Tidiness is one of the foundation stones of good safety and environmental practice, remember rubbish
breeds rubbish. Many accidents are caused through people tripping, slipping and falling over materials and
equipment which should not have been left lying around. A great deal of environmental problems could be
avoided if materials were disposed of properly instead of being allowed to escape into the surrounding
area.
Housekeeping is an area where everyone working for Fabricom can make a significant contribution, merely
by applying common sense.
 Do not leave items or waste lying about - clean up as you go.
 Ensure all waste is disposed of and segregated into the correct skips / bins.
 Do not obstruct gangways, aisles or stairways with tools or materials.
 Make sure that spilled oil, grease or liquids are cleaned up from floors and the contaminated clean up
material is disposed of in the correct skip / bin. (If in doubt ask)
 Gather up all off-cuts of pipe, plate, reinforcing bars, and any other materials and dispose of in the
correct skip.
 Position all cables and hoses above head height where possible or around structures, do not lay them
across pedestrian walkways.
 Ensure all hot works are enclosed to prevent sparks from grinding, hot slag from welding and swarf
from drilling from falling on others or causing a fire.
 An accumulation of waste material provides a good starting point for fire. Do not let it happen.
 When clearing up, make sure the refuse disposal point is in a safe position and all waste containers
are clearly marked for their contents. Ensure the area is kept tidy and if bins/skips are full; do not add
to them as this will result in spillage. Inform your supervisor who will arrange for them to be
emptied.
Throughout this talk we have seen that proper waste disposal is an integral part of good housekeeping.
Not only does this improve site tidiness but it also improves safety and reduces the likelihood of accidents
and pollution occurring.
