1. BROADCAST MEDIA ROLE IN SEXUAL BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE: THE USE
OF DOCU-DRAMA ON GBAGADA YOUTHS IN LAGOS STATE.
INTRODUCTION
This paper aims at the role of the broadcast media – television and radio – plays
in the messages and campaigns on sexual behavior and the resultant change with
the use of docu-drama in behavioral change on the youths Gbagada (a town in
Kosofe local Government, Lagos State).
Sexual behavior among youths and adults in recent times pose a serious threat
and great challenges to the growth of the population as well as health
implications. Reckless sexual behavior resulted into high level of teenage
pregnancy, abortions, sexually transmitted diseases and infections, school
dropouts, as a result of early sexual contacts.
In Kenya, one of the greatest problems facing the youths in that country is the
HIVAIDS syndrome, which has led to the deaths of millions of youth in the
productive years. It has been observed that the increase in the numbers of people
affected with sexually transmitted diseases in the African continent can be
attributed to the fact that youths are often insensitive to the various media
campaigns on television and radio across the country. (Gakahu Nancy, 2010).
The broadcast media (RTV) has been used in recent times to evolve methods that
focus on individual change of attitudes and behavior. This is because the medium
has been found to be a powerful source of sexual information for youths and
adolescents which affect their beliefs and behavior especially in society that is
closed up on sexual matters. (Steel, 1999).
This paper examines the issues involved in the spread of STDs despite the various
media campaigns on television and radio on how these diseases are transmitted
and the resultant health implications, yet these have not been reflecting in their
sexual practices. It also tends to make recommendations on how the broadcast
