1. NOTES Subjects & Predicates
There are two types of subjects & two types of predicates
Subjects: complete and simple
Predicates: complete and simple
--Every complete sentence has two basic parts: a subject & a predicate.
--The complete subject includes all words that tell whom or what the sentence is about. (Everything to the
LEFT of the verb, excluding the verb)
EX Wildlife conservationists monitor endangered animals.

EX Endangered animals need protection.

--The complete predicate includes the verb and all the words that tell what the subject is or what the subject
does. (Everything to the RIGHT of the verb, including the verb.)
EX Wildlife conservationists monitor endangered animals.

EX Endangered animals need protection.
Simple Subjects & Simple Predicates
--The simple subject is the main word or words in the complete subject. (noun) *Will be only one word, unless
it’s a name or title.*
EX People in a large city lead busy lives.
EX Councilman Johnson in our ward cares about neighborhood concerns.
--The simple predicate, or VERB, is the main word or words in the complete predicate. (verb or verb phrase)
EX Many people have interesting hobbies.
EX Hobbies can entertain you for years.
