This document analyzes and compares the communication skills of three Pakistani political leaders: Imran Khan, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. It outlines both the positive and negative aspects of each leader's public speaking abilities and style of communication. Some of Imran Khan's positive traits include his effective use of social media and command of the English language, while some negatives are irrational speeches and becoming too emotional. Maryam Nawaz Sharif communicates rationally and connects with local audiences, but sometimes makes premature claims. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari speaks confidently but lacks fluency in national languages and often speaks irrationally without facts.

2. Brief Note on Aspects of Communication Skills of Imran
Khan, Maryam Nawaz Sharif & Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Everyone has his own positive and negative aspects of communication skills. However, the
political leaders of a country must have effective communication skills as they have to appear
before the public and media on regular basis. This brief note explains the positive and negative
aspects of the following political personalities;
I. Imran Khan
II. Maryam Nawaz Sharif
III. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
(Note: The below explained aspects are devised keeping aside my personal political views.)
Positive Aspects of Imran Khan
 First and foremost, positive aspect of Imran Khan’s communication is his influence on
masses through social media. As per stats, around 63 percent population of the country
comprises of youth aged between 15 and 33 (UN Population Fund Report 2017). With
evolution in information technology and availability of 3G & 4G internet services, the
youth of this country is now connected with its leadership through social media
applications. Imran Khan is fully utilizing these applications to communicate his ideology
and policies.
 Second positive aspect of Imran Khan’s communication is his command over English
language. Since, English is considered as International Language for communication
across the globe and Imran Khan is using his command over this language at different
forums for communicating the social and political issues. His speeches in United Nations
and other international and national forums are substantial enough to prove this point.
Negative Aspects of Imran Khan
 First negative aspect of Imran Khan’ communication, as per my opinion, is irrationality
in his speeches. Mostly, Imran Khan speaks at public forums without any preparation and
facts and figures. He misquotes historical events, financial figures, poetry and even
geography. Due to this negative aspect, he has been mocked by opposition parties and

3. general public as well. International media also highlights his blunders during his
speeches which portrays a very negative image of the Prime Minister of a country.
 Second negative aspect of Imran Khan’s communication is that he become emotional
during public speaking. During this emotional phase of his speech, he made such
promises which are not possible to be completed in the present scenario. His such
emotional agendas give him a popularity rise at that moment, but in a long run, those
mistakes become his blunders and even his spokespersons could not defend them
before the public and media.
 Third important negative impact of Imran Khan’s communication is excessive use of
media to address the people on live telecast. He is considered to be the only Prime
Minister who has addressed the nation on Pakistan Television more than any other
Prime Minister or President in this short period of time. Recently, his meeting with
Pakistani diplomats sparked serious concerns among the diplomatic community of
Pakistan when he stated that, the Indian diplomats are performing better than the
Pakistani Diplomats, in a meeting which was telecasted on live on television. Such
mistakes portray a negative image of the country before the international community.
Positive Aspects of Maryam Nawaz Sharif
 First positive aspect of Maryam Nawaz is his rational and to the point talk on the issue.
Since her entry in the national politics in 2013, his speeches to the public, talk to media
and interviews to different news channels, she always uses calculated words and facts, as
per my observation. She remains to the point during his talk and never digresses from the
issue. Due to this positive aspect, she has successfully drawn attention of public at large.
 Maryam Nawaz’s second positive aspect of communication is she always adapt herself to
the local masses. During her visit to different provinces such as Gilgit Baltistan, KPK,
Sindh etc, she starts her speech with the local language, which has a positive impact over
the crowd. National and International media has also acknowledged that Maryam Nawaz
is a crowd puller and an eloquent speaker.
 Third positive aspect of Maryam Nawaz communication is her presence on social media.
Presently, social media is becoming powerful day by day and a single event on social
media cause a huge impact on the public. Maryam Nawaz remains active on different
social media applications, which connects her to her voters across the country. She
updates her voters about different developments through social media, due to which she
remains prominent on social media.

4. Negative Aspects of Maryam Nawaz Sharif
 As per my opinion, the most important negative aspect of Maryam Nawaz
communication is her habit of premature claims before the public. She often claims about
completion of project, victory in election etc prematurely, but the result comes otherwise.
This aspect causes serious embarrassment in the public and damage to her political
career.
 Second important negative aspect of Maryam Nawaz communication is her lack of
knowledge about the history and current situations. Quotation of historical events as well
as facts and figures, has a substantial impact in Public Speaking. Due to this negative
impact, the speeches of Maryam Nawaz are not achieving the momentum which is
essentially required to charge and convince the crowd.
 Another negative aspect of Maryam Nawaz communication is that during her public
speaking, she often makes commitments which she cannot fulfill in the practical world.
Such commitments give her popularity in the public for the time being. But, when it
comes to fulfill those commitments, she remains silent which cause serious
disappointment among her supporters. This aspect is causing serious damage to her
political career and also damaging the politics of her party.
Positive Aspects of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
 The first positive aspect of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s communication is his confidence to
speak before the public or at any other forum. As per my observation, Bilawal Bhutto
always speaks with extreme confidence whatever he speaks. His press conferences and
speeches in the National Assembly of Pakistan are substantial enough to prove this point.
He always communicates his point to his audience and does not feel any pressure.
 Another positive aspect of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s communication is his fluency in
English language. Since, English language has attained the status of International
Language for communication around the world and Bilawal Bhutto is using his mastery
over this language at international forums for communicating the social and political
issues. His speeches at different international and national forums as well as his
interviews to the international media are considerable enough to prove my point.
Negative Aspects of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
 Alongwith his positive aspects, Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has some negative aspects in
his communication as well. Firstly, Mr. Bilawal Bhutto is not fluent in his local as well as

5. national language. Since, he is leading a national political party, he must have fluency in
Urdu and local language. But even after many years, he is not eloquent in his speech and
this negative aspect is a serious damage to his political career.
 The second negative aspect of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s communication is as per my
opinion, is irrationality in his speeches. Most of the times, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari speaks
at public forums without any preparation and facts and figures. Due to this negative
aspect, he has been mocked by opposition parties and general public as well.

essentially important for a future political leader of a national party.
