Examples of the types of participation
While this obviously isn’t the only way to create a discussion, these examples should be helpful to you in identifying “what is” each level of participation.
Discussion about building a house-Original part of comment you are responding to:
The use of laminated beams in today’s building materials greatly reduces the need for other materials like steel beams.
Excellent
Very true, our text states that laminated beams are also more structurally sound and are made from young growth trees. By using laminated beams you can also reduce the number of regular wood beams you use. In essence, using these beams is also good for our environment-less lumber harvesting. Do you think architects are using more of these in today’s housing construction or do you think some still adhere to “old school” methods?
Average
Good point-I hadn’t thought about how it could reduce the need for steel beams. Laminated beams allow for the same load bearing strength without the cost and overall weight of a steel beam. I wonder if the steel industry is impacted at all by the introduction of laminated beams.
Below Average
Good point- I agree.

CSU Online Library
There is a virtual library with resources, including both journals
and ebooks, to support your program and your course at
Columbia Southern University. eResources are accessible 24
hours a day/7 days a week from the CSU Online Library
gateway page. To access the library, log into myCSU, and then
click on CSU Online Library. Resources are organized in
the library by title, but if you click on Research Guides, you
will find eResources arranged by subject.
The Library Reference service is available 7 days a week; you
can reach CSU’s virtual librarians by emailing
[email protected] These professional librarians will be glad to
help you develop your research
plan or to assist you in any way in finding relevant, appropriate,
and timely information.
Librarian responses may occur within minutes or hours, but it
will never take more than 24 hours for a librarian to send a
response to the email address you have provided. Replies to
reference requests may include customized keyword search
strategies, links to videos, research guides, screen captures,
attachments, a phone call, live screen sharing, and meeting
room appointments, as well as other forms of instruction.
7. Unit Assignments
Unit IV Research Paper Topic
In this course, you are asked to prepare a Research Paper on a
construction-related fall accident. To prepare you for the
Research Paper, you will need to gain some knowledge and
familiarity of construction accidents. Search the Internet, the
CSU Online Library, safety organizations, or use an accident
you are familiar with to complete the following:
Write at least two pages of your initial thoughts about the
accident. Include the following elements:
Format your paper topic using APA style. Use your own words,
and include citations and references as needed to avoid
plagiarism. The accident must be a construction accident.
Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for
this assignment is provided below.
Unit V Article Review
For this assignment, choose a peer-reviewed article to review.
Use the databases within the CSU Online Library, or use
8. another source that contains peer-reviewed articles. The purpose
of this assignment is for you to practice reviewing
articles that contribute to the industry. The authors of these
articles are researchers and professionals who have shared or
experimented with ideas that demonstrate potential to improve
the industry.
As a professional in the industry, it is in your best interest to
review the literature and trends. This provides you with the
opportunity to read about what was successful and how it was
accomplished. In addition, this assignment allows you to
analyze what was unsuccessful, how you can improve it, or at
least how you can avoid repeating the mistakes of others.
You can use these skills to contribute to research papers and
other scholarly writings.
As you read the article you choose for this assignment, consider
the following questions:
professional life?
mailto:[email protected]
BOS 3401, Construction Safety 3
The article you choose must meet the following requirements:
9. his course (Try to choose an
article that contributes to your research paper.)
The writing you submit must meet the following requirements:
entify the author’s intended audience
Format your Article Review using APA style. Use your own
words, and include citations and references as needed to
avoid plagiarism. Be sure to include a cover page.
Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for
this assignment is provided below.
Unit VI Research Paper Outline
By now, you have had the opportunity to review research topics
regarding falls in construction, select one, and briefly
reflect on the topic. In order to stay on track and continue
making progress on the Unit VIII Research Paper, prepare an
outline with the major headings or topic sentences. An outline is
a great way to provide organization for papers and
projects. For this assignment, it is not intended for you to write
an accident analysis or investigation. You may use an
accident(s) to support your research, but it cannot be the focus
of your paper. Your outline should include the following:
10. the topic,
have to include more than the heading.)
APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and
listing of sources are to be followed.
You do NOT have to commit to the details of your outline until
the Research Paper is finished. As you continue to
research the topic and draft the paper, the organization of your
thoughts (i.e., the details of the outline) may evolve. That
is expected and acceptable. To organize those thoughts, it is a
good idea to begin with an outline.
Use your own words, and include citations and references as
needed to avoid plagiarism.
Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for
this assignment is provided below.
Unit VIII Research Paper
Falls are one of the leading causes of death and injuries in the
construction industry. Your final assignment is to write a
research paper on falls in construction. It is not intended for
you to write an accident analysis or a paper on OSHA. Your
paper should use an accident(s) to support your research, but
should not be the focus of your paper. It is also not necessary
to give the name of an injured person, describe the effect on
11. family, and give the OSHA violation and fine amount, etc., as
they are not desired in this paper.
An acceptable example would be falls from ladders, to include:
1. What are the common causative factors?
2. What does data indicate?
3. What are the effective proven corrective measures?
Always remember the most important aspect of a research paper
is the summary analysis by the writer of the research.
including the cover page or reference page.
more than one or two references.
The Unit VIII Research Paper is 30% of your final grade.

Blackboard Grading Rubrics
Assignment Rubrics
One or more assignments in this course utilizes a Blackboard
Grading Rubric. A rubric is a tool that lists evaluation criteria
and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements
of an assignment. Your professor will use the Blackboard
Grading Rubric to assign points and provide feedback for the
assignment.
You are encouraged to view the assignment rubric before
submitting your work. This will allow you to review the
evaluation criteria as you prepare your assignments. You may
access the rubric in “My Grades” through the “Tools” button
in your course menu. Click the “View Rubric” link to see the
evaluation criteria for the assignment. Upon receiving your
assignment grade, you may view your grade breakdown and
feedback in the rubric.
CSU Grading Rubrics for Papers/Projects and Assessments
The Learning Resource area of the myCSU Student Portal
13. provides the rubrics, and information on how to use them, for
written response questions in Unit Assessments, and Research
Papers/Projects.
The course writing assignments will be graded based on the
CSU Grading Rubric for all types of writing assignments,
unless otherwise specified within assignment instructions. In
addition, all papers will be submitted for electronic evaluation
to rule out plagiarism. Course projects will contain project-
specific grading criteria defined in the project directions.
To view the rubrics, click the Academic Policies link on the
Course Menu or access them through the CSU Grading Rubric
link found in the Learning Resources area of the myCSU
Student Portal.
Communication Forums
These are non-graded discussion forums that allow you to
communicate with your professor and other students.
Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged, but not
required. You can access these forums with the buttons in
the Course Menu. Instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to
