Opening of Unknown
The openings of the films I watched
immediately I was introduced to the
production companies, distributors
and directors at the beginning of the
opening.
It then leads on to introducing
the actors and actresses
starring in the film.
3. After all the companies, and actors etc. have been
introduced, the wide shot of clouds has been gradually
moved to a mid shot of a window in a cabin window where a
man is sitting.
In a sense this allows a calm and gradual effect to the
introduction of the film instead of an immediate change in
music and tone.
4. In many film openings for example Physco, there has been a use
of the classic Hollywood opening when a long range to mid shot
is used. This highlights significant to the audience as they realise
what's through the window is important to the film.
The film uses very slow, daunting music whilst the long range
to mid shot is being used, this may suggest to the audience
that something is going to occur.
5. The Taking Of Pelham
For example in The Taking Of Pelham setting and
location is very important, as it sets expectations from
the audience.
In the opening of the film uses three important shots that were used
to identify something to the audience. A Wide shot of New York city
was shown as well as a shot of people walking. A shot of a man was
used in a subway who may be portrayed as a criminal, putting all
these shots together identifies that millions of people may be in
danger as this particular man has been shown which indicates an
event is going to occur.
