succeeded by his wife Agathokleia who ruled as regent for his
son Strato I. Buddhist tradition relates that he handed over his
kingdom to his son and retired from the world, but Plutarch
relates that he died in camp while on a military campaign, and

enshrined in monuments, probably stupas, across his realm.

Apollonius of Tyana (Ancient Greek: Ἀπολλώνιος ὁ
Τυανεύς; c. 15? – c. 100? CE[2]) was a Greek Neopythagorean
philosopher from the town of Tyana in the Roman province of
Cappadocia in Asia Minor. Being a 1st-century orator and
philosopher around the time of Christ, WAS MORE KNOWN
AT THIS PERIOD THEN JESUS, he was compared with Jesus
of Nazareth by Christians in the 4th century[3] and by various
popular writers in modern times.
"The most that can be said ... is that Apollonius appears to have

Philostratus devoted two and a half of the eight books of his Life
of Apollonius (1.19–3.58) to the description of a journey of his
hero to India. According to Philostratus' Life, en route to the Far

Pythagoras, whom the Neo-Pythagoreans regarded as an
exemplary sage, was believed to have travelled to India. Hence
such a feat made Apollonius look like a good Pythagorean who
spared no pains in his efforts to discover the sources of oriental
piety and wisdom.

Apollonius was a known figure in the medieval Islamic world.
In the Arabic literature he appears as Balīnūs (or Balīnās or
Abūlūniyūs). Arabic-speaking occultists dubbed him "Lord of
the talismans" (Ṣāḥib aṭ-ṭilasmāt) and related stories about his
achievements as a talisman-maker. They appreciated him as a
master of alchemy and a transmitter of Hermetic knowledge.

and supplication." The use of talismans is commonplace in Babi
and (to a lesser extent) Baha'Bahá'u'lláh, LAWH-I-HIKMAT
(Tablet of Wisdom) in: Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh revealed after the
Kitáb-i-Aqdas,[39]
Modern era
Beginning in the early 16th century, there was great interest in
Apollonius in Europe, but the traditional ecclesiastical viewpoint
prevailed, and until the Age of Enlightenment the Tyanean was
usually treated as a demonic magician and a great enemy of the

Comparisons between Apollonius and Jesus became
commonplace in the 17th and 18th centuries in the context of
polemic about Christianity.[41] Several advocates of
Enlightenment, deism and anti-Church positions saw him as an
early forerunner of their own ethical and religious ideas, a
proponent of a universal, non-denominational religion
compatible with Reason. These comparisons continued into the
20th century.

12. It is important to note that the Dark Ages only applies to the
Western Empire, a recent TV programme set up an Aunt Sally
definition which included the Eastern Empire and the Islamic
nations and then pretended to show the Dark Ages never
happened. It did not happen all at once. There were post-Roman
kingdoms such as those of the Goths in northern Italy and the
Burgundians in south-east France who perpetuated Roman
systems for another generation or two.
When it ended is hotly disputed. Some would put it with the
reign of Charlemagne, others with Otto's Holy Roman Empire,
at one time it was put as far forward as the beginning of the
Renaissance. Personally I would favour the earlier date by which
we start to see proper kingship with a bureaucratic
administration not only in France and Italy, but even in England
under Alfred the Great. It is certainly on the wane by the time
the feudal system becomes established across Europe about
1000 AD.

Ages may have actually been associated with some dramatic

The dark ages was applied to areas of history about which there
was little information, the same dark as in 'Dark Continent', as
more information is found the period recedes.
The Early Middles Ages are the 5th to 10th centuries and the
Late , or High< Middle Ages are the 11th century to the Italian
Rennaisance. The term Dark Ages in modern times has been
used to mean the Early Middle Ages, but was used in various
ways before according to the Wikipedia article.
