This document compares the representations of social groups in the films Attack the Block and Cooper. In Attack the Block, the character Moses is portrayed as a mischievous youth living in a London council estate, often seen wearing a hoodie and bandana. Similarly, the character Cooper in the film Cooper is an aggressive 18-20 year old teen typically dressed in all black. Both films portray the characters engaging in criminal activities and being chased by police, representing the stereotype of troubled youth involved with gangs and criminal behavior.
1. TASK 2
HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS
2. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT REPRESENT SOCIAL
GROUPS?
This is Moses from Attack the Block. In the
film Attack the Block Moses is portrayed
as one of many mischievous youths based
in south London's council estates. In the
film Moses is seen wearing a hoodie,
baseball cap and bandana at most times
this shows the stereo type of many young
people in London. Moses is violent and is
not afraid to what he must to accomplish
his goals.
This is Cooper from our film COOPER.
Cooper is a youth at around the age of 18-
20 who like many teens gets aggressive
quickly. He is seen with an all black outfit
throughout most of the opening and
covers his face most of the time. This
shows the audience the stereotype of
most teens being associated with some
sort of gang life as cooper is displayed as a
criminal in the film.
3. THE SIMILARITIES
Like Moses, Cooper is a teenager within education looking for violence and trouble. The close-ups of both characters in each
film are very similar and both show that these characters have some sort of criminal activity going on in their lives from the
close-up. Many times we see Moses run away from police and even get caught by police in the film Attack The Block in
which similarly the same is displayed in COOPER where police are hunting for Cooper. Both films show how many teens are
involved with criminal activity and many are constantly being chased for their mischievous acts.
In both films we can see both teens are very troubled. In Attack the Block we see Moses is troubled by the government and
the police with its racial discrimination targeting council homes only. In COOPER we see something similar in which the teen
is also troubled with his own thoughts in his college. This shows how many young people are troubled by these matters
whether it be pressure from school or racism in the community.
In many scenes Moses is seen in the dark making him a shady character. Similarly in COOPER, Cooper is shown in a dark
room at times avoiding and natural light. The colour of his outfit also assumes he is this sort of shady character as well as
Moses who also takes on the colour black for his outfit.
