Lesson 3
1. LESSON 3 – THE PARTICLE “ET” אֶת
I. The word “et” is untranslatable, but its presence indicates that the
following noun is definite.
RULES of usage
1. When a verb is followed by a direct object which is definite (with
the definite article " ה" ), precedes it:
The boy closes the door – . הילד סוגר את הדֶלֶת
2. 2. When proper nouns (names of people, places or things) are
used as direct objects in a sentence, appears before it despite the
absence of the definite article.
Nino loves Shirley. – . נינו אוהב את שירלי
3. When the direct object is a definite noun together with a
possessive pronoun. In English, the possessive pronoun makes the
noun definite and the article “the” is not needed, but in Hebrew את ה
is required in a sentence:
He reads his book. – . הוא קורא את הספר שלו
3. II. POSITION of the DEFINITE ARTICLE with words in combination
•Words in Hebrew formed by two words have the definite article
attached to the second word:
בית הספר The school בית ספר a school
חדר הרחצה The bathroom חדר רחצה a bathroom
חדר המטות The bedroom חדר מטות a bedroom
הית החולים The hospital הית חולים a hospital
