8. India has a long-standing tradition of serving food on banana leaves.
These thick leaves are big enough to serve a multi-course meal
Food when served on banana leaves gets enriched with several
nutrients.
Anti-oxidant rich
Packed with polyphenols which are also found in green
tea and some leafy vegetables, banana leaves are rich in
anti-oxidants that help prevent ageing, lifestyle disease
and some types of cancer
Chemical-Free
Eating in a banana leaf saves you from licking the
chemical residue of your washing powder or gel that
lurks in unnoticed on your plate. Also, it saves you from
the dangerous chemicals that can be found on thermocol
or plastic plates.
https://akilasenglishclass.blogspot.com/
9. Hygienic
These leaves have a waxy exterior and hence they are easy to
clean as dust does not stick to them. Just wash them off and use
them to eat food. They should also be preferred by you in the
restaurants as they are definitely cleaner than the utensils you are
served food in.
Eco-friendly
While plastic and thermocol plates add to the mound of landfills
as they are non-bio degradable and take many years to break
down. But banana leaves are eco-friendly and can be turned into
manure.
Convenient
Instead of wasting water in cleaning your utensils, eating on
banana leaves (if they are easily available) is not just convenient,
but also saves your time and energy in doing the dishes. What a
healthy escape from the mound of dishes in the sink.

10. The Black Hole of Calcutta was
a small prison or dungeon in Fort
William where troops of Siraj-ud-
Daulah the Nawab of Bengal, held
British prisoners of war for three
days on 20 June 1756.
John Zephaniah Holwell, one of
the British prisoners and an
employee of the East India
Company, said that, after the fall
of Fort William, the surviving
British soldiers, Anglo-Indian
soldiers, and Indian civilians were
imprisoned overnight in
conditions so cramped that many
people died from suffocation and
heat exhaustion, and that 123 of
146 prisoners of war imprisoned
there died.
https://akilasenglishclass.blogspot.com/
11. These English prisoners, which
included some women and children
too, were lodged in the prison room
of the fort for a night. The prison
room was 18 feet long and 14 feet
wide. The number of prisoners is
told to be 146 and clearly the room
was too small to hold such a large
number of people.
Yet Nawab's army shut up these
many prisoners in the room. They
cramped for space. In the scorching
heat of June, excessive perspiration
and suffocation took a heavy toll.
Many died in the night itself. The
next morning, when the prison
window was opened, these
suffocating prisoners trampled one
over another to get near the
window.

to comfort it.

Shakuntala was lost in thoughts of Dushyanta
and paid no attention.
The sage was insulted and got very angry.
Known for his temper, he cursed Shakuntala
saying that the person whom she was thinking
about would forget her.
When Shakuntala heard the curse, she was
frightened and begged the sage to forgive her.

forest and would play with wild animals.

As soon as the king saw the ring, the curse was broken and the
king remembered Shakuntala. He was very upset and hurried at

happy to have found Shakuntala and asked the
boy to take him to his mother.
The family was united and Dushyanta took
Shakuntala and Bharata along with him to

21. Once upon a time there was an old he-goat. One day,
when it was getting dark, he was returning home with
many other goats. He was old and weak, and when he
got tired he was left behind. It became quite dark, and
as he could not find her way back, he decided to enter
a cave that he saw nearby. What was his surprise
when he went in and found a lion sitting there! He
was terribly frightened and stood still for a moment,
then he thought of what he could do.
"If I try to run," he thought, "the lion will soon
catch me, but if I pretend not to be afraid of
him I may manage to save my life."
He walked boldly up to the lion as if he were
not afraid of him at all. The lion looked at him,
looked and looked, not knowing what to think
of this boldness of a goat. He knew goats had
never dared to come near him. At last he
thought he could not be a goat but must be
some other strange animal which he had not
seen before. https://akilasenglishclass.blogspot.com/
22. "Who are you, old one?" he asked him.
"I am the King of the Goats," he replied. "I came to
devour a hundred tigers, twenty-five elephants and ten
lions. I have already eaten the hundred tigers and the
twenty five elephants and now I am looking for the
ten lions.“
The lion was very much surprised to hear this, and
believing the goat had really come to devour him, got
out of the cave saying that he was going to wash his
face in the river.
As he was rushing out he met a jackal, who seeing the
King of the beasts in a panic, asked what the matter
was. The lion told the jackal about his meeting with
what he said was a strange-looking animal, very much
like a goat, but who was not afraid of him at all.
The jackal was very clever. He soon guessed that the
cause of the lion's fear was only a poor old he-goat.
And he told the lion that it was the boldness of a weak
old animal who didn't wish to be devoured.
https://akilasenglishclass.blogspot.com/
23. "Come back with me to your cave, and make a
meal of this pretender," he suggested.
The lion returned with the jackal. When the goat
saw the lion returning, he understood everything,
but he did not lose her courage. He walked up
towards them and said to the jackal: "Is this the
way you carry out my orders? I sent you to get
me ten lions to eat at once, and you have brought
me only one!“
As soon as the lion heard this, he thought he had
been betrayed by the jackal. He fell on him and
tore him to pieces.
Seeing this the goat walked out of the cave and
ran away as quickly as he could.
