2. SAHIH INTERNATIONAL
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
And enter among My [righteous] servants

3. Nafs ( ‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َ‫ن‬) is an Arabic word occurring in the Quran,
literally meaning "self", and has been translated as
"psyche", "ego" or "soul".
The Quran does not attribute to the nafs any inherent
properties of good or evil, but instead conveys the
idea that it is something which has to be nurtured
and self-regulated, so that it can progress into
becoming 'good' through its thoughts and actions.

4. Understanding the Three Types/Stages of Nafs
1.The inciting nafs (an-nafs al-ʾammārah)
2.The self-accusing nafs (an-nafs al-luwwāmah)
3.The nafs at peace (an-nafs al-muṭmaʾinnah)

5. The first is nafs-ul-ammarah.
ٌ‫ة‬َ‫ار‬َّ‫م‬َ َ‫َل‬ َ‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ِ‫ُّوء‬‫س‬‫ال‬ِ‫ب‬
Nafs toh badii par uksaata hi hai.
Indeed the nafs that overwhelmingly commands a
person to do sin.[12:53]
1.The inciting nafs (an-nafs al-ʾammārah)

6. Second type of nafs is known as nafs-ul-lawwamah.
Allah Almighty has mentioned this in Quran:
َ‫و‬َِِ‫م‬‫ا‬َّ‫و‬ََّّ‫ال‬ ِ‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬ِ‫ب‬ ‫ق‬ُِ‫س‬ْْ‫ق‬ُ َ‫اَل‬
[75:2]
Lawwam here means to self incriminate, to self
reproach, to have blame, to do mulamat of oneself.
And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of
resurrection]
2.The self-accusing nafs (an-nafs al-
luwwāmah)
Aur us nafs ki qasam jo apne oopar bahot malaamat
karte.

7. ٰ‫ى‬َ‫و‬َ‫ه‬ْ‫ال‬ ِ‫َن‬‫ع‬ َ‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬ ‫ى‬َ‫ه‬َ‫ن‬َ‫و‬ ِ‫ه‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ َ‫م‬‫ا‬َ‫ق‬َ‫م‬ َ‫اف‬َ‫خ‬ ْ‫ن‬َ‫م‬ ‫ا‬َّ‫م‬ََُ‫و‬-79:40
ٰ‫ى‬َ‫و‬ْ‫أ‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ال‬ َ‫ي‬ِ‫ه‬ ََِّ‫ن‬َ‫ج‬ْ‫ال‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ‫ف‬-79:41
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented
the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
Aur Jo apne rab ke samne khade hone se dara
hoga aur nafs ki khaahishaat ko roka hoga.
Toh uska thikaana behisht hai.

8. The third way this word has been used in the Quran-e-
Kareem is nafs-ul-mutmainnah.
ِ‫إ‬ ‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬ ِ‫ج‬ْ‫ار‬ ‫ق‬َِّ‫ن‬ِ‫ئ‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ط‬‫ق‬‫م‬ْ‫ال‬ ‫ق‬‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َّ‫ن‬‫ال‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ه‬‫ق‬‫ت‬َّ‫ي‬َُ ‫ا‬َ‫ي‬ًَِ‫ي‬ ِ‫اض‬َ‫ر‬ ِ‫ك‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ ‫ى‬َ‫ل‬ًَِّ‫ي‬ ِ‫ض‬ْ‫ر‬َ‫م‬
To the righteous it will be said “oh reassured soul, return to your Lord
well pleased, and pleasing to Him”
[89:27-28]
Aye Nafs-E-mutmainna, chal apne Rabb ki taraf is haal mein
ke tu (apne anjam e naik se) khush(aur apne Rab ke
nazdeek) pasandeedah hai.
3.The nafs at peace (an-nafs al-
muṭmaʾinnah)

9. Characteristics of nafs
In its primitive state the nafs has seven
characteristics that must be overcome:
Pride (Takabbur)
Greed (Tamaa)
Jealousy (Hasad)
Lust (Shahwah)
Backbiting (Gheebah)
Stinginess (Bokhl)
Malice (Keena)

10. ْ‫ك‬ِ‫ذ‬ِ‫ب‬ ُ‫ق‬‫ه‬‫ق‬‫ب‬‫و‬‫ق‬َّ‫ق‬ْ ُّ‫ن‬ِ‫ئ‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ط‬َ‫ت‬َ‫و‬ ‫وا‬‫ق‬‫ن‬َ‫م‬‫آ‬ َ‫ين‬ِ‫ذ‬َّ‫ال‬َ‫ت‬ ِ َّ‫اَّلل‬ ِ‫ر‬ْ‫ك‬ِ‫ذ‬ِ‫ب‬ َ‫اَل‬َُ ۗ ِ َّ‫اَّلل‬ ِ‫ر‬ُّ‫ن‬ِ‫ئ‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ط‬
‫ق‬‫وب‬‫ق‬َّ‫ق‬‫ق‬ْ‫ال‬-13:28
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the
remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah
hearts are assured."
ْ‫س‬‫ق‬‫ح‬َ‫و‬ ُْ‫ق‬‫ه‬َ‫ل‬ ٰ‫ى‬َ‫ب‬‫و‬‫ق‬‫ط‬ ِ‫ت‬‫ا‬َ‫ح‬ِ‫ل‬‫ا‬َّ‫ص‬‫ال‬ ‫وا‬‫ق‬َِّ‫َم‬‫ع‬َ‫و‬ ‫وا‬‫ق‬‫ن‬َ‫م‬‫آ‬ َ‫ين‬ِ‫ذ‬َّ‫ال‬‫بب‬َ‫م‬ ‫ق‬‫ن‬-13:29
Those who have believed and done righteous deeds - a good state is
theirs and a good return.
Jo Iman le aae hain aur jin ke dil Allah ki yaad se Itmenaan
paate hy, sun lo ke allah ki yaad se sukoon paate hain, Sun lo ki
allah ki yaad se dilon ko Itmenaan(Sukoon) milta hai.
Jo Iman laye aur nek amal kiye unke liye khush-haali
aur accha thikaana hai.
