Gambling Addiction
It is hard to help someone who does not know they have a problem, and this is just another reason why gambling is so hard to stop once it starts.
Gambling is occasionally described as a "hidden illness" since there are no obvious signs like there are for someone who does drugs. Because it is the
hidden illness, gamblers typically deny and attempt to hide their gambling (Robinson, 2016). So there are no signs that a person walking down the
street is an intense gambler and he or she will actually go through great lengths in order to pretend nothing is wrong. Even when people, such as
friends and family, begin to notice and try to help, they will get turned down because the person who is addicted will not give in to the truth. A
person with a gambling addiction will continue on with gambling away everything until rock bottom, and still will not think they have a problem.
This illness is affecting thousands, and those who need help are being given up on. It is time to change society by lending a helping hand and
supporting those in need. Although gambling is a major problem in today's society, many like to think that it's a very rewarding and worthwhile thing
to do. However, through many studies and research, one can find out that various reasons point to the opposite of the previously stated fact. The
majority of people think that when they finally hit the big jackpot, they are set for life and that all the money that was previously lost will suddenly
come back.

Essay on Gambling Addiction: Compulsive or Pathological...
I am very interested in how a person could psychologically and physically feel the need to gamble. It interests me that a compulsion could turn
into physical want and pain if the compulsion isn't fulfilled. This could actually be classified as an addiction, which some people would also
classify it as a disease. People gamble for many different reasons. Some people do it for the excitement in which it will make them feel a release of
adrenaline. Another reason why some people do it is because they are very competitive and they want to feel the burst of energy that they would
possibly get from beating other players or even the dealer. Another thing that pulls them in would be the risk of it all. They make a high dollar bet and

Another rule is that you need to put a time limit on gambling when you do it, which will leave you time to do other things in your life that need
your attention so that you don't neglect anything that is important. Like setting a time limit, you also need to set a limit on how much money you
spend while gambling. You can take "spare" money for gambling and once you reach your limit, you just need to walk away so that you don't lose
more than what you have. You also need to realize that if you do win some money, you need to walk away and accept that as a win. On the other
hand, if you are losing money you also need to walk away and just realize that it wasn't meant for you to win. Either way, this rule will greatly
benefit you and prevent you from losing more than what you have. You may even gain more than what you came with. There are some people that
only gamble once or twice a year for fun if they go on a business trip, honeymoon, vacation, etc. These of people don't find this is a problem and
they actually don't see anything negative about it because they know how to control themselves. There are other people who feel the need to gamble
every day, even upon awakening. They see this as their way of life and what they don't see the fact that they could lose everything and leave their life
in shambles. There are ways to tell if you could be a compulsive gambler. These ways to tell begin with the simple fact of whether or not you spend

What's Lying About Gambling Addiction?
Not every person who drinks alcohol is an alcoholic, and not every person that gambles has a gambling addiction. Normally, there are signs when a
person has a gambling problem, and it will impact those around him or her. If you see these signs in someone you love, or yourself, it's important that
you receive the help you need for yourself or your loved one.
Obsessed with Gambling
Those who are addicted to gambling can't stop thinking about the last time they played. They might replay every moment of it in their heads to try and
analyze what they did right or wrong in anticipation of the next time they gamble. This obsession means that even if they try to stop, they can't. The
urge to play is too strong for them to resist. The next time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They say they'll stop after they win back all their money. They'll play longer and more often trying to win back any money they lost, which is how
they end up thousands of dollars in debt with friends and family members. The gambler will claim that the loss was a fluke, or the next hand will be
luckier. They really believe that their luck will change if they just play a little longer.
Increasing the Adreneline
As they become more obsessed with gambling, they'll take bigger chances with their money. They have to increase the rush they get from the
process. Instead of spending $20 on a roulette spin, they'll start placing $100 on each spin. They'll place bigger bets on card games, or spend more on
scratch tickets. The games and amounts will vary for each individual, but it'll start to escalate as they become addicted.
A person with a gambling addiction can have any of these 5 signs or all of them when they need to receive help. It can be difficult to confront a person
with a gambling addiction, but it's in control of their life, and they need to seek the advice of a mental health

Essay on Gambling Addiction In Gen. Y
Gambling Addiction In Gen. Y
Gambling has become a growing issue concerning the generation y. According to a survey done by Ctcclearing.com1, 80% of teenagers claimed to
have gambled in some form. With a percentage that large, is the problem simply that gambling is a right of passage or are teens more susceptible to the
temptations that casinos have.
The Addiction
Compulsive gambling is a disease among many people. "The American Psychiatric Association classifies compulsive gambling as an impulse–control
disorder." (MayoClinic) Which means compulsive gamblers are people who cannot control the urge gambling. They don't set spending limits and don't
realize that they odds of winning are not in their favor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another problem from gambling is depression and drinking. Some compulsive gamblers drink to forget their losses.
According to estimates from WebMd Health, 5 4 – 8% of teenagers are compulsive gamblers compared to 1–2% for adults. Teenagers are prone
gambling and other problems because they have lower self–esteem than adults do. It is harder for a teenager to admit defeat than it is for an adult. An
adult may lose $20 say it isn't my day and leave. A teenager may not accept the loss and will try to win it back. This results in them loosing more
money and the loss is harder to take.
The treatment of compulsive gamblers is a hard task. In (Gambling Without Guilt6 106) a quote from Mohandas Gandhi on compulsive gambling
"In a way worse than the plague or the quake, for it destroys the soul within. A person without a soul is a burden on the earth. No doubt war against
gambling is not so simple as war against plague and earthquake distress. ... To wean the gambler from his vice is like weaning the drunkard from the
drink habit. This war against gambling is therefore an uphill task." The lines express the seriousness of the problems and they effort needed to
accomplish the task of freeing the gambler from the addiction.

