2. WHAT IS A LETTER WRITING
Writing a letter is important in
maintaining personal or professional
relationships and developing and
promoting oneâs ideas language and
culture.
3. TYPES OF LETTERS
Letters are of two types :
1. Formal letters
2. Informal letters
Formal Letters:
ď police officers, principalâs, Editors, Business related, or any other higher
authority people.
ď Generally be short and to the point.
Informal Letters:
ď Family members, Relatives, FriendsâŚ.
ď Usually be in the casual and conversational form.
ď Written for social purposes such as asking someoneâs well-being,
congratulating them, apologizing to them, or expressing gratitude and sympathy.
4. HOW TO WRITE A LETTER
⢠Before writing a letter, first we should know the Type, Tone and Pattern of
the letter.
⢠Type â Formal / Informal
Tone â Happy, Sad or Informational
Example :
ď§ If you want to appreciate your friend for his success the tone of a letter be
happy.
ď§ If you want to write a letter for regret the tone of a letter be sad.
ď§ If you want to write a letter to the principal or Editor regarding any issue the
tone of a letter be Informational.
5. PATTERN OF A LETTER
⢠We are having two patterns of letter
1. Traditional Pattern / Indented / conventional (Standard/Regular)
2. Modern Pattern / Blocked / Current Style Format
In both these patterns the parts of the letter will be same but the
positions will be different.
In Traditional letter the punctuation marks are used distinctly in
each part of the letter.
In Modern pattern everything starts from the left margin and the
punctuation marks are omitted in all parts except in the body of the letter.
6. Modern pattern of a letter sample format

⢠The first part of the formal letter is âAddressâ. It consists of
1. Senderâs address
2. Date
3. Receiverâs address
4. Subject ( for what purpose you are writing the letter)
5. Salutation / Greeting (Respected Sir/Mam, Dear sir/mam)

ď Reason for writing the letter.

ď It contains details related to the subject of the letter.

ď conclude your paragraph by sharing your opinion.
14. Traditional Format of a sample letter
Write a letter to your friend inviting her to join you on the walk-to-college programme
organized by your college.

Dear Anil,
I am writing to invite you for a one day âwalk-to-collegeâ programme organized by our college. It will be held on Monday, the 29th
August, 2020.
The participants have to meet at the entrance of the Nature Park at 7.30 a.m. and the walk will start at 8.00 a.m. we will take the
path through the park and exit at the gate near our college.
It will be fun to walk through the park in the morning. There are different types of trees all around and the park has various birds
too. We will also get to see the beautiful types of flowers and plants growing along the path. Walking through the park will be a good exercise
and we will be able to breathe in fresh and clean air. I am sure it will be a wonderful experience.
It is not compulsory for you to take part, but I would really like for you to come along. We would carry some seeds for the birds and
even click pictures for our science project. Please do let me know if you can join us. Hoping to see you at the park.
