Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used specifically for treating viral infections rather than bacterial ones. Most antivirals are used for specific viral infections, while a broad-spectrum antiviral is effective against a wide range of viruses.

4. ANTIVIRAL DRUGS
Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used
specifically for treating viral infections rather
than bacterial ones. Most antivirals are used for
specific viral infections, while a broad-
spectrum antiviral is effective against a wide
range of viruses.

5. Classification of antiviral drugs
They are classified on the basis of
1. Inhibition of penetration of host cell
virus.
2. Inhibition of viral replication.

6. Inhibition of penetration of
host cell virus
It acts by interfering with the uncoating and thud
transfer of free viral nucleic acid into host cell.
Amantadine is an antiviral that is used in the
prophylactic or symptomatic treatment of influenza
A. It is also used as an antiparkinsonian agent, to treat
extrapyramidal reactions, and for postherpetic
neuralgia. Example Amantadine, Rimantadine

7. Gamma globulin
It act by neutralization the viruses and prevent their
attachment to host cell. Gamma globulin injections
are usually given in an attempt to temporarily boost a
patient's immunity against disease. Being a product
derived from bone marrow and lymph gland
cells, gamma globulin injections, along with blood
transfusions and intravenous drug use, can pass
along hepatitis C to their recipients.

8. Inhibition of viral replication
These agents inhibit the synthesis of viral nucleic
acid by inhibiting of viral DNA polymerase .
Example :Acyclovir , Brivudine , Trivirin

13. Clinical use of antiviral drugs
Remarkable progress has been made in
antiviral chemotherapy. Six approved
antiviral drugs are now available for the
treatment of various viral infections.
Trifluridine, idoxuridine and vidarabine
are all effective in patients with herpes
keratitis; trifluridine is preferred due to its
low toxicity

14.  Acyclovir is the drug of choice in patients
with infections due to herpes simplex viruses,
including genital herpes, herpes encephalitis,
and neonatal herpes, and infections due to
varicella-zoster virus.
 a variety of viral illnesses, much needs to be
learned about specific dosage guidelines based
on the studies of pharmacokinetics,
pharmacodynamics, potential adverse effects
and viral resistance, and the role of
combination therapy to optimize therapy.