The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Age
Research Question
How can the amounts gambled by young adults be reduced, and what is the path to overcoming instances of gambling addiction affecting this age
group?
Background
Pathological gambling, also known as Ludomania, is an addiction and is clinically referred to as a disorder that can affect people of all ages. Young
people between the ages of 18–24 spend more money to gamble than any other age group. This has become a growing problem over the years as our
technology has advanced, causing many young people to have little or no money by the age of 30. Many adult pathologic gamblers report having
developed gambling problems during their teenage years. (Delfabbro, P, Gambling Research Australia, A review of Australian Gambling Research,
August 2008) Although the common perception is that it is just irresponsible and bad behavior, it is actually much more complex than that.
Pathological gambling is an addiction rooted in the brain, just like a drug or alcohol addiction. As this generation has been brought up with the new and
upcoming technology, many young people have started some form of gambling. Whether it is betting on a sports game, online shopping or even buying
a scratchy ticket, they have gambled money away. This leads us to the biggest question. How can we minimize this?
Intervention aims
Like an alcohol or drug addiction, pathological gambling is a long–term disorder that tends to get worse without treatment. Even with treatment, it can
be quite common to

Essay on Extreme Gambling: Addiction or Obsession?
Gambling in the United States seems to be as American as apple pie. Going to the convenience store to pick up your weekly lottery ticket, then day
dreaming about what you would do if you won. I have actually calculated how much I would give to each family member, how many houses I would
buy and trips I would take. Once a year I take my wife to the casino for her birthday. We take a couple hundred dollars and spend all night at the
roulette table, then end the night at the slot machine. It can be an expensive and rewarding night out. I mean we spend all year paying bills, saving
money, and taking care of our children, so one night out is deserved. Now could you imagine if that one night out turned into once a month, then once a

The Relief and Escape Gambler is someone who uses gambling to make them happy. They will spend time gambling after anything stressful or if
things aren't going their way. The Compulsive Gambler is where Serious Social gambling often leads to. Gambling will consume them. They will start
blowing off work, family and friends. Often times this will lead to criminal behavior to support the habit. Last is the Anti–Social Gambler. This person
has already been living a life of crime, so robbery or fraud is nothing new to them. These people often fix games or cheat to win as well. Problem
gamblers are usually Men, high rollers/large losses, with an income of less then $10K per year. The average debt of a problem gambler will exceed
$55K or $15K for women. The divorce rates are twice as high, and suicide rates are twenty times higher for a problem gambler; in fact one in five
problem gamblers will attempt suicide. Research done by Keith Whyte (Executive Director of National Council on Problem Gambling) shows; that
gambling addictions are not about being greedy, but the act of "winning" is what they crave. "For someone with a gambling problem, money becomes
less important" Says Whyte, "Money is the substance they abuse, but it's the action of gambling that keeps them hooked".
Do you ever wonder if you might have a problem; or suspect that a loved one may? A few of the characteristics, due to the secretive nature of

Gambling: the Problems and History of Addiction,...
Recently there have been a lot of studies on the subject of gambling and games play. The average uninformed individual might wonder "Why, it
really is not that big of a deal?" and think that it is just a small poker game or a little bet over a sporting event. There are so many more aspects to
gambling than just the little games and bets. That is just a fraction of all of the problems and crime it can be connected to. Now there are also great
perks to having some forms of gambling, such as lotteries. The lotteries help out by contributing to government programs such as education, military,
etc. To help people understand gambling and games play it is necessary that they learn about the history, the viewpoints, and the cold hard facts....

He sued the Washington D. C. government, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff and they were forced to pay the one–hundred thousand
dollars. This scared many states from getting directly involved with lotteries and thus led to the banning of lotteries in most states. Only
Pennsylvania and Massachusetts had not prohibited gambling and game playing from 1840 to 1860. Gambling would return, however, in a bigger
way than before. Gambling exploded back onto the scene around the late 1880's near the end of the Civil War. This was known as the second
wave called National Lotteries. The south needed a way to pay for all of the reconstructing it would need, after the damages suffered during the war.
There were a variety of things that needed to be fixed such as; roads, bridges, school buildings, and all of the other buildings and institutions that had
suffered damage during the war. Desperate for a way to raise money, southern legislatures let private operators conduct lotteries to raise these greatly
needed funds. Lotteries were different this time as they were held on a national level instead of a local level. The southern lotteries sold out tickets to
people all over the nation. A very popularlottery was held in Louisiana and was called "The Serpent". The reason this lottery was so popular was
because it was held on the national level. Everyone from anywhere in the

Gambling: Behavior And Substance Addictions
Addictions come in different forms for instance, there are behavioral addiction and substance addictions. Both of these addictions are similar and
have some of the same results. For someone who has a substance addiction they can not control themselves from consuming whatever drug they are
addicted to, if they did try and stop their body could relapse, or they become could become ill. Behavioral addictions in some cases can be just as
severe. For instance Gambling is a behavior that can become very addictive, and lead to many problems if one lets it. Gambling is still a topic that
has not been studied enough, the research available on it is very limited. However, when abused gambling is a serious behavioral addiction and the more

Gambling addiction has become very real, very quick, to me and my friends and family. My best friend's mother, Beverly Roan, is currently
incarcerated at Sandy Mush Correctional Facility in Merced, California after allegedly embezzling over $350,000.00 from her employer to fund her
gambling addiction. Beverly is a 58 year old mother of three, and grandmother of eight; no one ever suspected this level of addiction or criminal activity
based on our daily interactions with her. We were shocked and appalled when she was arrested at her work back in February. We were completely
unaware that her penchant for going to Chukchansi to play the slot machines had evolved into a full–fledged gambling addiction. Pathological

Although more men than women are thought to suffer from pathological gambling, women are developing this disorder at higher rates, now making up
as much as 25% of individuals with pathological gambling (Dryden–Edwards).
Some other facts about the disorder are that it can happen in multiple venues from a casino to someone's living room. With the advances of online
gambling and the increase in websites that promote and host gambling the number of people exposed to gambling increases. It is thought that those at
risk for gambling addiction are people being treated for Parkinson's disease or restless leg syndrome with medications. Also people diagnosed as
bipolar are higher risk. Most experts agree that gambling addictioin is mostly likely the combination of several biological vulnerabilities
(Dryden–Edwards). Diagnostics for gambling addiction is based on ruling out other psychological disorders. The doctors would want to do
complete physical, run blood tests and do a full psychological evaluation. It is believed that most people who have a gambling addiction also suffer
from some other mental disorder. The only way for a gambling addict to ever recover is for the addict to admit they actually have a problem. If the

