Conclusions/Justification:
Hip Hop Connection is an English music
magazine first issued in 1988. Its final issue
was in 2009 and was recognised as one of the
best magazines devoted to hip hop. I was able
to identify the target audience for this
magazine based on the conventions used. For
example, the main image is of a famous black
rapper which appeals to other rap fans.
Therefore, using this specific convention I
identified the target audience.
2. Target audience analysis:
Gender: Unisex
Race: All races
Age: 16-30
Geo-demographics: USA, Canada, UK
Socio-economics: B , Middle management, teachers,
liberal professionals (fairly well paid professionals)
Psychographic profile: Mainstreamers, those who shop
at high designer brands, hip hop fans, music
entertainment
Conclusions/Justification:
Billboard is an American music magazine first published
in 1894. It started specialising in the music industry in
the 1950’s. It’s internationally recognised for record
charts, primarily charts like the Billboard Hot 100,
ranking top songs and albums regardless of genre.
Through the use of codes and conventions in this
magazine, I was able to identify the target audience. For
instance, the blue colour alongside the main image hints
at a target audience for both genders. This is due to the
fact that blue is normally associated with boys even
though women prefer it as well, but the main image is of
Bruno Mars who has a large female fan base. This
concludes a target audience for both genders.
3. Target audience analysis:
Gender : Male
Race : Black
Age : 16-30
Geo-demographics – U.S.A, UK, Canada
Socio-economics : E , Can be purchased by
unemployed people, students and people above
this rank as well.
Psychographic profile : Aspirers, Rap fans, Hip-
Hop fans, music entertainment, entertainment
Conclusions/Justification: The Source is an American
music magazine. It was first issued in 1988 and is the
world’s longest running rap periodical. The main image
is of Meek Mill, an iconic black rapper who appeals to
rap fans, and the specific target audience of black males.
This is because the target audience can identify with the
main image. Also, the colour scheme of red and white
deploys a swagger which attracts a male audience, and
this allowed me to identify the target audience. The
masthead is the biggest text in the magazine which is
striking for the target audience.
