Conceptual
In the eyes of post modernism
there is no right and no wrong,
what we perceive as truth is only
an interpretation and subjective to
the person.
We are stirred to believe in what
the majority think is true through
the power of media and
propaganda.
Simulacra
Simulation
In a post modern world
there is a thin line
between what is real and
what is imagined. It is the
idea that the media
determines what we
believe is real, for
example, perceptions on
some religions can be
biased and we are left to
believe one thing where as
the truth is another.
Likewise, the real world or
dream world could be
portrayed as reality. Our
society is made up of
simulations of reality
which replace the pure
reality.
Culture
Post modernism is an era
where there is no longer
any new additions, instead
we tend to repeat on old
trends and look back on
ourselves. We have lost
contact with the real world
and live inside of the
media, for example
through mobile phones.
Art
There is the idea that
everything is art,
there no longer has
to be a skill but an
interpretation and a
concept.
Bricolage
The term is used to
define how
something could
mean something in
one context but
mean something
different in another.
Narrative
Contemporary
narratives will often
stray away from a
typical happy ending
in films whereas
meta narratives
usually have ironic,
or unfinished
endings.
Dictionary
Definition
A style and concept
in the arts
characterised by a
distrust of theories
and ideologies and
by the drawing of
attention to
conventions.
Baudrillard and
Lyotard
Both philosophers shared
the idea that truth needs to
be deconstructed so that the
majority of what is
perceived as truth can be
challenged. This is described
as ‘Grand Narratives’.
Culture eats
itself
We are in a
generation where
there are copies
of copies. There
are replicas and
artificial.
Mediation
We are stuck in
the media world
rather than the
real and we have
to consciously
step out of this
state rather than
the other way
round.