Gambling Addiction
Addictions can spawn from anything, things as simple as shopping or sweets can range up to drugs and sex. It's really easy to start an addiction but it's
really hard to quit. Addictions if not treated can affect your health and relationships with family and friends. Also, some addictions have the ability to
destroy your life and Angie Bachmann case proves this. Angie Bachmann had a terrible gamblingaddiction that made her lose everything but I don't
believe it's her complete fault. There are multiple factors that lead to Angie Bachmann gambling addiction. Her relationships with her family and her
parents also how the casino treated her and seduced Bachmann when she tried to quit. It is not completely Bachman fault, to prove this I will be
explaining and using the Old and Milner's experiment on the pleasure of the mind and Bruce Alexander experiments on seduction and withdrawal to
prove it's not completely Angie Bachmann fault when it came to her gambling addiction.
The objective of Olds and Milner's experiment was to find the pleasure spots in the brain. To do this they used white rats and hooked up their minds
with electrodes The experiment consisted of shocking a part of the rat's brain until they found this part of the brain that gave immense pleasure and
gave the rats control to see what would happen. The results were that the rat's continuously pleasured themselves until they were dead. Stated from the

Gambling Addiction In Children
It is hard to imagine the emotional roller coaster that a child goes through when having to deal with a parent that has a gambling addiction. Every
week, a new piece of furniture is missing and the fridge is almost always empty. Yet, the mother still sometimes has enough to pay the rent and buy
herself new clothes when she wants. The child's feeling of neglect has made her a stranger in his eyes, and all he ever does is wish help for her. One
problem he seems to face is that no one seems to pay much attention to gambling addicts. Addictions are not simply limited to drug and alcoholism, buy

As a gambling mother, all of her money is going into feeding her addiction rather than the things that matter most, such as her child's education, his
clothes and his food. Imagine a child always coming home with no food to eat or no jacket to wear in the cold weather because his mother spent
all her money gambling. When a mother or father has a gambling problem, the child in their care can feel forgotten, depressed and angry (PG).
They may even feel responsible for the problem, and alter their behaviors as a result (p.1). This can follow the child to adult age not only ruin the
relationship that the parent has with the child but also create mental and emotional issues for the child in older age. According to the California
Council, the absence of a caregivers for the child can thrust them into a role of responsibility, forcing them to take care of siblings or try to support
their parents (p.1). This responsibility causes children stress, and continuous stress can lead to drug related issues for the child in the future (p.1). For
a child who doesn't have food to eat, this can be difficult, as most of them are too young to get a job and pay for things themselves. This type of
situation can cause a child to result to criminal activity such as

Sexual addiction has become rapidly recognized as a significant social problem with similarities better recognized to drug addiction and alcohol or
compulsive gambling. sexual addicts refers to individuals who engage in persistent, as well as, escalating patterns of sexual behaviour acted out
regardless of the increasingly negative impact to the self and others. To begin with copulation or coitus, sexual intercourse is the physical union
between a man and woman, for reproduction, sexual pleasure or both. The act involves a high level of physical intimacy and contributes immensely to
human bonding. This is because, sex is associated with emotional and physical pleasure therefore creating a connection between the people involved.
However, some people tend to overdo the act of sex to a point that they become dependent on it leading to a sexual addiction. This paper aims at
discussing sexual addiction, its causes, effects and characteristics.
II.Literature review
According to Carnes (15) sexual addiction is a clinical condition referred to in the medical spheres as "progressive intimacy disorder." The addiction
involves spending long periods preoccupied with sexual thoughts and behaviors all geared towards achieving a desired sexual effect. In the United
States alone, more than thirty million people are in the category of those who suffer from the condition.

Pros And Cons Of Gambling Addiction
Gambling addiction can be a serious a problem, for some more than others. Some have the self–control to know when enough is enough, and then some
don't. After reading the article it is safe to say that Mr. Watanabe had some serious issues. Not only did he have a serious gambling problem, he also
had a drinking and drug problem. These two together is not a good combination. This was not your normal gambling issue, this was the biggest loss in
Vegas history of 127 million dollars! Seeing this from an outsider's perspective, there are two different ways you can look at the situation. You can
either feel sorry for him and feel that he was treated wrongly and unlawfully, or one can feel no remorse for him and that he brought it all upon himself.
After much thought, I have a firm stance that what was going on in those casinos was one, illegal and two, outright just wrong. Mr. Watanabe was
absolutely taken advantage of.
As a young boy Mr. Watanabe had a wealthy family was a very successful business man and was a chief executor of his father's business by the age of
20. After years of owning this business he sold it for millions and decided he wanted to have fun for a while and be stress free. Gambling is fun,
right? He began gambling at a Harrah's casino in Iowa back in 2003. He was one of the casinos biggest gamblers at the casino and everyone knew him
very well there. He had also traveled to Vegas to gamble and that's where his serious gambling, drug and alcohol abuse began.

Gambling Addiction : Illegal Gambling
Gambling Addiction Walking into the flashing lights, the happy people and seeing people win; are all the start of a bad beginning. Gamblers have a
different mindset them some and they need help most of the time. The worse thing for a person just starting out is to see people win because they
believe they are going to do the same thing and even more. That is almost never how it turns out; it usually starts with betting small, but gamblers
always raise their bets over time even if they are winning or losing. There have been a few people in my life that have been addicted to gambling
including myself. My grandma and grandpa are big into it, but a few years ago my grandpa decided enough was enough and got help from a
professional. My grandma on the other hand did not and still is a heavy gambler to this day. My father was the biggest gambler I ever knew and I
would go as far as saying he was the biggest gambler in Cape Girardeau at the time. I remember planes from Vegas coming to pick us up, getting all
the food we wanted and vacations, and staying everywhere for free.
When I say the word free I mean that loosely because anyone that gambles spends more than what they get for free. I believe that gambling is a
horrible thing, but at the same time I do think if you're going to do it absolutely take all the comps. I couldn't gamble with him at the young age I

mother. Angie stated, "I always felt like the untalented one" (Duhigg pg. 246). Constantly being put down by people who are supposed to support
you to the fullest can make you feel like you are not good enough. It is almost as if she turned to gambling trying to run from the way her family
made her feel. Over the years the more she gambled the less her family needed her which only made her want to gamble more. If she would have

