Irish Hunger Memorial Honors Famine Victims in NYC
1. The Irish Hunger Memorial located in Battery Park, New York, NY is designed to raise public awareness of the events that led to the famine of 1845-1852. One and a half million Irish were lost through famine related death and Diaspora. The Memorial contains an authentic famine-era cottage as well as plants and grasses native to Ireland. The path that winds through the Memorial leads to a spot twenty-five feet above the ground with a view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where many of the families affected by the famine immigrated to.
