This document discusses areas of the maxilla and mandible that may require relief when fabricating a denture, as well as methods for providing relief. The areas that may need relief include the palate, midline fractures, prominent bony areas, and sensitive areas like the incisive papilla. Relief can be achieved by using selective pressure or mucostatic impression techniques, or by selectively adding plaster or compound to the impression. Relief can also be done on the cast or final denture by using tin foil, low-speed drilling, or ensuring accurate registration of tissues requiring relief. The depth of relief required depends on the compressibility and thickness of the mucosa in the area.

Relief
1. RELIEF
Area to be relieved :-
arch Type of area Area to be relieved Lack of relief
Maxilla
Hard area Small torus palatinus Inflammation , ulceration , pain
Mid palatine raph Midline fracture , mid palatal fissure
Prominent rugea area If not prominent may be primary or secondary stress bearing area
sensitive area Incisive papilla Pain , burning sensation
Mandible
Sensitive area Mental foramen Pain , numbness or parasthesia in lower lip and chin
Hard area Small torus mandibularis Inflammation , ulceration
Bony exostosis (prominence) Inflammation , ulceration , pain
Prominent mylohyoid ridge Severe pain , irritation , bleeding
Knife edge ridge Pain due to Squeezing of mucosa in between
Methods of relief :-
At impression stage 1. Mucostatic impression technique without pressure plaster of paris scraping
2. Selective pressure impression technique compound relief
0.5 ml in sec stress bearing area and 1ml in area to be relieved by scalp in compound then
wash impression is placed (as wash impression technique but with relief in compound )
At cast Arbitrary by tin foil not accurate
At insertion Taking alginate impression by denture area to be relieved will appear without alginate after
taking impression relief is done by stone using low speed hand piece
2 visits of patient are recommended to achieve accurate relief and patient comfort
Depth of relief :- depend on compressibility and thickness of mucosa covered area to be relieved