I think that a sufficient amount of all the extra revenue in each state should be spent on clinics since gambling addiction is an economic problem that
comes directly from legalized gambling. The extra revenue could be the answer to having enough clinics to meet the rising need.
Another solution to the problem of gambling addiction is more ordinance and restriction laws. These laws regulate every aspect that limits gambling.
Without enough of them a state's gambling industry could increase quickly bringing a rise of gambling addiction rate along with it.
Ordinance laws are state laws that protect areas and buildings from having gambling machines. Without enough ordinance laws, it can be legal to
place slot machines around public facilities, such as, schools and churches. This allows easy access to children. Almost 1 percent of the population
has serious gambling problems, but the rate is twice as high in adolescents (9). Experts in adolescent compulsive behavior say between 14 and 15
percent of all adolescents who gamble by playing poker will eventually become compulsive gamblers (11). When children have access to gambling
machines it increases their chance of developing a gambling addiction in their future. Therefore, I think that every state that has legalized gambling
should also have good ordinance laws to keep gambling out of places where children

The Effects Of Video Game And Gambling Addiction
Although we may not notice it, but people can be addicted to video games and it will have serious downsides on your health. Like gambling
addictions, both video game and gambling addictions both fall under the same categories of disorders. An Impulse control disorder is defined as
psychiatric disorders that are identified by a sort of an impulse– failure to resist a temptation, an urge, or an itch. Both Video Game & Gambling
addictions are both recognized as Impulse Control Disorders, both are caused by the need for thrills and highs and the social status correlated with
being a successful gamer. Even both addictions both contribute to an elevated dopamine level, which in turn goes into the brain's reward center;
relating to various activities most find pleasure in such as eating or consuming drugs. The warning signs of video game addiction are playing for longer
periods as time goes on, you start to ignore basic human needs such as eating, sleeping, or needing to go to the bathroom, poor performance at work

Gambling Addiction
Introduction Gambling can stimulate the brain's reward system much like drugs or alcohol can, leading to addiction (Compulsive, 2016). That is when
gambling goes from a fun, harmless pastime to an unhealthy obsession with serious consequences. Whether you bet on horses, buy lottery tickets, play
poker, or pull the arm on the One–Armed Bandits–in a casino, at the track, or online–if your gambling becomes a problem, it can strain your
relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial disaster. It can cause you to do things you never thought you would do like stealing money,
not paying your bills, and pawning everything you own to get more money. All so you can keep gambling or pay your debts. Gamblingaddiction also
called Compulsive gambling is the uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it takes on your life. Gambling means that you're willing to
risk something you value in the hope of getting something of even greater value (Compulsive, 2016).
Individual Impact
When a person is a compulsive gambler or an addict, the effects are devastating. Many addicts will use credit cards , loans, or even tap our their
retirement fund to pay for their addiction. The result places them in debt to the point of losing homes, jobs, vehicles, and even filing bankruptcy. If they

Analysis Of Bachmann Gambling Addiction
Bachmann Gambling Addiction
In " The Neurology of Free Will," Charles Duhigg puts a special importance on habits –their inner working and how they can change. Duhigg describes
how habits work through the cycle of cue, routine, and reward. Angie Bachmann from being a bored housewife to losing all her money through
uncontrollable gambling.
Angie Bachmann mother of 3 children, got addicted to gambling felt lonely at home, when her husband went to work and children went to school.
Bachmann had gotten married young and had become pregnant almost right away. She had never held down a meaningful job. One morning, "She
was sitting at home, staring at the television, so bored that she was giving serious thought to reorganizing the silverware drawer" (Duhigg). That
morning the trouble began. She was really bored, so at about noon, Bachmann drove to a riverboat casino. She played and lost 40 dollars. After that
first trip to the casino, Bachmann started going to the riverboat once a week. Then twice a week. Over the next decade, Bachmann played regularly.
She went whenever she fought with her husband or was just bored. At the tables she was numb and excited, all at once. The high of winning was so
immediate. The pain of losing passed so fast. According to Duhigg states" First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode.
Then there is the routine – the behavior itself – which can be physical or mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps

In some cases, the gambler may begin to physically and mentally abuse their significant other commonly leading to estrangement and often times,

their own they want nothing to do with such horrific patterns from that parent. It is widely known that one can only help a person who sees an issue
in their actions. If the gambler does not see a problem with himself, they will only repeat their mistakes. Families and friends could receive horrible

Along with problems within the home, physically maintaining the home itself could become a problem. Most commonly, we see gambling addicts

Gambling Addiction In Today's Society
In today's society we American's suffer from many addictions. Some people have a drinking problem. Other people have a nicotine addiction. And
then there are those who can not seem to kick the illegal drug use. But, all of these addictions are well known and can be treated almost as easily as
the common cold. For example, smokers not only have the patch, but they have prescribed gum, billboards and commercials telling people not to
smoke, and health programs in schools across the country advising kids not to smoke by showing them ungodly pictures of the effects smoking has to
the inside of a person's body. Oh, and let's not forget about the over budgeted attempt to help those who have a drinking problem. It seems that we have
done everything from banning alcohol, to setting up A. A. programs, to having interventions. Then we have the lawbreakers–those who use and sell
drugs. Heck, everybody goes out of his or her way to rehabilitate these people and advise them not to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

For many Americans, gambling is considered a pastime. However, what they don't know is that gambling may lead to a seriousaddiction. The causes of

The Pros And Cons Of Gambling Addiction
Gambling is an entertainment that is very addicting to the average person. According to the article "losing it all; approximately 3 million to 4 million
Americans have a gambling disorder. I don't think casinos should be responsible for someone addiction. Therefore, the responsibility is up to the
individual to control their gambling addiction habits. Just like any other drug addictions; one must seek help and have self–control.
Casinos use at least two known internal tactics to target attractive customers. The first method they use is "loyalty rewards cards". They use this as an
incentive to keep the customer to keep spending and track how frequently they are at the casino and how much they spend each time they are there. The
second method to attract customers is "miniature cameras at the machine to track the customer playing style and behavior". Before these two methods
were incorporated; casinos use to buying the mailing list of credit card companies to target attractive customers. I can't blame the casinos for wanting
to make money, but I can blame the casinos for doing it in an unethical way. I don't agree with their approach on how they prey on impulsive gamblers.
Some casinos call their biggest losers" whales" these customers become the casinos most sought after repeated customers for casinos. I do not think it

Why Do Gamblers Need Obsessive Gambling Addiction?
When gambling became legal, customers began to increase playing time in the casino floor; however, this had lead to one problem, gambling
addiction. Gamblers have become obsessed with winning money that it has impacted their lifestyle. From that, gamblers lose their houses, lifestyle, and
even friends and family. While casinos need to make a profit from these customers, it is ultimately the responsibility for the guests to control themselves
in moderation. In that regard, gamblers need to have self–control in the slots and tables while casino has to also have services that will help excessive
gambling. While slots are generally available to guest, it should be done in moderation.

