1. NESHEP Meeting Review (7th February 2012)
Our February meeting was held at the Wilton International Centre at 10am. The turnout was great for the
first meeting of 2012 with over 50 attendees. Alan Bassett welcomed everybody and presented a learning
event which demonstrated a severe lack of judgment on the part of an operative who was standing on
hand rails to access his work area, facing a drop of at least 30 feet. The sad thing is you can clearly see a
MEWP in the photo which could have been utilised to mitigate the risk.

This document also adds a light hearted view of how things can go badly wrong when we don’t get our
communication right!
New Member Introduction
Stuart Shirreff gave a brief introduction to his demolition company, KDC. His presentation included videos
demonstrating two different demolition processes; the Risk Management System they are currently
working on and the outcomes they have achieved. DocLink – http://slidesha.re/wRWMh4
Sylvia Callaghan (Fabricom) gave an extremely moving and passionate account of the moth-balling of Corus
and the reopening of the blast furnace by SSI-UK. Sylvia began by introducing herself and explaining her
past history in British Steel and the impact of the steel industry in our region. Sylvia went on to describe
how the moth-balling of Corus had affected her and the thousands of people who had lost their jobs. She
shared a DVD with us that captured the life of the steel industry on Teesside, culminating in SSI-UK
purchasing the site to continue steelwork production and the revival of 1000’s of new jobs.
Sylvia then went on to explain the operation of the blast furnace and the associated risks they are facing
with the clean up, restoration, multi-level/multi-discipline working and adverse weather conditions. Sylvia
emphasised the importance of health & safety and the huge effort that SSI-UK are making with their
systems, procedures and work practices, ensuring as far as possible an ‘incident free’ start-up. She also
explained how SSI-UK are seeing the benefits of using the EMSS Competency Scheme and the National
Safety Passport.
Sylvia ended her presentation with a final DVD which was a tribute to the workforce, past & present. She
explained how the tribute was made when Corus was moth-balled and how meaningful it was to her and
the people of the steelwork industry and to the future of SSI-UK.
A copy of the presentation will follow to those that are interested…
2. New ‘fit for purpose’ Supervisors Qualification
In the absence of Dave Swalwell (Deborah Services); Mick Stephenson (DP Consultancy NE) gave a brief
update on the new ‘Supervisors Qualification’ and explained how the qualification would work and how it
would benefit the individuals and the companies that support it. The course is aimed at higher education
(Level 4 - 30 UCPD) and is being developed in association with Teesside University. The Training &
Development Subgroup are looking for providers, contractors and clients to get involved, to ensure the
qualification is ‘fit for purpose’. An outline scope will be published shortly together with a flyer for
comment.
The meeting was closed by our chairman Alan Bassett and members had time to network and share best
practice.
