Nelson extends hitting streak as BSU Baseball drops first two NSIC games
Beavers Open NSIC Play vs Concordia-St. Paul
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Barnes Field) – The Bemidji State Baseball team started off their NSIC play by dropping game
one to the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears by a score of 10-8 and game two 4-3. Senior Tyler Nelson extended
his hitting streak to 16 games.
Concordia-St. Paul: 10 Bemidji State: 8
Freshman catcher Gunner Olszewski started off the scoring in the top of second inning with a three-run
homerun to left center field that drove in Mason Bellew and Mason Cisneros. Tyler Nelson would add
one more run during the inning when he singled to left center, driving in Joey Hanowski.
In the top of the third inning Olszewski drove in his fourth RBI of the game with a fielder’s choice that
scored Cisneros. A few batters later Hanowski reached on an error to the Concordia-St. Paul first
basemen that ended up scoring Olszewski and Logan Riedel. Both runs were unearned but Hanowski
was credited with one RBI.
Hanowski drove in his second run of the game when he hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Olszewski
in the top of the seventh inning.
Terry Hadden (0-3) started on the mound for the Beavers where he was the pitcher of record. Hadden
pitched 2.1 innings where he struck out four batters. Nate Heisick then came in to the game and threw
3.2 innings of relief, struck out one batter and did not allow a run. Heisick now has a 2.65 ERA on the
season.
The Bemidji State defense turned three double plays during the first game and committed one error. The
Beaver offense stranded nine runners in scoring position.
Senior Tyler Nelson recorded four hits, extending his hitting streak to 15 games and batting average up
to .425. Mason Cisneros reached base three times with two hits and one walk while he scored two runs.
Olszewski stole two bases, his third and fourth steals of the season and scored three runs.
Concordia-St. Paul: 3 Bemidji State: 4
Joey Hanowski led off the game with a home run to left field that put the Beavers up early in the first
inning. It was Hanowski’s first homerun of the season.
Gunner Olszewski continued his hot streak when he drove in Logan Riedel with a groundout to the
Golden Bears first basemen in the top of the second inning to put the Beavers up 2-0.
In the fifth inning the Beavers broke a 2-2 tie when Mason Bellew singled to left field that resulted in
Scott Litchy crossing home plate to give the Beavers the lead.
Jack Stigman (1-2) started on the mound for the Beavers and he pitched 5.0 innings, struck out six
batters and only allowed three hits. Patrick Gonzales came into the game during the sixth inning then
went on to pitch 2.0 innings and became the pitcher of record. Logan Riedel came in for the final inning
and struck out two batters.
With one hit in the second game, Tyler Nelson extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games.
The Beavers will finish the series against the Golden Bears tomorrow with the first game starting at
noon and the second game scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. They will then travel to Mankato, Minn.
where they will start a four game series against Minnesota State, Mankato on April 2-3.