Pathological Gambling And Alcohol Addiction World Wide
Relating to the issue of subgroups, pathological gambling was originally classified as an impulse control disorder by the DSM–IV–TR (APA, 2000),
though, based on its criteria similar to substance dependence, some researchers preferred to consider it a behavioural addiction (Blanco et al., 2001;
Potenza et al., 2002). Goudriaan et al. (2006) provide a similar argument, stating that pathological gambling and alcohol dependence share common EF
deficits, and it has since been amended to be a behavioural addiction the in the DSM–V (APA, 2013). The divisive topic of screening and diagnosis

More recent research reports that combining the twelve step program with professional psychotherapy increases abstinence rates to between 27% and
39% (Russo et al., 1984; Lesieur and Blume, 1991). The added psychotherapy could improve attrition rates even further using 'Motivation Enhancement
Therapy' (Miller and Rollnick, 1991), a directive form of counselling that sees the therapist engage with the client in unravelling their uncertainty
around the changes that will occur during treatment. This might include, for example, anxiety regarding re–integrating into society when ones
addiction has rendered them socially withdrawn. Hodgins, Currie, & el–Guebaly (2001) found that adding even just a phone call, in which a therapist
applies this technique, to their on–going therapy can achieve a significant reduction in gambling over the following twelve months as compared to

that greater anxiety can lead to greater withdrawal symptoms (Zvolensky et al., 2004), which, in turn, is associated with reduced motivation to quit

Arguments Against Gambling Addiction
Intermittent reinforcements is a conditioning schedule in which a reward or punishment is not administered every time the desired response is

Gambling is a great example of intermittent reinforcement because you do not win every time or the same amount, which is exciting and fun for lots
of people. The reinforcement is intermittent, and causes a positive and euphoric response in the brain that in some circumstances can lead to gambling

is often played by individuals or groups of friends for amusement, and for the simple chance of personal monetary gain. However, gambling can often

As the opportunity for expansion exists, this situation gives light for individuals to become what are known as "problem gamblers". Problem gamblers
are "individuals that have the urge to consistently gamble regardless of the negative consequences associated with their continuance, and have no desire
to stop". The social implication associated with problem gamblers is focused on the direct impact they have on their families. In Ontario alone, 1.2% –
3.4% of Ontarians are impact by severe problem gambling, accounting for over 300,000 Ontarians (Gambling Industry in Ontario). Some of the
negative impacts associated with problem gambling include divorce, domestic abuse, anxiety, substance abuse, and family dysfunction (Problem
Gambling Institute of Ontario). The consideration of children should be not taken lightly, as they are significantly impacted by guardians that are
problem gamblers. Whether it be a divorce or child abuse, these problem gamblers have a considerable impact on children, as problem gamblers may
take their anger out on children or spouses when monetary losses are incurred at the casino. A 2008 study found that violence between spouses of
problem gamblers were significantly higher relative to spouses of non–problem gamblers, with 63% of individuals being identified as victims of
partner violence (Government Gambling). Furthermore, "children of problem gamblers lose their parents in a physical and an existential sense", as
children see drastic changes in behaviour from their guardian(s) (Government Gambling). This has an impact on children, as without having a proper
mother or father figure, this absence will have a considerable impact on their behaviours in the future, as the children of problem gamblers are "ten times

The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Brain
Shen, & Glombiewski, 2013).
Biological Factors Addictions are known to activate the culmination of sites in the brain that make up the 'reward centre' which is responsible for
feeling happiness or pleasure through the release of dopamine (Linden, 2011). After repeated exposures, receptors in the brain build a tolerance towards
the addiction meaning that there is a need for increased stimulation to provide a similar 'high'. Eventually behaviour patterns develop so as to avoid
withdrawal. At this point addiction is occurring and symptoms should be observable. Like other addictions, it is believed that IAD causes a release of
dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (Ko et al., 2009). It must then be discussed why certain behaviours or substances activate the reward centre
resulting in addiction. It has been agreed that, much similar to gambling addiction, Internet addiction functions through a variable ratio reinforcement
schedule (Young, 2011). However, it is also is theorised that those who use the Internet or other similar technologies experience various rewards that are
unpredictable in nature, depending on the application they are using (such as: video games, emails, social media, pornography, message boards and
texting). Paired with the mood altering content of the application the reward activation is increased. Examples of mood altering content include video
games (social inclusion, achieving tasks unobtainable in real life), pornography (sexual gratification), and online

Internet Gambling Addiction And Substance Addiction Essay
Research Proposal
Internet Gaming Addiction & Substance Addiction:
The Correlational Relationship Between Behavioral and Substance Addiction.
Jennifer M. deJong
PSY 290 – Research Methods
Dr. Norma Hernandez
November 30, 2016
Abstract
The following research proposal is determining if there is a correlational relationship between substance addiction and internet gaming addiction.
Addiction is still seen in society as a lack of willpower or a flaw in a person's character. This research will add to current research that is striving to
show that addiction is a disease of the mind. Archival research and content analysis will be acquired to provide information on both addictions and
possible co–addictions. An interview process will be conducted to gain data from participants that currently suffer from both addictions. The results of
this research study are expected to support the hypothesis that if a person has an underlying substance addiction then it could be a factor in developing
a secondary behavioral addiction such as internet gaming addiction. The study would add to the existing research being done on addiction. Showing
that addiction is not limited to one element of a person's life.

The Correlational Relationship Between Behavioral and Substance Addiction.

