1-The 5th wave followed the post-Second World War industrial
changes and innovations such as plastics, electronics, and the jet
engine (Comtois, Rodrigue, & Slack, 2013). The 5th Wave moves
beyond the industrial changes and focuses on information systems,
communications, and logistics (Comtois, Rodrigue, & Slack, 2013).
This is evident by the improvements and expansions seen in cellular
communications (Butterworth, 2010). Can anyone even remember
using 3G data services anymore? We quickly moved from just
making phone calls to being able to search the internet from a smart
phone utilizing 4G data services (Butterworth, 2010). The changes are
coming quickly, with new services and new devices hitting the market
faster than consumers can purchase. Other examples of technology
innovation in the 5th wave include internet, streaming television,
GPS, social networking, and mobile connectivity (Butterworth, 2010).
Transportation utilizes experimentation, introduction, adoption,
diffusion, and obsolescence when developing technology (Comtois,
Rodrigue, & Slack, 2013). In the world of transportation, innovation
in the 5th wave includes GPS tracking, RFIDs, logistics software.
There are some that believe we are soon to enter the 6th wave, if we
haven't already started a slow transition, which will focus more on
resource efficiency (Norgrady, 2010). There are companies, such as
the Hershey Company, that have pushed toward less waste or zero-
waste production facilities. Companies that have adopted policies to
utilize only sustainable products and resources. That could be
considered a move into the 6th wave. As resources become scarcer
and the concern for the environment increases, the movement towards
2. the 6th wave may overlap the end of the 5th wave expected 2020 time
frame. "Innovations are no longer the results of individual efforts, but
are organized and concerted actions whose results are rapidly diffused
(Comtois, Rodrigue, & Slack, 2013)." The time frames will
progressively become shorter moving from wave to wave. Are we
done with innovation in information systems as widely seen in the 5th
wave? No, we will continue to see changes, improvements, and new
systems and devices created even after movement into the 6th wave.
2-The 5th wave of technology centers on the computer. The biggest
piece of this we interact with daily is the internet. The first ripples of
this wave harken back to the Air Force’s Semi-Automatic Ground
Environment (SAGE) network and the Defense Advanced Research
Project Agency (DARPA) initial military network research (Burnam-
Fink, 2011). While this slowly reached the civilian world in the
1970s, it didn’t really become noticeable until the early 1980s. I
would say the 5th wave really started with the advent of the bulletin
board system (The BBS Corner, 2009). This enabled the first mass
digital data sharing. All types of information were posted on the
virtual
“cork-and-pin bulletin board” according to The BBS Corner’s report.
As modem speeds increased, the amount of information increased and
graphics were shared as well.
As the internet grew in prominence, it assimilated much of the
bulletin board structure, while expanding in new directions. Finally
weaned off telephone modems beginning with the 21st century, the
media content shot through the roof. Download speeds and file sizes
dwarf the capacities of computer hardware from the late 90’s. The
advances have started leveling off though. New breakthroughs are
slower in coming and people have settled in and started to get
comfortable with the new technology (Burnam-Fink, 2011). Still, the
business world is coming to grips with this and adapting (Butterworth,
2010). As this occurs over the next few years and we really start to
normalize, then the time will be ripe for the next big wave of
technology.
3. Looking out now, I see the 5th wave lasting past 2020 and even into
2030 before another innovative cycle begins. I say this because those
technologies that have the potential to turn into a major changer are
still small and extremely rare and expensive. Were I an oracle, my bet
would be interplanetary or deep sea living and manned exploration on
a large scale. We will have to wait and see how my vision turns out.

3-The fifth wave of technology innovation was also known as the
cataclysmic expansion of information and as well as the
communication technologies. The fifth wave innovation includes the
evolutions of mobile phones into life devices through the use of 3G,
GPS, cloud computing, and the so-called second generation
barcoding. As stated by (Butterworth, 2010), fifth wave technology
innovation is the time wherein the mobile internet has been massively
ramping up. Technology is still innovating and revolutionizing as
year’s passes by and it definitely change people’s lives, their daily
activities, and their outlook on life. Additionally, technology
4. especially the fifth wave technology have been affected the different
kinds of business industries.
One of the very simple example from this is the newspaper industry,
10 years before, the industry of newspaper is increasing rapidly.
However, when the technology and the internet improves, people used
to read news through their laptop, computers, and now even in their
tablets and phones. That is why many newspaper industries are now
being bankrupt because of the fifth wave technology. But the
innovation of technology have a lot of positive effects, in fact, the
fifth wave technology has a lot of advantages both to different kinds
of business industries and to the community. Even in terms of
transportation, there are specific cumulative waves of transport
development. The fifth wave in transport systems are the airports and
the containerships. During the late 1950’s, jet services have been
introduced because of this innovation, global mobility systems
advance wherein different kinds of locations can be accessible within
hours. (Rodrigue, et al, 2013). As of now, through the help of the fifth
wave technology innovation, there are several airport terminals
around the world wherein people were able to reach destinations in
the fastest way. On the other hand, containership which is part of the
maritime mode of transportation is also evolving. Nowadays, bulk
shipping becomes one of the fastest ways why our global commercial
relations has been innovating and improving. The trade and freight
transportation is now a global distribution system with the help of the
fifth wave technology innovation of transportation modes.
In my own opinion, the timeframe of the fifth wave which is 1990-
2020 is appropriate based on the changes happened for over 20 years.
As we all know, new methods of communication such as social media
and the invention of smartphones and other gadgets improve the way
we communicate now. Other improvements in different industries
have been already developed wherein through the use of the
technology, business industries were able to work and move in the
fastest way. And I think to start in the year 2020, we should expect
more improvement, development, and innovation.
