2. In the opening 30 seconds there is
automatically light but yet sinister
music playing in the background and
the fact that there’s sewing and a
button shows us that there may be
something to do with making
something, with the sinister music
playing along side this shows and
tells the audience that the intentions
aren't going to be good but we also
know they’re not going to be that
bad because the age rating is a PG.
Once the opening credits finish the
sinister music keeps playing and a
doll flies through the window ‘as if by
magic’ this shows us that it may be
being controlled and the eyes are
buttons so instantly we think back to
the title when the film was first
introduced we will relate the buttons
with eyes and now expect to see
them later on in the film again.
3. We then see an unfamiliar type of hand
but we don’t think its abnormal because
in horror films we are used to there
being a monster from out of the norm.
We also see that its on a table full of
utensils so we know the monster is part
of the dolls appearance.
We then watch the monster editing
the doll (taking out the old eyes and
taking out the old stuffing, turning it
inside and re-stuffing it) this
obviously shows us that the previous
doll was old, worn and used but this
new doll will be nice and new for its
new owner. The fact that the monster
has control over how the doll looks
suggests that it may have power over
the owner as well.
4. Here we see the hand searching
for the new buttons obviously for
the new dolls eyes, there are
many buttons and this implies
that the monsters intention is to
re-use the doll as much as she can,
we have now developed an
understanding that the eyes of the
doll will always be buttons and we
know and expect it more for the
rest of the film.
We then see the finished doll and the
hands and the same window as
before but this time the monster is
letting go of the doll not taking it in,
this shows the audience that the
monster is out to get whoever may
own the doll next (as we learn later
on in the film this is correct). The
sinister music all the way through
again tells us the monster intentions
are bad, but again, obviously not
that bad because of the age rating.