What is Gambling Addiction? While it may appear that addictions are solely pleasure–seeking behaviors, the roots of addiction can also be traced to a
wish to suppress or avoid some kind of emotional pain. In the broadest sense, addictive or pathological gambling is gambling behavior which causes

illness," because there are no visible physical symptoms. The American Psychological Association classifies compulsive gambling as a mental health
disorder of impulse control. It is a chronic and progressive disease that is both diagnosable and treatable. About 2 to 4 percent of Americans have an

For the love of God, it's over! That seventy–eight–year old, Hungarian–born bitch and foul–tempered, sharp–tongued shrew, finally got the death card.
In fact, death himself rode in on that white horse, waving the proverbial black and white flag, snatching that old skeletal biddy, Crazy Ava. And I'd bet

Besides, that nutty, eastern bloc peasant had a history of so many crazy episodes of anger. But he took her still wearing that Parasztok headscarf, and

standing back as he nervously pushes the keys to the slot machine and watches the images spin in the front of the machine. When it hits, she rushes to

However, everything deteriorates around noon, when her paycheck along with half of the rent money, withers to nothing. Now, desperate and hollow,
she chases those losses with bigger bets, focusing on nothing but the outcome of those wheels as they spin before her eyes. Telling herself, "It's just
me and you. Make it happen." Sinking further into that sick feeling, as each time the wheels stop rolling, feeling chained to the machine. Leaving the

Gambling Addiction

  • 1. Gambling Addiction It is hard to help someone who does not know they have a problem, and this is just another reason why gambling is so hard to stop once it starts. Gambling is occasionally described as a "hidden illness" since there are no obvious signs like there are for someone who does drugs. Because it is the hidden illness, gamblers typically deny and attempt to hide their gambling (Robinson, 2016). So there are no signs that a person walking down the street is an intense gambler and he or she will actually go through great lengths in order to pretend nothing is wrong. Even when people, such as friends and family, begin to notice and try to help, they will get turned down because the person who is addicted will not give in to the truth. A person with a gambling addiction will continue on with gambling away everything until rock bottom, and still will not think they have a problem. This illness is affecting thousands, and those who need help are being given up on. It is time to change society by lending a helping hand and supporting those in need. Although gambling is a major problem in today's society, many like to think that it's a very rewarding and worthwhile thing to do. However, through many studies and research, one can find out that various reasons point to the opposite of the previously stated fact. The majority of people think that when they finally hit the big jackpot, they are set for life and that all the money that was previously lost will suddenly come back. ... • 2. Essay on Gambling Addiction: Compulsive or Pathological... I am very interested in how a person could psychologically and physically feel the need to gamble. It interests me that a compulsion could turn into physical want and pain if the compulsion isn't fulfilled. This could actually be classified as an addiction, which some people would also classify it as a disease. People gamble for many different reasons. Some people do it for the excitement in which it will make them feel a release of adrenaline. Another reason why some people do it is because they are very competitive and they want to feel the burst of energy that they would possibly get from beating other players or even the dealer. Another thing that pulls them in would be the risk of it all. They make a high dollar bet and the moments in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another rule is that you need to put a time limit on gambling when you do it, which will leave you time to do other things in your life that need your attention so that you don't neglect anything that is important. Like setting a time limit, you also need to set a limit on how much money you spend while gambling. You can take "spare" money for gambling and once you reach your limit, you just need to walk away so that you don't lose more than what you have. You also need to realize that if you do win some money, you need to walk away and accept that as a win. On the other hand, if you are losing money you also need to walk away and just realize that it wasn't meant for you to win. Either way, this rule will greatly benefit you and prevent you from losing more than what you have. You may even gain more than what you came with. There are some people that only gamble once or twice a year for fun if they go on a business trip, honeymoon, vacation, etc. These of people don't find this is a problem and they actually don't see anything negative about it because they know how to control themselves. There are other people who feel the need to gamble every day, even upon awakening. They see this as their way of life and what they don't see the fact that they could lose everything and leave their life in shambles. There are ways to tell if you could be a compulsive gambler. These ways to tell begin with the simple fact of whether or not you spend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What's Lying About Gambling Addiction? Not every person who drinks alcohol is an alcoholic, and not every person that gambles has a gambling addiction. Normally, there are signs when a person has a gambling problem, and it will impact those around him or her. If you see these signs in someone you love, or yourself, it's important that you receive the help you need for yourself or your loved one. Obsessed with Gambling Those who are addicted to gambling can't stop thinking about the last time they played. They might replay every moment of it in their heads to try and analyze what they did right or wrong in anticipation of the next time they gamble. This obsession means that even if they try to stop, they can't. The urge to play is too strong for them to resist. The next time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They say they'll stop after they win back all their money. They'll play longer and more often trying to win back any money they lost, which is how they end up thousands of dollars in debt with friends and family members. The gambler will claim that the loss was a fluke, or the next hand will be luckier. They really believe that their luck will change if they just play a little longer. Increasing the Adreneline As they become more obsessed with gambling, they'll take bigger chances with their money. They have to increase the rush they get from the process. Instead of spending $20 on a roulette spin, they'll start placing $100 on each spin. They'll place bigger bets on card games, or spend more on scratch tickets. The games and amounts will vary for each individual, but it'll start to escalate as they become addicted. A person with a gambling addiction can have any of these 5 signs or all of them when they need to receive help. It can be difficult to confront a person with a gambling addiction, but it's in control of their life, and they need to seek the advice of a mental health ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Gambling Addiction In Gen. Y Gambling Addiction In Gen. Y Gambling has become a growing issue concerning the generation y. According to a survey done by Ctcclearing.com1, 80% of teenagers claimed to have gambled in some form. With a percentage that large, is the problem simply that gambling is a right of passage or are teens more susceptible to the temptations that casinos have. The Addiction Compulsive gambling is a disease among many people. "The American Psychiatric Association classifies compulsive gambling as an impulse–control disorder." (MayoClinic) Which means compulsive gamblers are people who cannot control the urge gambling. They don't set spending limits and don't realize that they odds of winning are not in their favor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another problem from gambling is depression and drinking. Some compulsive gamblers drink to forget their losses. According to estimates from WebMd Health, 5 4 – 8% of teenagers are compulsive gamblers compared to 1–2% for adults. Teenagers are prone gambling and other problems because they have lower self–esteem than adults do. It is harder for a teenager to admit defeat than it is for an adult. An adult may lose $20 say it isn't my day and leave. A teenager may not accept the loss and will try to win it back. This results in them loosing more money and the loss is harder to take. The treatment of compulsive gamblers is a hard task. In (Gambling Without Guilt6 106) a quote from Mohandas Gandhi on compulsive gambling "In a way worse than the plague or the quake, for it destroys the soul within. A person without a soul is a burden on the earth. No doubt war against gambling is not so simple as war against plague and earthquake distress. ... To wean the gambler from his vice is like weaning the drunkard from the drink habit. This war against gambling is therefore an uphill task." The lines express the seriousness of the problems and they effort needed to accomplish the task of freeing the gambler from the addiction. There are

