In Chapter 2, we learned about self-concept and in that chapter also we came across intrinsic
motivation. Intrinsic motivation is a form of motivation where a person is motivated from
within their self by their own desires to complete a task. Intrinsic motivation leads a person to
be more fully engaged and to greater interest and pleasure.
From, my experience, I am able to relate to this intrinsic motivation is through my experience
with playing field hockey. I started playing hockey at the age of 11 because there was a hockey
coach transferred to my primary school and he wanted to form a hockey team. At first, I joined
the hockey training because of all my friends was joining it and I didn’t want to be left out. I
joined the training every evening and realizes that I didn’t enjoy myself because it was really
tiring and I was unable to withstand the pain of getting hit by a hockey stick which resulting the
increasing number of bruises on by legs and arm. I was thinking to quit but never did because I
didn’t want to be left out by my friends. So I just kept on playing hockey because of my friends.
It wasn’t until I was chosen to represent my primary school in a hockey tournament, later on
was chosen to represent the district which is Klang and then I was chosen to represent the
Selangor state. I was exposed to different level of trainings, surrounded by new people, having
to leave home to attend training camps, going to places I’ve never been for a friendly match
and spending time with all my friends. I then realizes that since the beginning, I joined hockey
because I wanted to and not because of my friends, using my friends was just an excuse to
manipulate myself to keep on playing hockey because I didn’t want to admit that I really enjoy
it.
I finally embraced the fact that I enjoy playing hockey and began to train harder and improving
my skills. I would train by myself at home on the days when there’s no training. I would clean all
my hockey gears before every training, prepare my hockey attire the day before and even ask
my friends and the coach if we could have training on holidays. I would always be prepared for
hockey.
I play hockey because I wanted to, I feel happy when I hold my hockey stick, I feel good when I
can run in the field, I love the adrenaline I get every time I stepped on the hockey field, I love
the fact that I am able to play hockey.
This is my experience that related to intrinsic motivations.
April 19th 2015, 12am
Extrinsic motivations are driven by external factors, where a person is eager to complete a task
because the will be either reward or punishment waiting for them.
From my experience, extrinsic motivation relates to the time when I was in my last year of high
school and the time of my SPM examination. I was a lazy, always taking it easy and never really
focused on my studies. I dislike few of the subjects that I have to take because I was in a sub
science class. Despite the fact that I hate studying, I really wanted to score my SPM. The reason
is because I don’t want to be compared with my older sister who aced her SPM and my cousins
whom will be taking SPM the same year as me.
My parents made a deal with me earlier that year that if I aced my SPM, they’ll buy me a new
phone and considered sending me to Japan to visit my aunt whom is staying there. With this
rewards waiting for me, I really worked hard studying to achieve my SPM target.
I studied hard and tried my best to focus on the subjects that I dislike. I did all that I could and I
was able to achieve a pretty good result and was not compared to my sister or my cousins. I
made my parents happy and everyone around me as well as myself.
This is my experience that is related to extrinsic motivations.
April 25th 2015, 12pm
Social loafing is the phenomena where a person performs poorly in a group and it is because of
they felt that their contribution is not noticed by other or is not great enough.
I have experience this many times since I enter this course, it occurs every time there is a
communication barrier between other group members and myself. I was grouped up with a
group of all Chinese, me myself being the only Malay in the group was really difficult because
they would discuss in Chinese and they don’t know how to explain to me in English of what they
have discussed earlier. Therefore I was unable to involve in the group discussion and was also
unable to share my ideas as they don’t fully understand what I was talking about.
After that, I was only following their steps on the assignment as I don’t fully understand their
ideas and concept. Feeling like a passenger in the group really made me feel bad because at the
end of the day other people can see who’s doing the jobs and people will know that I didn’t
contribute as much as the other to the group.

We have learnt about how our attitude works in chapter 5. Our attitude refers to the evaluation
of an individual based on the ABC components which is affective, behavioral and cognitive.
Attitude can be vary in tone either positive or negative and also strength either mild or
passionate. Attitudes can also ambivalent at times, for example I love listening to EXO’s song
“Call Me Baby” whilst doing my work but at the same time I dislike the group. When the part of
the member I dislike automatically my emotions were disturbed and lead my behavior to skip
some parts of the song and music video. This situation show that my attitude effected by
behavior.
But sometimes, my attitude does not affect my behavior. For example, I’ve skipped classes and
knowing that it is a bad decision to make because it will effect myself as I will miss few lectures
but I till went on with the idea of skipping class. This attitude of mine is a disadvantage to me
and I want to change it so that it will match my behavior.
