William Byrd was an English composer of the Renaissance era who was born in 1540 in London. He obtained the position of Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1572 and composed sacred music, secular polyphony, and keyboard works in the English styles of the time. Byrd was a Catholic in Protestant England and wrote some of his most famous works like his consort music and English anthems later in his life.
