The Irish Hunger Memorial located in Battery Park, New York, NY is designed to raise public awareness of the events that led to the famine of 1845-1852. One and a half million Irish were lost through famine related death and Diaspora. The Memorial contains an authentic famine-era cottage as well as plants and grasses native to Ireland. The path that winds through the Memorial leads to a spot twenty-five feet above the ground with a view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where many of the families affected by the famine immigrated to.
