During the rising phase of the neuronal action potential, the sodium activation gates are closed, the sodium inactivation gates are open, and the potassium channels are closed. This allows sodium ions to continue flowing into the neuron through the sodium channels, further depolarizing the membrane as the action potential reaches its peak.
