Comparisons between 'The Blair Witch Project' & our Re-make
1.
2. Task
As part of our research we were asked to make a re-
make of a trailer of our choice. We chose to do „The
Blair Witch Project‟. We looked at what we thought
were the most effective aspects of the trailer in terms
of engaging the audience and giving them a taste of
the horrors to come.
3. What we wanted to
achieve
The aspects we found were important to emulate were the setting of the
trailer which we felt set a profound tone for the rest of the trailer in terms
of creating a spooky atmosphere.
Also the fast pace of the edits which were used to build up tension. This is
as technique used in many film trailers and not just in the horror genre.
Other parts of the trailer which we found to be important were the
conventional horror sound effects and the music that helps build up the
tension.
We also felt the some of the cinematography of the trailer was very
effective such as the hand held tracking shots of the protagonists running
through the forests and also the effect of it being a homemade movie and
it all being filmed from a hand-cam.
4. Comparing
After we made the trailer we decided to compare the
real trailer to our one that we made. These are the
comparisons and similarities that we found.
5. Original Trailer
The real trailer used quick cuts so they can build up
tension and also try and intrigue as well as scare the
audience enough to come and see the full film.
Similar conventions were used in the real trailer to
our trailer but were more in detailed and higher
budgeted.
Titles were used in the original trailer of „The Blair
Witch Project‟ to show that it was a film that was
going to be a documentary style because found
footage pretends to be real.
6. Our Trailer
We did not include all the scenes that were in the original trailer
sequence.
We did although use the quick cuts in the editing just like the
original trailer.
We did not use all the same dialogue as used in the film but tried
to keep it relatively the same.
We stuck to the conventions of horror such as filming in a forest,
using screaming sound effects, also tried to keep the characters
from the movie trailer the same and try to not add or subtract any
of them.
We used a hand-cam as like the one used in the trailer to create
the effect of it being a “real” self-made film.
10. Evaluation of the re-make
To evaluate I feel as if our trailer, with the limited
resources and knowledge that we managed include
all the key conventions used in the original trailer.
Although we did not do all the shots and copy word
for word all the dialogue in the film, we kept to the
most important shots that help to convey the horror.