  • 6. The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Age Research Question How can the amounts gambled by young adults be reduced, and what is the path to overcoming instances of gambling addiction affecting this age group? Background Pathological gambling, also known as Ludomania, is an addiction and is clinically referred to as a disorder that can affect people of all ages. Young people between the ages of 18–24 spend more money to gamble than any other age group. This has become a growing problem over the years as our technology has advanced, causing many young people to have little or no money by the age of 30. Many adult pathologic gamblers report having developed gambling problems during their teenage years. (Delfabbro, P, Gambling Research Australia, A review of Australian Gambling Research, August 2008) Although the common perception is that it is just irresponsible and bad behavior, it is actually much more complex than that. Pathological gambling is an addiction rooted in the brain, just like a drug or alcohol addiction. As this generation has been brought up with the new and upcoming technology, many young people have started some form of gambling. Whether it is betting on a sports game, online shopping or even buying a scratchy ticket, they have gambled money away. This leads us to the biggest question. How can we minimize this? Intervention aims Like an alcohol or drug addiction, pathological gambling is a long–term disorder that tends to get worse without treatment. Even with treatment, it can be quite common to ... • 7. Essay on Extreme Gambling: Addiction or Obsession? Gambling in the United States seems to be as American as apple pie. Going to the convenience store to pick up your weekly lottery ticket, then day dreaming about what you would do if you won. I have actually calculated how much I would give to each family member, how many houses I would buy and trips I would take. Once a year I take my wife to the casino for her birthday. We take a couple hundred dollars and spend all night at the roulette table, then end the night at the slot machine. It can be an expensive and rewarding night out. I mean we spend all year paying bills, saving money, and taking care of our children, so one night out is deserved. Now could you imagine if that one night out turned into once a month, then once a week, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Relief and Escape Gambler is someone who uses gambling to make them happy. They will spend time gambling after anything stressful or if things aren't going their way. The Compulsive Gambler is where Serious Social gambling often leads to. Gambling will consume them. They will start blowing off work, family and friends. Often times this will lead to criminal behavior to support the habit. Last is the Anti–Social Gambler. This person has already been living a life of crime, so robbery or fraud is nothing new to them. These people often fix games or cheat to win as well. Problem gamblers are usually Men, high rollers/large losses, with an income of less then $10K per year. The average debt of a problem gambler will exceed $55K or $15K for women. The divorce rates are twice as high, and suicide rates are twenty times higher for a problem gambler; in fact one in five problem gamblers will attempt suicide. Research done by Keith Whyte (Executive Director of National Council on Problem Gambling) shows; that gambling addictions are not about being greedy, but the act of "winning" is what they crave. "For someone with a gambling problem, money becomes less important" Says Whyte, "Money is the substance they abuse, but it's the action of gambling that keeps them hooked". • 8. Gambling: the Problems and History of Addiction,... Recently there have been a lot of studies on the subject of gambling and games play. The average uninformed individual might wonder "Why, it really is not that big of a deal?" and think that it is just a small poker game or a little bet over a sporting event. There are so many more aspects to gambling than just the little games and bets. That is just a fraction of all of the problems and crime it can be connected to. Now there are also great perks to having some forms of gambling, such as lotteries. The lotteries help out by contributing to government programs such as education, military, etc. To help people understand gambling and games play it is necessary that they learn about the history, the viewpoints, and the cold hard facts.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sued the Washington D. C. government, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff and they were forced to pay the one–hundred thousand dollars. This scared many states from getting directly involved with lotteries and thus led to the banning of lotteries in most states. Only Pennsylvania and Massachusetts had not prohibited gambling and game playing from 1840 to 1860. Gambling would return, however, in a bigger way than before. Gambling exploded back onto the scene around the late 1880's near the end of the Civil War. This was known as the second wave called National Lotteries. The south needed a way to pay for all of the reconstructing it would need, after the damages suffered during the war. There were a variety of things that needed to be fixed such as; roads, bridges, school buildings, and all of the other buildings and institutions that had suffered damage during the war. Desperate for a way to raise money, southern legislatures let private operators conduct lotteries to raise these greatly needed funds. Lotteries were different this time as they were held on a national level instead of a local level. The southern lotteries sold out tickets to people all over the nation. A very popularlottery was held in Louisiana and was called "The Serpent". The reason this lottery was so popular was because it was held on the national level. Everyone from anywhere in the ... • 10. Essay about Gambling Addiction Gambling addiction has become very real, very quick, to me and my friends and family. My best friend's mother, Beverly Roan, is currently incarcerated at Sandy Mush Correctional Facility in Merced, California after allegedly embezzling over $350,000.00 from her employer to fund her gambling addiction. Beverly is a 58 year old mother of three, and grandmother of eight; no one ever suspected this level of addiction or criminal activity based on our daily interactions with her. We were shocked and appalled when she was arrested at her work back in February. We were completely unaware that her penchant for going to Chukchansi to play the slot machines had evolved into a full–fledged gambling addiction. Pathological gambling has become a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although more men than women are thought to suffer from pathological gambling, women are developing this disorder at higher rates, now making up as much as 25% of individuals with pathological gambling (Dryden–Edwards). Some other facts about the disorder are that it can happen in multiple venues from a casino to someone's living room. With the advances of online gambling and the increase in websites that promote and host gambling the number of people exposed to gambling increases. It is thought that those at risk for gambling addiction are people being treated for Parkinson's disease or restless leg syndrome with medications. Also people diagnosed as bipolar are higher risk. Most experts agree that gambling addictioin is mostly likely the combination of several biological vulnerabilities (Dryden–Edwards). Diagnostics for gambling addiction is based on ruling out other psychological disorders. The doctors would want to do complete physical, run blood tests and do a full psychological evaluation. It is believed that most people who have a gambling addiction also suffer from some other mental disorder. The only way for a gambling addict to ever recover is for the addict to admit they actually have a problem. If the patient is in denial there is no possibility of recovery. They must first accept ... • 11. Gambling Addiction Addictions can spawn from anything, things as simple as shopping or sweets can range up to drugs and sex. It's really easy to start an addiction but it's really hard to quit. Addictions if not treated can affect your health and relationships with family and friends. Also, some addictions have the ability to destroy your life and Angie Bachmann case proves this. Angie Bachmann had a terrible