4. Procedures of IPMI Graduate Thesis
• The Thesis should be an
academic research or applied
business research work.
• Each student identifies his/her
personal interest in choosing a
prospective topic of academic
research that suits a specific
condition of a company.
• The students should do the work
individually and later defend it
before a team of examiner.
• The Terms of Reference is to be
filed by the student individually to
Academic Operations for
approvals.
• Immediately after the final
examination of the Thesis,
students incorporate revisions
asked by the examiners into the
Thesis.

7. Steps in Research Methods
1. Problem Identification: essential, actual,
crucial, interesting – to keep you motivated!
2. Problem formulation/scope: dominant factors
or variables to be observed – what are the
factors that influence team performance?
3. Literature review: theoretical linkages among
variables and applicable methodology,
research gap – find relevant literatures using
key words, eg. Leadership>motivation>team
performance
4. Hypothesis and research question
development – based on the variables to be
observed
8. Steps in Research Methods
5. Research design: qualitative, quantitative, mixed
method – depends on what you want to find.
6. Research instrument and data collection –
depends on the research methods chosen.
7. Data analysis and presentation of results
(findings)
• Quantitative: statistical calculations
• Qualitative: data displays based on operational
definitions
8. Data interpretation (discussions): relate the
findings with the literature
9. Making conclusions and recommendations:
explain whether your research objectives are
met. Recommend further actions.
9. The Halmarks of Scientific Research
• Purposiveness
• Rigor
• Testability
• Replicability
• Precision and Confidence
• Objectivity
• Generalizability
• Parsimony
10. Step 1: Broad Problem Area and
defining Problem Statement
• Broad Problem Area
• Negative outcomes
• Indicating an interest
to find the right
answers to improve
an existing situation.
• For example: lower
sales volume,
ineffective training
method, problems in
new installment in
the organization.
• Preliminary Study
• Unstructured
interviews,
• structured
interviews,
• Review existing
sources of
information
11. Class Assignment
• Define as many as possible the problems that
occurred in the marketplace currently.
• Discuss with your partner and assess whether
it can be classified as problems or not.
• Present it in front of the classroom
12. Class Assignment
• See and find some journals
• Define the problem statements from the
journals mentioned.
• Discuss with your partner and assess whether
it can be classified as problem or not.
• Present it please
13. Final Project Outline – Research Proposal
Part 1: Research Background
What is the title for your research proposal?
What is the significance of the issue that you research? Why?
Does your background fit with the business management research?
Explain
What are the research gaps from the literature or from empirical
evidence?
Part 2: Problem Statement
Do your problem statements specify your research object? Please type
your problem statement
Why do you select that specific research object? Please explain
14. Final Project Outline – Research
Proposal
Part 3: Relationship with & value added to previous research
(Literature Review)
What are the underlying theories that inform your research?
What are your research variables? Please explain what are they?
How do your literatures match with your research interests/concentration?
Please show/ explain
How do your literatures support your research variables? Please explain
Part 4: Research Questions
Do the wordings of your research questions with the guideline?
Can your research questions be testable and explorable ?
Part 5: Research objectives
Do your research objectives comply thesis guideline?
Do your research objectives fit with your research questions?
Do your research objectives being formulated based on the research gaps in
the literature review?
15. Final Project Outline – Research Proposal
Part 6: Brief Methods
Do your research methods fit with your research questions?:
What are the variables that you want to observe?
What are your hypotheses?
How are you going to test your hypotheses? (e.g. quantitative,
qualitative, or mixed method)? Explain briefly.
Part 7: Research Benefits (logical linkage and impacts)
What are the theoritical benefits from your research?
What are the practical benefits of your research?
