1. The production department of Celltronics International wants to explore the relationship
between the number of employees who assemble a subassembly and the number produced. As
an experiment , two employees were assigned to assemble the subassemblies. They produced 15
during a one-hour period. Then four employees assembled them. They produced 25 during a
one-hour period. The complete set of paired observations follows.
Number of Assemblers One Hour production (units)
2 15
4 25
1 10
5 40
3 30
The dependent variable is production; that is, it is assumed that the level of production depends
upon
the number of employees.
a. Draw a scatter diagram
b. Based on the scatter diagram, does there appear to be any relationship between the number of
assemblers and production? Explain.
c. Compute the coefficient of correlation
d. Evaluate the strength of the relationship by computing the coefficient of determination.
2. The owner of Lindsey VW wants to study the relationship between the age of the car and its
selling price. Listed below is a random sample of 12 used cars sold at the dealership during the
last year.
Car Age (years) Selling price ($ Thousands)
1 9 8.1
2 7 6.0
3 11 3.6
4 12 4.0
5 8 5.0
6 7 10.0
7 8 7.6
8 11 8.0
9 10 8.0
10 12 6.0
11 6 8.6
12 6 8.0
a. If we want to estimate selling price on the basis of the age of the car, which variable is the
dependent
variable and which is the independent variable?
b. Draw a scatter diagram
c. Determine the coefficient of correlation
d. Determine the coefficient of determination
e. Interpret these statistical measures. Does it surprise you that the relationship is inverse?
3. The following sample observations were randomly selected.
X: 5, 3, 6, 3, 4, 4, 6, 8
Y: 13, 15, 7, 12, 13, 11, 9, 5
a. Determine the regression equation
b. Determine the value of Y(hat) when X=7
Solution
1) The correlation coefficient r is r = { - } / { sqrt( - ^2) sqrt( - ^2) } where is the
average of x. Here it doesn't matter which column are x-values and which column are y-values.
d) The coefficient of determination r^2 is, well, r^2. Zero is uncorrelated, one is perfectly
correlated. 3)Determine the .95 confidence interval for the mean predicted when X=7 The
formula is in the link. This is the first one. Y-hat +/- S2 t(n-2) Y-hat is the predicted value when
x=7 (you have used x=6; redo with x=7) plug x=7; x^2=49; find x-bar = mean of x when you
calculate S2^2 The procedure to compute S2^2 is explained. Take the square root to find S2. t(n-
2)=t(6) = 2.447 (from t-probability table) b) Second formula The confidence interval is yhat +/-
S3 t(n-2) t=2.447 S3 is slightly different from S2; You still substitute x=7, x^2=49; xbar=mean
of x hope this helps

Here it doesn't matter which column are x-values and which column are y-values. d) The coefficient of determination r^2 is, well, r^2. Zero is uncorrelated, one is perfectly correlated. 3)Determine the .95 confidence interval for the mean predicted when X=7 The formula is in the link. This is the first one. Y-hat +/- S2 t(n-2) Y-hat is the predicted value when x=7 (you have used x=6; redo with x=7) plug x=7; x^2=49; find x-bar = mean of x when you calculate S2^2 The procedure to compute S2^2 is explained. Take the square root to find S2. t(n- 2)=t(6) = 2.447 (from t-probability table) b) Second formula The confidence interval is yhat +/- S3 t(n-2) t=2.447 S3 is slightly different from S2; You still substitute x=7, x^2=49; xbar=mean of x hope this helps
