Overview of project scheduling management
■ Project Schedule is a technique that imparts what work should be
performed, which resource will perform the work and the time spans
in which that work should be performed
■ Without a complete & workable schedule, the project manager will not
be able to communicate with regard to resources deployment that are
important to deliver the project

Overview of project scheduling management
■ Scheduling is the listing of deliverables, activities, and milestones
within a project
■ A schedule usually includes a planned start and finish date, duration,
sequence, and resources assigned to each activity
■ Effective scheduling is a critical component of successful project
schedule management

S.O/P.D
Ensure compliance to the Condition of Contract which
require the Contractor to submit the Work Program for
S.O. or P.D. approval
Basis for monitoring & controlling project progress:
• Progress reporting & analysis of performance
• Evaluation of progress claim/interim payment
• Evaluation of EOT claim
Basis for preparation of cash flow projection and
budgeting

Objectives project scheduling
Scheduling provides the following benefits:
■ Provides a "road map" for project manager & project team members
■ Assists with tracking, reporting, and communicating progress
■ Ensures everyone is on the same page with tasks, dependencies, and
deadlines
■ Highlights issues and concerns
■ Monitors progress and identify issues early
9
Planning and scheduling
■ Planning and scheduling are distinct but inseparable aspects of
project schedule management
■ Planning primarily deals with selecting the appropriate strategies and
procedures in order to achieve project objectives, such as:
– How the work will be decomposed
– How monitoring & controlling will be done
– How resource usage will be optimised
– Interface between operation zone & those involve
– Method of construction to be employed

Planning and scheduling
■ Scheduling converts the project action plans into an operating
timetable using appropriate software and technique to determine:
– Start and completion dates for activities
– Activity sequencing
– Activity implementation duration
– Resources for the execution of activities
– Information to be maintained & monitored for progress reporting
11
Scheduling tools & technique
■ There are a range of tools and techniques to develop, monitor and
control project schedules, which includes:
– Gantt Chart
– Schedule Network Diagram
– Critical Path Method (CPM)
– Schedule compression

Gantt Chart:
• Chart shows activity start date &
finish date
• Milestones are used to
represent important activities or
events
• Relationship/dependency
between activities can be shown
using arrows

Schedule Network Diagram
(Precedence Diagram Method)
• Network diagram that uses
box/node to represent an
activity and linking it using an
arrow that represent
relationship/dependency
Critical Path Method (CPM)
16
■ Scheduling method that used the network
diagram to represent a project and
activity sequencing required to complete
it, known as path
■ Duration for each path is calculated to
identify the critical path, that determine
duration for the whole project
■ Using critical path-specific software is key
to effectively using the CPM
■ The CPM is incredibly common and a
powerful tool used across the
construction industry

Scheduling Tools &
Techniques
Schedule Compression:
• A schedule can be shortened in
two ways:
• crashing: using more resources
than planned on the task
• fast-tracking: activities that
were originally planned to be
performed sequentially are
performed in parallel
