3. Some Common Pitfalls
Standardized tubing size / weight / grade / threads / design
“We designed our tubing in 1999 & always run 3-1/2” 13.3# J-55 VAM”
Means: They never review the standard unless a failure occurs!
Designed casing strings in Drilling department without
considering the impact on tubing design
“We design our casing strings to MMS standards”
Means: Their Completions Engineer needs to fit some tubing in the well!!
Their IT dept postulating “Casing & Tubing design
software” costs too much
“Our current design tool has all conventional design methods”
Means: They do not recognize the real cost of ownership for
under-designed
over-designed
(even) wrong pipe!!!
Your company wouldn’t fall into any of these traps? Would it??

4. Examples of Tubing Design / Analysis
solutions given by TDAS 6.1.5
single & dual strings
tubing movement distance & direction
how much buckling occurs
set down weights for service tools
packer to casing & packer to tubing force
effects of applying overpull to unlatch from packer
identify which loads potentially cause overload
model loads on specific completion components
select appropriate materials for sour environments
More than 20 years industry benchmark performance
6. TDAS Makes Complex Operational Scenarios Understandable
Kill well with 15 ppg water based drilling mud used to drill out existing packer.
Bottom isolation packer will be set on wireline in 15 ppg mud.
Top packer with seal stack will be stung into lower packer on tubing and set
hydraulically.
Land top packer string in neutral.
Completion Tubing will be run with an anchor seal assembly.
Clean up wellbore above straddled perforations and displace to inhibited 2% KCl
brine packer fluid.
Sting into top packer and land in neutral.
Nipple up Xmas tree.
Run coiled tubing and clean up wellbore below straddled perforation zone.

Workover – Key Questions
Answered by TDAS
1. How far down does the upper packer move before it sets?
2. Is the lower packer overloaded? If, yes, what do you
recommend?
3. Is the tubing string above the upper packer overloaded?
4. Is the tubing string between the upper and lower packer
overloaded?
5. Is L-80 carbon steel an appropriate selection for this well?
6. Is the production casing overloaded during a surface
tubing leak?

8. TDAS 6.1.5 Benefits
Designs & Analyzes casing & tubing with a rule set for
consistency.
Your Rule Set models Service Life of all pipe in your well
with Load Cases.
Users can easily modify load cases to model expected
service life.
Design or analyze pipe & components to ensure ratings
comply with loads.
HTHP conditions can also be handled.
Models thermal expansion & tubing movement.