gamblingaddiction that made her lose everything but I don't believe it's her complete fault. There are multiple factors that lead to Angie Bachmann gambling addiction. Her relationships with her family and her parents also how the casino treated her and seduced Bachmann when she tried to quit. It is not completely Bachman fault, to prove this I will be explaining and using the Old and Milner's experiment on the pleasure of the mind and Bruce Alexander experiments on seduction and withdrawal to prove it's not completely Angie Bachmann fault when it came to her gambling addiction. The objective of Olds and Milner's experiment was to find the pleasure spots in the brain. To do this they used white rats and hooked up their minds with electrodes The experiment consisted of shocking a part of the rat's brain until they found this part of the brain that gave immense pleasure and gave the rats control to see what would happen. The results were that the rat's continuously pleasured themselves until they were dead. Stated from the text Neurology of Free Will by Charles Duhigg " These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Gambling Addiction In Children It is hard to imagine the emotional roller coaster that a child goes through when having to deal with a parent that has a gambling addiction. Every week, a new piece of furniture is missing and the fridge is almost always empty. Yet, the mother still sometimes has enough to pay the rent and buy herself new clothes when she wants. The child's feeling of neglect has made her a stranger in his eyes, and all he ever does is wish help for her. One problem he seems to face is that no one seems to pay much attention to gambling addicts. Addictions are not simply limited to drug and alcoholism, buy can be related to material possessions, people and gambling, for example (Morris). As a gambling mother, all of her money is going into feeding her addiction rather than the things that matter most, such as her child's education, his clothes and his food. Imagine a child always coming home with no food to eat or no jacket to wear in the cold weather because his mother spent all her money gambling. When a mother or father has a gambling problem, the child in their care can feel forgotten, depressed and angry (PG). They may even feel responsible for the problem, and alter their behaviors as a result (p.1). This can follow the child to adult age not only ruin the relationship that the parent has with the child but also create mental and emotional issues for the child in older age. According to the California Council, the absence of a caregivers for the child can thrust them into a role of responsibility, forcing them to take care of siblings or try to support their parents (p.1). This responsibility causes children stress, and continuous stress can lead to drug related issues for the child in the future (p.1). For a child who doesn't have food to eat, this can be difficult, as most of them are too young to get a job and pay for things themselves. Drug Addiction And Alcohol And Compulsive Gambling Your Name Professor's Name Subject Date Research Paper Outline 1.Introduction Sexual addiction has become rapidly recognized as a significant social problem with similarities better recognized to drug addiction and alcohol or compulsive gambling. sexual addicts refers to individuals who engage in persistent, as well as, escalating patterns of sexual behaviour acted out regardless of the increasingly negative impact to the self and others. To begin with copulation or coitus, sexual intercourse is the physical union between a man and woman, for reproduction, sexual pleasure or both. The act involves a high level of physical intimacy and contributes immensely to human bonding. This is because, sex is associated with emotional and physical pleasure therefore creating a connection between the people involved. However, some people tend to overdo the act of sex to a point that they become dependent on it leading to a sexual addiction. This paper aims at discussing sexual addiction, its causes, effects and characteristics. II.Literature review According to Carnes (15) sexual addiction is a clinical condition referred to in the medical spheres as "progressive intimacy disorder." • 14. Pros And Cons Of Gambling Addiction Gambling addiction can be a serious a problem, for some more than others. Some have the self–control to know when enough is enough, and then some don't. After reading the article it is safe to say that Mr. Watanabe had some serious issues. Not only did he have a serious gambling problem, he also had a drinking and drug problem. These two together is not a good combination. This was not your normal gambling issue, this was the biggest loss in Vegas history of 127 million dollars! Seeing this from an outsider's perspective, there are two different ways you can look at the situation. You can either feel sorry for him and feel that he was treated wrongly and unlawfully, or one can feel no remorse for him and that he brought it all upon himself. After much thought, I have a firm stance that what was going on in those casinos was one, illegal and two, outright just wrong. Mr. Watanabe was absolutely taken advantage of. As a young boy Mr. Watanabe had a wealthy family was a very successful business man and was a chief executor of his father's business by the age of 20. After years of owning this business he sold it for millions and decided he wanted to have fun for a while and be stress free. Gambling is fun, right? He began gambling at a Harrah's casino in Iowa back in 2003. He was one of the casinos biggest gamblers at the casino and everyone knew him very well there. He had also traveled to Vegas to gamble and that's where his serious gambling, drug and alcohol abuse began. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Gambling Addiction : Illegal Gambling Gambling Addiction Walking into the flashing lights, the happy people and seeing people win; are all the start of a bad beginning. Gamblers have a different mindset them some and they need help most of the time. The worse thing for a person just starting out is to see people win because they believe they are going to do the same thing and even more. That is almost never how it turns out; it usually starts with betting small, but gamblers always raise their bets over time even if they are winning or losing. There have been a few people in my life that have been addicted to gambling including myself. My grandma and grandpa are big into it, but a few years ago my grandpa decided enough was enough and got help from a professional. My grandma on the other hand did not and still is a heavy gambler to this day. My father was the biggest gambler I ever knew and I would go as far as saying he was the biggest gambler in Cape Girardeau at the time. I think that a sufficient amount of all the extra revenue in each state should be spent on clinics since gambling addiction is an economic problem that comes directly from legalized gambling. Without enough ordinance laws, it can be legal to place slot machines around public facilities, such as, schools and churches. This allows easy access to children. Almost 1 percent of the population has serious gambling problems, but the rate is twice as high in adolescents (9). Experts in adolescent compulsive behavior say between 14 and 15 percent of all adolescents who gamble by playing poker will eventually become compulsive gamblers (11). • 31. The Effects Of Gambling Addiction On The Brain Shen, & Glombiewski, 2013). Biological Factors Addictions are known to activate the culmination of sites in the brain that make up the 'reward centre' which is responsible for feeling happiness or pleasure through the release of dopamine (Linden, 2011). After repeated exposures, receptors in the brain build a tolerance towards the addiction meaning that there is a need for increased stimulation to provide a similar 'high'. Eventually behaviour patterns develop so as to avoid withdrawal. At this point addiction is occurring and symptoms should be observable. Like other addictions, it is believed that IAD causes a release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (Ko et al., 2009). It must then be discussed why certain behaviours or substances activate the reward centre resulting in addiction. It has been agreed that, much similar to gambling addiction, Internet addiction functions through a variable ratio reinforcement schedule (Young, 2011).
