Diseases related with food
1. DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD
Natural disorders due to food shortage
Today there are still many people in the world with their health and quality of life
suffering because of LACK OF FOOD!!! (as a result of war, poverty, diseases,
politics,etc).
MARASMUS: generally in early childhood.
Body adapts to famine
Signs and symptoms
Retarded growth
Underweight
No adipose tissue
Muscular depletion
Skinny limbs
Brain affected
Learning problems
Social problems
Fatigue
Prone to infections
KWASHIORKOR: diet generally based on only 1 cereal (no animal food), poor
protein quantity and quality.
Poor adaptation to famine.
Signs and symptoms
Big swallen abdomen
Skinny limbs
Oedemas (swollen face, hands, feet, due to water accumulation)
Prone to infections
Retarded growth
Fatigue
Death
Treatment: Long and difficult.
When re-feeded they suffer from diarrhea, vomiting as they are not use to food.
Nutritional disorders due to an unwise food choice.
It is a disturbing fact that people suffer from health disorders because of :
- EXTRA CONSUME OF FOOD
- NOT EATING SUFFICIENT FOOD
HEART DISEASE: coronary artery gets blocked
Cholesterol is a protein that transports saturated fats which sticks to the inner
walls of arteries and veins. Blood cannot pass, heart needs to do an extra effort to
pump blood through those blocked arteries.
2. Blood carries NUTRIENTS + OXYGEN, if they do not pass the region of heart
without those things will suffer in the long run a heart attack.
Risk factors:
Smoking
Alcohol abuse they can be modified
Excess of saturated fat
Stress
High blood pressure
Age
Sex they can not be modified
Genetics
Treatment: dietary guidelines, reduce risk factors (avoid smoking, alcohol,
drugs), medication, practice more sports, be on normal weight.
2)OBESITY: excess of body weight.
Causes 95% due to excess of consumption
5% due metabolic disorders
Consequences
heart diseases (extra strain to the heart),high blood cholesterol
type 2 diabetes, heart problems, kidneys failure, eye problems
knees and legs problems, limited movement
gall bladder stones may be produced
kidneys and liver problems, difficulties in operations
depression
discrimination, lack of self confidence, low self esteem
treatment: low caloric diet + exercise
stomach bending in extreme cases
ANOREXIA NERVOSA:
- patient refuses to eat because she /he sees her?him self fat! (although she / he is
not at all!)
- body image distortion
4)BULIMIA NERVOSA: patients eat compulsively and perform compensation
mechanism like: Vomiting, a lot of exercise, taking laxatives etc.
5) TOOTH DECAY:
Bacteria digest food left over between teeth . After eating that sugar, bacteria from
mouth turn the sugars into acids which dissolve teeth enamel and cavities are formed.
Causes: excess of sugar and sticky food, lack of tooth hygiene, lack of fluor in diet
Treatment: proper teeth hygiene, reduce sugary food, visit dentist regularly
3. 6) DIABETES MELLITUS: glucose carried in blood to all body cells to supply them
with energy.
The insuline is done by pancreas and is like the “key” of the cells, without insuline the
cells will not open so no glucose can enter them and no energy can be produced there.
If glucose does not get into cell , it stays very high in blood.
Extra glucose in blood will be released by urine (here diabetes will be detected).
Patients are very hungry and they lose weigh, general weakness (no energy is done!)
Causes: may be present at birth or may develop at any age as a consequence of obesity!
(bad choice of food)
Treatment: insulin inyections required
Carbohydrates controlled diet
Hypoglucemiants tablets
C) Diseases associated with some specific food
1)COELIAC DISEASE: chronic inflammation of the inner part of the intestine caused
by the presence of GLIADINA (normal protein in many cereals: Wheat, oat, barley,
rye.
Signs and symptoms: anemia, rickets or osteomalasia, weigh loss, colon cancer, blood
in feaces
Treatment : eat gluten free cereals and foods
Avoid food containing wheat, oat, barley, rye
No problem with fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses (legumbres), meat, maize, rice, soy,
dairy products, VERY CAREFULL WITH BRANDS!!!.
There are foods that have been added with flour, starch. ( for example “ham”)
2)LACTOSE INTOLERANCE: enzyme “lactase” is absent or is not enough so lactose
(sugar) from dairy products is not digested.
Signs and symptoms: diarrhea, swollen abdomen, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache,
skin rush.
Treatment: include lactose- free milk.
In yogurt, lactose is joined with caseinogen protein.
No lactose is present in hard cheese.
