Long time ago, there was a pretty maiden who lived during the reign of Sultan Abdullah

her out of jealousy by Mahura, her very own mother-in-law for her magnetic personality. Mahura
bitterly objected to her husband's intentions of taking Mahsuri as his second wife and eventually
agreed that their son, Mat Deris should seek the hand of Mahsuri in marriage. Since then,
Mahura had grown bitterly jealous of Mahsuri for whom she bore much hatred.
In time, Mahsuri gave birth to a baby boy and he was named Mat Arus. This inflamed Mahura
even more. Mahsuri was accused of having a relationship with Deramang, a young troubadour

There was a poor man who lived with his wife. They lived in an old house at the end of a

One day, the farmer was surprised. One of the geese had laid a golden egg. “Come!
Come and see this!” he called out to his wife. She came running to the coop. She was surprised

“Our goose has laid a golden egg!” she shouted happily. “We will be rich when we sell
this golden egg!” The farmer later went to town. He sold the golden egg to a goldsmith. He was
happy to get a lot of money for it. “If the goose lays a golden egg each day, we will be very rich
soon!” the farmer said to his wife. The farmer’s wish came true. The next day, he went to see
the goose again. It had laid another golden egg.
The farmer had a lot of money now. The goose laid a golden egg every day. The farmer

Another great emergency happened everywhere. The stepmother told the woodcutter to
leave the children in the forest again, even further in the forest this time. With a heavy heart the
woodcutter agreed. Hansel and Gretel were still awake and overheard the conversation. Hansel
wanted to gather pebbles as he had done before but he found the door was locked. He told
Gretel who was crying to not worry because he will find a way.
With no pebbles available, Hansel crumbled the piece of bread, which his stepmother
gave him and dropped the crumbs onto the ground when they were on their way to the forest
the next morning. He did not notice that birds came and ate the crumbs after they had cleared
the path. So, when night came, Hansel and Gretel could not find their way home again after
being left deep in the woods. They started to worry but they tried searching for their way home
until the morning came but they were still unsuccessful.
Tired and hungry, they continued their search when they saw a cozy little house. They
went closer and saw that the house was built entirely of bread, the roof made of marzipans and
the windows were made of clear sugar. Hansel and Gretel who were famished immediately

The first one said, “Oh, what can we see?”
The second one said, “I can see a tail.”
The third one said, “It must be a whale!”
The fourth one said, “She’s looking for lunch,”
The fifth one said, “She’ll eat us in one munch!”
Five little fishy, swimming side by side, cried.
“Oh, where, oh where, oh where, can we hide?”

An old man was sitting with his 14-year-old son in the train. As the train started to move
the boy was filled with much joy and curiousity. As he looked out of the window, he shouted,
“Dad, look at all the lovely trees! Dad, look at that lake!” Wiping the tears in his eyes, the old
man smiled. The other passengers were staring at the boy but the old man took no notice of
them.
Jeremy, a labourer, had been with his son, James for a number of weeks in hospital.
Today, he was the happiest man in the world. He could hardly wait to show James to his
mother, Emelda, a housewife. James, their only son, could not see since birth. Moreover, poor
James was always out of breath whenever he had asthma attacks.
As they stepped into their little wooden house by the sea, James ran in. He was familiar
with the pieces of furniture around him. Then, his mother cried, “My dear boy!” James could
recognize his mother’s voice.
“Mum! Mum!” his voice was choked with emotions and then he continued,” I can see
Dad.” His mother had prepared lots of delicious dishes that were James’ favourites. At the
dinner table, James told his parents that he wanted to continue learning Braille even though he
could see now.

Once upon a time, a city mouse wanted to visit his cousin in the country. The country mouse
was rough and loud but he loved his cousin very much and welcomed him to the country
heartily. A few kernels of corns and a couple of dried berries were all he had to offer, but he
offered them all to the city mouse freely. “My poor cousin, you hardly have anything to eat! Even
the ants have something better to eat! Please do come to the city and visit me, you will see rich
feasts and readily available food for the taking, “ said the city mouse.
So the country mouse left for the city’s alley with his cousin. The country mouse could
not believe his eyes. He had never seen so much food in one place. There were bread, cheese,
fruits and cereals in a warm cozy portion of the alley.
The two mice ventured out of the hole and resumed their abundant feast. Before they
could get a proper taste in their mouth, another visitor intruded on their dinner, and the two little
mice had to scuttle away quickly.
"Goodbye," said the country mouse, "You do, indeed, live in a plentiful city, but I am going
home where I can enjoy my dinner in peace! "

Villa Sentosa, a traditional Malay house in Kampung Morten, Melaka, was built in 1920. It was
constructed without a single nail by one of the village founders and headman, Haji Hashim
Datuk Demang Haji Abdul Ghani. Being part of national heritage, Villa Sentosa features
traditional Mala architecture and is a treasure trove of antiques.
The house is mainly made of timber with an inner courtyard and minimal partitions for interior
walls. This allows for good ventilation and lighting. Furniture is also kept to the minimum and
most of the activities are done on the floor.
Haji Hashim’s descendants, who still live in the house, have turned it into a museum, exhibiting
the heirlooms he left. Among them is a 500-year-old Majapahit dagger, 100-year-old Quran, a
traditional Malay wedding gown and old costumes, ceramics from the Ming Dynasty and medals
which Haji Hashim received for his service to the government. Other valuable souvenirs include
