4. ACHIEVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY &
GHG EMISSION EDUCTIONS in ICT
1. Maximize the use of renewable energy to power ICT
infrastructures and applications
Leverage virtualization (clouds) in low-carbon data centers.
2. Develop GHG emission standards for ICT
ISO14064 protocol suite is difficult to apply in the ICT sector.
Standards currently in development (IEEE Green ICT initiative).
3. Integrate the ICT industry in future low-carbon economies
Use ICT carbon standards in cap & trade regimes:
E.g. USA & Canada: Western Climate Initiative, Regional GHG Initiative.
Focus on end-user behavior & incentives (not just the network).
