Monsoon Preparations Survey for Archaeological Ruins Mohenjodaro
1. Proposed Monsoon preparation works
Area Problem Proposed Action
SD - Area Due to the difference of elevation of
the “Granary” to the surrounding
ground level, water is rushing down
the slopes, washing out great parts
of the brick work and of foundations.
- Building of temporary mud-brick
dams to lower the speed of
running water down slope.
-Covering lower parts of the
granary-platform with geo-textiles
and mud bricks.
- Covering the tiles floor and
fissures of the surface down
slope with mud bricks.
2. Area Problem Proposed Action
HR - Area In this section the walls are affected
by an uncontrolled water flow, which
is tunneling the walls.
The combination of missing
maintenance, running rainwater and
salt crystallization caused a
deterioration of the structures. The
walls are crumbling, bricks are falling
down, holes were opened by running
water and walls are leaning.
- Uncontrolled water drainage is
damaging fragile borders of the
walls (crumbling).
-Building up new mud-brick
layers to protect toppings.
- Putting soil on the ground level
of the room to rise the present
level (allowing water to run off).
-Brick which have fallen down
should be relocated to their
position in correct bonding.
3. Area Problem Proposed Action
VS - Area The remaining walls are
standing on a terraced
topography. Water is
tunneling under the
structures, washing out
substructures and taking the
mortar. Furthermore the
bricks are crumbling and
flaking.
- Building up barriers to
control and canalize the
water flow into the lanes
and surrounding areas.
-Stabilizing the remaining
walls by surrounding
mud bricks bases.
4. Area Problem Proposed Action
Moneer -
Area
The main problems
occurring in this section are
affected by an uncontrolled
water flow, which is
tunneling the walls and even
washing out the ground
level causing damages in
the uncovered sub-layer
architectural remains.
-Filling up the gaps in the
walls to stabilize the
foundations.
-Building up barriers to
control and canalize water
flow into the lanes and
surrounding a.
-Fill in the washed out
capping/holes with mud-bricks.
5. Area Problem Proposed Action
DK-G- Area Damages in DK-G south Area
are mainly caused by the
effects on uncontrolled running
surface water after heavy rain
falls. Surface levels outside
houses are lower than inside
and rooms are filled at different
level with earth. Water is
captured in room corners and
draining uncontrolled through
the brickwork.
-Introduce low barriers of
condensed mud-bricks
along the same hypothetic
lines on the ground to break
up water speed and control
direction of water flow.
-Consolidate base zone by
supports of mud brick.
- Protect wall tops by
renewing the mud brick
layers.
