Part 4
Read the text and answer questions 25 to 34.
The environment on Earth has worsened over the years. The actions of mankind such as open burning and
heavy industrial production have resulted in toxic waste emissions, landfill space problems and pollution. Hence,
we need to take steps to preserve our environment from further damage.
As responsible citizens of Earth, you can take small steps to save the environment. Firstly, if you have a
garden, you can make compost to encourage better plant growth. You can make compost with kitchen scraps. It is
a good idea to plant trees in your garden as they absorb carbon dioxide and also provide shade. Try to plant native
plants as they need less watering.
Another measure is to turn off electrical appliances when not in use. Did you know that television sets use up
to 30 per cent of power consumption while they are turned on? Remember to turn off the lights when not in use.
This will help you save money on your monthly utility bills as less electricity is used.
Windows are also a good measure of temperature control. When the weather is hot, open your windows to let
the breeze in. Fresh air will keep you cool and remove stale air in the house. Furthermore, good air circulation
throughout your home saves the cost of running an air-conditioner. The air in the house will be kept cool, thus
you do not need to install an air-conditioner.
Next, try to recycle as far as possible. Have four separate recycling bins for sorting out material like paper,
glass, metal and organic waste. Make sure the contents end up in the correct recycling bins. It is best to avoid
using disposable products, such as plates, cups, napkins and cutlery. Use reusable towels and dishwashing cloths
in place of paper towels and disposable dish sponges.
If you have a printer at home, use recycled paper for your printer. One way to save paper is to print on both
sides. Any old scrap of paper can be used as note paper for taking down phone messages. Make it a habit to turn
off the computer every night by removing the plug from the wall socket. By doing so, you will reduce any risk of
overheating and short circuit that can cause fires.
We should try to recycle and reuse materials in our daily lives. It is good to adopt the 3Rs - recycle, reuse and
reduce - to cut down the amount of waste discarded. In the long run, this will help us save natural resources,
energy and landfill space. Our actions can help to reduce waste and preserve conditions on Earth.

gap (35 - 40). There aretwo extrasentences which youdo not needto use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A- H) on your answersheet.
Julie: My grandparents will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary next year. We are
planning to surprise them with gifts and a party.
I wish I could send them on a vacation. They really deserve it. There's only one problem — I
don't have enough in my savings to bear the cost of their trip.
Jane: Why don't you ask your parents for some money?
Julie: I don't think I want to do that. They have always been against borrowing and lending money.
Amy: Why don't you take up a part-time job or ask your neighbours if they have any work for you?
Julie: That's a good idea. I love children and I would be very happy getting paid to babysit my little
cousins. Better still, I could also help Mr Tan, my neighbour, with the gardening,
since
Rob: You could have a book sale. I am sure many of our friends who love reading
would be interested to buy the books at a much cheaper price.
Julie: I could have a jumble sale to sell things that I don't use any more, like my bags, clothes and even
toys.
Jane: There are so many ways to make money if you really think about it.
Krish: Julie, why don't you try to save more of your monthly allowance? Stop eating at fast food joints
after school and tuition. Eat at home and bring packed food from home. Also stop buying
branded clothes and shoes. Do you know how much you could save in this way? More
importantly, you would be able to save enough to get the gift for your grandparents.
Julie: Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it.
All: You're welcome.
